Friday Photo 1 Jan Add this story to Scoopit!.

This is almost a New Year’s photo from a couple of years ago. It took though until the 3rd to get the combination of light and cloud necessary for this glow.

The shot is pre-dawn and taken at Waiake on the Hauraki Gulf.

Waiake

Here’s hoping that this decade will be better than the last :)

Cheers Chthoniid. More than hope, it’s up to all of us to try and make the next decade better.

Tis the time of the “Indigo” child – sent to bring stable leadership to the world,
and, as we move into the age of Aquarius, a chance to change direction towards a more peaceful
environment with a greater understanding amongst people.

The photo, Chthoniid, shows the vibrancy and energy that is waiting to be harnessed, if only we stop and take time to
recognise it is up to us to make it happen.

    There is a pre-dawn?

    There is actually a sunrise?

I always thought it was a myth designed to explain sunset.

    Great photograph by the way.

Thanks- the Hauraki Gulf can be a magical place in the right conditions.

Photography can mean rather more early starts to the day :( – but the compensation of seeing the sunrise is often worth it.

As always, the photo is ‘clickable’ and will take you to the larger image.

Its already better, one because of you beaut photo’s and two because we have got rid of the nasty one and have leader that is so much nicer. Even if is still a bit lefty.
I see we are entering the year of the water carrier. That has to be good for Australia and it seems that we water carriers are already doing good things in many places there.

All we need now is to get a greater understanding of why personal responsibility and freedom are the two of the most desired characteristics in person.

    Happy New year.
Time to find time to take photo’s too.

That was worth getting up early for, Chthoniid. Great pic.

    Beautiful!
Did you need a longer shutter speed?

  12. Chthoniid (1,709) Says:

Jack5- yes, I had to get up on 4 consecutive mornings though just to get this shot. Although when you are standing alone on a beach (with a thermos of hot coffee), watching the sunrise and experiencing something so grand and real, you’ve got to wonder why so many people stay up late to watch TV and miss out on chances like this. NZ gets some very nice sunrises.

Fletch- yes, I’d have to look the shutter speed up, but this is a tripod based shot. The sun is still below the horizon, but its low-angled rays are reflecting off the diffuse clouds and bouncing down on to the calm bay. It’s this filtering of wave-lengths by the low-angled rays through the atmosphere that gives the light the warm red/orange colours.

The problem is you need both the clouds and the sea to be exactly right. Too many clouds (like the ones over Rangitoto) and they bolock the light, not reflect it. If the sea isn’t calm, you don’t get that bouncing effect and glow to the water.

Yep, you have to wonder. There is some great natural “entertainment”. Except in the coldest months we leave our bedroom curtains open all the time. Lying in bed we have one 120″ screen to the east and sunrise, and another to the west and sunset, and often watch as the palettes and patterns creep, often to a birdsong soundtrack.
