AC/DC
January 29th, 2010 at 6:33 am by David FarrarAt around 6 pm last night I got offered a free ticket to the AC/DC concert. I paused to consider my options. Either I could be responsible and finish the report I was working on, and also write my weekly NBR column (due inĀ by 7 am Friday) or I could go to the concert.
I pause and convince myself that I can get home by midnight and write my column then, and dive into my bedroom to hunt out a black t-shirt!
Never has Thorndon had so many bogans pass through it! I was not surprised to see Paula Bennett entering the grounds!
The UNITE union was outside trying to get people to sign their petition for the minimum wage to go to $15 an hour. One of them recognised me and asked me to sign. My response was that they should tell Matt McCarten to stop campaigning for measures that will destroy his own members jobs!
The crowd warms up to Shihad.
And then the main event! They rocked even though Angus Young stripping off reminded me a bit of a scene from the Love Actually movie
A concert goer who has found a cheap bed for the night!
We left around midnight. Of course the sensible thing at this stage would have been to head home and write my column. But when people say that magic word – Hummingbird – I can never resist. So down to Courtney Place we went.
I finally got home at 2 am. Set my alarm clock for 4 am, and luckily did not sleep through it. Two hours later at 6 am, I file my NBR column with an hour to spare!

These guys, now mainstream, middle-aged and focused on their pensions of course, are still a wonder. Hilarious on stage too.
I had the pleasure of seeing them at Athletic Park about 1992 and still laugh at the sight of the on-stage cannon, never mind the music.
In comparison to the somnabulent Dire Straits (‘dire’ indeed) I’d seen just a week or so before, AC/DC were an example of hard work, experience, quality and professionalism at work.
Probably the best show I’ve ever seen, Hawkwind (1973) included.

Bogan Farrar – the mind boggles!
But how DO you score all these freebies? Please share your secret!

I’ve never seen so many bogans in this city. Woodstock, lace, bad tats, and black clothing for miles. Was quite a site yesterday in the suit on the way home. Talk about contrast…

DPF if you could ‘bottle’ your stamina you would make a fortune.

Well done DPF, corporate box too huh, you never said that in your blog post.”Paused to consider your options” my arse! And you got less sleep than me ( typical!) and went home earlier ( untypical). Oh, and I2, he scores these tickets because he is a Nat. ( heh) .

You will never make it as a Civil Servant in charge of shuffling papers.
You are far too productive.
As for minimum wage, best that Unite check out the UK minimum wage levels. With the xchange rate as it is, it makes the whole issue even more controversial. They just can’t leave it alone, can they?

DPF – like you, I was in town and scored a freebie from schmoozing client…very glad I accepted, what a concert!
Great spectacle from what must be one of the hardest working old-school rock bands still around. Angus Young was excellent and the band was very tight, and while the vocalist had to work hard to keep up it didn’t detract – they still sounded great. The flashing red horns throughout the crowd looked great too!
The Checks were quite good too, in a very tough early opening slot. Shihad were okay, obviously stoked to be opening for their heroes in front of a 35,000 hometown crowd, but the singer’s excessive swearing sounded a bit contrived and…lame. In contrast, I can’t recall the AC/DC singer swearing at all.
PS the ears are still ringing…

Did you ask how much the Wellington ratepayers coughed up to make sure this ‘event’ was held in town?
You could say your ticket was subsidized twice !

It was an awesome spectacle! We were right up the very front and i have to say, ACDC managed to pull off another EPIC show!
I was there in 91, and now again in 2010. Awesome.
Was good to unleash my inner bogan too

I bought a ticket for 91 at Athletic Park, but sold it to a mate (can’t remember why)
He got beaten up by a Mongrel Mob member and can’t remember a thing from the night.
