I think more people leave in Jan as they do the last Xmas with family and friends - its a natural point for change.

Wouldn't be surprised to the leavers rate to continue trend.

Most returning Kiwi's will be doing so as their job prospects have dried up overseas and many would return as they have spent 6 or more years overseas and are home sick.

Immigration in it's self is a false boom. Yes house prices may go up as those that come home or migrate, running from england, need homes but this will just create a false dawn.

We need to export and jobs will only come from this. If people come here they buy a house then, unless they are here to retire, they need a job. You could go one importing people at an ever increasing rate so that they become the economic drivers but at any point we become undesirable our economy would crash again.

New Zealand attraction is our low population and relatively low pollution rate due to our low population when these are gone we had better have a well developed tech based economy as our main sales pitch will be gone.

I haven't noticed any change in government was there one?

The Marina at Whangamata has finally opened despite the scurrilous efforts of Chris Carter and Bob Harvey . This is symptomatatic of the modern New Zealand to which Kiwis are flocking home.

The refugees from socialism are returning in their thousands to a land that will be lead by National/Maori/Act for the next 20 years at least.
They are glad that we are turning around from the economic disaster left by Michael Cullen's economic scorched earth sabotage which came close to treason.
They are glad that H1 and H2 are gone forever.
They see a land of opportunity and freedom of speech. Freedom from the Stalinist thought police of the last 9 years. A land where education and growth are promoted.
We are a growing nation of 4.3 million people and we need these talented people and entrepreneurs. The surgical miners to near invisibly exploit billions of dollars of minerals. The developers to give jobs to those thousands who have emerged from the educational morass with barely any skills. The people with ideas and capital to ignite our phenomenal potential.
Welcome home and bring your friends with you.

And why is this happening?

One reason is that over the past year people have become far more positive about New Zealand's future.

And no-one deserves more credit for that than John Key.

There's something odd about this. Would be useful to have the raw numbers and a few more years to play with - statistics is your friend and all that.
The rate for 07 and 08 is actually pretty steady Jan-Aug then moves to a lower rate the rest of the year. The fall from March 09 may be consistent, one more descending data point and it becomes a trend.
But why the January surge? Is there an inconsistency in data collection month to month I wonder?

[DPF: Stats NZ have the raw data. I guess many people leave NZ at year's end after Xmas]

Lets hold our breath and wait for all the Property pundits to suddenly cry out that the housing market is about to boom!
Still, would be nice to know if we have a net migration of Aussies over here yet.

Mike, we are still here so the answer is yes.
How on earth can a 31 yo be jailed 31 times for gods sake?

I think we will end up keeping the bad ones and losing the good ones. I still can not wrap my head around why the Govt. removed bonding from the SU and BM scholarships. They are paying for these kids degrees and then letting them run overseas to use their skills. Brain Drain!
