Justice Minister Simon Power announced yesterday that the Government will make a raft of changes to child abuse laws, including a new offence of “failing to protect”.
It will make adults criminally liable if they do not intervene or tell the authorities that someone else in the house is abusing or neglecting a child or other “vulnerable” person, such as the elderly.
In some cases it could be difficult to prove, but it makes a strong statement and will hopefully “encourage” more family and community responsibility.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said he “still” smelled sulfur after President Obama made a keynote speech at the Copenhagen climate conference Friday, accusing the American president of carrying the same satanic scent that Chavez believes followed Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush.
At least Chavez speaks his mind unlike like the meaningless piffle emanating from the mouth of our glorious leader John Key as he spends money we don’t have to for science on a non issue regarding “Agricultural Emissions”
Theer goes Tony Abbott’s chances of ever being Aussie PM.
BIBLE classes should be compulsory so children have a fundamental understanding of Christianity on leaving school, federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says.
“While the reality of climate change is not in doubt, I have to be honest, as the world watches us today, I think our ability to take collective action is in doubt right now and it hangs in the balance,” he said. “I believe we can act boldly, and decisively, in the face of a common threat. That is why I have come here today. Not to talk, but to act.”
1. The climate has, does and will change, and there I no “collective action” humans can change this fact.
2. The reality is there’s significant doubt of the extent, if any, of humans impact of any part of the climate equation.
3. Why does he talk of ‘boldness’, ‘decisiveness’ when the measurable success of those brave actions will be in 2050… long after these ‘leaders’ have left office or are themselves being carbon recycled 6-foot under?
4. It is only egos and world government aspirations that ‘hang in the balance’
5. Does The Unpopular One know that his vacuous 2050 offer will be asking Americans to return their 2050 carbon emissions to the same per capita ratio at 1875? It’s not going to happen. Ever.
From the BBC:
“Responding to the news, Greenpeace UK executive director John Sauven expressed disappointment.
“It seems there are too few politicians in this world capable of looking beyond the horizon of their own narrow self-interest, let alone caring much for the millions of people who are facing down the threat of climate change,” he said.
“It is now evident that beating global warming will require a radically different model of politics than the one on display here in Copenhagen.”"
Clear evidence of the totalitarian agenda being pursued by Greenpeace, if more evidence was necessary.
They don’t achieve their narrow political agenda so the rest of the world is wrong. A very bad sign of their authoritarian anti-democratic stance.
Why do people still support this dreadful organisation without looking behind its false and showy green shop front?
Why does the BBC always give them air time?
BIBLE classes should be compulsory so children have a fundamental understanding of Christianity on leaving school, federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says.
And so they should. Our history and culture are part of a Christian heritage. Even if children aren’t going to be particularly religious they should know what the Bible says. It should be a part of the curriculum as much as Shakespeare. Passages from the Bible are referenced often in everyday life, not just by the religious but by anyone wishing to make a particular point and it is seen as ignorance not to know what someone is talking about.
Whilst here in NZ, a sludgy populace trudges onward without a thought to any kind of break out from the current stifling Progressive political paradigm. The old adage “voters get the government they deserve” has never been truer.

For me, Shakespeare was boring, and the Bible was just as boring. Both written in language that didn’t gel and about times I didn’t empathise with. Neither should be compulsory.
An Auckland Anglican church decided last night to take down its controversial Christmas billboard after an elderly woman slashed it with a knife – the third attack in two days.
Mann Made Global Warming Is True!
I suppose I am one of the last to notice this play on words, but I did enjoy this reference to Professor “Hockey-Stick” Mann.
The harshest remark: “This week has been truly historic. It has marked the beginning of the landslide that is collapsing the whole AGW imposture. The pseudo-science of global warming is a global laughing stock and Copenhagen is a farce. In the warmist camp the Main Man is a railway engineer with huge investments in the carbon industry. That says it all. The world’s boiler being heroically damped down by the Fat Controller. Al Gore, occupant of the only private house that can be seen from space, so huge is its energy consumption, wanted to charge punters $1,200 to be photographed with him at Copenhagen. There is a man who is really worried about the planet’s future.”
Translation: “Listen, if you don’t believe all this AGW crap, know that behind closed doors we all bid for as little involvement in this circus as we could get away with (not having the balls to walk away). If you do believe the AGW lies (odd, but some still do…) then be comforted by the publicised notion that I wanted to do more, but was held back by my more skeptical peers.”
More evidence that the West has gone mad: http://eureferendum.blogspot.com/2009/12/controlling-money.html
… and that the astute developing world is running circles around the stupid lefty western governments, who couldn’t run a micturition escalation in a fermented beverages plant, let alone a bath.
“If there were not $45trillion of Western citizens’ money at stake, this would be the funniest moment in world history. What a bunch of buffoons. Not since Neville Chamberlain tugged a Claridge’s luncheon bill from his pocket and flourished it on the steps of the aircraft that brought him back from Munich has a worthless scrap of paper been so audaciously hyped. There was one good moment at Copenhagen, though: some seriously professional truncheon work by Danish Plod on the smellies. Otherwise, this event is strictly for Hans Christian Andersen.”
I’m sick of godbothering (the pluses and minuses) and global bloody warming.
Answer me this.
What is it about bagpipes?
Every official function I’ve watched over the last few years has had either a lone piper or a full pipe band as part of it.
I’ve just watched a group of graduating students walk across Christchurch from the Arts Centre to the Town Hall.
They were of course led by a bloody piper.
Often at functions, by the time the stoneage wailing and the pipe band (stoneage screeching?) have finished there is no time for the function.
Why in this English based, multicultural society as far from Britain as anyone can get do function organisers insist on this bloody Scottish torture at every junction?
The noise defies description.
It is a well known fact that after the Royal Navy, the Royal Airforce and the “Paras” had failed to remove the Argentine forces from the Falklands in 1982 a lone piper was installed, with megaphone, on a hill overlooking Port Stanley. (13th of June, 1982 – look it up)
A great tactic.
The Paras withdrew three miles out to sea and those Argies who could not run/swim fast enough surrendered en-masse to the only Pom left on the island, a deaf gunner’s mate who was having a slash when the piper started up, and demanded earplugs.
I myself am on record as stating that far from being best when heard emanating from over the water (an oft told falsehood) bagpipes are far better when heard coming from under the water.
The only time I’ve ever found the bagpipes even partially acceptable was when a group of four young fellows started playing outside the Christchurch Cathedral last week and for a short time their caterwauling drowned out the incessant, tuneless whistling and braying of a blind lunatic who infests this area and pollutes the whole square.
So why do we get the bloody pipes all the bloody time?
Surely it is time for NZ to stand up and say enough, we want our own “music” to lead the procession.
I suggest a lone Maori guitarist strumming Ten Guitars – which should, if you think about it, take care of the stoneage wailing as well.
Tiger Wood has been dropped by Tag Heuer, Accenture and Gillette. That’s a shame, because he probably needs some timely, smoothadvice on how to restore his endorsement income streams
I saw this in the paper edition of the Herald and it really made me laugh and shake my head. A researcher from Australia reckons that Santa is too obese and is a bad role model for children.
“We need to be aware that Santa has an ability to influence people, and especially children, towards unhealthy behaviour,” they said. “Given Santa’s universal appeal, and reasoning from a population health perspective, Santa needs to affect health by only 0.1% to damage millions of lives. We propose a new image for Santa to ensure that his influence on public health is a positive one.”
Oh, give me a break! 0.1% ? That sounds like a figure plucked out of the air, to me.
Did anyone read this? It looks like the Maoris are planning to sell off bits of our country, bypassing the usual procedures and we are in risk of losing sovereignty over lands in our own country!
Criticism is mounting over a Maori trust buying up thousands of hectares of prime southern land, possibly on behalf of foreign investors.
Federated Farmers and the Green Party are crying foul over aspects of the offers, believed to total more than $150 million made for 28 farms.
Federated Farmers said yesterday it was “very nervous” about reports deposits may not have been paid, and the Greens claimed the trust might be acting as a “proxy” for foreign interests to engineer a “land grab” and avoid requirements under the Overseas Investment Act.
“The Overseas Investment Act needs to be strengthened to protect New Zealand’s sovereignty. We must ensure we pick up any attempt to use proxies to avoid the intent of the act,” Greens co-leader Russel Norman said.
The trust’s spokesman is Invercargill-based Wynn Murray, who this week declined to name the organisation or confirm rumours it was financed by Dubai interests.
But he did confirm the trust had some overseas backing.
He did not return calls yesterday.
In late November, state-owned investment business Dubai World stunned the financial world when it announced it was defaulting on payments of $83.5 billion property-fuelled debt for six months, US$10 billion ($14 billion) of which has since been paid by another Emirate, Abu Dhabi.
Federated Farmers’ rural security spokesman, David Rose, cautioned farmers to “conduct strict due diligence” before entering into any sale agreements for their farms.
“I am extremely nervous of reports that no deposits are being taken. It is pretty fundamental that a deposit be exchanged as a tangible sign of good faith,” Mr Rose said.
Mr Murray told the Otago Daily Times earlier that deposits would be paid when contracts were finalised, by late February or early March.
Mr Rose said that given Dubai, and Dubai World’s “pressing business issues” over the default, he was concerned the “supposed backer may not be prioritising the purchase of Southland farms”.
He added: “The fact that a reported deposit milestone has already been missed is further cause for alarm.”
Mr Rose urged farmers to seek legal and independent advice and to insist on taking a deposit.
Dr Norman claimed the Government should stop trying to weaken “already loose rules” covering overseas investment.
“Should overseas interests buy up large chunks of New Zealand’s primary production, we risk losing sovereignty,” he said.
Dutch Striker that won at Awapuni today;
Is that owned by the Kevin Brady that was the the very brave Auditor General?
Remeber when when he irritated that sex kitten from Mount Albert?
Any Southlanders following Kiwiblog might be able to tell us whether the Southland Times runs opinion pieces from the ACT party as it does from the Maori Party?
Incidentally in the piece on Wednesday from the Maori Party’s Rahui Katene (link below) one Krichbaum is cited for a broad definition of racism, which seems to be any society that doesn’t embrace the philosophy of multiculturalism.
Presumably this isn’t Krichbaum the SS colonel in charge of deporting Hungarian Jews that led to about 300,000 dying in concentration camps. I think it is the Methodist minister Krichbaum, leader of the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion, formerly known as the the Southeast Michigan Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
For anyone interested in Katene’s definition, here is a link to the Southland Times article:
I see that another little child has been admitted to hospital after being run over in a driveway. How many is that now?
What the hell is wrong with parents? I would not let my stupid little dog be outside if a car was coming or going down the drive. I watch him. Why don’t some parents do that with their children?
The rear vision of many of the latest vehicles, and not just SUVs, is poor. Aesthetics take precedence over safety. Most cars have blind spots for backing, though.
You can get backing video cameras. The wired ones are better than the wireless ones, which though cheaper, at least in theory could be affected by interference. They use the public frequencies shared by home computer wireless networks, garage door openers etc. The cameras’ picture on the dashboard can also be whited out if the vehicle is backing into bright sunlight. Audio devices that help in parking are of limited in use in protecting pedestrians, children or adults. The warning beeps on Japanese commercial vehicles when they are backing might be useful on cars, at least to warn older children and adults. Turning pads so vehicles can easily leave a section driving forward might also help.
But ultimately, Noodle, you are right. Drivers need to be always vigilant getting out on to the street. The way some vehicles whiz back out of driveways is a menace to passing children and adults. Every pedestrian must have waited for a car to back on to the street and then drive off without the driver having seen the waiting person on foot.
I often take our baby for a walk in her pram and I always watch out for cars reversing out of driveways. Invariably, the driver, especially if it is a male driver, blithely reverses in front of us, then sees us and says sorry. It’s just not good enough.
I always make sure our daughter, now walking and mobile, is safely inside before I reverse out to go somewhere. And I check the footpath too.
Jack5 and Luc Hansen. Fair points, but what I failed to convey is my concern that family members are crunching their own kids on their properties before they even reach the street. I commented because there is far too much of it happening.
I do not know the solution.
Some of the staff for the Eurostar were planning strike action before Christmas. Turns out the trains themselves decided to go on strike and beat the scheming Unionists to the punch.

It’s not being paranoid; it’s just being safe.

Jack5 and Luc Hansen. Fair points, but what I failed to convey is my concern that family members are crunching their own kids on their properties before they even reach the street. I commented because there is far too much of it happening.
I do not know the solution.

Noodle
It’s just education
That means govt spending
It’s only about kids so it won’t happen.

Some of the staff for the Eurostar were planning strike action before Christmas. Turns out the trains themselves decided to go on strike and beat the scheming Unionists to the punch.
