Russia and are hypocrites. There are many ways of being protectionist.

For example, Russia forcing foreign investment partners to sell out, as in the oil development in Sakhalin. Russia in banning exports of logs (take our forestry products processed or not at all).

For example, China's manipulation of its exchange rate, keeping it fixed artificially low. That's a form of protectionism used earlier by Germany and Japan, and most successfully. China's extremely lax enforcement of intellectual property rights is another form of protection -- we'll do as you like with your intellectual property, but we'll protect our intellectual property in your country.

Not to worry.

After all, it's only a bit of infighting among socialist friends. The Chinese and Russian's way of welcoming the Messiah Obama to their club.

Actually I didn't notice that irony. I was too shocked by the Great One doing a penitent "I am so sorry" bow to Emperor Akihito (and then getting his flunkies to try and spin it as just following protocol).

Where's the irony? The US has always been one of the world's most protectionist economies, rarely practicing what it preaches in "free trade".

Yes, very ironic. And I'm sure they have the same good intentions that the West did in spreading "free trade" in the first place. Live by the sword...
