2010 Cork Count
February 11th, 2010 at 11:51 am by David FarrarAnother year gone already!
The consumption pattern has been:
- 2003 – 325 bottles (0% stelvins)
- 2004 – 393 bottles (0% stelvins)
- 2005 – 392 bottles (3.8% stelvins)
- 2006 – 456 bottles (17.7% stelvins)
- 2007 – 496 bottles (21.9% stelvins)
- 2008 – 512 bottles (46.9% stelvins)
- 2009 – 517 bottles (76.3% stelvins)
I hasten to add these are not all mine, but from a group of us!
People are welcome to guess (by 18 Feb) the total number of stoppers, and also the percentage that are stelvins.

How many were last night?? Except it’s me that’s confused.
“Guessing” 2009 is a bit too easy.
2010 seems to be off to a big start, is the guessing for how many so far in the glass or how many for all of 2010?

The years are from Feb 9 to February 9. So only need to guess the 2010 year which is for 10 Feb 2009 to 9 Feb 2010.

Wow. I’m surprised you’re still upright. With the propensity of screw caps, I think you’re getting close to two bottles a day! I venture you’re nudging 600.
[DPF: The drinking is between around 10 people]

Presumably you are referring to all screw caps as “stelvins” (which is of course a brand name, now owned by Amcor). Statistically some at least are likely to be made by Guala and other manufacturers.

So DPF, care to venture how much of a retirement nest-egg have you and your’s pissed away?
A rough calculation, not adjusted for inflation or purchasing power, brings the total expense to slightly over $63,000 based on the numbers you’ve provided there. Nice work!
I suspect this also won’t include bottles or glasses drunk on-premises, where they generally don’t let you keep the stopper…
[DPF: I've been saving for my retirement since I was 14. And we drink decent wine so hopefully far more than $63,000]

Must have been a rough calculation, or expensive taste in wine.

Hmm, a tall narrow bar next to a short fat one — spot the professional pollster!

Well my guess (as you will remember you were married for about 12 hours) is slightly less than last year.
I’m going with 493 and 93% screw. (tops)
However, I do question the honesty behind the quantity as if there were 10 of you that is only about 1 bottle a week each, which I would think may not be correct…….

707 stoppers,
85% stelvins.

522 bottles
Vote:96% stelvins

564 bottles consumed.
Vote:543 were stelvin.

Judging by the trendline there should only be around 520 stoppers, but working on 85% stelvins the volume suggests about 654 stoppers (my guess), which is obviously way above the trendline, was 2009 an unusually warm year at the bar, perhaps an El Nino? Or perhaps the bottles are getting smaller and we need to allow for an adjustment?

622, but 82.7% stelvins

Hi there – I have joined to ask you what your experience has been of the wines. How often have you found your Stelvin wines are “Screwed” like some cork wines are “Corked” as research suggests this isa growing trend with wines under screwcap suffering from reduction?
