  1. billyborker (1047) Says:

Good news? Well, potentially good news, professional grandstander and revictimiser, Grant McVicar may well have to find an honest job as the Charities Commission looks set to decline the (In)sensible Sentencing Trust’s charitable status.

This trust was never a charity, it was always a front for McVicar to press his own agenda, all the while sucking from the taxpayers’ teat.

Anyones faith in Science shaken over the last week?

Will MSM ever recover from sitting back and saying nothing for so long while online serious questions were raised?

IF what these documents point to is true – ie – These people have been using sloppy sloppy science to convince the world there is a problem when really there’s not – will this be the scandal of the millennium? – no hyperbole intended.

How big a cock is Nick Smith, JK et al going to feel like in the next few month IF this stuff is true?

  3. billyborker (1047) Says:

Anyones faith in Science shaken over the last week?

No, because scientific knowledge doesn’t require faith.

How big a cock is Nick Smith, JK et al going to feel like in the next few month IF this stuff is true?

I thought Nick Smith was on drugs for depression, not impotence.

  4. Christopher Simpson (26) Says:

For all you parents or those interested – take the kids to the Porirua Police Museum. I took my kids there and they loved it. They were able to dress up in the latest police uniforms – the stab proof vests are heavy! And they were then given a missing person’s mystery to solve as we went around. The mystery wasn’t that easy and the adults will have as much fun doing it as the kids did. The exhibits range from issues of today – right through to when the police started. A few grisily ones are in there as well. So well worth the visit. It’s opposite Aotea Lagoon near Whitby and in the police training college. Not open Sunday’s. http://www.police.govt.nz/service/museum/index.html

Taxpayers to pick up finance sector tab

    4:00 AM Saturday Nov 28, 2009

New Zealand’s own sub-prime crisis, the finance company collapse that began with a trickle of failures in 2006 and became a landslide by 2008, entered a period of remission last year with the introduction of the Retail Deposit Guarantee Scheme.

Treasury set aside an $816 million provision in the June quarter Crown accounts to cover claims under the guarantee it deemed were “more likely than not” to occur.

Three months later the sum had risen by a further $47 million to $863 million.

Viking2 – At least we’re not paying for these collapses… all our creditors are. And if the next government is as willing to borrow up large, and spend up large and not bring in some much needed changes as that knob john key and all his lackeys, then we never will have to pay for it as we will go bankrupt.

I’ve sat in on seminars and presentations with economists and the overwhelming feel is that without massive changes to the tax structure (as treasury has said is needed), we are going to experience a massive assset devaluation(ie, property and farming collapse) at best, or wholesale national bankruptsy at worst

  10. jcuknz (376) Says:

Did you have to shout Scanner? Cuba doesn’t have a border but a coastline. Otherwise typical biased fun to be laughed at.

  11. Chicken Little (618) Says:

Borker – You have faith that the people doing the science are doing so in a proper manner. In other words you trust that they have followed the scientific method. This doesn’t seem to be the case here.

We were considering the future of the planet (their words) on what these people were saying.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the PGA star hit a fire hydrant and a tree as he pulled out of his driveway early Friday in his 2009 Cadillac sport utility vehicle.

Woods was taken to Health Central Hospital. His condition was not immediately known, though the news release said his injuries were serious.”

Jesus Christ! How fast can you go out of a DRIVEWAY? Has he got a 2km drive and did he take a run at it to get up enough speed to seriously injure himeslf?

  14. CharlieBrown (323) Says:

LC – http://www.nzherald.co.nz/economic-policy/news/article.cfm?c_id=185&objectid=10606129 highlights the latest report. Previous recomendations have been to flatten the tax rate, decrease the burden on income taxes, increase gst to offset these if neccessary. I don’t agree with all that the treasury says(eg i think we should have a huge huge cut in government spending) but the overall message is good.

Borker – You have faith that the people doing the science are doing so in a proper manner. In other words you trust that they have followed the scientific method. This doesn’t seem to be the case here.

    Faith? No. Trust? Maybe.

The ting with science is that it is, eventually, self correcting. Unlike faith or belief, scientific hypothesis are subject to review, test and replication.

What we are seeing here is not a failure of science, or the scientific method, but an expose of unfounded belief systems.

  16. kaya (645) Says:

I was taliking with Kristy last night, and you came up in conversation. We wondered what happened to the Pete we both knew and loved and how he became so bitter and twisted. We wondered if he’d ever again be able to make a contribution, or if he’d just sit on the sidelines and snipe.

Looks like you’ve given up trying to make a contribution and are determined to just be a worn out old sniper.

Kristy and I feel for you.

    Please explain.

  20. Pete George (4297) Says:

Anyones faith in Science shaken over the last week?

It shouldn’t have been. Those who understand the scientific process and weight of evidence human fallibility won’t have. And those who had no faith in science to back up their wishful thinking won’t have.

Those who have jumped to a conclusion that defies the majority of a substantial body of scientific research and observation will despair wondering why most people don’t buy into their agenda with an ulterior motive or their blind faith in an illogical and unscientific viewpoint.

But life will go on. Humans will keep stuffing the environment with crap. Life will keep evolving. People will keep smoking and choking their lungs. Obama will remain president. The earth will revolving around the sun. JFK will remain dead. The twin towers will remain rubble.

And a small noisy minority will keep trying to convince others of their madness, and they won’t care whose reputations and careers they try to stuff up in the process.

You have such a winning way with words, do you work in customer service?

Your attempts at humour are pathetic. Your dig at someone’s depression is right up there with your views on “sub optimal” people like my daughter. Remember your beautiful piece on Down syndrome? Fuck off.

It wasn’t a dig at depression, it was a response to the cock size comment, but I gueess like most loonie tunes here, you had a humour bypass a long time ago.

I do not know you, your daughter or recall any such conversation, but since you asked, Mongoloids ARE sub optimal, and where identified in the womb, should be aborted, no ifs, no buts, no maybes. Abortion on diagnosis. End of story.

Obviously my daughter should have been drowned at birth. Hitler would have agreed with you Borker, you’re in good company.

We should meet up one day and have a chat about it.

  29. Auberon (433) Says:

The Dominion Post has hit a new low for me. When the front page is devoted to a plain clothes police car partially covering a disabled parking spot, with its driver at the wheel the whole time, this newspaper has come to a pretty sad place.

Like there’s nothing important happening in the country?

Do they think Bill English, who would no doubt prefer not to have a security detail, says to his cops “look lads, I’m the deputy Prime Minister and I want people to know it, so while I pop in for a haircut, make a public nuisance of yourself so it draws a bit of attention to me”?

What a bunch of venal, petty idiots the Dominion Post has become.

  30. Manolo (1270) Says:

The gravy trains continues: the incompetent Nick Smith will travel to Copenhagen, accompanied by other 20 fellow travellers (including two “distinguihed” Maori, selected after Smith’s bribing of Iwi).

All this farce under the lazy eye and detached hand of the “man-of-steel” John Key, currently in Trinidad, who has been missing in action for weeks on the vital ETS issue.

Incompetence reigns supreme in New Zealand politics.

  34. dad4justice (6088) Says:

  35. muppet (39) Says:

Billy Borker – Outrageously offensive, cruel.

  36. CharlieBrown (323) Says:

Pete George – Your conclusions are pretty obnoxious. My faith in science is as strong as its ever been. Thats why alot of people are pissed of with the “consensus” you talk about. The consensus around man made global warming is a political consensus… NOT A SCIENTIFIC consensus. Its bloody ironic how the same people who question the science around GM are so keen to follow a couple of questionable studies around man made global warming (Notice that i say man made global warming, not global warming).

  37. kaya (645) Says:

billyborker – educational purposes. Everything isn’t like you seem to think it is. You are a sad person and you will reap what you sow.

  38. Pete George (4297) Says:

How embarrased must the media be feeling now!

Worldwide headlines “Tiger Woods seriously injured…” Suppose it is a bit more exciting than “Tiger Woods released from hospital with a cut on his head”

It’s pretty much par for the course.

Similar to “The end of climate science!” blogging is a bit more attention seeking than “a few scientists over-react to denier pressure”.

Not that the deniers will be embarrassed, just perpetually puzzled why most people don’t buy into their game.

  39. Rachael Rich (98) Says:

Kaya – she is beautiful. Thanks for sharing that with us.

I cannot believe there are people around like BillyBorker (except Andrew Sullivan of course!). Here is an extract from Borkers’ “About” on his blog:
“”I’ve always been a fan of Hardy’s writing, his care for the underpriveleged and his acceptance of the fallibility of Man, yet all the while seeing Men in their ordinary lives.”"

Practice what you preach asshole. I don’t usually use this word but BORKER – YOU ARE A CUNT!

DPF – that comment surely warrants a permanent ban.

  40. billyborker (1047) Says:

You kick one little ant’s nest …

  41. side show bob (2213) Says:

Auberon the press is seriously losing the plot, I wrote a letter to the editor pointing out their hypocrisy in the fact they had run three articles on climate change the day the emails from the bullshitters became public, they did not even acknowledge the story. My letter was also nowhere to be seen and there still has been nothing said about the bullshitters. Is it any wonder the print media are losing readers by the thousands, the bastards are their own worst enemies. They haven’t woken up to the fact they no longer can print what they like and the masses have to take it, fuckheads. Our local rag also ran the story on English and his parking problems, front page and all. These people are seriously screwed up individuals, all the crap happening in the world and these lefty two bobs think people give a flying fuck about English, treat the masses like mushrooms and feed them shit is their motto.

Went down to the club last night for a few ales, shit you wouldn’t want to be a National socialist MP, they are about as popular as a dose of pox. I think if idiot boy had walked through the door he would have been strung up, such is the anger. It’s even worst then the hatred saved for Liarbore, most around here feel deeply betrayed.

  42. reid (3839) Says:

Aussies aren’t as dumb as we are, with the Opposition Senate refusing to pass their ETS even though the govt has agreed

to key Opposition demands – including an extra A$7 billion ($8.9 billion) in aid for heavy emitters and the exclusion of agriculture – in return for passage of the legislation.

But open rebellion within the Liberals, and outright rejection of the ETS by senators of the junior Coalition partner, the Nationals, now seriously threaten the deal….

Government ministers were furious, with Assistant Climate Change Minister Greg Combet saying refusal to pass the ETS yesterday could prove only one conclusion. “That is that the extremists, the conspiracy theorists and the climate change sceptics in the Liberal Party have gained ground and are winning this argument.”

Good on ya, Aussies. Meanwhile, the NZ sheeple clap and cheer as our ETS condemns us to economic slavery. Maaaaaaa.

  43. Chthoniid (1109) Says:

    @kaya

Borker you really are a sad fucker and haven’t got a clue what you are talking about.

Here are a couple of photos of my Down Syndrome daughter.

Thanks for sharing. I have a couple of ‘hidden’ albums on my website of photos of disabled kids (I do volunteer photography for Riding for the Disabled on occasion). It’s attitudes like billyborkers that mean they are for the ‘parents eyes only’.

  44. Pete George (4297) Says:

The consensus around man made global warming is a political consensus… NOT A SCIENTIFIC consensus.

I agree, consensus isn’t a good word to use for ongoing science. There is a large majority scientist agreement that there is a high likelihood that we are causing climate problems that could adversely affect a lot of people and bank accounts.

a couple of questionable studies around man made global warming

There are many studies done by many groups of scientists in many countries – yes, they are all questionable as they should be. There are as many concerns that the problem is understated as there are overstated. The nature of consensus (political if you like) is that the end result is likely to be moderate rather than extreme.

  45. Inventory2 (4106) Says:

    Agree on all counts Rachel

Can someone re-post that link to RIP so that I can rid myself of the bitter, twisted billyborker.

  46. Pete George (4297) Says:

I2, just go back to GD on about the 24th, all the info is there.

  47. malcolm (1105) Says:

Kaya, thanks for posting a picture of your lovely daughter. She looks a lot like our 4 1/2 year old daughter, but I don’t have a picture to hand. No doubt she’s an absolute delight and like us you wonder what you did before they came along.

  48. transmogrifier (282) Says:

At least now I can happily skip a certain member’s posts safe in the knowledge that they are the product of a diseased, sociopathic mind and thus won’t contain anything of value.

Quite frankly, opinions like that make it hypocritical of you to complain about any other type of discrimination. Quite baffling, actually.

  49. Matt Long (65) Says:

Borker if you don’t understand that your agreement with science is based on faith you are no smarter than the religionists who also say “I believe it so it must be true.”
I have to agree that the science on AGW does look to be the best money can buy.

  50. Chicken Little (618) Says:

Kaya – what a beautiful little girl.

Borker is nothing, don’t let him get to you.

  51. reid (3839) Says:

Another interesting piece of news: Sarkozy and the UN are gate-crashing CHOGM.

Pressure is mounting on Commonwealth leaders to make an international deal on climate change after French President Nicolas Sarkozy was added to the list of international heavyweights gatecrashing their summit.

Mr Sarkozy’s presence at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting gives it an unprecedented level of international interest and indicates concern that a hard and fast deal on cutting greenhouse gases will not be reached at a crunch United Nations summit in Copenhagen next month.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, head of the United Nations climate talks Ivo de Boer and Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen are also attending the Chogm in Trinidad and Tobago.

It is not clear who invited Mr Sarkozy, but his decision to attend has upped the pressure on Commonwealth leaders to go to Copenhagen and for a deal on emissions cuts and penalties to be reached there.

Mr Key said the presence of Mr Sarkozy with the climate change “heavyweights” at Chogm was an attempt to build consensus on the need for a deal on emissions levels soon.

“Some of the heavy-hitters are in town to put the case when it comes to climate change. They’re using this as a staging post, if you like, going into Copenhagen.”

For those who aren’t aware, Sarkozy is a key NWO figure. This is yet more evidence that climate change is a key vehicle for one-world govt and the real agenda is not saving the planet but implementing politicial control at a global level. If you think that’s a good thing, think again because it destroys national sovereignty. Surprising really that lefties who claim to care so much about people’s democratic and human rights have been so completely taken in by this charade but there we are.

  52. kaya (645) Says:

Chthoniid – I created that album for Borker’s benefit, to hopefully let him see that things aren’t always as clear cut as he imagines. Taken from a couple of different albums.

To be fair, 20 years ago I may have aborted my daughter if I had known of the Downs. Having had the pleasure of watching my girl grow and sharing some of the most amazing times in my life with her I am occasionally horrified to remember that I saw things in such a black and white fashion. Her birth was a massive attitude shift for me.

We learn as we get older that life and everything about it is far from perfect. The things that bring pleasure come from different places and often what we feel is right turns out to be wrong and vice versa. I just enjoy it.

Well done for doing your photography with the kids, your photos on here are outstanding. You would get to see some amazing happiness amongst those disabled kids, probably something Borker will never get to witness.

  53. lloydois (239) Says:

Actually Reid, The Liberal Party are much dumber than you think and are busy committing electoral suicide as we speak.

Their cheer squad in the commentariat – Bolt, Akerman, Devine and Blair are doing them no favours at all.

It is inconceivable that an Australian governing party would adopt a policy that would totally isolate Australia from the global political agenda, let alone be unpopular at home, especially with business.

That the Coalition are even considering it, and that key powerbrokers like Minchin are advocating such a move, is a sign of how detached the Coalition are becoming from the realities of power.

  54. transmogrifier (282) Says:

Science is in no way, shape or form based on faith, and I wish people would stop with this strawman argument.

Science is all about observation, creating a hypothesis for these observations based on current knowledge, AND THEN rigorously testing this hypothesis based on controlled experiments. The results of these experiments (and those that follow from other scientists) dictates whether the hypothesis can be accepted, modified or discarded. Faith doesn’t come into it at all.

  55. big bruv (5660) Says:

    Borker

Why does Garth McVicar scare you so much?

  56. Inventory2 (4106) Says:

Kaya – your daughter is an absolute treasure, and even though she is differently wired to some, she must be your pride and joy. Thank you so much for sharing her with us :-)

As a Christian, I believe that everyone and everything has a purpose. You have been given a unique gift. Friends lost their daughter a few years back at age 3 to a rare neurological condition. In her brief life, they reckon she taught them so much about unconditional love, and that gave them immense comfort after her passing. I pray that you and your family will enjoy a long and joy-filled life together, and that your daughter will bless and enrich the lives of everyone who encounters her.

  57. kaya (645) Says:

Malcolm – “you wonder what you did before they came along”. Never a truer word said, Borker seems to think it is some sort of cliche people trot out to make themselves feel better, nothing further from the truth eh!

Chicken Little – Borker doesn’t get to me, the attitude pisses me off, mainly because it is so ill informed, but nothing that will cause sleep loss. ;)

  58. reid (3839) Says:

    “…the global political agenda…”

Interesting turn of phrase, lloyd. And that’s really what it’s about, isn’t it.

“Science is in no way, shape or form based on faith, and I wish people would stop with this strawman argument. … Faith doesn’t come into it at all.”

Oh but it does, transmog. The very act of placing belief in the validity of the scientific method is an act of faith. What if something came along that was an observable phenomena that could not be explained by the scientific method? Would you discard the scientific method or would you continue to “have faith” that we just don’t have sufficient technology to replicate it under laboratory conditions?

  59. side show bob (2213) Says:

Kaya, a quote from Groucho Marx, “Now there sits a man with an open mind. You can feel the draught from here”, he was probably thinking about Dorker.

  60. malcolm (1105) Says:

Billyborker, occasionally you say something interesting. When you and D4J were abusing each other last week I was unsure what to make of it. Now I’ve seen how nasty you can be, can you clear up the story about Kirsty? You said:

poor old d4j was once besotted by a young woman by the name of Kirsty, last name I will not reveal, but it wasn’t Bentley. Anyhoo, I can’t blame him for being besotted, she was a charmer, attractive, intelligent, athletic and going places. Sadly for d4j, she chose to go those places with me, and the pooor old sould has never quite gotten over the heartbreak of losing her to me.

So the question is, are you a nasty hateful person or are you a nasty hateful person who also tells elaborate lies to inflict further abuse?

  61. reid (3839) Says:

“Borker doesn’t get to me, the attitude pisses me off, mainly because it is so ill informed”

No, he’s not ill-informed. For some reason Billy has a need to say nasty, personal things to specific people much like some small boys like to pull wings off a fly and laugh as they watch the poor creature struggle with their deformity.

Cruel, immature, sadistic are words that describe some of his comments. Quite a shame we have to host him in our midst and I’ve never said or thought that about anyone else on here.

  62. kaya (645) Says:

side show bob – It’s hard to see how the newspapers don’t get it! They have their heads so far up their own arses they can’t see that people who actually take an interest in real news stories no longer use the newspaper as their primary source. Isn’t choice wonderful.
I occasionally buy one to read with a cup of coffee but usually finish up with RSI from flicking pages to get through the ads.
I haven’t done a scientific study but the Herald must be at least 65% – 70% advertising? I know when I buy it the actual content worth reading takes about 20 minutes.

  63. dime (1926) Says:

wow borker is just a sack of shit.

    what a bitter little leftist.

  64. scanner (194) Says:

Great to see Nicky taking a couple of “House Niggers” with him when heads off to sell our country down the shitter.
You da Man Nick, that’s mighty white of you to find space for them, and of course pick up the tab, hope they got Lion Red on tap bro.

  65. reid (3839) Says:

“It’s hard to see how the newspapers don’t get it!”

You could say the same thing about TV couldn’t you.

Unfortunately it does seem a fact that the majority of the population aren’t interested in what they would call high-brow but what most of us here would simply call “news” and “interesting and insightful documentaries.”

I remember Alan Gibbs’ failed attempt to get BBC Radio off the ground here which failed for precisely that reason.

Of course it doesn’t help that TV Execs who come across a quality program schedule it at 11:30PM on a week night and then turn around and say: “we tried it, but it didn’t work, so let’s just stick with Hollywood Celebs Gone Wild.”

It also doesn’t help that the majority of people appear to be so fucking brain-dead that they put up with this behaviour year after year after year.

Those of us who understand how science works would look for reasons why “an observable phenomena that could not be explained by the scientific method” existed. There would be attempts to replicate this phenomena and to see how it could be tested. It could, of course, lead to changes in the scientific method, or it could simply be an elaborate hoax.

So what, Billy. That doesn’t change the fact that the very act of placing belief in the validity of the scientific method is an act of faith. Face it, your argument that its merely rationality and that therefore faith doesn’t come into it, is fucked.

She decided to have it, and she mentioned that the child had brought such joy to their family; DS children, she said, are known to be very affectionate. After that she actually adopted another two DS children I think.

The biggest shame regarding man made global warming is the fact it has become a political issue, as once politicians get involved, the truth becomes murkier and murkier, the proof lies in those leaked emails. Researchers are being paid by both sides of the debate to come up with predetermined conclusions.

The outcome of what happens in Copenhagen is likely to stiffle the poorer countries, keep protectionism strong, probably cause the rich countries to become richer and probably cause more damage to the environment than what would happen if the measures never came into place. The various ETS’s around the world are a classic example of this… For example, europe is protecting its farmers for a long time, NZ isn’t, so european farmers will continue to produce more and more products inefficiently that cause a higher per unit output of greenhouse gases, the net result being that in the case of agriculture, the ETS is causing more greenhouse gases to be released into the environment than what would have happened if we had done absolutely nothing.

None of these cranks should be accorded any respect in future. By their words shall we know them, and their words show them to be ignorant, bullying fools. De Freitas should withdraw and apologise, or resign from his post at Auckland University, and if Treadgold, Dunleavy, McShane, Leyland,or any other member of the NZ CSC want to partake in public debate on the subject of climate science, they should expect derision to be heaped on them and their views.

Now, Chicken is keen on tying me up doing research for him that he is going to reject out of hand, anyway, so Chicken, I politely decline your invitation to be so occupied but do suggest you question Real Climate directly on their science, by all means. If you don’t keep it reasonably polite, it won’t make it through the moderation process.

And as I have demonstrated, their are plenty of places to visit with rational articles on the emails. Now the dust is settling, the overall effect of the emails released actually paints a group of scientists dedicated to scientific truth.

Why have the hackers only released only 1000 odd emails out of many thousands? Well, one explanation is maybe because the rest can’t be twisted out of context and show the scientists simply doing their job in an overwhelmingly collegial and honest atmosphere.

On spending time with them it became apparent that they were a fully functioning person with intelligence and a sense of humour inside a vehicle that didn’t respond to their requests and I had to reflect on what it must be like for them as a whole person (not physical) inside a non responsive body.

It was a growing point for me and I have thought often on other peoples disabilities and the so called normal people.

The Climate Research Unit (CRU) E-mails Indicate the Emergence of ‘Tribal Science’.

Is this an Unexpected Outcome of the Internet?

During his last years, the late Aaron Wildavsky, then Dean of the School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, became more and more interested in the role of group ‘culture’ in shaping social behaviour. One of his observations was that the more the individual is incorporated into a bonded unit, the more the individual’s choice is subject to group determination.
Aaron was generally regarded as ‘the father of Public Policy’ and in this group of books and papers he was challenging the ‘rational man’ model of decision-making. He was not denying the importance of reason and scientific method, but was emphasising that human behaviour is also modified by strongly held beliefs and traditions, and in particular, by group loyalties.

I suspect if Aaron were still alive he would be setting a bunch of his graduate students onto this episode of the leaked Climate Research Unit emails as a textbook example of how a ‘culture of group belief’ can impact on the behaviour of the supposedly rational and impartial people who are presumed to occupy the scientific community.

These emails may be an early demonstration of one of the downsides of the internet, and of email in particular.

The rapid and prolific communication enabled by email certainly promotes the free and widespread sharing of information and knowhow.

But the same ease of communication may well be promoting the development of inward-looking and intolerant tribal cultures that can seriously undermine the long established disciplines and traditions of the scientific community.

Scientists have always been passionate about their theories. Dawkins, Teller, Feynman, Pinker, Gould and Gliek are hardly famous for their lack of commitment to their beliefs.

But prior to the internet, such scientists have tended to be passionate individuals working at their desks, within their own studies, and sharing their ideas with suitably sceptical colleagues and graduate students.

Fifteen years ago I presented a paper to the QUEST and Associates AGM in Florida, on how the internet would promote what I called ‘Tribal Marketing’.

The release of the CRU emails suggests that sadly the internet has now promoted the development of ‘Tribal Science’.

Certainly the key players, as revealed in this collection of leaked emails, have been behaving like members of a fervent and passionate tribe – defending their territory, shaping evidence to support their beliefs, and waging war on outsiders.

Wildavsky would have been the first to point out that there is no need to call on conspiracy theory, or financial incentives, to explain this tribal behaviour; just the power of the culture of the group.

The CRU team and their internet colleagues had taken on the intolerant behaviour and intemperate language of the fervent tribes that build up around the more extremist blog sites on the Internet.

Maybe the Royal Society and similar organisations will need to develop a new set of protocols and charters to deal with this new phenomenon.

kaya, thanks for sharing the pic of your beautiful daughter. What is scary is that the Govt has a new screening programme for unborn children with Down Syndrome. I remember seeing a TV programme about a woman with a Down Syndrome child who had to make the decision when she found out that her child was going to be born with DS.

She decided to have it, and she mentioned that the child had brought such joy to their family; DS children, she said, are known to be very affectionate. After that she actually adopted another two DS children I think.

There is a simple test that has the potential to reduce in the incidence of Downs births by around 50%. Why shouldn’t it be used?

If there was a treatment we could use to INCREASE Downs births by 50%, do you think we should use that so we’d have more Affectionate Downs kiddies?

    All life is precious.

That’s not the evidence I see before my eyes.

  119. Leonidas (134) Says:

You’re a fuckin heartless bastard Borker, I pray to God that you get to experience life in a less than “optimal” fashion.

  120. billyborker (1047) Says:

what’s heartless about wanting to reduce suffering?

  121. Andrew W (1570) Says:

Owen, I think your suggestion is a load of bollocks designed to advance your organisations agenda of questioning the mainstream view on AGW.

The internet is a form of communications that, like other advances in communications before it, improves the flow of information and the understanding between what would otherwise be disparate groups.
The development of communications has lead to what we call the global village, we recognise that it is the regimes that do not want their people to understand the rest of the world who work to suppress internet access.

All through cyberspace we have blogs such as this one where people of differing views from the whole world can and do interact, in the short term this may not lead to a heck of a lot of minds being changed, but for some of us it at least leads to a recognition that even those we most vehemently disagree with usually have to them at least, good reasons for their views, that they are genuine in their views.

You’re suggesting that without the web, cliques wouldn’t form, but cliques have always existed.

  122. Leonidas (134) Says:

In by doing so you deny them the chance to experience happiness and fulfillment, which they are capable of.

It has been my privilege to meet several DS people, and suffering would never apply as a descriptor.

    Try again you heartless bastard.

  123. Andrew W (1570) Says:

“The CRU team and their internet colleagues had taken on the intolerant behaviour and intemperate language of the fervent tribes that build up around the more extremist blog sites on the Internet.”

Comparing the CRU emails to the intolerant behaviour and intemperate language of extremist blog sites is just bloody ridiculous. Haven’t you read any of Redbaiter’s and D4J’s comments? and I hope you don’t regard kiwiblog as an extremist blog site.

This is in reference to a blog post I made ages ago about testing for Downs and aborting. Kaya read it and chose to engage in vile insult, I didn’t play, but today, she wants to play the man not the ball, and you all fall swooning at her feet.

So abuse away, but get the ducks lined up in a row first.

For the record, I believe we shoud test for Downs, and other genetic disorders, and abort.

    @billyborker

I really shouldn’t because as I said above I think you’re being deliberately provocative, but just in case you’re not and there’s some hope for you…

You can surely see the difference between testing for genetic defects and giving parents the choice (agonising though it may be, and I’m not at all sure I’d opt to have it done if I had any more children) and mandating abortion in such circumstances?

And a reference, please, for your assertion that Downs Syndrome children grow into “criminal adults”.

I have never seen any definitive clinical study proving the link. I think you’re confusing the incidence of MPAs (minor physical abnormalities) and aggressive behaviour (which can predicate criminality, though not necessarily so).

MPAs are present in a number of conditions including FAS (foetal alcohol syndrome) entirely unrelated to Downs but whose sufferers do tend to show up disproportionately in criminal statistics.

In “The Causes and Cures of Criminality” Hans Eysenck and Gisli Gudjonsson note that:

…the “threshold” at which diathesis is turned into actual criminal conduct is determined by various social and environmental factors such as unemployment, severity of laws and rigors of enforcement.

    They also note that:

No studies seem to have been done comparing criminals with non-criminals with respect to MPAs…

…but perhaps you know something they don’t? For my part I can say that having dealt now with dozens of cases and visited prisons and seen thousands of prisoners I have not seen a single Downs Syndrome person amongst them.

The more I hear from you, the more your attitude toward criminality coupled with your complete ignorance as to its causation make you and Garth McVicar the perfect bedfellows.

“Ugly” – entirely subjective. I truly found kaya’s daughter beautiful. OTOH I find Paris Hilton repulsive, and not just for her behaviour. Many disagree (as the worldwide outbreak of crotch-scratching that follows in her wake attests). So we’re going to start culling based on appearance now? I’d better check into the nearest processing centre for turning into compost then.

“Retarded” – in the purely scientific sense, yes, though it’s rather an archaic term now. However there are plenty of people who don’t suffer from Downs, or any other visible abnormality, and yet who are “retarded”. For instance the perfectly normal-looking lunatic against whom I am endeavouring to get a permanent restraining order (working pro bono for a friend) writes stuff like:

also – public disclosure statement, I believe the judge in my chambers sess votag, knows cops are like honestly totally bent over. he said you have no defence – what he said, or cops may not even have any, I wonder if I will get an offer?

Hardly the writings of someone whose mind is working normally. Yet not able to be identified in the womb. So what do we do with them, billy? Shoot them after birth? This guy is in his 30s… is a spot of retrospective eugenics okay then? (If you think so, please let me know. I’ll have you dispatch him and effectively kill two loons* with one stone, as it were).

I’d argue that there are plenty of “retarded” people (if one takes the definition as “intellectually sub normal”) people in the world, most of whom do not suffer from Downs. Have you ever tried to debate the validity of a ticket with a parking inspector, for instance?

“Useless” – what, like a List MP? Or someone chronically unemployed? Or what about the aged and infirm? Do you envisage a sort of “Logan’s Run” scenario to deal with them?

You’ve retreated from “criminals” because you know it’s statistically unprovable to a list of entirely subjective criteria for which, presumably, some Tribunal would be the judge. Headed by yourself, no doubt?

    * Excuse the avian pun, it’s not meant to be an ad hominem, I just couldn’t resist.

The vast silent reading majority on Kiwiblog just has to read one of Phool’s rants, work out this is typical of the Greens, and make a rational deduction. Phool=Greens=Electoral Roadkill.

    Lovely cricket match btw.

UN scientists turn on each other: UN Scientist Declares Climategate colleagues Mann, Jones and Rahmstorf ’should be barred from the IPCC process’ — They are ‘not credible any more’
UN IPCC’s Eduardo Zorita: ‘By writing these lines I will just probably achieve that a few of my future studies will, again, not see the light of publication’
Friday, November 27, 2009 – By Marc Morano – Climate Depot

A UN scientist is declaring that his three fellow UN climate panel colleagues “should be barred from the IPCC process.” In a November 26, 2009 message on his website, UN IPCC contributing author Dr. Eduardo Zorita writes: “CRU files: Why I think that Michael Mann, Phil Jones and Stefan Rahmstorf should be barred from the IPCC process.”

Zorita writes that the short answer to that question is: Short answer: “Because the scientific assessments in which they may take part are not credible anymore.”

Zorita indicates that he is aware that he is putting his career in jeopardy by going after the upper echelon of UN IPCC scientists. “By writing these lines I will just probably achieve that a few of my future studies will, again, not see the light of publication,” Zorita candidly admits, a reference to the ClimateGate emails discussing how to suppress data and scientific studies that do not agree with the UN IPCC views.

Zorita was a UN IPCC Contributing Author of Fourth Assessment Report in 2007. Since 2003, Zorita as headed the Department of Paleoclimate and has been a senior scientist at the Institute for Coastal Research of the GKSS Research Centre in Germany. Zorita has published more than 70 peer-reviewed scientific studies.

Zorita’s stunning candor continued, noting that scientists who disagreed with the UN IPCC climate view were “bullied and subtly blackmailed.”

“In this atmosphere, Ph D students are often tempted to tweak their data so as to fit the ‘politically correct picture’. Some, or many issues, about climate change are still not well known. Policy makers should be aware of the attempts to hide these uncertainties under a unified picture. I had the ‘pleasure’ to experience all this in my area of research,” Zorita explained.
[Zorita's full statement is reprinted below.]

    Continuing fallout of ClimateGate

Zorita’s revelations are the latest in a series of continuing fallout to the global warming establishment and to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), since the email and data scandal dubbed “ClimateGate” broke earlier this month.

Zorita’s defection from the global warming establishment comes after the shocking news today that one of the scientists employed at ground zero of what has been termed “ClimateGate” has suggested disbanding the United Nations climate panel, the IPCC. See: Pressure Mounts From Inside: Disband IPCC? Scientist from U. of East Anglia Suggests ‘UN IPCC has run its course…politicizes climate science…authoritarian, exclusive form of knowledge production’ – Mike Hulme Excerpt: ClimateGate reveals science has become ‘too partisan, too centralized…more usually associated with social organization within primitive cultures’

In addition, scientists from around the world are now demanding that the “ClimateGate” scientists be banned from future UN IPCC climate work. See: More ClimateGate Fallout: Prominent German Scientist Declares ‘Compromised’ UN Scientists should be excluded from IPCC and Peer-Review Process – November 24, 2009

Meanwhile, pressure to fire or resign continues to increase for the man at the center of the ClimateGate scandal, Phil Jones. See: Phil Jones, the Fall Guy? Scientist in climate change ‘cover-up’ storm told to quit – UK Daily Mail – Nov. 25, 2009

    Definitely bruv. Looked bloody painful.

Bout time we had someone of substance in a national team, instead of the many bad behaving, underperformaing prima donnas. Elliot has a bit of that same substance about him IMO.

    @Leonidas

…Hey Phil, Has anyone made such an outrageous assertion such as that made today, with respect to your kids? Because if so, that’s just not on and I think you have every right to be damn angry about it.

Well, I’ve only been on KiwiBlog for a bit over a year, and in my experience, no. The Phool is completely delusional and lives in a Quixotic world where his opponents are evil, and he slays them with a quick retort. In the real-world, he’s a parasitic fuckwit with no real friends. Foot fungus has more charisma and wit. So the delusion thing is infinitely preferable for him.

Just when you thought Gordon wasn’t already a total prick:

An international satellite monitoring system to check countries comply with new climate change targets was proposed by Gordon Brown last night as a way of binding developing nations into a new deal on the environment.

It is part of a desperate bid by the Prime Minister to ensure a climate change deal can be salvaged at the Copenhagen summit in 10 days time.

Last night at a meeting in Trinidad he reached agreement with Commonwealth leaders and Nicolas Sarkozy, the French President, to put forward a new £10 billion fund to tackle what Mr Brown said was “a climate emergency.”

He said the Launch Fund would allow the world to break the “deadlock” over a deal at Copenhagen and “get moving on climate change as quickly as possible”.

Mr Brown said: “’Together the collective power of the Commonwealth must be brought together to tackle a new historic injustice [another code word of the International Left], that of climate change.”

Ahead of the UN-sponsored climate change conference in the Danish capital, Mr Brown proposed a £10 billion rich-world fund – to which Britain would contribute £800 million – to give incentives to developing countries to halt deforestation, develop low-carbon energy sources and prepare for the effects of a warmer climate.
