Spring ain’t sprung so far due to the Gore effect – a combined consequence of the ETS legislation being considered under urgency and our Prime Minister’s posturing at the UN in the pre “Copenhagen Climate change talks” talk fest.

Our weather is usually a mix of alternating tropical and Antarctic influences. Spring was slightly ahead of schedule and until the last couple of weeks unusual for the lack of southerly changes, this is just back to normal(ish).

About the only predictable thing about weather is that TV will keep trying to make news out of what is normal – it changes.

Had a look at the video clips of the fresh Green co-leader on Q&A. Is it just me, or is this silly girl really that stupid?
She didn’t have one serious response to any and all of the questions asked, and just kept on regurgitating lines that had obviously been prepared in advance. Couldn’t shut up either, and came across like your typical left-feminist bully.
If that’s the intellectual summit of green policy making, they’re fandangled…

$240B of resources that could be available to us.

Someone has guestimated a possible value of the resources, but what would it cost to recover them? Has there been any guestimate of what proportion would be economic to recover? What is the nett value of the resources that are economic to recover? $240B is a meaningless number.

There is widespread concern about the decline in honey bee populations around the world. So far we are not too bad and our scientists are doing a good job on breeding a bee strain that is resistant to the varoah mite which leaves hives vulnerable to other viruses.
It seems one enemy of bees is monoculture because they need food and especially pollen all year round.
Well, I am pleased to say the gardens we have created in rural areas flower in some way all year round and we do attract lots of bees.
So maybe the GReens should learn to love the life stylers and farmers too should recognize that we provide a valuable service to their friends the honey bee.

Once again, it seems people leap to conclusions about land use and ecology and have no appreciation of the complexity of the interactions between plants animals and people.

Doesn’t make nice reading Owen, the poor buggers are in deep poo. The similarities between the Californian state government and the clowns that have been running this joint are striking. I liked the bit about California meeting it’s Kyoto commitments, just shows that the stupid are not only confined to our fair shores. Most of what’s talked about in the article will fall on the deaf ears of our so called leaders, it doesn’t paint the “progressive” way in the best of lights. Sadly I doubt very much will change for California or New Zealand, things aren’t bad enough yet.

Did anyone see the story in today’s (paper version) Herald that the Volkswagen was not invented by Hitler but was in fact invented by a Jew and stolen by Hitler? The man’s name is Josef Ganz and his design came out in February 1933, month’s before Hitler’s. He had to flee Germany after his plans were stolen, and ended up dying in obscurity in Australia in 1967 but he kept all his documents on microfilm. There is a new book coming out by a Dutch author about his life. I found this Wiki about him, and you can see how alike his design is to the subsequent design of the VW.

As the kids on the Mitre 10 ad say on TV – ‘No surprises there then’.

Rakaia George, talking of Mulberry Harbours. You may have seen a little memo from Winston Churchill to Lord Mountbatten regarding the d-day landing plans. It was pretty brief:

“PIERS FOR USE ON BEACHES

They must float up and down with the tide. The anchor problem must be mastered. Let me have the best solution worked out. Don’t argue the matter. The difficulties will argue for themselves.”

I’ve seen the memo at the D-Day Museum in Portsmouth. Compare and contrast with a similar project now. There would be a thousand pages written before the first engineer was engaged.

It was a mistake, bruv. A rort is when you deliberately set out to get milk the system for all its worth. When it happens by being a bit sloppy with filling in forms it is a mistake. It ran from February to May, and when it was discovered in June – by the Greens themselves, not by Parliamentary Service, I might add – it was stopped.

The only aspect of it that I think reflects poorly on the Greens is that it wasn’t until September that the money overpaid between February and May was repaid. I agree that is rather tardy.

Remember that it was the Greens who initiated the revealing of MPs expenses by putting their into the public arena voluntarily. Do you really think they would have done that if there had been anything dodgy going on?

I was surprised to see the match fixing allegation, doesn’t stack up to me. My guess is that Pakistan took us a bit lightly, there was one unlucky LBW against them, a bad drop which may or may not have affected the result, and we played consistently well enough through the game. Actually I though we may have blown it when they poked and prodded for so long in the middle of our innings and fell behind the run rate, but they used the power play perfectly (especially compared to how Pakistan blew theirs). Not holding high hopes for tonight, but you never know, the Aussies seem super confident too and barely got past Pakistan, it’s only one game…

I’d like to see a list of the Greens Super fund owned properties going back to the trust’s formation, and details of the rent charged by the trust and paid for by the taxpayer in respect of those properties.

A quick valuation exercise will let us know how long this rort has been operating and, importantly, how much it has cost the taxpayer in the background, while the pious Greens introduced us to their moral compass in the foreground.

Right now their moral compass is 180deg away from ‘transparancy’

If you are still around Toad and seeing as how you seem to have the inside goss, can you please give us the details?

I could calculate Feb-May as being “about” 16 weeks and the weekly rort at “about” $500 which comes to “about” $8,000. Metira “we made a mistake” Turei said it was “about” $6,000 that was paid back.

Can we get something closer than “about”, whether it included GST, how it was calculated, when it was discovered, when it was paid back, who authorised the payment to PS, who signed the cheque, who are the Trustees of the Green Party Superannuation Scheme, how often do they meet, who has delegated authorities. That would be a good start at transparency IMHO.

Then can we have a look at the areas where there is a financial synergy between the Green Party Superannuation Scheme’s investment portfolio and the companies who have benefited from the most active Green Party lobbying.

I’m thinking that Project Aqua and Windfarm Technologies would be a good place to start although I would take advice as to earlier examples (I’m sure you would be able to tell us) and would like to be assured , always in the interest of transparency, that the Green Party Superannuation Scheme Investments were declared as interests when the party was lobbying against competing investments.

You see we are being converted and are now extremely interested in transparency but at is all a bit blurred as yet and really looks like there is heaps being fudged and hidden. What other rorts are you hiding??

As you well know Toad, it is all about perception and transparency so coming clean regardless of the fallout just has to be the right thing to do.

Rod Donald would insist on it I’m sure because he was an honourable man and it was only co-incidence that the Super Scheme’s design was such that it attracted the maximum taxpayer funding for the personal benefit of Green ex-MPs

For a start, even the most “liberal” commentators eg Olberman, Maddow, are on the right of our political spectrum.

Second, the true reasons for California’s disaster in rooted in Proposition 13, driven by US style conservatives, passed by referendum in 1978.

Proposition 13 did two things: it placed constraints on increases in property taxes, which had been rising fast with rapidly escalating house prices and it enacted a requirement for 2/3 majority for future state and local tax increases. And every budget needs a 2/3 majority to get passed.

It has been in ” borrow and hope” mode for donkeys years. So it’s a mess. And it’s all but f****d.

What they need is for Roger and Rod to get over there and finish the job. They won’t need their umbrellas because over there it hardly ever trickles down – quite the reverse.

By the way, the latest economic stats from the US show the worst hit groups in the crisis were the poorest and the richest, and the poorest hit harder than the richest, proportionally. Millions more are now below the poverty line. And it’s a pretty tough country when you are down on your luck!

So do I. Actually, I’d go further, as I’ve commented earlier today over at Not PC.

Rugby World Cup is a profitable business, and there is no place for state subsidies/involvement in a profitable business. There is ample competition for broadcast rights, so no reason for the state to subsidise if their channels cannot compete on a commercial basis.

Anyone surprised to hear that from a Green? You see, we’re not really all like that, despite the prejudices from those who paint us as such.

Competitive enterprise should be competitively owned (with maybe the state having an ownership in a sector, but with not commercial advantage).

Monopolies should be state owned. Otherwise the consumer gets ripped off by profiteering, asset stripping, and reduction of serive.

Hurf, your ideology really does triumph over reasoning, doesn’t it.

There is no “control” when a 2/3 majority is needed to raise revenue, so politicians try to cut costs but keep enough services going to get reelected. It doesn’t matter which party is in power.

As regards the global financial crisis that began with the meltdown on Wall Street, any objective analysis would demonstrate that the crisis was not caused by one party or the other, it was a general mindset.I have watched with amusement politicians on both sides of the house over there blame the other, but it’s nonsense. The mindset was best illustrated by Alan Greenspan who continually and publicly placed his faith in the ” invisible hand” of the market – he later testified that he was wrong. It was a systemic event.

By the way, did you know the guy who wrote California Dreaming, forgotten his name, Mamas and Papas group, raped his daughter on her wedding night and began a 20 year incestuous affair with her. Kind of ironic, isn’t it?

What I find hilarious about situations like this is that these Union airheads bang on about corporate greed when they use their terror tactics to force payrises onto employers. They want to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour, and link it to the average wage FFS!

Then, on the other hand, when businesses fail, go under, or lay off staff, they blame a corporate greed culture, and the free market!!!

What a fucking joke unions are.

As for their overt political campaigning…

National’s Climate Change Response (Moderated Emissions Trading) Amendment Bill is now in front of the Finance and Expenditure Select Committee. Submissions close on the 13th of October, giving a scandalously short time frame for the preparation of submissions on legislation of this scale.[2]

Emissions’ trading is the biggest government policy to be imposed on New Zealand in recent times and promises to be just as invasive and cancerous as income tax (which has been around since 1891). The Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) that National intends to inflict on the country is more ambitious than any other emissions trading scheme in the world, in that it covers all sectors of the economy and all greenhouse gases. No-one will escape the cost of the ETS as it not only forces up the price of fuel and electricity, but of all other goods and services as well. And while National claims to have reduced the estimated cost to households, the fine print reveals that costs are only contained as a result of subsidies. Once the transition period ends in 2013, consumers will face a massive price shock.

The thing is, and I haven’t yet read KIA’s latest posts, nothing is going to change his mind.

However, you always have the people who read without necessarily engaging, and this is generally my target audience and fellows like KIA just give me the ammunition.

He is obviously a McCain supporter by ideology rather than policies because very little of what McCain says makes sense. And that means arguing with KIA is a futile exercise. I’m a pragmatist by nature. I’m interested in What Works Best. If I started a political party I would call it exactly that: WWB.

And plank No 1 would be that religion can only be practiced by consenting ADULTS, like swinging, I guess. 🙂

So you only debate with people who vote like you? I would have thought it more intellectually honest to debate issues on the mertis of the point raised, rather than the political inclination of the counter-argurment commenter.

KIA looked to have assembled some very cohesive points. Still I accept that getting into the debate at that level of detail takes time that one doesn’t always have.
