Here comes The Wanderer

DPF has been kind enough to offer me fifteen minutes of fame and is allowing me the opportunity to broadcast some of my ramblings on his blog.

By way of background, I’m a lawyer living in the Middle East, who’s hooked on travelling, books and politics.  I suspect I’ll probably do a bit of posting about life in general, and my travels, in this part of the world- Afghanistan, Qatar and Iran were my three most recent trips and I’ve got to say, I recommend them all. Most of the expats here try to get out of town on at least a monthly basis.

Just so you know, I’m a National party supporter and have been since university when two fellas I met took me under their right wing wings, but to be fair, I’m open to anything sensible.  I’m an independent sort who doesn’t much like being told what to do, I miss my dog, and one of my favourite things about living where I do has been filling my wardrobe with gorgeous dresses.  I mean, no chance I could have afforded a Gucci ball gown back home.  In fact, I’m not even sure if there is a Gucci shop in NZ- perhaps in Auckland.

I’ve embraced driving like a local (and am consequently concerned about driving outside of the Middle East ever again), like Cactus Kate, I’m a fan of my Fillipina maid, I’ve picked up the habit of going to the Thai salon round the corner at least once a week, and to my surprise, I was disconcerted by the length of the skirts (more like belts) on expats when I was last in Dubai – I guess this place is starting to seep into me.

I’m also amazed that in my time here so far, I’ve had more visitors from home than I ever got when I lived in a provincial New Zealand city for a few years.  You move a few hours drive away, they forget you.  You move to a tiny country half way round the world and everyone wants to come visit.  Who knew?

Enough of me, next post will be travels, politics or home.
