“..The government drugs czar who was sacked for saying ecstasy was no worse than alcohol is developing a drink that he claims will give a similar kick to spirits but without the harmful effects.

The small liquid shot would give the same lift as a few drinks after work.

But those enjoying its benefits could then take an antidote before driving home.

There would be no hangover .. and no damage to the liver.

David Nutt, chairman of the government’s Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs until he was dismissed last year ..

.. is developing his synthetic alcohol at Imperial College London.

He says the “Nutt slammer” could be on the market by the end of 2012 if money is available for clinical trials.

It would provide all the pleasures of alcohol .. with no downsides..”

    (no more hangovers..eh..?

Earth Hour bullshit coming around again…

Once again the miserabilist anti-human anti-progress greenist wankers of Earth Hour are urging the civilised world to express shame and guilt for the progress it has made in making our world a better place to live in.

And this year, 2010, this sick campaign to throw us into darkness (literally) has TV3, Toyota, TradeMe, Powershop and MoreFM to thank for their sponsorship and support in their advertising (Herald On Sunday 14/3/10 and no doubt other media).

Do these companies have no brains? Will they jump onto any pathetic bandwagon just to gain publicity or do they really believe this nonsense? If so, they deserve to fail as businesses because they are denigrating the very technology which makes their existence possible. Idiots.

I urge you to copy this and email it to as many people as possible. Boycotting all their products and services immediately might just tell these organisations where to stick their misguided propaganda and send them the message that intelligent New Zealanders don’t appreciate being preached at.

    This stupidity has to stop.

  10. Lazybum (195) Says:

BTW, I will make sure ALL of my lights will be on.

    Damned straight they will.

Note also Toyota, with it’s seriously polluting Prius leading the way, fraudulently climbing on the “green” bandwagon.

  12. Murray (8,734) Says:

And meanwhile usage before and after earth chicken little hour is high enough to ensure that there is a net increase is usage.

  13. Dave Mann (812) Says:

Yes Lazybum I turned ALL my lights on last year and ran both my cars with their lights on too. I encouraged a couple of neighbours to do the same and we made a statement. This year I’m going to put fairy lights out too and I have printed out the text that I posted (above) and dropped it around the neighbourhood :-) Phone talkback, post comments. Talk about it at work…. lets try and light up New Zealand and shove it up the greenist idiots!

On Page C2 of the NZ Weekend Herald’s Business section is quite a good article written by Brian Gaynor about the leap former politicians make into the business world, and that for the most part, they are not successful.

They’re just kids, some as young as 12, and they’re being plucked straight from school into marriage and motherhood. They are the child brides, forced into marriage by their parents, the very people who should be protecting them.

This isn’t some tribal ritual being practised in Afghanistan, Pakistan or Africa – it’s happening in some suburbs of New Zealand.

SUNDAY talks to one teenager who became a wife and a mother aged 14. We also hear from the women who pick up the pieces when these marriages crumble.

  25. vmcrns (19) Says:

    HEWITSON: 2 – CODDINGTON: 0

When I read Deborah Coddington’s strident article about ACT in the Herald on Sunday yesterday I thought, initially, that she must have just woken from an extended nanna nap, given that the whole subject of the ACT Party conference and leadership had been well traversed nearly two weeks ago. I also wondered how the Herald editorial system worked, given that, only the day before, Michele Hewitson had published a detailed interview with Heather Roy which was fairly balanced and the first journalistic piece that actually asked her directly about the leadership coup rumours that others had simply reported from what they had heard from their ‘sources’.

Then, I remembered the piece that Hewitson had written about Coddington in the Herald in April 2005. Headed “Coddington Now a Lover, Not a Hater”, this tract included many quotable lines that could have come from a DSM V Section on ‘Coddophilia’. Here are a few selections:

On thinking she could slip away from Parliament quietly – “Because I’ve only been there one term and I’m in a small party. I suppose my naivety continues to surprise even me.”

On why she’s leaving politics – “I am just so much in love and so happy and I’m just too relaxed to give the job everything”.

On whether she feels bad about the negative publicity she brought on ACT – “No, because what could I do about it? I didn’t behave badly. The time when Act went up in the polls was when I was in the media for … He Who Shall Not Be Named”. She admits that her colleagues were “probably, sometimes, grinding their teeth when I was getting headlines and they weren’t”.

Hewitson’s 2005 article included several comments about Coddington’s public perception and, in the journalistic league table; it was Hewitson 1 – Coddington 0. I’m guessing that the latter, at this point, decided to take advice from a popular Kennedy quote she has used elsewhere.

In producing this angry, inaccurate example of schadenfreude masquerading as journalism, Coddington has only strengthened the hand of those who view her as a lightweight stringer in the twilight of her career. Should Mr Carruthers be concerned that she is now angry again? Will we soon see stories of unwanted chases across the vineyard?

Let’s compare her story to the facts. I think that The Standard has sufficiently ridiculed her opening with Hide as ACT leader in 1994 – prior to ACT actually being in Parliament. She claims that David Garrett has ‘destroyed the ACT brand’ over his sterilization comments. Whether you like or loath Garrett some will vote for that sort of stance. People don’t vote for the sort of stories that occupied the front pages for months about Coddington’s ex-husband, her real or imagined affairs or for the behaviour of Donna Awatere-Huata. Those two did more damage to ACT than any other caucus member ever.

She goes on to ask “what 21st-century liberal would vote for a party whose caucus supports a man who makes lewd remarks around the office, justifies that behaviour by saying it was okay in Tonga, then advocates bribery and sterilisation as a means to control child abuse and the population of the underclass?” The caucus did not support him – he was publicly sanctioned by Hide on every occasion.

Then, she climbs on to her philosophical soapbox to imperiously intone “Does Act stop to think that the 21st-century liberal is both an economic and a social liberal? We want low taxes and small government, but we’re not redneck, pro-smacking, tough-on-crime unforgiving mutants.” This is from the woman who was spanked by the Press Council for her racist comments about Asian crime (entitled “Asian Angst: is it time to send some back?”) in North & South magazine? The one who thought, in 2008, that it was time for ACT to become a ‘hard-assed party’ (just prior to her paragraph about spelling and other standards).

Coddington then launches into an irrational tirade against ACT Deputy Leader, Heather Roy. The same person she gave the thumbs up to in several earlier articles. This might have been prompted by the simple coincidence of Chinese astrology in that they are both (according to Wiki) born in the year of the dragon and the fight is on for alpha status. However, I can only see one dragon being peeved about the fact that the Chinese birth-signs are on a 12-year cycle. It is far more likely that, on reading Hewitson’s thoughtful article about Roy the day before, Coddington had a ‘bad trip’, her planned script for the HoS was torn up and replaced by the hastily typed loss of internal monologue we see before us. By my count, that makes it Hewitson 2 – Coddington 0.

As an example of capital ‘A’ amateur journalism, Coddington says of Roy, “Now she’s Minister of Consumer Affairs, but worse than Judith Tizard, and that’s saying something. When Roy should have spoken out on Morning Report about the effect on shoppers of the duopoly of supermarkets, we were told she preferred not to comment.” Actually, Roy gave a radio interview on this subject on the 11th of November last year. Coddington obviously only checked one link on the Radio NZ website or maybe she just ‘trusted her sources’. Roy also published a weekly diary on the subject and is, by all accounts, in the process of consolidating all 12 pieces of legislation within her portfolio, as well as simplifying consumer complaints procedures, under a programme called ‘One Law – One Door’ (for the uninitiated, that’s part of the Regulatory Reform stuff that Coddington claims to have drafted). By my read, Roy has about 10 speeches or releases on the net that any serious journo would have found before they published the sort of inaccurate bile that Coddington’s editor thought was acceptable.

But the self-righteous rambling went on to state that Roy’s conference speech was “perfidious”. This is, undoubtedly, a well-worn word in Coddington’s lexicon of self-doubt. In fact, Roy has delivered and published speeches on very similar themes to ACT conferences in 2008 and 2009, as has Hide. Her message is simple and in line with party strategy – ACT can and must sell its message to 8% or more of the voters at every election. Coddington said as much in a March 2008 article. John Armstrong agreed in February this year and it may well be his approving comments, prior to the 2010 Conference, about Roy’s 2009 speech upstaging Hide, that has prompted this media frenzy and is distracting ACT from getting on with the work that needs doing.

Coddington claimed that Roy’s speech was “illiterate, hopelessly muddled, with references to black swans and jumping jackrabbits, Roy began by quoting the founding fathers’ Declaration of Independence – “we hold these truths to be self-evident” – then went on to declare the Act Party to be self-evident.”

Illiterate? Only if you are not widely read or struggle to understand allegory, I guess. The ACT membership comes across as fairly well educated. However, if her objection is to animal metaphors, she might wish to review a couple of her own articles (‘Government put together like a camel’, ‘Skulduggery of a dungbeetle’) which were tacky, over-extended attempts at portraying an intellect that appears to cohabit, at the moment, with Elvis.

I realise that this is already way too long for a blog piece so I’ll leave it there. Coddington should just let Hide, Roy and co get on with the job that 86,000 Kiwis put them there for. As the title says; I make it Hewitson 2 – Coddington 0.

  28. Pete George (12,308) Says:

I don’t see the point Dave. Isn’t it just an opposite bandwagon you are trying to get rolling?

I’d like an earth hour every clear night, the night sky is amazing when you are away from all our light pollution. I love the secluded spot where I live, the worst aspect is a street light that no one else needs and we don’t want – we are the last ones on our street and would rather have darkness when it is dark.

No Phil, that wasn’t what I meant. I was meaning the letter or phone call from MSD about your work test. It should be coming any day now, shouldn’t it? Especially as you make no secret of the fact that you have CHOSEN not to work, even though you are able to run a “news aggregation service” from home, which suggests that you are not lacking in work skills.

Went and saw Neil Gaiman over the weekend as part of the Arts Festival here in Wellington, well worth the time (and as value for money, incredible, only $25). Due to dinner plans I didn’t have time to queue and get anything signed sadly, but it was pretty damn cool for him to read something he only wrote 10 days ago (that he had never read to anyone before, or even out loud to himself). Also pleased that he chose to read from American Gods, I love that book.

  31. Dave Mann (812) Says:

Yes Pete, I like the stars too (I live in the bush by choice) but the fact is that cities need light. Thats one of the engaging and sparkling qualities of living in a city.

Its not so much an ‘opposite banwagon’ as a genuine reply to what I and many others see as a sick anti-human movement to propagandise guilt and negate our civilisation.

  34. Grendel (469) Says:

    as i drive to and from work with the radio on and when i bother to watch TV on TV (as opposed to shows i get from the US that probably won;t get here for years) i was wondering;

if all the ads run by the government telling me:

Not to smoke, not to smoke near children, to face the facts, that cigarettes kill people
That i have a 1/8 chance of dieing every time i turn at an intersection
That if i drink and drive i am a criminal and/or will always kill everyone i know
That if i ‘take one for the team’ and drive my drunken mates around i am a legend
That i should carpool (this is a new one)
That i should not shake children
That its not ok to be a nasty male and bash women all the time
    Not to text and drive
That island women who laugh all the time need to get smear tests
That mothers are there for thier daughters and they should get vaccinated
That if other people don’t like gambling they can get it banned, and that someone elses gamling is my problem as well as theirs.

and the others i can’t remember stopped playing,

    a) how many of the TV/Radio stations would about go under or be in serious risk as their major source of advertising dries up

    b) how much money the government would save that they could use to cut back on the increasing deficit, or give back to us.

    c) how less patronising watching TV or listening to the radio would be.

  35. KiwiGreg (2,273) Says:

    @ fizzleplug I’m jealous. He’s such a great writer.

  36. PaulL (4,409) Says:

Phil, if you’re so busy looking after your kid, then you shouldn’t have time that needs to be spent sitting on your bum doing nothing. If you’re not so busy, you should have a job. Actually, you should have a job anyway, your kid is old enough to be in day care or school.

  37. Inventory2 (7,223) Says:

PaulL – Phil has been “raising a nipper” for around 15 years, if what he has previously blogged is to be believed.

But fear not; Paula’s on his trail :-)

  38. Pete George (12,308) Says:

Grendel – and what if you added to that list all the adverts pushing at us stuff we don’t need?

    - bottled water
    - junk food
    - a fourth phone
    - a third tv
    - hygeine products we are mostly better off without
    - vanity products we are mostly better off without
    - “must see” movies and shows we don’t need to see
    etc

  39. Scott (913) Says:

Grendel — I couldn’t agree more. Why is it that the government has to tell us every 10 minutes how to behave? Don’t buy cars without ABS braking, secure your ladder when getting up on the roof, make sure you are immunised to stop you from getting cancer if you’re having promiscuous sex particularly if you are a schoolgirl, the list goes on and on. And who pays for this? Ultimately it’s the taxpayer, you and I, that’s who.

If the government and its various government agencies stopped all form of advertising then I reckon we could save a lot of money. Maybe they wouldn’t have to put up GST to 15% and perhaps they could lower income-tax? No government advertising and less tax? It works for me!

  40. Komata (595) Says:

The list of areas for which mining may be considered has now been released and, predictably, the ‘usual suspects’ (Green’s, Forest and Bird) are screaming – ignoring the fact that, at least in respect of those on the Coromandel Peninsula the areas have been previously mined and explored – especially around Thames. Obviously knowledge of NZ history and awareness of the underground wealth in the area, isn’t one of their strong points

The complaints, predictable as they are of, indicate that, once again, the National Interest and the need for the NZ economy to be helped to recover, must, of course, never be allowed to get in the way of native plants and animals – or the growing and selling of ‘Coromandel Green’ – the real reason that the protestor’s react. Self-Interest always triumphs in such situations (aka ‘Peace and Love man’ – and I’ll destroy anything that wrecks my marijuana crop’)

    Curious isn’t it?

  41. Dave Mann (812) Says:

Pete, I’m not arguing with you for the sake of arguing (believe me), but I think Grendel’s point is that it is not the government’s business to use OUR money to PREACH to us and feed us social propaganda.

The advertising you list might well be annoying but, unlike state propaganda and mind control, it is all a valid way of marketing companies’ products.

  42. KiwiGreg (2,273) Says:

“and what if you added to that list all the adverts pushing at us stuff we don’t need?”

    Says you.

If you cant understand the difference between private companies spending their money versus the government spending ours I pity you,

  44. Fairfacts Media (258) Says:

I used to live in Thames in 1998 and it flooded several times that year.
It was a combination of heavy rain plus the council not clearing the drains effectively that caused the flooding.
An ounce of mining had nothing to do with it and I noted the old culprits like Denis Tegg were behind last night’s scare story on One News.

Chuck, yes, I saw the muslim child brides story on Sunday. Great to see them cover such an outrage.
So we have muslims doing this in New Zealand when they make up just 1% of the population.
Imagine what they might do should their numbers rise to 3, 5 or 5% as in many European countries.

I have blogged on this at my relaunched blog, the Fairfacts Media Show which can be found at http://www.fairfactsmedia.com .

  46. Pete George (12,308) Says:

The intention of my argument was to point out that while both commercial and government initiated advertising is acceptable both can be overdone and not good for us.

If the government did nothing about promoting health and safety there would be as many grumbles about them not doing enough. If there was a health epidemic (and there almost certainly will be some time) and the government didn’t spend any money informing the public would no one complain?

  47. Dave Mann (812) Says:

No Pete. Government initiated advertising nagging us all the time is NOT ‘good for us’. Simply put, it is the misuse of our taxes which would be better spent elsewhere. No goverment mind control is EVER an acceptable use of my funds.

If something is illegal (like beating one’s wife to death) then this is fully covered by the LAW. We do not need nagging on almost every aspect of our lives.

That stupid one with the grim reaper at the crossroads makes me want to go shoot the minister of fucking transport frankly.

No Pete. Government initiated advertising nagging us all the time is NOT ‘good for us’. Simply put, it is the misuse of our taxes which would be better spent elsewhere. No government mind control is EVER an acceptable use of my funds.

But why not? If it does influence a change in behavior and thereby save future costs, why is that not acceptable?

You seem comfortable with the fact the commercial advertisement do change our behavior (otherwise why would they spend millions) and that’s okay with you. E.g. a car company advertising a car as powerful, fast, with performance, driving slick through curves is okay with you, even though it may encourage speeding and risky behavior.

But as soon as the government tries to do something to counteract that, then it’s a waste of money. Either advertising works or it doesn’t. If it does, then it’s not a waste of money, is it?

  54. Captain Neurotic (201) Says:

Whilst govt ads cost the taxpayer $$ it can be argued that this public health initiative saves taxpayers money else where by less hospital fees and wages to those hurt. But this is all negated by a private health care system :)

    really..?..dave..?

    http://whoar.co.nz/2010/obesity-the-killer-combination-of-salt-fat-and-sugar/

“..Then, in the 80s, something changed.

Three decades ago, fewer than one Briton in 10 was obese.

    One in four is today.

It is projected that by 2050, Britain could be a “mainly obese society”.

Similar, and even more pronounced, changes were taking place in the US ..

.. where researchers found that not only were Americans entering their adult years at a significantly higher weight but ..

.. while on average everyone was getting heavier .. the heaviest people were gaining disproportionately more weight than others.

The spread between those at the upper end of the weight curve and those at the lower end was widening.

Overweight people were becoming more overweight.

What had happened to add so many millions of pounds to so many millions of people?

Certainly food had become more readily available, with larger portion sizes, more chain restaurants and a culture that promotes out-of-home eating.

But having food available doesn’t mean we have to eat it.

What has been driving us to overeat?

It is certainly not a want born of fear of food shortages.

Nor is it a want rooted in hunger or the love of exceptional food.

We know, too, that overeating is not the sole province of those who are overweight.

Even people who remain slim often feel embattled by their drive for food.

It takes serious restraint to resist an almost overpowering urge to eat.

Yet many, including doctors and healthcare professionals, still think that weight gainers merely lack willpower, or perhaps self-esteem.

Few have recognised the distinctive pattern of overeating that has become widespread in the population.

No one has seen loss of control as its most defining characteristic.

“Higher sugar, fat and salt make you want to eat more.”

I had read this in scientific literature, and heard it in conversations with neuroscientists and psychologists.

But here was a leading food designer, a Henry Ford of mass-produced food, revealing how his industry operates.

To protect his business, he did not want to be identified .. but he was remarkably candid ..

.. explaining how the food industry creates dishes to hit what he called the “three points of the compass”.

Sugar, fat and salt make a food compelling.

They stimulate neurons, cells that trigger the brain’s reward system and release dopamine ..

.. a chemical that motivates our behaviour .. and makes us want to eat more.

Many of us have what’s called a “bliss point”, at which we get the greatest pleasure from sugar, fat or salt.

Combined in the right way, they make a product indulgent .. high in “hedonic value”.

During the past two decades, there has been an explosion in our ability to access and afford what scientists call highly “palatable” foods.

By palatability, they don’t just mean it tastes good: ..

.. they are referring primarily to its capacity to stimulate the appetite.

Restaurants sit at the epicentre of this explosion, along with an ever-expanding range of dishes that hit these three compass points.

Sugar, fat and salt are either loaded into a core ingredient (such as meat, vegetables, potato or bread), layered on top of it, or both.

Deep-fried tortilla chips are an example of loading – the fat is contained in the chip itself.

When it is smothered in cheese, sour cream and sauce, that’s layering.

It is not just that fast food chains serve food with more fat, sugar and salt ..

.. or that intensive processing virtually eliminates our need to chew before swallowing ..

.. or that snacks are now available at any time.

It is the combination of all that .. and more..”

you/we have been well and truly ‘suckered’..

    ..eh..?

  58. Fletch (2,366) Says:

And this year, 2010, this sick campaign to throw us into darkness (literally) has TV3, Toyota, TradeMe, Powershop and MoreFM to thank for their sponsorship and support in their advertising (Herald On Sunday 14/3/10 and no doubt other media).

I guess TVNZ would look a bit stupid promoting it, what with it’s station I.D spots featuring local celebs using whatever light source they can to shine up into the night sky.

  59. Grendel (469) Says:

for me its simple. the ads trying to convince me to use their cleaning product or drink their drink are trying to ask me to willingly to part with my money, i have the choice to or not. and its that company spending its own money to try and convince me.

the government adds are almost to a tee patronising, condescending “Thou SHalt Not” ads where i am being told off and warned about not doing something that is basic common knowledge. also they are using my money to do it, so unlike the private company won;t be doing a cost/benefit analysis to see if its worth it.

do i really need to see a diseased lung on tv if i don;t smoke?

why would i want to pay for the government to try and ruin my dinner by showing me the effects of something i don;t do? or show me how you can die if you drink and drive?

they have been running those car crash ads for years and they have never been able to empiracally show that they do any good, that they have a positive impact on reducing the statistics.

its a waste of money, and the number of these ads is rising steadily. it used to be you might get one of any of these in a show, now you are lucky to avoid at least 1 per commercial if not more.

You’re wasting your time making any kind of appeal to him. Ignore the arsehole. It is the only way.

Narcissists are obsessed with attention. Even when it comes with a large dose of contempt and derision, they can’t help themselves. In the exchanges he provokes on here, where we might see him as an amoral shameless and cringeworthy coward using Kiwiblog to promote his own worthless blog, (that he describes as “work” and thereby makes it just another example of the rank self deceit that governs his existence) Phil sees himself as dancing in the spotlight.

I’d like an earth hour every clear night, the night sky is amazing when you are away from all our light pollution. I love the secluded spot where I live, the worst aspect is a street light that no one else needs and we don’t want – we are the last ones on our street and would rather have darkness when it is dark.

Pete, was earth hour about just enjoying the planet and it’s skies I’d agree.

    It ain’t!

It isn’t even about “saving” the planet, it’s about a small group of fuckwits demanding that their way is best and all people bow to their “expertise”.

Phil – I choose not to use my real name so that my business is not compromised by any views I might express as an individual.

Here’s a hint for you though; the business has nothing to do with financial services, unless you count investing in people.

Social marketing, it’s called. All those adverts that upset you. I think they have value. I know there is a view that passing a law should do the trick. But that suggests that laws work for everything. Think about the days of six o’clock and Sunday closing. There was always a back door. Always a “house bar”. Even home brew. Think about the prohibition on abortions, and the consequences of that. Not a lot of back street abortionists, but enough to ruin lives. Enough unwanted children to blight futures. Think, even, about drunk driving.

Laws don’t always work, and one of the reasons is that there are plenty who don’t recognise the consequences in advance of their own fate. For some it’s stupidity – not in some awful sense of evil, oppressive lack dullness, just the simple stupidity that doesn’t get past arithmetic to mathematics, that thinks bronze age science should determine one’s ethical and scientific view of the world. For some it’s the recklessness of youth – you may grow out of it, or may instead fail to survive it. For some it’s mere ignorance – perhaps contributing to such things as the Type II diabetes epidemic. Though a reliance on bronze age science may be an example of ignorance rather than stupidity in some cases. In some cases it’s addiction – back to Type II diabetes and drunk driving again. Social marketing can help address these things.

And save money into the bargain, if it’s effective.

And let’s hope they don’t limit their efforts to advertising. Because that’s only one way of trying to influence our behaviours.

You may well argue that you don’t want your taxes spent on harangues directed at you. That you don’t want your taxes spent on attempts to branwash you into doing things that you might not want to do. But do you want even more money spent on wheelchair-bound accident victims? Or dialysis treatment for alcholic, never-employed kidney-failed diabetic no hopers (I think there’s a lot of them coming down the pipeline)? Or educations that bleed out into the seat of a car crash or down the gutter of a street-side brawl? Maybe even better to suggest some social marketing goals of your own. Like the ostracism of lazy stay-at-homes whose children are an income source. Or the evil of 12-year old brides and 14-year old motherhood. Or the advantages of organ donation.

My partner and I pay what I consider a near unconscionable amount in taxes (and there’s an irony in that, believe me). So I really would like to see Phil get a job. I don’t mind if that “Political Busker” gets out and pushes his barrow, but I really was pleased to see him told to get of his bum and support himself (I was surprised to read that he continues to get the accommodation supplement). And I’m not too happy if I’m helping to pay for the support of his children (though I guess if his partner was motivated enough to get shot of him, she may also have been motivated enough to do more than that, and I have to concede that there are circumstances in which devoting time to the kids is of real value in and of itself). I really would like to see Red get in charge of his depression and get paid employment. And I would really like to see lots of the costs of foolishness and stupidity cut back by education or brainwashing, or whatever one might call it.

So whinge and cringe at those adverts if you like. But I think that as a general rule you’re wrong.

BTW – Does anyone recall the adverts for middle class social welfare: that phone call across the room to call the teenager to the table? I haven’t seen them for a good long while. What exactly were they designed to make us think about?

After midnight. Stupid myself. I have to get on line earlier if there’s to be any point. Given the hour, there’s no point in proofing or editing. Apologies to the estimable Mr Farrar for subjecting him to this diatribe.

    @Dave Mann:

It is not Powershop’s style to preach to anyone at all. Irrespective of anyone’s views on climate change it just makes sense to understand your power consumption and reduce it if practical to do so. EarthHour represents a high profile opportunity that is topical and relevant to our business. It also allows us to promote technology we have developed (our PowerSaver application) at relatively low cost. As you have also noted EarthHour also has some big media sponsors, so from our point of view the bang-for-buck is great. We do have some brains, and we are not just jumping on a band-wagon – we are merely promoting our business to a target audience in a cost effective way, it’s just common sense.
