Backbenches Tonight

Tonight at 9 pm on TVNZ7 or live at the Backbencher.
- Grant Robertson, Labour
- Paul Quinn, National
- Russel Norman, Greens
Topics:
CUTTING THE FAT: McDonalds and Weight Watchers have joined forces to fight obesity. Is this a deal with the devil or a way to help obese people make the proper choices when eating out in the real world? Kiwis are the 2nd fattest in the world after the United States. What else are we doing to cutting obesity in New Zealand?
SNIPPING CHILD ABUSERS: David Garrett has suggested that parents found guilty of abusing their children should be offered $5,000 to be sterilised. These comments have people up in arms but what do we do about people who abuse their children? How do we stop the cycle of violence?

March 10th, 2010 at 3:34 pm
how bout we stop telling women “its ok to be fat”. its not.
they could use that domestic violence campaign as a template. “its not ok”.
have fatties saying – i never cared about my weight before. i just ate fast food all the time.
“its not OK. ever”
March 10th, 2010 at 3:57 pm
Good subjects.
Because when you eat at McDonalds you have to watch your Weight.
Is there $5000 on offer if your found guilty of abusing yourself… like Garrett… or should you just be castrated.

“Is there $5000 on offer if your found guilty of abusing yourself… like Garrett… or should you just be castrated.”
? WTF?
March 10th, 2010 at 5:23 pm
Can’t comment on Garrett’s rumoured self-abuse, but he does abuse his position, those who voted Act, anyone he believes to be below his station and common decency.
So, I guess, it would probably would be fair to extrapolate out to include him in the ‘abused by Garrett’ list.
March 10th, 2010 at 5:42 pm
“Can’t comment on Garrett’s rumoured self-abuse, but he does abuse his position, those who voted Act, anyone he believes to be below his station and common decency.”
How so? I’ve always found him to be up front, inline with ACT’s policy and pretty down to earth…..whats your evidence for thinking otherwise?
March 10th, 2010 at 6:00 pm
Well at least Garrett had the balls to air is views, many people think it, but are to scared to mention it….
I have not found the new year of Backbenches that great, I guess that because hearing the ranting Labour and Green guests is like watching paint dry……
There is still that horrible left slant that the media spin out…. I shouldnt at all be surprised!
March 10th, 2010 at 6:10 pm
Act’s other MP’s haven’t supported Garrett over his ‘sterilization’ comments and for good reason. They want to distance themselves from such nasty crap (I mean Garret, of course).
March 10th, 2010 at 6:22 pm
@RKBee 3:57 pm
I don’t think Garrett’s paunch is from eating too much or eating the wrong things. Too much piss would be my pick.
March 10th, 2010 at 6:26 pm
have the greens tried to ban alcohol yet toad?
March 10th, 2010 at 6:45 pm
“Garrett’s paunch”
Be still my heaving stomach! What a foul image Mr Toad!
Yet so apt.
March 10th, 2010 at 6:55 pm
@dime 6:26pm
No, and they never would. Nor tobacco, like Labour’s Brendon Burns and MP’s Hone Harawira seem to want to.
All the evidence suggests prohibition does not work as a drug harm minimisation policy, whatever the drug is. I favour the Portugese approach – legalise the possession of any drug as long as it is for personal use. But get tough on those who make money out of other people’s addictions.

“Act’s other MP’s haven’t supported Garrett over his ’sterilization’ comments and for good reason. They want to distance themselves from such nasty crap (I mean Garret, of course).”
Whats nasty about it?Its a good idea and sure beats robbing productive taxpayers to fund the breeding by scumbags…
March 10th, 2010 at 7:54 pm
Looking forward to Wed Wussel’s whining.
Oh wait, no I’m not. Fuck the Gweens.
March 10th, 2010 at 8:02 pm
@James 3.57pm What can’t you see that he has beat himself up.. with his sterilisation remarks… Act would love to castrate him from the party.. but they haven’t got enough balls to loose the one thats now damaged… Garrett.
You know what they say about one bad apple… or is that one loose connon for ACT.
I will give it a miss watching Backbencher Tonight at 9 pm too.. It would be like watching a live boring often childish parliament sitting after hours. You know politicians trying to be funny.. I couldn’t think of anything worse.
March 10th, 2010 at 8:15 pm
A known side effect of castration is weight gain (cf eunuchs) so we’re certainly not going to solve the obesity “crisis” by running about lopping off testicles all over the place. I wonder if the reverse is true… and that if we could work out a way to make obese women grow a pair, we’d be half way to fixing the problem?
March 10th, 2010 at 8:29 pm
Rex.. I can tell your really skinny with that comment. Does it also mean obese men have none… or is it just that they can’t see they have.
March 10th, 2010 at 8:34 pm
James asks, “Whats nasty about it? Its a good idea …”
Clearly James is not an Act MP. They at least, have enough sense to get as far away from Garrett’s poisonous comments as they can James, on the other hand, blunders blindly in, waving his bile-coloured flag, flecks of spittle flying.
March 10th, 2010 at 8:39 pm
Hurf Durf can’t make up his mind whether he’s a fan or Russel Norman’s or not. Perhaps a closet Green thing happening there, Hurfy?
Thinking of getting a few bean-sprouts going on the kitchen bench, are you? Pressure from a more enlightened boy/girl friend perhaps?
One that wears a ‘Save the Whales’ badge?
Respect, HD!
March 10th, 2010 at 8:45 pm
How about we sterilise Fat people if they don’t pull their weight ?
It would make a lie of those who have “slow metabolisms” and the ” big boned” theory
March 10th, 2010 at 8:51 pm
“Fat people who don’t pull their weight”
Are there such people?
Perhaps they are in very satisfying relationships!
March 10th, 2010 at 9:05 pm
“slow metabolisms” and the ” big boned” theory” you don’t see fat people in concentration camps…
There should be a $500 fine for standing still in New Zealand… thats our biggest problem.
March 10th, 2010 at 9:50 pm
I’ve always known the Gween scum to be mentally deficient. I didn’t think it would be so bad that they couldn’t detect sarcasm. My commisserations, billy.
March 10th, 2010 at 9:57 pm
What a SHIT Backbenches……… Seriously, the show needs to sort its act!
March 10th, 2010 at 10:33 pm
norman admitted eating endangered fish from macdonalds..on a regular basis..
chapman (almost) called rzzzzzzzzzzzobertson a ‘pansy’..(he caught himself..just in time..)
but the show does leave you with a bit of a macdonalds feeling..
a..’what was the point of all that..?’
it often seems just to be heat and noise..
a circus..
with little attempt at any elucidation..

Worse, Norman more or less admitted (didn’t deny when asked) supporting people who cause major damage to government (our) property and break the law.
He is obviously knowledgeable about a lot of things but sounds like he is making political speeches, doesn’t inspire. I kept thinking “yeah, yeah, I know that’s the party message, but what are you like as a person?” – and I never got an answer.
Quinn simply doesn’t impress.
Robertson came across well, direct, answers the question that was asked, an apparent refreshingly uninhibited expression of what he thinks. Doesn’t mean I agree with everything he said, but I felt I knew where he stands.

“Kiwis are the 2nd fattest in the world after the United States”
I’ve seen & heard this statement a few time before – frankly I think it is bullsh!t.
If it’s based on BMI figures then I know for sure it is bullsh!t
March 11th, 2010 at 10:14 am
@voice of reason
Yes, it is bullshit.
It’s not actually based on BMI however.
NZ is one of a very small group of countries that estimates its obesity rates by physically measuring some of the population.
Most countries estimate their obesity rates by self-reporting.
So, some German fattie who hasn’t seen his toes since the Berlin Wall came down, will not be counted as obese if he feels he isn’t. He won’t report that he’s obese. In NZ, Australia, the UK and the USA, we’d actually physically measure him.
There is a marked difference between the obesity rates in countries that sample, versus countries that depend on self-reporting. It’s got little to do with difference in actual obesity rates, and a lot to do with how we measure obesity.
March 11th, 2010 at 10:18 am
I don’t understand why anyone would spend any time with such scum DPF.
