A very interesting book review in today’s Christchurch Press for Telecom and telecommunications watchers within the newspaper’s South Island distribution range.

Michael Bassett reviews Theresa Gattung’s Bird on a Wire.

Among his observations from meetings with Gattung when Bassett and his wife were working on a biography of Roderick Deane: Gattung was politically naive. This of course would have contributed to Telecom’s tightrope walking and subsequent surprise at Cunliffe’s sudden unbundling of Telecom’s copper network.

Her lack of feeling for politics persists, Bassett argues. As Bassett puts it: “I recalled feeling that something drastic was about to happen to Telecom. Yet in her autobiography Gattung’s political intelligence seems to have been woefully astray.”

Bassett also recalls from his days in politics that the price the Americans initially paid for the privatised Telecom in 1990 was so high it “stunned even the Cabinet of the day”.

Bassett over-eggs the pudding on Deane, IMHO. He describes Deane as “surely the most savvy business brain of the last quarter century”. Bassett means in NZ, but that’s still an extreme claim.

John Boscowen and Rodney Hide really put the pressure on Dr Wayne Mapp during question time in Parliament on Thursday. Mapp was made to look quite foolish in the face of cold hard questions which revealed NIWA’s dubious calculations. Dubious because despite referring to Salingers calculations it seems no one can find the Schedule of Adjustments which should have been attached to his Paper explaining how and why the Temp readings were all adjusted, ie the methodology.
Also I was puzzled to hear Mapp say the raw data from 1930 for NZ shows a 1 degree rise? The graphs of NZ Raw data supplied by NIWA and in the below link shows warming of .06 degrees per century since 1850. Insignificant in the IPCC’s terms.
Also the IPCC state warming is only .6 degrees for the whole world (and this is disputed as being far too high), so perhaps NIWA could explain why NZ is higher at a whole 1 degree. I doubt they will somehow.

Got this in the email, apologies if it is old hat but I had to share it. Not sure how true it is but very funny!

“A guy who purchased his lovely wife a pocket Tazer for their anniversary submitted this:

Last weekend I saw something at Larry’s Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse-sized Tazer.

The effects of the Tazer were supposed to be short lived, with no long term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety….??

WAY TOO COOL! Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home.. I loaded two AAA batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button. Nothing! I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button and pressed it against a metal surface at the same time, I’d get the blue arc of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs.

AWESOME!!! Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave.

Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn’t be all that bad with only two AAA batteries, right?

There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh & blood moving target.

I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second) and then thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat. But, if I was going to give this thing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised.

Am I wrong?

So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and Tazer in another. The directions said that a one-second burst would shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; and a three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water. Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the batteries.

All the while I’m looking at this little device measuring about 5” long, less than 3/4 inch in circumference (loaded with two itsy, bitsy AAA batteries); pretty cute really, and thinking to myself, ‘no possible way!’

What happened next is almost beyond description, but I’ll do my best.

I’m sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side so as to say, ‘Don’t do it stupid,’ reasoning that a one second burst from such a tiny lil ole thing couldn’t hurt all that bad.. I decided to give myself a one second burst just for heck of it.

I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and…

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION. WHAT THE… !!!

I’m pretty sure Hulk Hogan ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner, then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again. I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position, with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs! The cat was making meowing sounds I had never heard before, clinging to a picture frame hanging above the fireplace, obviously in an attempt to avoid getting slammed by my body flopping all over the living room.

Note: If you ever feel compelled to ‘mug’ yourself with a Tazer, one note of caution: there is NO such thing as a one second burst when you zap yourself! You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor! A three second burst would be considered conservative! A minute or so later (I can’t be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point), I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace.. The recliner was upside down and about 8 feet or so from where it originally was. My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs. I had no control over the drooling. Apparently I had crapped in my shorts, but was too numb to know for sure, and my sense of smell was gone. I saw a faint smoke cloud above my head, which I believe came from my hair.

I’m still looking for my testicles and I’m offering a significant reward for their safe return!

Island disappears after 30 year dispute.

For nearly 30 years, India and Bangladesh have argued over control of a tiny rock island in the Bay of Bengal. Now rising sea levels have resolved the dispute – the island’s gone.

Except this is not an island made of rock. Nope, it’s basically a sandbar … a muddy large flat in a river delta. These areas grow, shrink and disappear constantly all over the world. Even NOAA’s own dubious sea level measurements don’t support the idea that the ‘island’ was lost to rising seas.

For AP (Seth Borenstein?) to label this natural event as evidence of AGW is desperate deceit. Again.

So Murray, no idea on how w are goig with closing thenincome gap with Oz? In the year and a half of national it has widened further, and what have they come up with so far?

A “jobs summit” that produced no new ideas about creating work.

A cycleway to nowhere that hasn’t had the first wheel turned on it.

A repot that supposedly tells us how to close the gap which the government didn’t even look at before binning. But why not, it was just a sop to ACT, never a real attempt at policy direction.

A plan to “mine” National parks when there is no hard evidence of minerals to be mined.

The destruction of local democracy in Auckland and Canterbury to please the party’s funders.

Yelling at benefciaries to find non existent jobs as a play to National’s constituency.

And no real policy or action of substance.

Wrong. There were plenty of ideas raised. The more the better IMO. A government that supports local business and local entrepreneurship has a ‘job summit’ happening in every SME office in NZ, every day.

I think it is better than Q&A, marginally, but the same old unbalanced panel. You get an Actoid in Fran and a lefty and no balance in the centre.

The hit job on Act was low.

I mentioned on here last year that the left will try to win next year by destroying Act. What you are seeing are these wheels being put in motion by the lefts media mates. Act need to be VERY VERY careful here. Getting Douglas on board was the stupidest thing they could have done. If they go in to the election attacking National, as Hooton says, this will also be a mistake. I feel the centre-right need to work together to not allow another left wing government. Attacking National is not the way to go as it will only give ammunition to the left. Those on the far right will naturally swing to Act so I think Act are better to attack Labour that to attack the Nats.

What the hell has nude modelling got to do with politics? Don’t get excited boys – she was “Rubenesque”.

ACT is doing a pretty good job of destroying themselves.

As you say yourself:

Getting Douglas on board was the stupidest thing they could have done.

Perkbuster Rodney shot himself in the foot, then failed coup by Douglas and Roy.
Add in the growing grumble over the handling of the supercity.

It’s not the left they have to be worried about.

I would not, obviously, expect to see the gap closed, but I would expect to se progress. I would expect to see policies.

But so far, all we have had was the Brash report, commissioned as part of the deal with ACT, As expected, the brash report was full of policies favoured by ACT, but it had no examination of the reason the wages gap exists or of empirical evidence to show their reccommendations would do anything other than please Hide and Douglas.

I would not expect to see articles in the press this past week predicting a further decline in NZ real wages.

I would not expect a GST 50% higher than the Oz GST.

I would not expect a government incapable of delivering jobs growth attempting to hide its failure by benny bashing.

In short, I would not expect a National/ACT government as the way towards closing the gap.

And are these the same 1000’s of jobs, or new ones? Are these, in fact, new jobs, or just the result of people shuffling jobs from one employer to another. There is always a lot of labour churn.

Whats happening to our juries?
I have a certain amount of pity for BJ, if constantly being labelled “NZ’s youngest convicted killer” isn’t enough of a burden to carry for the rest of your life you have this bizarre media fixation with everything he does the kid doesn’t have a chance of rehabilitation even if he wanted it.
Now I dont have a problem with his original conviction & I applaud the jury for having the balls to convict a 12yr old of such a heinous crime, but he’s done the crime & now he’s done the time, the constant media beat up is nothing but that a media beat up imo.
Now compare the murder of Michael Choy with the murder of Navtej Singh, both killed by a group of young thugs motivated only by their own wants & desires, both premeditated, both only actually killed by one of the perps, one with a single blow to the head with a softball bat the other with shot with a gun.
Here the similarities end Choy’s murder ends in 2 convicted of murder & 6 with manslaughter, Singh 1 conviction for murder the others only of aggravated robbery. I fail to see the difference & if not from the over exuberence of the one welding the softball bat BJ would only be a bi line not a head line.
Taking that into account along with the acquittal of Bain, the Waihopou 3, the failure to convict Kahui & I cant help but dispair at the descisions juries are coming up with.

Have US Republicans turned feral?

Death threats, stones thrown through windows, an image on GOP home page of Nancy Pelosi surrounded by flames (a modern day Joan of Arc?), a gas line cut to what they thought was a congressman’s home, terrorising wives and kids of politicians, and, most intimidating, a serious call for armed revolution. No kidding, you can hear the menace as they issue their calls to arms – Reservoir Dogs!

Can you imagine the result if they were successful? Would anyone not fundamentalist and gun-toting survive? Would there be a church on every street corner, forced conversions, atheists and registered democrats burning at the stake, pregnant mothers electrocuted for accidental miscarriages?

And all this in a supposed bastion of democracy and human rights?

Any student of US culture able to explain this madness?

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicts rising sea levels will devour 17 per cent of Bangladesh by 2050, displacing at least 20 million people. More than 155 million people live in the country.

The Bangladesh non-governmental organisation Coastal Watch says an average of 11 Bangladeshis are losing their homes to rising waters every hour.

Professor Hazra predicts that 15 per cent of the Indian Sundarbans region on the northern shore of the Bay of Bengal will be submerged by 2020.

Note that the islands are disappearing through a combination of climate change based causes, with rising sea level being the final nail in the coffin.

This was touched on yesterday.
The sea level rise in the thirty years referred to may have been as much as 4.3 inches and so may not have been a major factor.

In fact, the wheel seems to have first been used in Mesopotamia 4000 or 5000 years ago.

The Arabs did not begin moving out of Arabia till thousands of years later, and did not sweep through Mesopotamia and the Middle East until from the 7th century AD. They were primitive tribes when the civilisations of Mesopotamia flourished, with peoples including Hittites, Babylonians, and Assyrians.

Lucy is confused because the modern day peoples of Mesopotamia mostly speak Arabic and are usually Sunni Islam followers.

Anyway, modern Arabs (to whom I was referring) are the descendants of the original Arabian and Semite inhabitants (all Asiatics, originally) and the passing parade of conquerors. They did not arise spontaneously, out of the ether.

Semites adopted Arabic with the Arab invasion. As did many others over the centuries, eg the Central Asians who became the Turks of the Ottoman Empire.

But your Mesopotamians of 4000 years ago were not Europeans, were they?

And for Nomads, the Arabs did pretty well, didn’t they? They even got to our oil before us!

I hope everybody has all of their lights switched on and as many electric appliances as possible running at full power.

Earth hour has reached it’s halfway point, I reckon the Bruv household has managed to increase the strain on the national grid considerably.

It is all the more enjoyable this year as we have new “Green” neighbours who ‘reminded’ me this afternoon to make sure that all our lights were turned off at 8.30pm, I took great delight in waiting until the turned all of theirs off before turning all of ours on.

By the way Doofah, aside from you being full of shit, albeit tres selective, my lights etc stayed on as well.

Global warming is not a problem individuals can address in isolation. It’s a governmental problem. Modern society has evolved to be dependent on GHG emissions and only governmental action can change that.

One could say Earth hour sends a message to governments, but they all get it anyway, so what’s the point?
