David you make a very good point about government debt:

While that relates to the UK, it is also relevant here, and we do hear little about what’s happening with government debt. Does anyone know what it was at the time of the last election here, what it is now, and whether our current government has a similar policy to link the upper bound of borrowing to national economic output?

A case that comes straight to mind is the poor Scottish woman who was killed in I think Rotorua by a fellow who was only 14 or 15 at the time and as I recall he”s what some folk would call a tangata fenua.

DPF, this salary cap is semi-enforced in The Netherlands. Too lazy to lookup the details but the term is “Balkenende norm” and I believe it is that you can’t earn more than the PM (Balkenende).

If you want to see how governments operate go to yesterdays Timesonline. The Labour government has set up a quango costing STG9million a year with 40 staff The chairman gets STG185,000 a year. But is cant operate because the government hasnt yet set the legal parameters around its operations It isnolved in Infrastructure Planning and Approval but duplicates other existing agencies.

the Conservatives say they will abolish it if elected and the government says it cant enact the enabling legislation before the end of the current Parliament.

This is a typcial piece of BS governance that the Poms and we have to suffer under. Dumb arse pollies and civil servants with no governance nous or skills

Indeed DPF – and Goff is of course bound by the convention of collective Cabinet responsiblity for decisions made whilst he was a member of the Labour Cabinet. If he now thinks that the more-than-25% pay rises given to departmental CEO’s was a mistake, he should be honest enough to say so.

Perhaps instead of focusing on “ordinary New Zealanders” this year, the Labour Party should make its 2010 goal to re-write recent history
