Queens Wharf

April 20th, 2010 at 3:00 pm by David Farrar

Finally an agreement for party central.

Looks a lot better than the earlier designs.

No railings around the wharf? With tens of thousands of drunk rugby fans at night time with a long drop in to a winter temperature harbour, there is going to be quite a death rate.

I still fail to see the reason we need it. Wait and do something right with the place it’s not as if we haven’t got enough bars around the place.
I’m surprised we haven’t seen more of an outcry from current business owners, ie the Viaduct bars and restaurants.
So theoutcome will be some new owners will make shit loads while current ones go broke….. Good plan Mr Key.

@davidp – natural selection at work.

The design is lovely if Aucklanders are asked to pay for it, and poxy & excessive if I am to be asked to pay.

Better than a tent.. better than whats there now.. but you can bank on Banks being unempreessed.. making it an election issue for his Super city bid..

Umm, much as i like the design, it seems to be single purpose, or event orientated. does that mean we will have a twin of wellingtons queens wharfs? those ugly barn like structures that everybody hates?

10 million bucks and it gets ripped down!!! Now that’s clever.
Maybe JK is funding it and owning the bars :)

I suppose they could have built a big Luxury Super Yacht instead… then after the games sell it of at a profit.

Would only get a yacht with 10 million but I like your thinking :)

I thought rugby was played at some sort of stadium. What the hell is this for anyway?

The waterfront stadium over the road from Vector Arena could have been Auckland’s party central for the next 50 years.
    Silly, silly Aucklanders… :-(

That was the old days….. They would play at Eden Park, we would arrive half cut by bus, we would leave 3/4 cut and try and find the bus, we would finally get back to the then dark and dingy Newmarket and get fully cut…. Wake the following day in someones garage with someones wife/girlfriend cooking for 20 and ask who won the game. ahhhhhh, the good ol days :)

Nowdays….. arrive by train, any cut and not allowed in, watch a pack of poofs run around, find way to “party central”, have to many drinks and get arrested, or leave and get bashed by some little thug.

Party Central? Pffft. Given that the motorway will be clogged and at a standstill, instead make that road space useful by setting up 100’s of sturdy trestles tables, serve some drinks, apply some hiremaster mood lighting… and Auckland can earn their place in the Guinness Book of Records with the world’s longest bar :)

Might have to be making many replicas of the Michael Moore Memorial Trophy.

    Oops, wrong code!

Anyway, I think I’ll head off overseas for much of the duration of the RWC, assuming I can get leave from my job. The prospect of an invasion of thousands of drunken, boorish thugby fans gives me the shits.

RRM, the Waterfront stadium was a pissing gimmick and Labour boondoggle. I schooled Duckboy about that about a year ago.

Stop spending my money you b******s – either central or local (not sure who will fund)
The viaduct already exists – they can congregate there if they want.. or mission bay reserve..or devonport reserve..or anywhere next to existing bars & restuarants.

I’m sick of the whole thing and bloody Jesus Jones and Jonah Lomu and Valerie Vili already. Is there a sunny country that would accept me as a refugee for the next 18 months?

On this you are right, mind you, I am not going to head overseas, I want to hang around and enjoy the national embarrassment that the 2011 RWC is going to be, every time there is a disaster (and there will be plenty of them) I will remind as many people as I can that the bloody tournament should have been in Japan in the first place.

Mark my words, this complete fuck up of a tournament is going to cost us all a fortune, the NZRU will more than likely have to go cap in hand to the government (tax payer) for a hand out at the conclusion of the event.

While I am a rugby fan I despise the All Blacks, listening to their fans piss and moan the day after they exit the world cup is one of life’s great joys.

Yeah but it’s going to win National the next election so who cares, BB. Why d’ya think Murray Machiavelli McCully is Minister?

P.S. Name a better 2011-14 govt, from currently available realistic options…

Why do the Politicans want to spend the money so badly.
Why cant they just leave it alone.
Aucklanders will not want to go blindly into this as there has been enought planning monstrosities as it is.
Go spend Wellingtons money its closer to home

    I bloody well care!

I am fucked if I see why I should pay for the NZRU to host a RWC when the country cannot afford it.

As for the Nat’s winning the next election…..who really gives a fuck, Labour/National, there is no difference between them, both are setting this country on the path to economic ruin.

Don’t really give a fat rats arse but why do the ratepayers in Dorkland or the taxpayers in New Zealand have to spend one cent on all this crap. I thought we had a government that believed in free enterprise. I’m sure there is a lot of loot to be made by looking after all these thirsty bastards, let the private sector do it, I’m sure they will do a better job.
