A proper apology – which is just what I suggested the other day. Well done to Rodney for waking up.

I doubt the voters of Epsom were going to thrown him out anyway over this, though it may have affected his branding around NZ.

He gets a second chance, though he needs to understand the voters will forgive him once, probably not a second time for egregious mistakes.

As an ACT voter, Rodney went down a few notches in my estimation with this spending
But with the apology he is back to square one
I can’t recall seeing any other public apologies like that except where someone had apologised for cheating on their spouse

The Hide apology today was sincere and fulsome. He sure as hell isn’t the first of us to succumb to a burst of irrationality in our 40s. If Rodney keeps to what he promised today, he should hold his electoral seat and keep ACT in the House.

And hasn’t the Labour Party done well to keep out of this? When Labour MP Prasad, in Brussles with Hone, is reported to have said “what happens on the trip, stays on the trip” or words to that effect, you get the impression that Prasad was quite comfortable with Hone skiving off. Was it because he was glad to see an enemy about to get in the poo, or would he like to do the same thing?

I read down the list of blogs and thought Jesus I’ve got my addresses mixed. This must be the Standard. Because that’s about the quality of a lot of this stuff on here today. Apologists for a party that has been troughing large for the last 50 years and has yet to tackle the issue and indeed has resisted any change. Of course it didn’t need to while it was supported by its socialist partners at Liarbour.

If any of you think that Key should pay personally for Mrs Key to accompany him when he goes away anywhere, even within NZ but more particularly oversea’s then you are sad bastards. Key is our PM and his wife and family share that with him and we should be proud that they do. The opposite extreme is the pink cardy wearing Naomi Lange, (which was maybe before a lot of you were old enough to be out of nappies), what a disgrace to the Office of PM she was.
or more recently the spectacle of a bearded weirdie who was supposed to be Clarks “husband”. ( cast your minds back to last year and further).
Are these the people that we really want or do we want balanced people.
We need nice, good, happy people and we don’t get that with screwed up relationships. Good God the country is full of you sick buggers.

The issue here really is to pay these people properly and to ensure that there needs are properly recognized, as most of them are people with families and other responsibilities.
We can do that, cause Kiwi’s can do anything. Bill says so. All except to sort out the National Party Perks.

I’m satisfied that Hide’s apology came across as genuine, along with an admission he got carried away with power. Better than most (Claytons) apologies. If he has learnt from it should make him a better MP. Auckland in particular will benefit if he becomes more realistic.

The prob for Rortney is that he has just undergone a credibilityectomy. Perceptions of his credibility are all that got him there.

Its not good enough to say “sorry” in this case. This is a cornerstone issue that goes to the heart of his creds. He started off stupid and then got worse.

Saying sorry in these circs is the equivalent of saying “sorry I got sprung and hope that won’t happen again”. “Sorry” costs nothing. The public have had enough of weasle politicians. He could have come out of this with not only his credibility in tact, but possibly enhanced by dealing with it differently at the outset. Instead we were treated to the beligerent ‘I’m not a martyr’ response that has exploded in his face big time. Methinks that was the real Rortney talking. He just couldn’t help himself. Why? Perhaps ‘sorry’ is too inconsistent with his new found image and sense of self-importance that is revealed in his comments about Key and his fellow ministers.

hope my 100 demerits don’t stop my opinion.
I think that Rodney has started to believe his own publicity .. losing weight, dancing with the stars, young chick, partner in Govtmt etc .. his apology this afternoon seems to have brought home the fact that he is not as important as he thinks he is.
The Rodster has some major crawling to do.

Just seen Hide’s apology on the news. This is the best he could have done, and more than most MPs would do (Hone?). If he follows up by proving the lesson has sunk in – demonstrating sufficient humility in line with the level of power he has, and obviously no more travel perking – he should be able to recover from this. Stuffing up once can be forgiven, repeat infringements will not. In his language, another strike and he will probably be out in 2011.

What will be even more interesting is how his fellow ACT MPs deal with it. Until now, they only had to deal with the fact that their glorious canary had turned into the pinstripe breasted tit. It was all just mind-boggling stupidity until the small oversight regarding Hawaii. That not only puts an even less flattering and somewhat dodgy complexion on things, but in the light of Rortney’s (thanks Mike S) less than contrite response when this first all popped up, he has now demonstrated that he could have been quite at home in the last Government. Convenient memory lapses in the face of this sort of public pressure just don’t seem too convincing somehow.

If they are indeed the party of principle, then its inconceivable that he can continue as its leader without compromising the integrity of the rest of them. Will they walk the walk?

Hopefully this means the good folk of the Epsom electorate, of which I am one, will have their eyes opened to this deceitful fellow and vote accordingly to dump him in two years time.

It would help if the National party selects a proper candidate in 2011; somebody ‘normal’ for instance.
