Tino obviously impressed you which is interesting (in a good way). Shows how tough the cycling world was back then when winning races meant a trophy cabinet full of crystal glasses and plates .. no cash.
I would love to meet the guy, maybe I will.

It sounds like a really nasty break. Not a good way to win – presuming I get round myself. Nikki let me know on Sunday and I hope she makes a full recovery and makes sure she isn’t left with something that catches up with her when she is a bit older. I was looking forward to the challenge although it would have been pretty hard given her age and recent multisport success. Certainly my hope (dream) of being able to stay with her round Taupo has helped me get out of bed @ 5.30 at least three days a week over recent months. If she does recover well maybe we can talk about another challenge next year.

And burt thanks for the nicest thing you have ever said about me – but I was at the Tabak book launch tonight and met people who really know how to ride bikes – and just talking to them reminds me I am a very average if keen recreational rider.

I recently broke my Fibula right down at the ankle, yes it is painful. I walked around on it for about half an hour telling myself that the loud snapping noise I heard wasn’t a bone breaking (just a sprain- yeah right) but eventually gave into the pain and went for an x-ray. 6 weeks in a cast and that has now been off for three weeks now.

Sadly I don’t have a great story like Nikki to tell about how I broke it – I was pissing about with the kids and went to splash them in a puddle and got it very very wrong. However, I’m back on my bike riding to work and looking forward to kicking Mallard’s ass around Karapoti again next year.

Johnboy – Mallard is very capable on a bike. I hate his politics and his bully boy antics and his disregard for the law when he can’t be bothered complying with it (and his hypocrisy over school zones etc ) but – he can ride a bike.

I just watched the 60 minutes report. I guess I will have to watch it again. I did not see one cyclist indicate their wish to change lanes or turn. Most did not even look behind first. There is the problem, but I could be wrong
