big bruv – no tears shed here. Rufus Marsh was one of a “select” band of New Zealanders to have killed on more than one occasion. At least, in his case, “life” meant life.

Ah! Those halcyon days of work – how I miss them. Now I’m retired I have to make my own mind up what to do.
Today is a tad murky so might just opt for a coffee for starters – have to make my own though as the nearest
barista worth their beans is a 30 minute car ride away. I know – it is my fault for choosing to stay in the boonies.
By the way, can anyone tell me what day of the week it is?!

This particular post has got me hot under the collar Murray – there’s an underlying nastiness and envy to it, and given that the poster “Eddie” is ALLEGEDLY someone high enough up in Labour’s organisation that they ran a by-election campaign, it suggests that that’s Labour’s view on it as well.

As for the hypocrites-sky is blue comment – couldn’t agree more 🙂

Um, could it be because Taumata is poor and Maori, whereas Myers is extremely wealthy and white?

I think Hone Harawira has a point here. Rich white mofos like Myers get rewarded for exploiting the poor, especially poor Maori. When Maori choose to do it for themselves, as this guy Taumata did, and substitute a drug other than that approved by rich white mofos for their own financial benefit – well, they get a stretch inside.

Racism, colonialism, and elitism are still very much alive in the public policy of this country.

A quarter of the young offenders had had head injuries while young, while nearly 60 per cent of the mothers said they had used medicines, alcohol and cigarettes during their pregnancy.

Labour could campaign against the nats on the basis that they are in coalition with a maori supremicist.

“Rich Maori mofos like Harawira, Sharple, most maori achademics etc get rewarded for exploiting the poor, especially poor Maori.”

When it comes down to it, for maori to improve their living standards maoris need to change. They need to stop feeling entitled to any special treatment and need to remove the negative aspects of their culture. Maori have some really really bad customs (I’m not saying they don’t have good ones) like standing by family even when they do abhorrent things (Kahuis come to mind here, as well as Harawira standing behind his violent cousins) etc. I remember at highschool in the late 90’s having a powhiri, all polynesians and maoris were told to sit up the front for this.

Another interesting story, a feared double murderer has been found dead in prison.

The prosecutors belief about this man was: “Crown prosecutor Jim Larsen, who prosecuted Marsh for both killings, always said he expected to prosecute Marsh for murder again before he died or retired.”

This, and the recent escapades of Maka Renata show that the criteria for indefinite sentences need to be loosened to protect the public. Give every murderer a life sentence, but allow time before parole eligibility to be the thing that judges can decide, that way monsters like Marsh and Renata can be kept in prison.

CharlieBrown – I have already expressed my complete lack of remorse for Rufus Marsh’s death. Unfortunately, Maka Renata is a different kettle of fish. He was given a finite sentence, and was kept in prison for as long as was legally possible.. Given that it is almost inevitable that he will reoffend, we can only hope that next time around he is sentenced to preventative detention, which would enable the State to keep hm in prison for the rest of his life.

Whilst I have been critical of the Parole Board many times, they got it right with Rufus Marsh who was sentenced to “life” in 1987, at a time when many lifers were out after 7 years. That he died in prison is a small victory for “the system”.

Redbaiter, John Key is not uninformed. I am sure Key will have benign statements after what Hone just said. Whew, 35 convictions and this asshole is proud of it. The reason?? Speculation has it that carbon trading will be 3 trillion while oil trading is now 1.5 trillion. I don’t think John Key cares at all about New Zealand and is “bed” with this racist and maori party because of John Key’s future.. It seems this would be the reason for his flip flop on the ETS. He could have discregarded it with Acts vote. After all, what does John Key do best? Usually when you take away the rhetoric and follow the money trail, that is where the reason lies. Principle?? That’s only something the papers write about and the uninformed public eat up.

Inventory2 – Do you think Preventative detention should be used more often and available for lesser offenses. I understand that in both cases, these people were given the maximum available, however the tools to keep these people locked up until they can be safely released just wasn’t there.

I do believe that some people can genuinely be rehabilitated and should be elegible for parole, but for animals like marsh an renata, the danger they pose indicates they are unlikely to be safe to be released.

Also, a legal framework where a life sentence is given and parole being the flexible factor should allow for offenders who break parole being sent straight back to prison.

When Hone’s comments first hit the press I emailed both Turiana Turia and Pita Sharples about them. Never received a reply.

I emailed Pita Sharples and Hone Harawira back in 2007. Hone said (in Parliament!) something along these lines:

That he would not sit and wait for the police to act
That he would challenge the rule of law when he felt it was necessary
That he would oppose the rule of law if he felt it was necessary
That he would support other people who did so

I mentioned that I thought our Members of Parliament were sworn to uphold the law, and how did this sit with that? Surprise surprise, no reply. (In light of his comments that he’s been to court on 35 charges and is now in Parliament, he presumably didn’t see any contradiction).

It seems like the Maori Party feel they can say what they like, do what they like, and if you ask them to front up and explain themselves, they don’t bother if you’re not Maori. No accountability to us the tax-payer.

I don’t get too involved in politics, but man this thug makes my blood boil. Has anyone who isn’t Maori ever received a reply from these clowns?

re Hone .. oh dear, i saw part of his speech on the telly and thought that he not changed. he will be gone from the maori party this year.
The nats biggest issue will be the foreshore and sea bed issue with the super city close behind. It won’t be tax reform, health, education etc.

20 years ago we had the likes of Ken Mair , Syd Jackson , Annette Sykes , Tariana Turia , Pita Sharples , John Harawira et al
ranting and raving about maori issues..they were maori radicals as we labelled them. Now a few are in Parliament. Apart from Harawira..the others have learnt to keep their mouths shut and heads down. Behind the scenes they are quietly going about their business and implementing their racist policies all backed by National and JK.

I voted National to stop this shit. It hasnt stopped and its only getting worse under Key. Who do we vote for 2011 ?

Not at all, Starboard. Sure ACT will only ever help National become a government, but if there were twice as many ACT MPs then they’d have a lot more say in the coalition. With their current numbers they’ve been bought off with the super-city and few other things (the 2025 report etc).

Have a look at their policies and see if you think National would be better or worse if they adopted more of them:

Ummm are you going to ask the same of the wingnuts doing the same kinds of things about Helens marriage to Peter. Basically if the wankers of the right wish to get their jollies slavering over that, then looking at JKs holidays is absolutely civilised by comparison.

If you weren’t one of the wankers doing it, I’d be very surprised. I can look it up if you wish. But in the end it makes the wankers around the fundie churches and sniggering adolescently in the sewers of the right look like hypocrites to then get upset when the left wants to look at the performance of JK. At least that is relevant to the job.

with both the Nats & the Reds hugging the centre line, I thought a vote for ACT would enable some more right leaning policies to be implemented, didn’t count on JK inviting the Maori’s in for a love fest, still not understand the reasoning behind that, unless it’s the old adage of keepin friends close & your enemies closer.
The fact that Rodder’s a prat & Roger’s a dinosaur makes me think ACT will be going the way of NZ First

MPs swear the oath of allegiance, which says: “I, [name], swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Her heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God.”

(“according to law”, I presume, means the laws that govern succession)

WASHINGTON, Jan 10 (Reuters) – The Republican Party chief called on Senator Harry Reid on Sunday to step down as Senate majority leader over racial comments about President Barack Obama, while Democrats tried to put the issue behind them.

Reid, a key figure in pushing Obama’s agenda through Congress, apologized to the president on Saturday over remarks published in a new book calling Obama a “light-skinned” black man “with no Negro dialect unless he wanted to have one.”

Both Obama and Reid are Democrats.

Steele said Reid used “anachronistic language,” adding, “It harkens back to the 1950s and 60s, and it confirms to me a mind-set that’s out of step with where America is today.”

Steele was asked about his use in a recent television appearance of the words “honest injun,” seen as disparaging toward American Indians. Asked if his own words were a racial slur, Steele said, “Well, if it is, I apologize for it. … I wasn’t intending to say a racial slur at all.”

Been there whan the compan my wife worked for moved us to Auckland on the promise they would give me a job. So I quit mine and they reneged. WINZ called her rich (being more than $25,000) and I got nothing. Fun times.

Given that one of the roles of the House of Representatives is to make new laws and update old laws, I would have expected they would then at least be expected to uphold them!

We expect everyone (including politicians) to obey the laws.

It’s the job of the justice system to uphold the laws. If politicians swore to uphold them, they would be unable to repeal any laws that were no longer needed!

Regarding Hone Harawira, I would like someone, like the National Maori Affairs Minister to ‘run him down to ground’ for once as to what he actually wants. He says we ‘mofos’ are guilty of raping their land for 150 years, then cites the Seabed/Foreshore issue as a present day continuance. So what is being done with that? It’s to be changed. When? So someone give him a date. What in fact then does he expect the average New Zealand mofo to do about it? It’s a Government matter, is it not, until that date and they do something with the issue. What’s next . . . ? Why do we never get a full complaint list from Harawira, or his like, which can be acted on, or slotted in to whoever’s hands who are dealing with it? Otherwise it is just vague complaint and discontent aimed at mofos in general and not the buggers we have voted into power to deal with this stuff.

So that is my point. Why doesn’t someone representing us mofos [Government] run him to ground for a finite wish list, so it is all on the table for once. They say we have been collectively screwing them for 150 years or so, so they have had plenty of time to work out what is wrong and what they want.

For a start the amount of tax I pay! It is not so much the amount of tax I pay, it is the shit services etc I get for the amount of tax I pay…. Middle to upper NZ’ers are well fucked in this country. The harder you work, the more you get screwed by high tax….

I for one am not saying I cant get ahead because it is our countries fault, it is our countries fault that we allow so many people to have a say whom are sucking on the tit….

Harawira was right about too many of the so called iwi leadership following the corporate model too closely.
Amusing how one well known iwi so called leadership ducked when I asked if they were making any effort to find urban Maori who were of their iwi but did not know.

Hone may be an arsehole, but he does not reserve his anger only for the Pakeha, too many Maori are too comfortable in their corporate lifestyle which they did not earn, but was given to them out of taxes paid by both Pakeha and Maori.

Agree entirely with your comments. I am in same situation as you both with a slight twist in that I am a full-time Uni student (completing a degree left hanging many years ago – family circumstances and all that) who, despite an inbuilt antipathy towards student loans bit the bullet and went back to uni because I can’t get work (I’m a ‘Boomer’ and apparently ‘too old’), figuring that ‘making paper’ could be useful – eventually. (It sure beats sitting at home going stir crazy with frustration).

No part-time summer work of course (too many ‘young’ students), while Winz is no help since my wife works full-time and although she earns only a few dollars above the U/B-limit it’s no go. Not complaining, since our God supplies (seriously), but sometimes one does wonder ‘what if . . . ‘ as I am sure others (and yourselves ) do as well. Thankfully uni semester 1 starts soon (well, in 2 months LOL) and some money will be forthcoming (albeit not much, but it will help) with the irony of that statement being that, as it is covered under my student loan, I’m actually going to be paying for it myself – The government giveth, the government taketh away.

(And sadly the government (well, Winze at least) doesn’t seem to be aware that we (the ‘kept-ones’ ) actually exist which is somewhat unfortunate)

And as for the U/B statistics!! Total fabrications!! (‘lies’ and ‘statistics’ are only variations on falsehoods) There are thousands of us out there (‘kept’ husbands?), so the reality is not exactly as portrayed. It does however sound good at news conferences.

So hang-in there gents – you are not alone, and always remember the very old, very unofficial subset to the RAF and RNZAF motto -‘Per Ardua Ad Adastra. This is: ‘Nix illegitimi carborundum. . .’ (I’ll leave it to you to translate. . .), and if nothing else, it will at least raise a smile.
