  1. jackp (377) Says:

Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres has ruled out investigating the email, saying Mr Harawira was exercising his freedom of opinion…… This was in today’s Herald.

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!! Even the race commissioner is a racist!!! The politics is extremely corrupt.

  2. Grant Michael McKenna (819) Says:

    Laws Bad, Harawira Good.
    Got it.

  3. Grant Michael McKenna (819) Says:

The shooting in Texas seems to indicate that the US does not understand that Islamist extremism is their enemy- how did the man make Major?

  4. Pete George (4298) Says:

It’s worth listening to more of the story from de Bres:

Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres also called for an apology, and suggested on Radio New Zealand this morning that Mr Harawira deliver that in Parliament.

  5. Redbaiter (9301) Says:

“how did the man make Major?”

Political correctness- the deceit that successfully cloaks so much left wing evil.

  6. Johnboy (2297) Says:

Red Kens gone. Now for Joris.

The shooting in Texas seems to indicate that the US does not understand that Islamist extremism is their enemy- how did the man make Major?

Perhaps he did it by being good at his job? Perhaps there is a lot more to this story than the simple religious identification you seek. Perhaps he simply cracked after seeing so many mangled bodies and minds in the cause of …? What is the war about, again?

  8. NeillR (328) Says:

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10608166
Tony Ryall’s just gone up a whole heap in my estimation.

  9. Chris2 (196) Says:

jackp @8:10am – yes true, but it also means that everyone is now free to call maoris “black motherfuckers who have been raping white women and stealing our property for hundreds of years”, without their risking being investigated by the Race Relations Commission.

  10. Grant Michael McKenna (819) Says:

bb- he had bad performance reviews, so being good at his job isn’t the reason. When it comes to ’simple religious identification’, why have you conflated Islamists with Islam?

  11. MikeNZ (1491) Says:

I think GMM is correct, there is more to this story than we know and it will come out despite the MSM.
Islam and the imam he studied under won’t come out of it in a good light if the truth is told.

  12. Yvette (523) Says:

Should Rodney and Hone go . . . or this
“Almighty God, humbly acknowledging our need for Thy guidance in all things, and laying aside all private and personal interests, we beseech Thee to grant that we may conduct the affairs of this House and of our country to the glory of Thy holy name, the maintenance of true religion and justice, the honour of the Queen, and the public welfare, peace, and tranquillity of New Zealand, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”
And is Joris de Bres serving the ‘public welfare, peace and tranquility of New Zealand’ or should he step down as well?

  13. malcolm (1105) Says:

A competition. Explain the purpose of the Race Relations Commissioner. In two sentences or less. Bonus point for a haiku.

  14. malcolm (1105) Says:

My entry: There is no purpose.

  15. Yvette (523) Says:

    Dedicated to Joris de Bres

Intend you to say of another, other than good,
Perceived wisdom suggests it’s best that you should,
Withhold your views, until in the other man’s shoes,
You have walked a mile – then have your say!
Because now he’s left barefoot and you’re a mile away.

Hone Harawera should know that if it were not for the “white motherf___ers”
and “puritanical bullshit” he likely wouldn’t have shoes.

I think a haiku has only seventeen words, so this is disqualified – oh, well . . .

  16. MikeNZ (1491) Says:

    Hone of course!
    But never the prayer.
I’d rather that we only have people in parliament that both mean it when they say it and obey it’s sentiments.

Oops that kicks out 98% of them.
Hey why stop at parliament ;-)

  17. Andrew W (1570) Says:

“how did the man make Major?”

Possibly as a medical officer he isn’t a “line officer”, he would have been assigned the rank as a doctor, not as a soldier or leader (think Frank Burns).

I heard that he’d tried to get out of the army some time ago when he felt a conflict between his religion and duties developing, along with problems of abuse from soldiers because of his religion. So it was probably a disaster waiting to happen, it’s sad that it panned out how it did.

  18. MikeNZ (1491) Says:

Read this earlier about him having mandatory counseling for his behaviour?

“How did Nidal Malik Hasan rise to the rank of major in the U.S. Army with his background? I’m not talking about his Muslim faith. I’m talking about his troubled history – the disciplinary record of inappropriate proselytizing, the extremist Internet postings, the statements to comrades about American foreign policy, the mandatory counseling he had to receive because of his behavior. How could he ever have been placed in such a position of authority?”

  21. Murray (4721) Says:

“Perhaps there is a lot more to this story than the simple religious identification you seek.”

He was yelling allah akbar is your first clue sherlock.

  22. trout (208) Says:

Hone is a throwback. He is clearly frustrated with conventional politics, and the accommodation reached between the Maori party and the Nats. Every parliamentary session throws up somebody who cannot abide the system or feels emasculated by it; Hone is one of these. He is more comfortable with the angry protests, the outrageous rhetoric, and the sycophantic groupies, that are now of the past. I do not expect him to stay in Parliament.

  23. Murray (4721) Says:

Hone is not a throwback, the reall issue for the Maori Party is that hes blown their cover. Sharples and Turia have leanered to moderate their language, he hasn’t.

You’ll note they intend to keep him on and he has already said he does not think theres anything worg with WHAT he said, just HOW he said it.

    Don’t say you weren’t warned.

  24. MikeNZ (1491) Says:

On another note perhaps Mr Mises had an idea of our structural problems apart from funding flower arranging classes.

“Mises’s solution follows logically from his warnings. You can’t fix what’s broken by breaking it yet again. Stop the credit gavage. Stop inflating. Don’t encourage consumption, but rather encourage saving and the repayment of debt. Let all the lame businesses fail—no bailouts. (You see where I’m going with this.) The distortions must be removed or else the precipice from which the system will inevitably fall will simply grow higher and higher.”

  25. PinkGina (73) Says:

    Well what does????

  28. Andrew W (1570) Says:

    Thanks for the links Mike.
I see nothing in them that refutes the points I’m making. He felt a conflict between his religion at his duty as a US soldier, his (out spoken) beliefs were turning him against his fellow soldiers and the army wasn’t letting him out, I suspect for two reasons; his superiors, who didn’t like him, they were happy to punish him by keeping him there, and the army is very short of psychiatrists. Obviously there are other ways that he could have resolved this conflict that would have been preferable, suicide or desertion, but he was so twisted up that he took the vengeful martyr option.
Obviously the army was very much aware of his problems, and didn’t act to resolve them as it should have, and those problems were obviously affecting his ability to do his job. Do you have a better explaination for why the army didn’t address the issue in a proactive way?

    Andrew W
I do not know why the USArmy didn’t sort him earlier and suspect that like all bureaucracies it may have been a time issue alongside PC claptrap and or regulations.
One issue may have been did he normally carry firearms and was that viewed as lessened the risk?
As a psychiatrist I don’t think he did as a normal course of duty.

That the FBI were looking at him and who in his hierarchy knew and didn’t suspend him I don’t know.
Frankly I don’t think any organisation nowadays would think they can send Muslims to do military duties in Muslim led countries without doing vetting big time, and if that didn’t happen here, what does it point to? organisation failure perhaps?

The reality is the US forces are stretched, which may partly explain this.
In fact some reports state that the long term viability of the force and US society is being damaged as the “war perse is not being viewed as WWII was” it is disconnected from mainstream.
Though not in the country towns who are bearing the brunt of casualties and especially disabled ex servicemen and women I might add.

The time off of deployment is being massaged down by the Generals due to numbers and needs which is putting pressure on communities and businesess.

  32. Will de Cleene (386) Says:

David Farrar has been on holiday for four days thus far. 17 posts from DPF, two from guest bloggers. So much for going cold turkey!

  33. Pete George (4298) Says:

The reality is the US forces are stretched, which may partly explain this.

Possibly a major factor. If they removed all those who expressed concerns about going to Iraq or Afghanistan they might end up with a recruitment crisis. I think they had already relaxed enrollment criteria to get enough numbers of (mugs) people willing to go.

Having spoken to a lot of WWII bomber crews Phil, I have yet to meet one who enjoyed doing what they did. Thos jihadis going allah akbar are cumming in their pants with glee as they cut the head off a bound man with a kitchen knife. If you can’t see the difference you are more fucked up than I thought you were.

  36. joe90 (103) Says:

This open letter from Conor Friedersdorf to Jonah Goldberg is interesting.

I’m writing this letter as a fan – I’ve tremendous respect for the pioneering work you did at National Review Online, your attempts to inject humor into political writing, and the enjoyable debates you’ve done with Peter Beinart. But I’m also a friendly critic, here to challenge your take on the current state of the GOP, the conservative movement, and the country. Perhaps I can persuade you that certain of your positions are wrongly held, though I’d be as satisfied were I moved by counterarguments.

It is actually surprising that the gulf separating our attitudes is so deep. As a native of Orange County, California, the people I most respect in this world – my parents and two sets of grandparents – are all self-described conservative Republicans. My involvement in politics began in response to what I regarded as grave flaws in leftist campus politics at Pomona College, and the dubious actions of Democrats during the Gray Davis era in California, when I witnessed giveaways to public employee unions that were arguably the most fiscally irresponsible measures in state history. The political writers I’ve read whose work most resonates are Burke, Hayek, and Milton Friedman. The bulk of President Obama’s domestic agenda strikes me as ill conceived at best—I worry about the unabated growth of the federal government, America’s perilous fiscal situation, and an approach to governance that relies on the enduring wisdom of elected and appointed officials.

But try as I might, I cannot muster any enthusiasm for the Republican Party, I am profoundly disillusioned by the state of the conservative movement, and though my background and political beliefs ought to make me a lock for GOP presidential candidates – were they running, I’d certainly prefer Ford, Reagan, George Bush Sr. or Bob Dole to a second Obama term – I am a solidly undecided voter as 2012 approaches.

  37. MikeNZ (1491) Says:

    Pete
    You are partly correct.
They already have recruitment issues in some areas which is being exacerbated by the increases in fatalities and disabled servicemen/women as units often draw geographically as it helps unit cohesion.

This is compounded with some units attracting the lessor qualified so their options in rehab are harder than those with trade and professional qualifications.

Questions are being asked of the Generals sending units to other theaters without the preferred family and retraining before redeployment.
Many units are National Guard too which has an impact on Business so the discussion is growing.

    “God is great”?

Seig Heil just means Hail Victory. Hardly offensive or emotionally charged if you translate it into English. It is the context. Just the same as jihadis who say God is great before every one of their murderous acts makes that particular exultation offensive to me.

Of course the ACT Party could have their own Private “Trougher in the Stocks” campaign. Send Hide around the country and make a charge for the public to have some fun. $45.00 for say 3 rotten to the core apples? The holiday fund would be paid off in no time

Sure, possibly. We don’t know. But I haven’t seen many comments that reserve judgement on the matter. One said something like, “She was probably dressed like she was 21,” which presumably means that 21-year-old women can wish for nothing better than to have a man unzip his fly down an alleyway.

The sanest response is, as usual, to reserve judgement where we don’t have all the facts.

Did I read somewhere this was around 3am? I’d have expected most out at that time to be legal adults.

And surely, having asked a drunken entertainer to accompany her & a friend down a dark alley to give them a kiss, it’s not so much what she might have wished for, but what on earth might she have expected?

No, we don’t have all the facts, but what we have heard reflects badly on the women and the entertainer in question.

    - is to be ignited by a report ordered by Harriet Harman, the Labour deputy leader and the minister responsible for equalities.

The report is due to be published in January.

Early drafts seen by ministers say wealth inequality has deepened, with the rungs on the ladder having grown further apart ..

    .. reducing social mobility.

It is also expected to underline the degree to which access to pensions and housing play a crucial role in entrenching inequalities in wealth and income.

Harman sees the report, which has been commissioned from a team of academics chaired by Professor John Hills ..

.. as a political opportunity for Labour to frame a progressive debate on inequality before the election.

Downing Street and the Treasury would be opposed to a new wealth tax, but there may be pressure for a tougher capital gains tax on main homes ..

.. or widening council tax bands.

It is also likely to lead to calls for wider employee share ownership and home ownership.

The Hills report will challenge the Tory policy of raising the threshold for inheritance tax to £1m ..

.. and is likely to endorse tax credits as an effective way of redistributing incomes.

Its preliminary findings show “whether it’s educational attainment, income, or housing ..

.. those from the most deprived backgrounds tend to do worse”.

The latest official government figures show 1% of the population owned approximately a fifth of the UK’s marketable wealth in 2003 ..

.. and half shared only 7% of the total wealth.

The results are even more skewed if housing is excluded, suggesting this form of wealth is more evenly distributed.

Wealth is less evenly distributed than income.

Harman’s equality bill, currently going through the Commons, will require ministers, departments and public bodies such as local authorities, primary care trusts, and regional development agencies ..

.. to consider what action they can take to reduce socio-economic inequalities..”

  78. Pete George (4298) Says:

Some of the available sketchy facts – the female complainant was not one of then two who initially accompanied the “entertainer” down the alley for a “kiss”.

The charge arose from an incident earlier this year after the entertainer left a Wellington venue about 3.30am.

Defence lawyer Ron Mansfield said the defendant was recognised by three young females, who approached him in the street and asked if they could kiss him.

“There was some discussion,” he said. “There was some crude propositioning.”

The man and two of the females went to an alley. The third female followed later and that was when that the indecent act occurred.

Mr Mansfield said the defendant, who was intoxicated at the time, had misread the situation when he moved the head of one of the girls down to his genitals. The man had no inkling that what had happened had caused offence and believed it had been consensual.

Mr Mansfield said the man had no previous convictions and what he did was entirely out of character.

He made an early guilty plea, was genuinely remorseful, had written a letter of apology to the complainant and was prepared to pay reparations of $5000.

    http://www.voxy.co.nz/national/entertainer-seeks-discharge-over-indecent-act/5/28651

So the man has accepted what he did was wrong, and he doesn’t seem to have claimed the complainant “asked for it”. Although I thought at one stage he also said he was so drunk he couldn’t remember it either, but I suspect that is sometimes used as a convenient excuse not to answer questions.

  79. Paul G. Buchanan (173) Says:

Funny, Ryan Sproull, that you, of all people, should say that we need to reserve judgement until we have all the facts.

Were you not one of the editors of Craccum who published my leaked rude email without trying to find out about the full circumstances of the case (including the emails before and after the rude one, as well as the fact that the student’s extension request was never substantiated, nor did she ever make a formal written complaint to anyone, or that the leak was in fact orchestrated by pro-Palestinian activists with an ax to grind with me about my supposed pro-Israeli beliefs)? And were you not one of those who, in comments threads here on the subject of my dismissal, who repeated the lie that I must have done something else in order to get dismissed (a claim refuted by the ERA)? What I do recall is that you and others involved in disseminating the email went very quiet once the dismissal was ruled to be unjustified.

Since you did not have too much concern about the facts then, and were not man enough to admit that you insinuations were false once the truth began to come out, what makes you so pious all of a sudden?

  80. Kris K (1755) Says:

    malcolm [November 8th, 2009 at 11:06 am],

Kris, thanks for the reply yesterday. Sorry for the slow reply. Kiddies went to Peter Pan and it turned into an all afternoon and evening thing.

    No worries.
I’m a day late responding as well – hope you see this. As you will no doubt understand Sundays are a full day for me: am and pm church services; our monthly church lunch, and round to friends for a cuppa after the lunch. I didn’t even get online yesterday at all.

OK, so you think Muslims have unwittingly fallen into a trap set by Satan. And God is fighting a battle save us all from Satan. And has given us a route to be saved via Christ.

I wouldn’t necessarily go so far as to say ‘unwittingly’; I believe many Muslims are willing participants, but yes, there is a degree of satanic deception. It is worth googling for the testimonies of Muslims who have converted to Christianity – they express the satanic nature of Islam from a first hand perspective having lived through the process. And yes, God desires that all would come to Him in repentance through Christ’s sacrifical payment on the cross.

If God created the universe and everything in it, why did he create Satan? OK so maybe Satan was a mistake. It all got out of hand. If so why doesn’t God just destroy Satan? And all would be honky dory. Anyway how could this happen as God is all knowing? So he must have foreseen this? Also Satan seems to have worked out quite well, as he’s an effective recruiting and retention tool. You’re always warning us about Hell.

A question many ask – much like why did God allow Hitler to rise to power, etc. Like us, Satan (and all angels) was given free will. He chose to reject God’s authority and as a result fell. God indeed foresaw Satan’s rebellion, and eventually Satan will be judged, found guilty, and confined to the lake of fire. All Christ rejecters will suffer the same fate. Why God doesn’t intervene now is really a matter of maximising those that will come to Him by free will. In a sense Satan is a recruiting tool, along with the evil that resides in the heart of fallen man. Kind of an evil partnership where man essentially enters into a contract with Satan.
Bottom line: man either sides with Satan (the default position), or acknowledges his sin, repents, receives Christ, and becomes a child of God (a similar position to Adam’s prefall state).

So yes, ‘evil’ sort of points to God’s goodness and love. Some either see the evil for what it is, and this draws them towards God. While others blame God for evil in the world (rather than Satan and sinful men), and use this as an excuse to reject God’s provision of salvation through Christ.

With regards to Satan and Hell, is God just winging it (making the best of a bad situation) or was it all part of the plan? If it wasn’t plan then can God really be all knowing?

While not perhaps God’s ideal plan, God’s foreknowledge can use Satan’s attempts to thwart His plan to His advantage. For instance, if you read the story of Job (I encourage you to) you can see that Satan had to ask God for permission for each and every test he put to Job. Job lost pretty much everything through Satan’s testing (children, wealth, health), but he came through it all and God blessed him twofold.. In the same way God sometimes ‘permits’ Satan to test individuals with the aim of bringing that person to Christ. Often this may be the only thing that will get through to a hard hearted, unrepentent sinner.

An example would be a Christian praying for a friend/relative to come to Christ. The person keeps rejecting God’s ’subtle’ promptings. Eventually God may cause that person to lose their health/wealth/relative so that they are brought to a place of rock bottom; where they no longer have any pride, and are prepared to come in repentance to Christ.

Do you ever think it’s like a sloppy movie script? One that hasn’t been thought through properly, but nonetheless needs to be bought together at the end. So it gets more and more incredible. Or something which started out as a simple idea (God made the world and us) and has been added to over the years, each time another question is asked. A hole is found so another patch is slapped on.

While God doesn’t ‘write the whole script’, He knows how the ‘movie’ ends. Perhaps a good analogy would be that God writes the plot outline, the majority of the script, and directs the ‘movie’. Other contributers are Satan (and his hosts) and fallen men with freewill. So while Satan and fallen men may ‘flavour’ the ‘movie’, they don’t alter the final outcome.

God knowing the choices each of us will make doesn’t remove our individual ability to make those choices. God will encourage each of us to come to Him, but ultimately the choice is still fully our own. And we bare entirley the consequences of rejecting God’s offer of salvation through Christ. This really is the danger of freewill; the ability to reject what we can never purchase for ourselves – free salvation.

Take the thing about Jesus paying for our future sins with his suffering on the cross. That’s just silly. Who was he paying? God? What kind of payment was it anyway, if Christ was really God? Or his son? Like inter-company pricing to transfer profits without attracting tax. How does a bit of suffering pay for my sins? It’s just a token payment at best. And why does a bit of suffering cancel out all future sin. Also why am I born with sin? Seems a bit unfair.

When Christ died on the cross He paid for the sins of ALL men through ALL of history. Simply put, if ALL men chose to come to Christ in repentance, then His death was sufficient payment to cover this. This includes the individual’s past, present and future sins. So even as a Christian, when I sin, and I do, then those sins are also covered by Christ’s death.
Yes, in a sense Christ the Son made the payment to God the Father on our (ALL men) behalf.

In simplistic terms; say you murdered someone, were convicted, charged, and sentenced to death. Not only that, but the person you murdered had a brother, and His father was the judge who had sentenced you. So you’re headed for the ‘gallows’. At the last minute the very judge who sentenced you makes you an offer. He explains that while you are guilty, there is someone else who is willing to die in your place. This person is none other than the brother of the one you murdered; the judges other son. All you have to do is acknowledge your guilt in true repentance, and accept the offer extended to you by the judge. If you accept the offer the judges other son dies in your place, and the judge adopts you into his family; you become his adopted son. If you reject his offer then you have to die yourself in accordance with the original sentencing.

In the above ’story’ the judge is God the Father, and the two brothers are both ‘played’ by Christ. Christ is the one ‘murdered’ by our sins. And Christ is also the brother who dies in our place to make restitution for our sins.

While some may think it unfair that we are (ALL) born with sin as Adam and Eve’s descendants; we also disqualify ourselves by committing sin personally. In a sense we fail on two counts. Christ’s death pays for both original (Adam and Eve’s) sin, and our personal sins.

Does any of this trouble you?

Not at all. I am extremely grateful that in coming to Christ, and accepting His payment on behalf of my sins, that I no longer have to suffer the consequences of my guilt

When you balance God’s love and justice with man having freewill to accept or reject salvation, then I really do see the perfect harmony of God’s judgement of his creatures. As I said before; we are all guilty by default, but God desires that all would come to Him in repentance that we might be free from the curse of spiritual death (in hell). The choice really is ours.

2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Actually you are all pissing wind and Phill is in no danger what so ever form this Govt. Here is an analysis of their promises before the election and their actions subsequent to the election. If anything welfare is more entrenched than ever.

    NATIONAL’S BROKEN PROMISES

Information obtained under the Official Information Act shows that the National government has failed to implement the welfare policy promises it made during the 2008 election campaign.

Welfare commentator Lindsay Mitchell said that she had been provided with information from the Ministry of Social Development which confirms that none of the promises laid out below has been implemented. The first column shows the promises and reasons for them, as detailed in National’s manifesto; the second column provides the information from the Ministry of Social Development confirming none of the promises has been actioned.

“National produced an 11-page benefits policy prior to the 2008 election and they have a mandate and responsibility to deliver. Probably the worst omission is a failure to introduce a part-time work test on the domestic purposes benefit. Australia introduced work-testing in 2006 and a report released by the Centre for Independent Studies last week shows that the number of Parenting Payment (Single) recipients has dropped by 21 percent. The report concludes the drop is due to a combination of movement off welfare and transfer to the unemployment benefit. By contrast, New Zealand’s DPB numbers have risen by 6 percent in the past year.”

“National also said it would ‘address growth in sickness and invalid numbers’ yet the total number has increased by a further 5 percent in this year alone.”

“To win votes on false promises is fraudulent. National promised an ‘unrelenting focus on work’ but, after almost a year in government, is not delivering for its voters . Even worse, it’s not delivering for people on benefits who need more carrot and stick to become self reliant.”

“The welfare bill is the government’s biggest at $19.4 billion a year or 30 percent of core expenditure. This is where National needs to be focussing its attention and honouring its promises.”

What National promised (a)/What National delivered(b)

1.(a) Re-naming ‘Personal Development and Employment Plans’ because, “It is not the government’s role to help people develop a plan for social activities.”1

    (b) Please note that the Ministry has received no advice to discontinue PDEPs and no decisions have been made to change the name of these plans.2

2.(a) A requirement that the validity of a second medical certificate for a sickness benefit be reduced from 13 weeks to 4 because, “This will ensure more frequent assessments from the person’s doctor.”1
