Will the gangs move? Add this story to Scoopit!.

The Dom Post reports:

Local government leaders are seeking a law change to allow other councils to follow Whanganui’s lead and ban gang patches.

Whanganui was given the right to pass a bylaw last year banning all gang insignia except tattoos from public places, but other councils wanting to do the same must get their own enabling law through Parliament.

Local Government New Zealand president Lawrence Yule said the organisation was trying to get a blanket law change that would allow any council to pass similar bylaws.

No surprise.

Palmerston North has also floated a ban on patches if the Whanganui law sees an exodus of gang members to the city, though mayor Jono Naylor said there was no problem at present.

So gang members would rather live in Wanganui with a ban on their patches, than move to Palmerston North.

Can’t really blame them!

And you’ll be aware that the first prosecution, of a Hell’s Angels member, has been successful, and the Court has upheld the ban.

    Laws 1; Gangs nil.

It’s one very small step in the right direction, but a bloody good one!

Interestingly, despite moves by the council to remove the fence around the pad of the local Angels chapter, the council issued a consent to build the fence in the eighties, their neighbours want it to stay.

It’ll work well in Palmy. Particularly considering that in three years I’ve never seen a gange patch here.

Hey we could legislate against polar bears too! That’s show those big white seal munching bruins wouldn’t it.

If it keeps out both John Cleese and RKBee than I’m for it. Sorry we can’t name our dump after after you RKBee, Cleese the Unfunny already got that one.

  12. bearhunter (859) Says:

Murray, most of the Highbury Electric Company (sorry, Black Power) are in prison, the Mutts have taken sizable judicial hits too. There’s still the occasional sighting of a Tyrant coming over the hill from Pahiatua, and of course there is the *ahem* respectable group of motorcycle enthusiasts, the Mothers…

  13. Jo99(1) Says:

Has anyone checked how many mongrel mob are left. Last that I heard from people in Tauramanui was that a large group of MM had moved there from Wanganui (or Whanganui)

  14. Murray (8,734) Says:

Can’t say I’ve seen them bear. Now Wanganui you can’t let rip with a gimpy without dropping half a dozen.

Half of Upper Hutt is patched as well. And shall we discuse Auckland pristene southern regions?

  15. RRM (4,112) Says:

Palmerston North is simply too much of a mecca of culture and fine art. Criminal gang members would feel uncomfortable in such upscale surroundings.

Think I’m joking? Behold, Palmy on canvas:

“Where are you living RRM. I’ll bet I can shit all over your area with as much ease.”

I don’t know about RRM but I live in New Plymouth.

That has won the Top Town award from North and South Magazine in 2008 (judged “the best place in New Zealand to live, love, work and raise a family”).

The city also won three awards at the 11th International Awards for Liveable Communities held in Dongguan, China, 6-10 November 2008:

Whole City Gold award (population category 20,000 – 75,000)
    Criteria award for Community Sustainability
Gold award for community project (natural) – the Coastal Walkway.

I’ve shown you mine.. you show me yours.. Why any one would want to live in Palmerston North.. I mean.
