Winston’s legacy at NBR

January 22nd, 2010 at 10:00 am by David Farrar

My first Dispatch from St Johnnysburg is at NBR 24/7. An extract:

So why are things so good between the Obama administration and the Key administration? Is it the rapport between Obama and Key? Is it the wooing of Hillary Clinton by Murray McCully?

Nope. While both may be factors, the majority of the credit goes to Winston Peters.

My column this year is now subscriber content, so you need to be a subscriber to access it.

David – Under no circumstances should it ever be acknowledged that one of the most corrupt politicians of the past decade (as well as Philip Field) ever did anything correctly.

I would put it down more tot he good work done by MFAT.

Not a subscriber, but I beg to differ. The credit doesn’t belong to Winston Peters, but to our race horses. The old man used to brag that one of the reasons the anti-nuclear legislation didn’t bite the trade front as hard as it could have, was that he had a rapport with the US ambassador (Monroe I think) about race horses. Honestly, the best way to impress Hillary when she eventually does get here is to give her a race horse.

” So why are things so good between the Obama administration and the Key administration? ”

Because the Key administration are a bunch of unaware uninformed drongoes who think that having the PM of NZ appear on the TV show of a gap toothed sleazy narcissistic progressive moron in some fawing witless skit is the epitome of diplomatic achievement.

” The majority of the credit goes to Winston Peters ”

Sorry. Whoever is responsible for it, I see no credit in cuddling up to such as Obama and the Clintons.

I apologise for how rude this is to ask, but entirely out of curiosity I can’t resist – have they increased your remuneration in exchange for allowing the content to be paywalled? No problem if you don’t wish to answer that.

[DPF: No they did not, but nor did I ask. They pay me to write material for them - how they display that, and to who, is up to them.]

Subscriber only content about Winston Peters – ya gotta laugh.

    Market value – 1 cent.

They appear to be charging more, however.

I’m going to assume that anything that starts out praising Peters is going to end in a punchline, but I’m not paying any money to find out

DPF is a Wellington insider, very adept at flying with the political wind of the time. But even that is no excuse to praise Winston Peters, one of the most venal and vile characters NZ politics has ever produced.

Cam Slater is correct: DPF has been entirely assimilated and swallowed by the establishment.

Wow, red, that sounds just like The Standard. Are you sure you are not secretly one of their contributers?

    Didn’t you vote for Key/Hide?

  12. Rex Widerstrom (4,965) Says:

It is difficult for a writer to negotiate a decent copyright arrangement on his or her work these days, but I do try to figure every possible revenue stream a client could derive from my work and either:

    1. Accept payment based on what they say they’re going to do with it, but with clauses in the contract that increase my remuneration if they then use it in a fashion that increases their revenue (rather like an actor who insists on getting paid for re-runs) or
    2. Significantly increase my rate if they wish to purchase the complete rights.

I believe this is becoming reasonably common amongst freelancers. So before Whale, Kate and the other conspirators drum DPF from the VRWC we have to ask: Has Barry just (figuratively) rogered him, in which case his epaulettes are up for a tearing off (yes, I know about the uniforms) or has he negotiated such a large wad of folding stuff for his insights that he can afford not to care (in which case he must surely be up for an award of some kind at the next neeting)?

Rex the issue WO et al have with DPF here is not his remumeration arrangements, but rather any sort of praise for Winnie.

I don’t see what the problem is with praising someone if it’s deserved. I’ve never been a fan of WP, and particularly don’t like some of what he did. But at times he was obviously good at doing some things. What’s so bad about that?

Bloody disgrace. David is now out of the VRWC until he can write something that proves his worth. The most putrid piece of snake-grovelling writing I have read in a long time. It is clear now that DPF has been captured by the pink alien ship of repeaters, drugged and inserted with a non-removable chip in his head.

I am a paid subscriber to NBR, anymore of this garbage and I will consider non-renewal of the subscription.

    Pete

    Both.

You haven’t even read the article, so pretty hard to have a discussion regarding.

NZ’s relationship with the US has thawed in the main because every other country round the world seems to hate the US so much that it has had to be nicer to placid states as NZ.

All this idiot has ever done for our overseas image is make us appear racist, intolerant and stupid, just like the majority of people in Christchurch

Great so we are praising a lying scumbag for doing his job, after all this is what we, the taxpayer, forked out our money for him to do.
Hell I thought we paid the pain in the arse to hold the country to ransom as a kingmaker, and to get his greedy little fingers into some very questionable dealings over scampi fishing.

Fair enough. Thanks for answering! I’ve always been slightly curious what the arrangement between you and the NBR was – not because I think anything fishy is going on, just because it’s an interesting business arrangement given your respective readerships.
