Grumpy
Palin's not stupid-she saw what Perot did to Bush 41 and he had a billion of his own cash to burn. If she's a serious contender, she'll bide her time, mellow out, get much better informed and there's heaps of time to have a tilt at the top job. I'd bet good money on her not even running in the GOP primary.

Why do you care, sillyoldtwat? Your Commie cousin wants to do some subterfuge anyway, I do hope he gets caught out with his nutrootery and splits his party.

Compounding this poll is anti-incumbent sentiment being the highest it's been in two decades. If a week is a long time in politics, the next year will be an epoch.

kiwi in america and if Palin decides to stand for the job as president as a conservative what happens ?
Obviously the undereducated godly believe they have a duty to vote for her, but what about moderate Republicans and independents, would they vote for a woman who believes it is good form for the US military to take on the Russians in Georgia ?

Oh and that Senate defection - one aging Arlen Spectre who jumped ship when faced with approval ratings as PA Senator below 40% (usually a death knell for re-election) and running 15 points behind his primary challenger Toomey.

Now that he switched to becoming a Democrat, he still trails Toomey in general election polls by more than the MOE and in some polls even trails his likely Democrat primary challenged Sistak so its a move that hasn't worked out too well for Spectre or the Dems.

And as for far right GOP nominee for President in 2012 - well right now the trio most favoured are Huckabee, Romney and Pawlenty none of which are considered far right (except by the far left). Huckabee was attacked for being fiscally weak, Romney for social policy equivocations necessary to get elected in very left leaning MA and Pawlenty a GOP Gov in left leaning MN. Oh you mean Palin - last I saw she was trailing far behind. All bets are off if General Patreaus decides to do an Eisenhower.

Apparently Obama had a chat with Helen Clark about it. She said to check for fairies in his garden, and if he didn’t find any then it was just a rogue poll.

Chris Carter's working for Obama now?
Is he taking two salaries?

Countess
What factuous piffle! There have been 5 Special Elections in the House since the 111th Congress convened (Senate vacancies are appointed by the respective State's Governor for a term until the next election). The results for the Democrats have been as follows:

NY 20 (vacated by Karen Gillebrand who took Clinton's NY Senate seat): 08 Vote 62 D/38 R - Special Election of 31/3/09: 50.2 D/49.8 R
DEM -23

IL 5 (vacated by Rahm Emanuel now Obama's Chief of Staff): 08 Vote 74 D/22 R - Special Election of 7/4/09: 69 D/24 R
DEM -7

CA 32 (vacated by Sollis who became Obama's Sec of Labor): 08 Vote No challenger but in 06 and 04 Sollis faced a Libertarian opponent and vote split from left/right was almost identical 85/15 - Special Election of 14/7/09 62 D/33 R
DEM -41

CA 10 (vacated by Tauschner who joined the Obama Admin): 08 Vote 65 D/31 R - Special Election 5/11/09: 53 D/43 R
DEM - 24

NY 23 (vacated by McHugh who became Sec of Army) was an exceptional circumstance as evidenced by a closed room selection that choose uber-liberal Scozzafava to run for the GOP. Add the actual GOP nominee's vote to Hoffman's vote and the Democrat Owen would've been beaten. Had their been a primary, Scozzafava would never have been the nominee.

If you look at Special Elections throughout 2009 in State Legislatures across the US the results are the same - huge swings to the GOP.

NJ Governor - solid Democrat State
2005 vs 2009: DEM -20
1 pickup in the General Assembly

VA Governor - went easily to Obama in 08
2005 vs 2009: DEM -25
Plus the GOP swept all the down ticket state wide elected offices and got 6 pick ups in the House of Delegates.

So if you want to take heart from all this for the Dems chances in 2010 then I've got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

The Gallup poll David posted (and it is backed up by Rasmussen who has the generic Republican v Democrat ballot at an 8 point GOP lead vs Gallup's 6% for all those polled) makes the point that the worm has turned. Independents are who actually got Obama elected - there arent enough blacks and under 30 voters to counterbalance the high voter turnout of seniors who lean solidly Republican. Its the Independents who are deserting Obama in droves and in the actual elections in NJ and VA, by a solid 2:1 margin.

Frustrating to see the opposition (in the first few posts above) framing their arguments in words and phrases that one can so easily identify as springing from that font of wisdom commonly called the mainstream media.

The political debate is so limited by this largely one dimensional discussion framework.

Its like the Democrats have a straight line of communication from their publicists to the mainstream media to the minds of the gormless, who suck up the propaganda so vociferously in slavish ignorance of the fact that there is an alternative perspective.

I think of these morons (that are the target of Democrat propaganda) when I see my granny drop bread crumbs into her gold fish bowl.

"This is what happens when you veer towards your base, and not the centre."

I think its more because the Republicans are showing signs of awakening from the Progessive induced coma they've been in over the last fourty years, and are preaching a return to governing by the principles of the Constitution.

The "Centre", as Mr. Farrar calls it, is really Socialism. Americans are not a nation of total dickheads. The more intelligent sectors can see what that Progressivism has done to Europe and almost every Western democracy, and they don't want to go there.

Well, not any further than they have anyway.

Its the revival of the Republican's core principles that is making them more popular.

Shame NZ didn't have a Constitution we could rally around as a focal point for opposition to Progressivism too.

Yes, foaming-at-the mouth, hard-line, far-right, knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing, religious, conservatives are evicting compassionate, educated, reasonable, sensible, bi-partisan, moderates from the Republican Party.

But the mirror image process is occurring in the Democratic Party.

Moderate voters are becoming increasing frustrated at being served up two increasingly unpalatable choices. It is no wonder that there preferences slosh around so dramatically. All they can do is reject the awful people they've got in the hope that their replacements might be better (which they probably wont).

Thats right the Democratic Party has won ALL the house by elections bar one since Nancy Pelosi became House Speaker. And even since Obama became President has won safe republican districts.
They have taken one extra Senator who has defected, and there will be more such as Snowe.
Plus the GOP congressman who voted for the Health bill will probably defect as well.

They have less money in hand than the Democratic Party.

They are likely to run a far right candidate for President ( or a moderate who lurches right.. go figure) which will be a disaster. But hallelujah let it be

But....but.....

How can this be when the Republicans are rent by internal divisions. After all we know that foaming-at-the mouth, hard-line, far-right, knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing, religious, conservatives are evicting compassionate, educated, reasonable, sensible, bi-partisan, moderates from the party.
We know that the Republicans are thereby dooming themselves to permanent minority status as a bunch of aging white men from the old Confederacy. The party of "No": provincial hicks with low-rent accents, lacking passports and Harvard degrees, futilely standing in the way of the progress wrought by leg-tingling members of the rainbow coalition.

Or maybe the MSM's common wisdom is as fundamentally and stupidly wrong about what's happening in America as they were a quarter century ago about Ronald Reagan's approach to the Soviet Union.

Looks quite good for the GOP but there are real warning signals around.
What alarms me is the rising right wing challenges to moderates. I see the conservatives are eying Olympia Snowe in a primary challenge in Maine, while in a straight fight against a Democrat the conservative would go down in a screaming heap.
The new phenomenon , the tea party movement, comes straight from the right wing conservative wing. The Glen Beck brigade mouthing weasly conservgativ platitudes.
I remember Ronald Reagan although a conservative, always believed in a big tent party not like the current crop of dwarf like so-called conservatives.
Major problem also for the GOP that there are no obvious flag bearers for the party in 2012. Sarah Palin !!!!!!
