It’s the “vast riches” bit that gets me. Maybe there is $18 billion worth of gold and silver in the Coromandel, but how much of it will go into the Government’s coffers? I assume the (foreign owned) mining companies will take the lion’s share, so what’s the rake off for NZ worth? This is a genuine question by the way. I am a bit concerned over the figures Gerry Brownlee is throwing around. It might be worth digging if the country was to earn $18 billion, but not if it was only getting a small percentage of the worth.

It’s not that we have suddenly discovered all this mineral wealth. The easy stuff was recovered long ago, most if not all of what is left is lower grade, the reason why it is still there is because of higher costs of recovery.

But if some of has become viable due to newer recovery techniques and international companies do the work and earn the profits it can still result in a lot of employment, and business for support companies.

It fucking amazes me that the very same pinko’s who moan about the prospect of mining 0.2 of our national parks are the same wankers who think that we as a nation can continue with the welfare state in its current form.

The choices are these as I see it…

1. Mine and let the nation share in the wealth

2. Do not mine, slash government spending and tax payer funded services.

Opposition to mining is not based on environmental issues, it is all about keeping the nation poor and keeping taxes high.

I hear that GCSB has been given a budget increase from $47m to $72m so they can build themselves a new building. I wonder what the security will be like? And if they can keep its location secret from the media – whom they chased away yesterday.

I also read reports that your PM is mentioning the possibility of changing the Crimes Act to remove the claim of right as a defence.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love the way media and politicians run around like headless chooks whenever something happens they don’t understand but, really, the reaction since Wednesday to a single jury verdict on the facts puts you all to shame. Why isn’t the GCSB accountable, and answering for its security failures.

Australia’s starting to look good.

Why do you say that? Given the likely increases in value of such resources… perhaps there’s a strategic calculation to be made (i.e. leave the oil in the ground till it’s worth $500/bbl)?

The minimal returns this activity will generate now won’t be the ‘saving of NZ’ and aren’t likely to allow us to catch the Aussie’s (especially if some/most of the profits from the activity will go to Aussie firms).

nb; not anti mining, just turning your question around to ask why you think now is better than later.

Phuck party loyalties its all about the Auckland vote.. TV1 poll 50% for 50% against National mining DoC land.
They now have more than a 50-50 chance.. of being elected. When most Aucklanders leave in the weekends to places like the green belts like the Coromandel Peninsula to get away from Aucklands traffic chaos and pollution.
They know you don’t phuck with the Aucklanders playgrounds if you want votes.

Not sure this is totally fair, as the councils were working according to government guidelines right?

If the estimated cost of 10 to 20 billion is correct, we are in for a bit of trouble.

This makes the kiwirail / acc woes look rather trivial.

The failure of building and construction regulators is astonishing. We should have a law change going after these peoples assets.

The history of the world economy shows that resources never run out, and replacements for resources are usually (always?) cheaper and better than the old resource. The bronze age didn’t end because people ran out of bronze. And bronze isn’t expensive today. Instead, the bronze age ended because people worked out how to mine and produce iron.

At some stage, someone will make a better and cheaper replacement for oil. Any oil still in the ground then will be suddenly worthless. We’d be better to extract and sell it now while it is worth something.

Perhaps so, but they’re the ones that issue the permits, and on that basis alone they have a duty of care – both to developers (keep out the cowboys) and the eventual owners (safety, strength, minimise maintenence/rot, etc).

And I’m pretty certain most of the leaky buildings were in Auckland (on a per head capita basis), and so why should the rest of the country (taxpayers through the government picking up the tab) have to pay. Councils (and thus ratepayers) picking up the tab keeps the costs in line with regional costs where the bad building practices/permits occurred/were issued. Surely this is the most equitable solution for the man in the street – wherever he may live.

wrceck1080 – this pisses me off. I should not have to pay one cent for other people’s building misadventures. All those big houses with no flashings on teh windows, internal gutters etc etc. Their problem, not mine. I checked out my house before I bought it.

Whoops, sorry about the delay – work to do and all that but I see that davidp and kiwigreg held the fort.

Why now rather than later?

1. I’m not a gambler so I would take a certainty now rather than an uncertainty at asome unspecified time in the future. For the same reason I would take forward exchange cover only when I have a transaction to match it to.

2. Compound interest effect. Better to start getting cash in early – it will certainly be worth a lot more in the future if invested wisely.

3. The multiplier effect. The multiplier effect of course defines the spin-off benefits of a dollar spent now. There are no spin-offs if the dollar is not spent until an unspecified time in the future.

4. I’m just a little bit selfish

Still it is good that you do not oppose mining on conservation land per se and that for you it is a matter not of “if” but of “when”.

GCSB is one of a number of NZ intelligence agencies. Their job is to gather information to assist the NZ government to develop and implement its foreign policy. This might involve security (which seems to be your particular obsession), but it also involves political, economic, trade, and criminal intelligence. Governments, both National and Labour led, must value this contribution to foreign policy or they wouldn’t continue to fund intelligence collection. It’s completely obvious that informed policy making is better than uninformed policy making.

You seem to believe that governments should blunder about the world stage with no idea what is going on, other than what is available from foreign government press releases and official diplomatic communications. That’s the sort of hopeless naivety that you’d expect from a 13 year old emo girl. But the rest of us live in the real world.

If a primitive person had dug up a dollar of bronze in 1000 BC and invested the dollar at 3pct compounding, then his or her descendants would have 3 x 10^38 dollars 😉 Even assuming a 1pct margin over inflation, these people would have 9 x 10^12 dollars.

If the primitive person had left the dollar of bronze in the ground, then that bronze would still be worth about a dollar.

(And yeah, I know you don’t mine bronze… it’s a thought exercise.)

What you describe davidp is the compound interest effect. The multiplier says that if I spend a dollar, the person that receives it will save some, pay some in tax (possibly), and spend the balance (say 80c e.g.) Of that 80c some gets saved some gets spent etc etc. So one dollar spent by me becomes possibly 3 or 4 dollars of spending (i.e. economic activity) even the taxes get paid out in wages, welfare benefits and the purchase of goods and services and so the money goes round. The faster it goes round, the greater is the multiplier in a given time period. What remains however is that if the dollar is not spent, it cannot multiply into greater economic activity.

And that is what the anti- brigade can never get their heads around or explain.

The deferrers don’t see that creating economic activity now is more beneficial for the economy (i.e. the collection of people who participate in economic activity) than keeping the wealth in the ground until some later unspecified date.

The greenies won’t even talk about rational economic arguments because they can only defend their position by saying that they wish to choke the economy (i.e. the collection of people who participate in economic activity) and return us to the stone age all the while they are tapping on their plastic computer keyboards, on the copper wire internet, with gold and silver connections and silicon chips.

Go figure.

The thin red is an expression based on the British defensive formation of lines of two or three ranks using precision volley fire where other armies tended to operate in column, particularly the French who dominated Europe with the pais de charge smashing everything in its way. Witt the notable exception of the British infantry who just for the hell of it trained with live ammunition. (Money spent of defence in peace time is not wasted.)

It was first coined in relation to Balaclava, but they were facing Russian cavalry, not infantry columns so contextually Waterloo is acceptable. Technically the “thin red line” fought from Flanders to Flanders (work it out for yourself).

Anyway its still not an entirely appropriate analogy. Health Care is Obamas Dien Bien Phu. A clustrfuck entirely of his own making.

My answer was that the question was irrelevant. GCSB is a tool of foreign policy, rather than of security. I don’t have evidence that GCSB has helped inform NZ’s foreign policy, since GCSB’s advice to government is (by definition) secret. However the odds are close to zero that GCSB has never made a single useful contribution to NZ’s foreign policy interests in 33 years of operation BUT government has continued to fund the organisation and expand its role. I’d sooner bet on UFOs, that the moon landings were faked, that god existed, or that George Bush destroyed the WTC so that he could steal Iraqi oil.

So thanks for your contribution to the debate on the provision of office accommodation for NZ public servants. And for your commentary on the abilities of the NZ media who you believe wouldn’t be able to find a building that has been announced publicly, is being built just a couple of blocks from parliament, and which you can find on the Internet by Googling “new GCSB building”. But really, NZers aren’t children who need an Australian to tell us how to run our affairs.

The value of wages will decline 0.5 per cent in the 12 months through March 2011 as inflation exceeds salary growth, while unemployment remains elevated, according to the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research’s consensus forecast of ten financial and economic agencies. Wages are expected to grow 1.9 per cent this year, down from 2.2 per cent in the previous survey, and lagging behind the expected inflation 2.4 per cent for the same period, up from a forecast 2.1 per cent in the December survey.

That reminds me of when I was at Rongotai College (which is adjacent Wgtn airport) in the late 70s (76-80) and hearing the Skyhawks taking off – they were still in service back then. While the college pretty much ignored normal air traffic, when the Skyhawks were about the whole school literally stopped and listened – it was like tearing calico – beautiful music to mechanically minded teenage boys.

You’d recall that wouldn’t you GS?

If conservation land is dug up it becomes an open cast mine, which seem to be your cult.

Yes I remember that well Kris. Quadratic equations in a hot classroom after lunch were no match for imagining what it must have been like behind the controls of those jets. Boys and toys! re input, I’ve been pretty busy lately and KB commenting has taken the hit. Still fighting the fight. Good to see you are too. Oh, planning on jogging for Earth Hour… now that the EPA has declared my breath to be a pollutant. That, or driving my V8 up and down the road in 1st gear.

Yup, was there too KK, BB & KK, remember hearing and seeing the tails of the Hercs as they taxied into the Govt hanger apron, when at PE, seeing the gym was quite close to the airport etc. Saw the RAAF’s sharp end quite a bit, touching and going. Good times.

I note that ‘earth hour’ is coming around again.

I urge all of you who have not be taken in by the climate change con to do as I did last year and ensure that every light and every electrical appliance is turned on during the ‘earth hour’.
