Its the 5 year anniversary of Dimebag Darrell’s death. To those that don’t know who he is – he was basically the guitar player of a generation (rock/metal).
My buddy also got shot by the same guy (the Kat) but survived.
Take a moment from your life an crank some “Cowboys from Hell” RIP DIMEBAG!
On December 8, 2004, while performing with Damageplan at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio, Abbott was shot onstage by a deranged fan. Abbott was shot five times, including once in the head, killing him instantly. Damageplan’s drum technician, John “Kat” Brooks, and tour manager, Chris Paluska, were injured. The killer fired a total of fifteen shots, taking the time to reload once and remaining silent throughout the shooting. To avoid being injured or killed himself, Abbott’s brother and bandmate, Vinnie Paul, was taken to the bar/kitchen on the other side of the club. Jeff “Mayhem” Thompson, the band’s head of security, was also killed in the incident while engaging in hand-to-hand combat with the killer. Alrosa Villa employee Erin Halk was killed after charging the killer after running out of bullets, expecting the killer to reload more slowly than he actually did. Audience member Nathan Bray was killed while trying to perform CPR on Dimebag and Mayhem.[15].
Brooks scuffled with the killer onstage but was overpowered and taken hostage in a headlock position. Brooks was shot several times (once in the right hand, his right leg, and his right side) while attempting to get the gun away from the killer. Five police officers came in the front entrance, led by Officer Rick Crum, and moved toward the stage. Officer James D. Niggemeyer came in through the back door, behind the stage. The killer only saw the officers in front of the stage; he never saw Officer Niggemeyer. Niggemeyer armed with a 12 gauge Remington 870 shotgun approached the killer from the opposite side of the stage, to avoid hitting the hostage Niggemeyer fired a single shot striking the killer in the face. the killer was found to have 35 rounds of ammunition remaining. Nurse and audience member Mindy Reece, 28, went to the aid of Abbott. She and another fan administered CPR until paramedics arrived, but were unable to revive him.
In a three-way Generic Ballot test, the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds Democrats attracting 36% of the vote. The Tea Party candidate picks up 23%, and Republicans finish third at 18%. Another 22% are undecided.
Democrats 36%
Tea Party 23%
Republicans 18%
Not Sure 22%
Among voters not affiliated with either major party, the Tea Party comes out on top.
For this survey, the respondents were asked to assume that the Tea Party movement organized as a new political party.
Its 12.58 and I’m first to comment today…………..so what should I say?
Uuuummmmm………………….
Now what is it that’s happening today????
Pearl Harbour Memorial day yesterday – very significant event.
Now isn’t there something that those bloody Danes are up to? Arrogant bastards, sucking up to a heap of bullshitters around the world that CO2 is going to kill us.
Now I wonder what all the plants are gonna do when we suck all the CO2 out of the atmosphere?
A Newspoll survey, published in The Australian yesterday, showed the Liberal vote jumping four points to 34 per cent on primary votes after after self described Conservative Tony Abbot became leader last week.
Seesm like predictions of a collapse in Liberal Party support because of their opposition to Climate Change issues was somewhat premature.
Pity the NZ Nationals are so far out of touch with public opinion, and as usual, paralytically in lockstep with the nutbar left on the issue.
Wherefore the real opposition?
Not amongst the propaganda braying donkeys of National that is for sure.
They’re the left’s best buddies, as they have always wanted to be.
I watched with tsunami-like incredulity last night as TVOne had a reporter telling us that when (not if or maybe) sea levels rose because of global warming, then much of Nelson was going under.
I might be wrong, since I am not a scientist, but I thought that global temperatures had to rise 40degC before enough ice could be melted to raise the global sea level by one metre.
Yes? No? Maybe?
But there was no questioning of any assumptions at all. OK, she is a reporter and not a scientist, and that makes things harder.
Our newspapers and electronic media plough on with being unquestioning transmission vessels of the Copenhagen propaganda. It’s as if ‘Climategate’ never happened. They steadfastly ignore what has been revealed to be a concerted effort to suppress dissenting views and challenges to their ’science’.
I think DPF does ESP or something – second time recently he has opened GD just when I have posted in the previous one. So I have reposted here, where it is more timely.
New Zealand’s so-called “clean and green” reputation is disappearing faster than the climate changer deniers credibility.
Hot on the heels of the incredibly cruel, and incredibly damaging to our image, factory farming proposal in the Mckenzie Basin is the news that no New Zealand newspaper joined in the other 56 newpapers throughout the world in a joint editorial encouraging the Copenhagen Conference to man up and make the necessary commitments to reduce emissions worldwide.
But the sight of the US delegate to the conference, however, emphatically slapping down the skeptics and the deniers was welcome and timely. As the world finally moves into full emissions reduction mode (after a nearly a decade of US denial under the ignorant cowboy caricature), this cabal will shrink into complete irrelevance.
However, if the leaders do not commit to a strong and genuine programme, I am picking that within two years the situation will be so obviously dire that it will become an international crime to build more coal-fired power stations, and later, a crime just to burn coal. Other fossil fuels will face a similar fate, to be used sparingly while we race around in sexy and quiet electric cars.
On a lighter note, it seems Tiger’s lovely wife has dumped him. At last, a women who is just not going to put on a brave but shamed face. A woman who stakes out a firm position that marriage vows are binding, not just a disposable indulgence. Go Elin!
“They’re the left’s best buddies, as they have always wanted to be.”
They are indeed.
Few National supporters have the courage to speak up to criticise Key. On the contrary, his lackeys and sycophants are all over the place praising his “vision” and “leadership”.
You have to conclude today’s National Party is infested with Quislings, liars, and dimwits.
Great article by Janet Albrechston in the Australian. A real journalist, not one of the weak dishonest shills for big government propganda that prevail at the NZ Herald.
Check her counter to the hysteria on sea level rises.
This is the hoax of the century readers- perpetrated by government grant obsessed scientific charlatans, power obsessed socialist politicians and a despicable craven and cowardly news media that in NZ, is fully controlled by the Progressives.
Our politicians have betrayed us. Weak craven cowards like Nick Smith posture as our saviours and then prostrate themselves at the feet of our enemy.
The people must rise against the corrupt and self serving coalition of media liars, academic frauds and political cowards.
Its the 5 year anniversary of Dimebag Darrell’s death. To those that don’t know who he is – he was basically the guitar player of a generation (rock/metal).
Shit, when I got pissed off at a Pogues concert in Sydney when that pisshead lead singer of theirs came on stage so drunk he couldn’t stand up, sing or even talk, all I did was get my money back. That sounded like some concert, dime.
Prime Minister John Key says police should not prosecute Maori Party MP Hone Harawira for riding a motorcycle without a helmet on Parliament’s forecourt … [Harawira's initial response to the accusation was "pretty much unrepeatable'' according to TVNZ]
What is the next law John Key that we don’t need to be too concerned about? [or is Key just hoping Honewira will do it again - and come off?]
New topic for a minute if I may, to wind up the lefties…
Could the behaviour that made John Key a top currency trader be behind his political choices? If so, can he be a predictable leader?
Could defending Harawira and defying opinion on anti-smacking legislation satisfy a craving for risk?
Currency and other futures and option trading with extremely high stakes is up there with the thrills enjoyed by parachute base jumpers, special forces soldiers, and Reinhold Messner-type mountaineers.
If John Key’s political road follows his risk appetite NZ, but especially National, could be in for some interesting political times. One characteristic of successful futures-options-currency-commodity traders is the ability to cut losses quickly and move on without fretting about setbacks. This suggests that when Key feels it’s time to go, he will very quickly step out of politics, more quickly and neatly than most politicians can do this. And there will be no looking back.
In the meantime, his risk appetite suggests more brinkmanship with tiny parties, controversial MPs, and unpopular issues. Key needs the challenge. Similarly with the long hours and availability to the MSM, and the continual interaction with the public, his new market. Key will never be dull.
One of the genetic factors that drive such traders and other thrill seekers seems to be the way their brains handle dopamine and the amount available to them. For an interesting take on this see the following link:
It’s about time youth offending was taken seriously. This story sounds like a sick joke. but it is true.
The cops are saying they cannot do a thing, yet on the other they are saying residents should report these crimes. No sane person would waste an hour filling out crime reports knowing full well that the cops cannot do a thing. As the cops say, short of murder or manslaughter 13 year olds can break any law they wish. I suppose the only comforting thought is that these kids will very likely end up imprisoned when they are older.
Papamoa residents feel victimised after teens smashed a bridge and tagged walls in Topaz Reserve
Residents in a Papamoa street feel victimised by 13 and 14-year-old boys wrecking havoc and causing hundreds of dollars worth of damage in their neighbourhood.
One of five Emerald Pl residents, who did not wish to be named for fear of retaliation, said the trouble began in February when a rock was thrown through a neighbour’s window, subsequently escalating to include tagging, personal threats, theft, vandalism and intimidation.
He said police had been contacted at least twice but could not charge the people alleged to be the main offenders, because of their age.
Children have also been seen tagging a truck parked on the grass verge and a caravan in a driveway, allegedly returning to admire their handiwork and threatening to burn the resident’s house down.
“They told me how great my caravan looked with their tag on it,” the resident said.
The same group has also been seen ripping up community diaries, after removing them from residents’ letterboxes, and scattering the pages in Topaz Reserve.
During the latest incident, the group was seen smashing the palings on a wooden footbridge in a council reserve, causing hundreds of dollars worth of
damage.
The head of Papamoa police, Senior Sergeant Mark Pakes, said dealing with the young offenders was an uphill battle. “The truth is, these kids have no fear of the law, because it can’t touch them.” He said often the teens were returned home to their caregivers but would soon be back out in the neighbourhood.
“There’s not a lot we can do except pick up the pieces when they go out again.”
Papamoa Police youth aid officer Mike McKenzie was not aware of all the incidents mentioned by the residents and stressed the need for people to call police as soon as an incident occurred.
“We need to be involved from day one,” he said.
Mr McKenzie said while a 13-year-old could not be charged with anything other than murder or manslaughter, there were other options and all the information was required in order to build a case.
He was working closely with the family of one of the 13-year-old boys.
Trouble has also hit Te Akau ki Papamoa School, which backs on to Topaz Reserve, with a 13-year-old boy issued with a trespass notice for tagging and disorderly behaviour on the school grounds. Two younger boys also owned up to smashing windows at the school.
The school’s principal, Bruce Jepsen, said all three children, who were not students at the school, had completed work on the grounds as payment for the damage.
Mount Maunganui College deputy principal Ady van der Beek said the group of teens upsetting Emerald Pl residents had been the topic of a regular forum involving schools,
youth aid and community representatives.
He would not comment on the children’s behaviour during school hours or whether they were currently suspended.
Jack5 at 1:31 pm: Could the behaviour that made John Key a top currency trader be behind his political choices?
I doubt it. To me he seems to just call things as he sees them, and doesn’t care if those used to traditional political-speak try and read too much into it. Most of his comments seem like reasonable conclusions to make on the topics. He’s just not PC.
I bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with seed. What a beauty of A bird feeder it was, as I filled it Lovingly with seed. Within a Week we had hundreds of birds Taking advantage of the Continuous flow of free and easily accessible food. But then the birds started Building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, And next to the barbecue. Then came the poop. It was Everywhere: on the patio tile, The chairs, the table.. Everywhere! Then some of the birds turned mean. They would Dive bomb me and try to Peck me even though I had Fed them out of my own Pocket. And others birds were Boisterous and loud. They Sat on the feeder and Squawked and screamed at All hours of the day and night and demanded that I fill it When it got low on food. After a while, I couldn’t even sit on my own back porch anymore. So I took down the Bird feeder and in three days the birds were gone. I cleaned up their mess and took down the many nests they had built all over the patio.
Soon, the back yard was like It used to be …. Quiet, serene….
And no-one demanding their Rights to a free meal.
*United Nations climate chief and head of American delegation attack climate sceptics and defend science behind global warming.
*110 heads of state and government, including US President Barack Obama, now preparing to attend conference finale next week.
*European Union says it wants stronger commitments from the US and China to cut CO2 before raising its own ambitions.
*South Africa is final big developing country to announce a climate target.
*Danish Prime Minister apologises to delegates for lack of Little Mermaid figurine in their conference kits.
What a clusterfuck. Although it’s quite amusing that they’re on the defensive & back-peddling so early on in the programme.
Lofty, what sort of birds were you after? I don’t think it was so much ‘rights’ as ‘I don’t see any fucking cats so i should probably get what I can NOW’.
Angus – I am sure there will be more hilarity from Copenhagen. Especially the bits where the rest of the Third World sticks their hands out for our wealth.
But Lofty what about the little birdies ENTITLEMENT, you great big bully and a tease to boot. Those lovely dedicated souls at the RSPCA will be round to force you to reinstate the feeder, PHILISTINE!!!!!!! Dont you understand the basic fact of welfare??? AAGH PHILISTINE PHILISTINE, BIRD HATER AND WRECKER.
“Remind me, how is Key different from Klark again?”
I never had any time for Labour or the overbearing, at times dictatorial Clark, but you have to admit there are substantial differences of style between these two.
Clark appeared decisive and firm; Key has the spine of an eel and grins most of the time.
Clark looked in control of her Cabinet; Key seems aloof and let his ministers get run amok, e.g., Nick Smith.
Clark spoke with a misguided confidence; Key mumbles and makes little sense in his statements.
Clark was a control freak; Key is laziness personified.
Current sea level rise has occurred at a mean rate of 1.8 mm per year for the past century
and more recently at rates estimated near 2.8 ± 0.4 to 3.1 ± 0.7 mm per year (1993-2003).
Oh, funny thing, Janet Albrechtsen is a right-wing Australian opinion columnist, social commentator and conservative pundit. Not a scientist.
” Not only that free speech is still allowed (only just I admit) ”
Well said Lofty. The challenge we all face is to reverse the victories over free speech that the left have won during the last few decades. They have won these victories mainly by restricting the political argument to their own paradigm.
The left have succeeded in keeping certain issues off the table, and we must put them back.
While we have frittered away our energies on the global warming myth, homosexual rights, feminism, socialism, multiculturalism, racism and a hundred other trendy diversions, more important issues such as individual liberty, private property rights, and the right to keep the fruits of ones labour have been sidelined.
As they must be if the leftist political model is to progress.
What we must do is talk about the things the left do not want to talk about. Discuss the issues they shut their eyes, ears and minds to.
This simple measure drives them into an impotent frenzy. As one can easily observe from the contributions they make so frequently on Kiwiblog.
While we have frittered away our energies on …., homosexual rights, feminism, socialism, multiculturalism, racism and a hundred other trendy diversions, more important issues such as individual liberty…… have been sidelined.
I presume you mean the individual liberty of all those that aren’t hetero, female, socialist, or of a different culture or race etc to you and one or two others?
Surely you can’t be that ironic without it being deliberate.
“Oh, funny thing, Janet Albrechtsen is a right-wing Australian opinion columnist,”
The courageous Janet Albrechtsen writes without fear or favour, unlike the snivelling traitors to the trade of journalism that flock to the NZ mainstream media, and I would back her views over a thousand of your corrupt and grant driven left wing so called scientists and academics and their yellow power driven political masters.
lofty – it wasn’t meant to be funny. They will be demanding our wealth. After all, the leaders of those Third World shitholes need an extra shopping trip or two to Harrods for their wives each year.
You read it as you see it phil.. and you are of course free to express your view (s)
But had they formed LAQC’s, claimed allowances, & gotta couple of rental nests. They would not have needed my handout, in fact they would probably have buggered off and built an eyrie with a view, employed lots of other birdies and lived happily ever after, safe in the knowledge that their wealth accumulation had assisted others in their climb up the ladder of success.
“Surely you can’t be that ironic without it being deliberate.”
The fact you think it is an example of irony only demonstrates your typically blinkered leftist perspective. Those issues were all fake issues, and designed to distract us while you chipped away at our overall freedoms.
Brian I know it was not meant to be funny, it is a rort of gargantuan proportions, I still think it is as funny as a quick kick to the nuts. (bloody painful)
Men, our long twilight struggle with the opposite sex is over. Our victory is total.
Can you believe the way things used to be? Remember when our fathers and grandfathers would drag themselves to mind-numbing jobs every day, having the sole responsibility for the feeding, clothing, and housing of their entire family?
And things were no easier before marriage, when men’s quest for sexual satisfaction was all too often hampered by the widespread moral code which taught women not to give out the “milk” for “free.”
Well, that state of affairs just wouldn’t do. So we men came together and did what we do best — formulate and implement a plan. First step, design the perfect world, the perfect male world. We decided such a world would consist of two things: less responsibility and more — and no-strings — sex.
Brothers, have we succeeded.
The amazing thing, really, is how easy it was, how fast the old world of obligation and responsibility dissolved. The first, crucial step, of course, was convincing women that they had it bad, that our jobs were “intellectually stimulating” and not the soul-crushing monotony that they in fact were.
It worked, and soon women were clamoring to join us on the job. It seems never to have occurred to them that we could have so easily prevented them from doing so — and yet we didn’t. We sidestepped without much fuss, actually, which had to have constituted the largest voluntary abdication of power in history. This alone should have tipped them off that something was amiss.
Page 1 of 2 Next ->
Right away, women at work began to solve our problems. First, men and women interacting more frequently inevitably led to hanky-panky, which led to the breakup of families, which led to less responsibility for us.
But that was only a start. To really fix things, we had to root out that old bourgeoisie mentality that had in previous times kept girls frustratingly modest and chaste. And what better way to do that than to convince women that the most reckless elements of our sexuality — the promiscuity — were in fact the correct behaviors, which had to be imitated in order for them to be “liberated”?
Amazingly, they bought that, too.
Unfortunately, our sister selves are less suited to such behavior, which can cause painful and lasting tears in the feminine soul. But no matter — we were also able to convince them that there was no such thing as a “feminine” soul, any more than there is a “masculine” soul, and that both sexes are equally suited to all things.
(Many of you said that women would never buy this, that the accumulated history of our species speaks to the deep and abiding difference between the sexes, a difference which has benefited both sides from time immemorial. But I was sanguine about our ruse — have I not been vindicated?)
Men, “Operation Feminist Movement” has worked, and more swiftly and completely than many of you thought possible. Mere decades ago, we spent endless hours and countless dollars before marriage courting and wooing; after marriage, we shouldered the entire financial burden for our families.
Now, after marriage, women can be expected to pay for half of everything, which is to the good, because video games are expensive. But, as more and more of you are discovering, why bother with marriage at all anymore? You can stay up all night, hang with your buds all the time, secure in the knowledge that on any given night you can be sure to find a willing woman, a woman who has likely been taught, conditioned even (by other women!) to expect nothing from you in return — and that this is a good thing.
Is it any wonder that, according to recent research, women these days are “becoming less happy relative to men” across all age, income, and marital levels? No, this shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, although the unhappiness of the modern woman seems to be taking many of them by surprise. After all, don’t they “have it all”?
No — it is men who now have it all.
Congratulations, brothers. Our day is at last at hand, a day of no responsibility and easy mating access as far as the eye can see. Best of all, women are convinced that they have done this themselves, and for their own good.
Sure, there are downsides. Civilization has now entered into free fall; those masterpieces of art and science and literature, for which men have been almost exclusively responsible, have ceased to issue forth from our minds and hands — and is it any wonder? Such pyrotechnics are no longer necessary to impress women, which, really, was the only reason we bothered. High culture seems a small price to pay, though, for the loosening of morals and duties which has brought our present Sex and the City-fueled bounty.
So sit back, men, and enjoy the slide. It’s Miller time.
I am releasing this article under the Whig History clause of the Men’s Charter – no point in keeping it confidential any more, nobody is going to take it seriously anyway.

(thanks grumpyoldhori)
Pete George, regardless of the pedigree of Janet Albrechtsen, the facts from Nils-Axel Morner are hard to repudiate.
Fact number 1: During the past 2000 years, sea levels have fluctuated with 5 peaks reaching 0.6m to 1.2m above present sea level.
Fact number 2: From 1790 to 1970 sea levels were about 20cm higher than today.
Fact number 3: In the 1970s, the sea level fell by about 20cm to its present level.
Fact number 4: Sea levels have remained constant for the past 30 years “implying that there are no traces of any alarming ongoing sea level rise”.
Personally I wonder how many billions of dollars it would cost to create a pipeline to pump ice melt from the poles to drought stricken areas, thereby ameliorating sea level rise and at the same time solving world hunger. I bet it would be cheaper than a global ETS (or a war in Iraq).
GOH, very good, although I’m sure it breaks the ‘code’ to publish this where women can read it. It sure is good to be at the top of the evolutionary order, as evidenced by the fact that we can pee standing up.
“the views of the vast majority of scientists really do make more sense than Ms Albrechtsen,”
You’re a complete idiot. Janet is REPORTING facts that have been established by scientists with integrity, not those “facts” selectively presented by fudging grant driven charlatans or politically motivated collectivist zealots as are favoured by the NZ mainstream media.
@ Redbaiter: Gosh, facts from your chosen few (upright, stalwart, brimming with integrity), as compared with “facts” from charlatans etc etc etc. (who, unfortunately for you, are either in an extraordinarily successful conspiracy, or are, in their majority, simply correct). I also have a friend who believes that Dan Brown reports history, but I humour him. Anway, thanks for the diversion from the mundane furrow of life.
Robert, the argument from authority carries no weight, if you read the emails, you’ll see how a small group of 10 – 12 “scientists” dominate the climate community, restricting what can be published, restricting what will be included in IPCC documents, and running a relentless PR campaign to support their narrow view. And if you want a laugh, try this link and see another “climate scientist” practicing PR and acting as a “good scientist” should : http://rogerpielkejr.blogspot.com/2009/12/climate-scientist-threatens-boycott-of.html
Where shall we put the Gulag ?
Now since we Nat and Labour voters are a bunch of Communists it does seem a pity not to practice what one person screeches about.
I fancy the Auckland Islands for all the extreme types, right wingers, hories, Greens etc etc.
I suppose the 7.62 mm answer would be just a touch extreme ? or would making an example of one or two work ?
No need for guards or supplies, they will find food of some sort and it is a long way to swim
Below is a typically cowardly post from the craven little commie who rejoices in the name Idiot Savant, and who refuses to run a comments section on his blog. Even though he frequently comments on other blogs.
Whether you like Paul Henry or not is not the issue.
The issue if freedom of expression, and the left will use any lie, any deceit, any means they can come up with to attack those who challenge their progressive political paradigm.
This is another faudulent attempt to hobble a presenter whose only crime is that he does not fit the gutless collectivist mould the leftist bullies and control freaks approve of.
I urge all Kiwiblog readers who value the principle of freedom of expression to advise this company that they are making a mistake pandering to these cowardly anti-free speech leftist zealots, and to tell them you will not make use of the services of any company that does join the left in their attempt to muzzle Paul Henry.
Go there and tell them what you think of their arrogant attempts to stifle freedom of expression.

Sticking it to Paul Henry
Yesterday The Hand Mirror launched a campaign to target Paul Henry’s advertisers over their support for his show (and by extension, his regular abuse and denigration of anyone who isn’t a rich tanned white guy). It’s already had its first success, with adventure company FreemanX pulling their advertising. Here’s the email I received:
I wasn’t particularly impressed with the presentation of our experience nor by certain things said by Paul Henry, but suffice to say we won’t be advertising with them again.
Again I can’t comment on Paul Henry’s past comments & opinions as I simply do not watch him enough, however I would hate for FreemanX to be associated with offensive or inappropriate behavior of any kind. Our business has always been modeled off the kiwi can-do attitude, based on quality customer service.
Thank you however for bringing this to my attention & it may be a case of choosing our advertising a bit more cautiously in the future.
Hopefully they’ll be the first of many. TVNZ has shown they are not interested in curbing Henry’s antics; hopefully advertiser pressure will force them to.
The Marxists have always had it in for Henry because he draws in the viewers. Pity they don’t apply the same tactics to John Campbell. I wonder why that is.
I’m a right winger and i cant stand that geeky buck-toothed nerd henry. i just take comfort in the fact that he would have been routinely beaten up at school.
not sure why right wingers like him either. he was the biggest kiss ass in history when he used to interview Helen every Monday.
didnt he stand for parliament and lose to a tranny?
The cognitive dissonance of Redbaiter coming out on the side of free-speech for a state-funded broadcaster against private individuals, petitioning private companies, is overpowering.
Redbaiter, would you be so worried about free-speech for a state-funded progressive broadcaster, if they were being attacked by a campaign orchestrated by a right-wing shock-jock?
Redbaiter, don’t pretend you’re a friend of free-speech. You’re nothing of the sort. It’s a marriage of convenience for you.
I think I may have discovered the reason for Phool’s clinical stupidity.
A diet of chicken, fish and protein shakes might do wonders for people with brain injuries.
Akiva Cohen of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and his colleagues mimicked brain injury in mice by injecting fluid through a hole drilled in their skull.
After seven days, the brain-injured mice had much lower levels of three branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), leucine, isoleucine and valine, compared with control mice. These are found in protein-rich food and are known for their ability to build muscle.
The team then fed another set of brain-injured mice either plain water or water enriched with BCAAs. Five days later, those that had taken BCAAs had normal levels of the amino acids and performed better on a learning task.
Excitation disturbance
Cohen’s team reckon they might have figured out how the BCAAs are having this effect. In the hippocampus of a person with a brain injury, the delicate balance of neuronal excitation and inhibition is disturbed, says Cohen. The BCAAs may help restore the balance by making more neurotransmitters, he suggests.
The findings complement observations made by a group of Italian biochemists last year. Simona Viglio of the University of Pavia and colleagues found that minimally conscious patients who were given BCAAs intravenously improved in their “feeding, grooming and toileting” abilities.
“The new findings represent a substantial progression because they provide evidence, on an experimental basis, of the beneficial effects of BCAAs,” says Viglio.
Cohen’s group will now look at the effects of BCAAs on other areas of the brain, and are hoping to start human trials of amino acid-based treatments soon.
“In the near future, BCAA administration in humans could become a routine treatment,” says Viglio.

…..would you be so worried about free-speech for a state-funded progressive broadcaster, if they were being attacked by a campaign orchestrated by a right-wing shock-jock?
Not a precise comparison, but as a champion of free speech and someone who rather enjoyed listening to Mara Liasson on NPR for all those years in Chicago, I think the following is very worrying since it is happening in the US.
I would not say he is a right wing hero, as you pointed out he is way to soft on our Prime Ministers.
What he is though is the best entertainer on our television, he is funny, terribly un PC and not afraid to point out the blindingly obvious.
Years ago I used to watch a guy called Johnny Vaughan on a programme called the Big Breakfast which screened on channel four in the UK, Paul Henry is the closest thing we have to him IMHO.
The only time I have seen Paul Henry on morning TV he interviewed a medium as if he was on a promise, it was totally unprofessional and a credibility cruncher.
Hmm. Sunny day here in Auckland. The Stars and Stripes are flying from the upper balcony, barbecue’s going fine – and the wife and I have been listening all day to 93XRT streaming on iTunes. It’s the Indie Beat session right now.
All I need is the Cubs in the background.
….Oh God….. I can’t believe I wrote that last sentence.
FreemanX in no way, shape, of form wrote anyone that email. I don’t know what he’s said to annoy people, I don’t get a chance to see the show as I’m typically working. I don’t have a view for or against because I don’t know what they’re talking about however I have spoken to our solicitor regarding the ‘Idiot’ who made up an email and misrepresented it as fact. A former MP, along with three other people, is likely to stand with trial in August next year on charges of fraud involving nearly $2 million.
The four have name suppression, which was continued today in Auckland District Court. They will appear for another callover in March before their trial, which is scheduled for August.
The Serious Fraud Office alleges the four were involved in a $1.8m swindle of Auckland sports clubs, a children’s charity and various companies set up around gaming machines.
The three men and one woman faced 17 charges, including fraud and obstructing the course of justice.

Falafulufisi: I think it may be worthwhile taking stock of the current discussion and where it has been.
-It began when you put up a badly written paper, which you claimed was being unfairly criticised. I showed the authors made elementary mistakes which invalidated the claims in its abstract. Eventually after much prose on scientific history (as opposed to science), you admit that their second law assumption was moronic. I went on to rubbish their one remaining quantitative section.
-Since then you have thrown up objections which display a poor understanding of the science, for example you complain about not taking scattering into account when you, yourself go on to state that it only needs to be considered as wavelength tends to molecule size. Something which clearly does not hold for the IR region and below we are interested in.
-You also suggest that Stefan Boltzmann won’t hold for molecules because they rotate, when in fact that is irrelevant (actually it will serve to spread the adsorbance spectra out by providing roto-vibrational transitions, and therefore offer a greater approximation to a continuum)
-When pushed for evidence, you then repeatedly reach for “progress in physics”, which might generously be described as “notorious for poor peer review”. It is not a trustworthy source of information.
-Finally we have the wall of text attack which either consists of the aforementioned irrelvant historical review, or a series of rapid fire irrelevant questions, punctuated with “do you understand?”
Speaking of the Stefan Boltzmann law, I think you will find the original derivation by boltzmann holds when sections of the EM spectra are missing and even in the case when the EM is monochromatic. Planck’s derivation requires a complete continuum, however boltzmann’s does not – which is probably why the T^4 proportionality finds such wide experimental agreement. Sure you need an experimentally determined prefactor, but as I said the emisivity is experimentally well known.
You also bring up one case where models deviate from recorded data (1940-1960). However you seem to be insinuating that this is to do with the use of Stefan Boltzmann – there is no proof of this. Indeed were it Stefan Boltzmann you’d most likely see a far more general disagreement than over one brief time period. It is far more likely that it is something else at fault.
We can use these theories without much care about what reality that underpins them , since they are useful and give reasonably good agreements between theory and observations. We can’t apply the same mentality to climate models, since there is a huge economic effect that will result in just doing that.
Finally I am rather disturbed with your statement that because of the “economics”, we must hold science to a different standard. Economic considerations are irrelevant to the science, which ultimately can only be judged on (a) predictive ability and (b) the relative complexity of theories. The economic considerations are a matter for policy makers, not the scientists. Science doesn’t change just because it means a toss up between econmic hardship or a game of roulette for the policy makers.
Paradigm said… Sure you need an experimentally determined prefactor, but as I said the emisivity is experimentally well known.
I have said previously that observations are very deceptive that’s why you need a theory to explain the observation, and also predict some yet unobserved phenomena. No one has ever come up with a good satisfactory explanation of the double-slit-experiment yet, although the theory is unprecedented in the accuracy of its predictions.
Paradigm said… You also bring up one case where models deviate from recorded data (1940-1960).
There is no proof, but since universality is not observed in climate models, then one can be suspicious that either its foundations are wrong/false (history has shown that this is to be the case) or its formulations are correct, but inapplicable physical parameters are being used, such as Stefan-Boltzman parameters, etc.
Yep, that one of the issue that Schwartz et al paper on climate feedback sensitivity highlighted in 2007, that the current IPCC treats this parameter as a constant, which they think that the parameter is not after all a constant but a time-varying parameter, ie, a function of time. It can switch from being a positive feedback to being a negative feedback at different time. They Schwartz claimed that the range of values for feedback sensitivity can explained that temperature dip.
Physics is about consistency, not something that works here but failed there, which is something that you don’t seem to understand. You keep bringing up that if it satisfactorily works enough in this domain then that’s all we need. Particle physics standard model seemed to work perfectly (as according to your logic), but now it is being questioned of why can’t it explain the weaknesses of gravity in comparison to other 3 fundamental forces. Should we care about finding out the truth of the WHYs or should we just simply stick with what we currently have because it works well in the domain that we’re interested in? The answer is no. String theorists think that they can solve that problem by proposing multi-dimensional universe and so forth. The claim of AGW was mainly confirmed by statistical tests and physics isn’t statistics.
Paradigm said… Finally I am rather disturbed with your statement that because of the “economics”, we must hold science to a different standard.
No, it is relevant because it affects our lifes. The debate whether quantum mechanics is correct or string theory is correct, is largely irrelevant to the daily life of the general public , except perhaps when researchers are asking for taxpayer dollars. Imagine, if the claim of QM and Multiverse are to be politicized, then we will see this same debate on AGW being applied in there too. Some scientists will perhaps (hypothetically) claimed that other universes may have superior beings that have the potential to cross into our universe and do damage.
They may advocate to taxed everyone heavily on earth to build some intergalactic defensive system in order to protect us from such hypothetical potential invasion. If you don’t believe me, then try do some readings on various quantum mechanic’s interpretations on the net and you see what I mean. These top-notch theorists are not saying that there will something out there that have the potential to cross into our universe to do damage, but they’re sort of talking indirectly about possibility. What’s the common ground theme here? Yep, mathematics has taken over the nature of physical reality. Mathematics is now the reality. Aren’t we seeing this from IPCC oracles, these days ? Yes we do. Computer numerical modelings are now the substitute for physical reality. The issue is the politicization of science and this has got everything to do with questioning the mentality that we applied to science. Do you imagine that had the AGW science debate been left to its own, that there would be any uproar today that we’re currently seeing everywhere? The answer is NO. No one would give a toss if we’re causing the warming or not. Now, I hope that you can see that simple logic right there.

Without the internet we would never have known.

Go Elin!

They are indeed.
Few National supporters have the courage to speak up to criticise Key. On the contrary, his lackeys and sycophants are all over the place praising his “vision” and “leadership”.
You have to conclude today’s National Party is infested with Quislings, liars, and dimwits.

December 8th, 2009 at 1:31 pm

Take your craven Progressive propaganda somewhere else loser-
From the Albrechston article linked above-
Fact number 1: During the past 2000 years, sea levels have fluctuated with 5 peaks reaching 0.6m to 1.2m above present sea level.

I doubt it. To me he seems to just call things as he sees them, and doesn’t care if those used to traditional political-speak try and read too much into it. Most of his comments seem like reasonable conclusions to make on the topics. He’s just not PC.

Repost from yesterdays GD..but timely.

Copenhagen Highlights Day 1:

Both are equally bad for New Zealand.

Current sea level rise has occurred at a mean rate of 1.8 mm per year for the past century

Confidential Memo
To: All Men
Re: Operation “Feminist Movement”
Page 1 of 2 Next ->

Does this sound like anyone?
December 8th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
December 8th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
@ Pete George, yes,…yes it does.. it sounds remarkably like Wendell Phillips…uncanny aint it!
December 8th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
GOH, very good, although I’m sure it breaks the ‘code’ to publish this where women can read it. It sure is good to be at the top of the evolutionary order, as evidenced by the fact that we can pee standing up.
December 8th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
“the views of the vast majority of scientists really do make more sense than Ms Albrechtsen,”
You’re a complete idiot. Janet is REPORTING facts that have been established by scientists with integrity, not those “facts” selectively presented by fudging grant driven charlatans or politically motivated collectivist zealots as are favoured by the NZ mainstream media.
December 8th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
@ Redbaiter: Gosh, facts from your chosen few (upright, stalwart, brimming with integrity), as compared with “facts” from charlatans etc etc etc. (who, unfortunately for you, are either in an extraordinarily successful conspiracy, or are, in their majority, simply correct). I also have a friend who believes that Dan Brown reports history, but I humour him. Anway, thanks for the diversion from the mundane furrow of life.
December 8th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
Pete, you’re looking in a mirror !

The company has a feed back page here-
http://www.freemanx.co.nz/feedback.cfm

Thanks for the laugh, though.

Not a precise comparison, but as a champion of free speech and someone who rather enjoyed listening to Mara Liasson on NPR for all those years in Chicago, I think the following is very worrying since it is happening in the US.
The summoning of Mara Liasson

I would not say he is a right wing hero, as you pointed out he is way to soft on our Prime Ministers.
What he is though is the best entertainer on our television, he is funny, terribly un PC and not afraid to point out the blindingly obvious.
Years ago I used to watch a guy called Johnny Vaughan on a programme called the Big Breakfast which screened on channel four in the UK, Paul Henry is the closest thing we have to him IMHO.
December 8th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
The only time I have seen Paul Henry on morning TV he interviewed a medium as if he was on a promise, it was totally unprofessional and a credibility cruncher.
December 8th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
Paul Henry is our version of Austin Powers.
He’s a funny prick, but some of his stuff is cringeworthy.

Former MP to stand trial on fraud
3:34 PM Tuesday Dec 8, 2009
A former MP, along with three other people, is likely to stand with trial in August next year on charges of fraud involving nearly $2 million.
The four have name suppression, which was continued today in Auckland District Court. They will appear for another callover in March before their trial, which is scheduled for August.
The Serious Fraud Office alleges the four were involved in a $1.8m swindle of Auckland sports clubs, a children’s charity and various companies set up around gaming machines.
The three men and one woman faced 17 charges, including fraud and obstructing the course of justice.

Hmm. A debate about the worthiness of Paul Henry as a a broadcaster?
December 8th, 2009 at 11:19 pm

I have said previously that observations are very deceptive that’s why you need a theory to explain the observation, and also predict some yet unobserved phenomena. No one has ever come up with a good satisfactory explanation of the double-slit-experiment yet, although the theory is unprecedented in the accuracy of its predictions.
Paradigm said…
You also bring up one case where models deviate from recorded data (1940-1960).
Paradigm said…
Finally I am rather disturbed with your statement that because of the “economics”, we must hold science to a different standard.
