2009 Kiwiblog Awards
Yes it is time for the annual Kiwiblog Awards. The categories are:
- MP of the Year
- Labour MP of the Year
- National MP of the Year
- Minor Party MP of the Year
- Press Gallery Journalist of the Year
- Public Servant of the Year
Make your nominations below, and then I’ll announce the finalists and run a poll in each category. These are all positive awards – for the best person in each category.
2008 winners are not eligible to be nominees for 2009. Here are the 2008 and 2007 winners for each category.

Labour MP of the Year – Phil Tyford – for being royally fucked over twice (maybe Trevor for his bike ride – the best thing any labour MP did all year)
National MP of the Year – Tony Ryall – for making big inroads into sorting out the health sector
Minor Party MP of the Year Rodney Hide – again for work on Auckland (or Sue Bradford for quitting)

1. MP of the Year – John Boscowen for keeping to principles in the face of National quisling leadership
2. Labour MP of the Year – Chris Carter for reminding us why Labour is dangerous near taxpayers’ money
3. National MP of the Year – Noone since none are willing to stand up to Nick Smith and John Key re climate change foolishness
4. Minor Party MP of the Year – John Boscowen
5. Press Gallery Journalist of the Year – Ian Wishart for doing investigative journalism, especially on ETS and climate change

National MP of the Year – Simon William English — not the trougher the media made him out to be; steadiness and good grace while under sometimes-abusive fire.
Minor Party MP of the Year – Heather Roy — she should be in National.
Press Gallery Journalist of the Year – Jane Clifton
Public Servant of the Year – Dame Margaret Bazley. Her report on legal aid might have been short of facts, but it’s fair to say that for a septuagenarian she can still deliver a hefty punch.

1. MP of the Year – Gerry Brownlee – good debater, doesn’t back down, is the go-to guy for unfashionable issues like mining.
2. Labour MP of the Year – Phil Goff – yes he blundered a bit, but also held the govt to account for all the stupid things it did, like buying the Maori Party’s support for a stupid ETS.
3. National MP of the Year – Gerry Brownlee.
4. Minor Party MP of the Year – Roger Douglas – VSM Bill could make a positive difference to tens of thousands of students’ lives.
5. Press Gallery Journalist of the Year – Fran O’Sullivan. Espiner, Clifton etc are eternally negative fence-sitters, anxious to avoid ever praising a particular party, merely arrogantly criticising all and sundry.
6. Public Servant of the Year – Don Brash – his resilience and politeness in the face of outrageous personal attacks is commendable. Always keeps his cool. And his taskforce report was excellent – criticisms that it was politically untenable were somewhat unfair – e.g. he avoided advocating flat tax, or capital gains. But people chose to ignore these things.

1. Simon Power – dismantling the justice system and rebuilding it piece by wonderful piece.
2. Phil Goff – he’s done more for National than any politician since Cullen.
3. Lockwood Smith, with an honourable mention to Judith Collins and Tony Ryall. Oh and Westie.
4. Tariana Turia – has operated behidn the scenes and is just getting on with helping run the country. Other politicians should take note.
5. Fran O’Sullivan. Daylight second.
6. Paul Henry – “that is a moustache on a lady”. Prepared to say what we’re thinking.
