tell ya what, i reckon he (john key) might have had a bit of ‘jesus juice’ before going live. does anyone else think he had a wee bit too much to drink?

that aside, and while i’m not his biggest fan and i didn’t vote for him, it’s true that his style of leadership is the very antithesis of clark’s brand of shock and awe. good on him for letting loose and taking the piss out of himself.

the standard’s “coverage” of key’s appearance on the edge is – perhaps unsurprisingly – unsympathetic. whoever wrote it doesn’t lack a sense of humour so much as an understanding of the media. in quieter news weeks (like, i dunno, immediately before xmas), when there’s bugger-all else going on, key’s rendition of a popular christmas song does pass as news.

I’ve heard people say that Clark could come across well in private settings, but I don’t think she was ever a bundle of laughs.

I think it’s good to see Key like this, there to enjoy himself and do what he can without any obvious agendas or political straightjackets. He just ahs to find a way to pull English along with him. Has to happen in 2010.

the interviews clearly show show why the left hate him .. he was funny, made fun of himself etc etc .. everything Helen was not.
Someone on Redalert last week (I have been internet free for 5 days) slagged him off for his slurring Kiwi accent. I suggested he has $50mil reasons for not giving a shit about how he speaks.

I think Phil Goff just gave the type of interview that the Standard prefer, to the type of station that John Key was interviewed on.

I didn’t hear the interview, but I heard the aftermath:

Announcer 2: (Snoring noises)

Announcer 1: What did Phil Goff want for Christmas again?
Announcer 2: He said he wanted, um,…World peace, equality for the rich and the poor… [drifts off]
Announcer 1: A trip to Hawaii? For John Key to get stung by a jellyfish?
Announcer 2: I wish he’d said something like that. I’m not sure if Phil Goff should be Prime Minister or a boy’s brigade leader.
Announcer 1: Yes, but we thank him for coming in anyway…

Key is very entertaining in that clip, a very personable guy. Regardless of any other attributes he will attract voters just for being a nice guy. He certainly seems very relaxed, perhaps he fell into a cauldron of prozac when he was little.

Anyway it is clear that lprent and his hobgoblins can’t rise above partisan politics even at Christmas (did any of them get invited to any of the parties DPF?) which is sad, as I’m sure even they have family to spend Christmas with, and their seething resentment can’t do much for the Christmas spirit.

I’m hoping to avoid any kind of politics over Christmas. I’m also hoping for roast lamb with mint sauce and new potatoes.

Big Bruv: That is hilarious – they are such sour idiots. I mean for Gods sake it is Xmas time and it is The Edge and they expect a cross-examination on monetary policy or something. They really need to get outdoors over summer and relax.

It has been said before but can be repeated; John Key was successful in his career, he displays no hunger for power for its own sake; he just wants to make a contribution. And if he is not wanted so be it; he clearly has another fulfilling life he can return to. The left have tried to fit him with an ideology without success. The MSM have criticised him for not having perfect speech. He is popular (not ‘populist’ as the left would have it) because he listens (flip flops are about listening and being prepared to change your point of view) and because his persona, as shown in the clips, is that of an ordinary, caring Kiwi. So he is a rich prick, so what; most Kiwis aspire to a comfortable lifestyle where they have freedom of choice.

big bruv – big ups to you for confessing a grudging admiration for Key. He really IS unlike any PM we have had before (in my lifetime, at least), in that he seems completely unaffected by the role. He’s almost impossible to pidgeon-hole, and I think that pisses his opponents off more than anything else.

On a personal note, hope things improve for you before Christmas – it’s a helluva time to have to be dealing with crap.
