Agree its very special.

$NZ 100 is rather high though – we got a driver down to 60 Egyptian Pounds for the whole day (earlier this year). Add on entry etc, would be around $40 all up. But as you say $100 is cheap still!
My advice – stop thinking $NZ or NZ rates

Here are some more rates for you
– Boat for an hour $E 25 plus 5 “backsish” (how does one spell that?) tip for the captain – but if they take TWO captains, you only pay one! (another wee trick)
- Horse and cart – anywhere form $E 5 to $E 10 for a short ride, $20 will get 30 min ride.
- Camels in Cairo (around the pyramids) – $E30 (not $US 250!!!).

Oh, there is NO such thing as a government store (paper, or anything else).
By all means pay more if you want, but not disproportionate.
When I was there I would negotiate down a good rate then tip well (so the driver got $E100 from me coz he gave us great tips and even waited while we had dinner at the end).

Btw .. the signs that say “do not walk on the mountain” are allowed to be ignored, walking over from the Valley of the Kings to Hatshepsut is truly awesome. We got told abotu this from the taxi driver, and even checked it with the local police (in the Valley of the Kings). He closed the door and say “Dont tell you I said it was ok .. but that sign is just for the Americans so they dont sue us!”

The shadows are a detail that can be cloned out of the picture quite easily.
