There are 9-11 statutory holidays per year. Nine are guaranteed. Two (Waitangi and Anzac) are only taken if they fall on a week day.

This is a minor liberalisation, which will allow each local Council to decide whether or not shops are allowed to open on Easter Sunday.

I find it fucking terrifying that some deadbeat local councilor will decide on a whim whether I can earn a living on ANY particular day, superstitious holiday or not.

Hey Monty - I wish more Catholics thought like that. I don't have a problem with Catholics sitting at home on those days thinking I'm going to go to hell for doing otherwise, it's just when they try to stop me there's an issue!

I think that third party collectors are a better method of fundraising for charities than other methods. At least with third party collectors the charity involved is pretty much guaranteed a return. If they want to raise funds with other methods they could be spending bucketloads of cash on TV adds and run the risk of actually losing money.

There have already been seven failed attempts in the last thirteen years to liberalise Easter Sunday trading, and here we go again.

I'd suggest a far better alternative to Todd McClay's Bill would be to make Easter Sunday a public holiday so that employees who are required to work that day at least get a day in lieu to spend with their families.

Easter Trading is interesting. As a Catholic I would always avoid going shopping on Good Friday / Easter Sunday (and throw Christmas into the mix too) , as I observe and appreciate the religious significance of these days. I also accept that others in our society treat these days as a holiday (and they have every right to do so) and if they want to go shopping then they can. My main concern would be that staff have the option whether or not to work. We should not deprive a Muslim or atheist of earning a few extra bucks on a day that has no significance to them if they so wish.

At the end of the day the retailers will not open if there is no demand and they cannot make any money (who would want to go shopping on Christmas day for example) - So the liberal part of me says open if you want - I will not be your customer - but my choice in life should not impact you your choice.

Oh god!

I don't know if I can stand the selfish attitude of the 24/7 shoppers and coffee drinkers more than once a year.

[DPF: Again you can already get coffee on Easter Sunday. Lots of places are open]

"but finding out less than half gets to the charity". I think most charities would be happy with half. Whenever I'm rung up at tea time I ask how much goes to the charity, if the caller starts stuttering I hang up. I give directly to the charity rather then feeding the leeches.
