TV3 axes Sunrise and ASB Business
April 8th, 2010 at 10:01 am by David FarrarDan News reports:
TV3’s morning shows Sunrise and ASB Business have been axed.
Sources tell Dan News that staff were informed of the decision this morning and the decision is effective immediately, the last shows went to air this morning.
Condolences to the staff who lose their jobs as a result. Not a surprise decision though – they just couldn’t compete with the pulling power of Paul Henry and co on TVNZ’s Breakfast.

has anyone seen the film Idiocracy?
A victory for the News according to Paul Henry is a bit like the beginnings of that.

While Oliver “Vampire zombie Sheepman” Driver was making Rick look like a dick he made himself look like a complete tosser as well.
The difference bening TV3 were paying him. Laugh your nuts off but Rick isn’t the one who just got his ass fired.

Smug. Supercilious. Sanctimonious. Socialist. Snob.
Funny how all my Sunrise words seem to start with S.
Great news.

My heart goes out to dumped Sunrise “special case” presenter, Oliver the Egotistical Giraffe – back on the scrap-heap.
Of course Driver does have his other star roles: fronting the Buy NZ campaign, while also hawking cheap Chinese imports for the Warehouse (don’t worry about the slightly mixed messages there – he doesn’t). It’s sad to see “one of NZ’s biggest stars” reduced to the role of a huckster for a cheap-import mega-retailer, but he looked at home in that role – so maybe we’ll still see more of him on TV, even if it is just during the ad breaks.

Ha ha funny that everyone will only remember the program due to Rick Giles, he managed to unjam Driver after all…

Every time I saw Driver, I could not stop thinking back to his role in Snakeskin (I think that was the name of the movie) where he played a skinhead who had a paraphilia for women’s clothing.

I don’t care, I rarely or never watched it, much the same as whatever they have on TV1 at the same time.
BB, I used to usually like what John Campbell did, but now I couldn’t care less about what his show either, it’s mostly just an extension of the drivel. I probably watch that (and whatever they have on TV1 at the same time) less than once a month – their promos put me off rather than entice me.
Henry/Driver et al – no competition with internet and newspaper.
Vote:April 8th, 2010 at 10:53 am
Never watched it, I’m always busy getting ready for work. Never watched Paul Henry’s one either, but he seems to irritate all the right people, so good for him.
Vote:April 8th, 2010 at 10:54 am
When the advertisement screening for your show is what wacky hijinks the weather guy was up to this morning, you obviously aren’t remotely interested in ratings. Shocking, this is.
Vote:April 8th, 2010 at 10:55 am
Put it away, i’m usually getting ready too, but if there’s an interesting interview on after the news it’s not too hard (in my case) to put aside 10 minutes to watch it.
Vote:April 8th, 2010 at 11:01 am
I am not really surprised as Oliver Driver in particular was reliably left-wing in his viewpoint and reliably smart aleck to many people he interviewed. I’m just not sure that the market is there for any more far left presenters.
I would like to see TV 3 employ presenters who are more mainstream in their viewpoint, while still being articulate and attractive. Hillary Barry and Michael McRoberts for example are fairly mainstream people. They present well on TV 3 news in the evening, although the news show content they are given to read is still heavily tilted towards the left.
I suspect if TV 3 hired some more mainstream people they would have a better chance of attracting a larger audience in the morning.

Murray 10:09 am,
Exactly what I thought when I first heard the news.
I always felt that Oliver Tosser was intended to be TV3′s answer to Paul Henry on TV1. The difference being Henry is genuinely funny, while Tosser just comes across as a smug and arrogant prat. Good riddance I say – not that I particularly watch TV in the morning. Condolences to other staff.
Perhaps Tosser can get another roll playing a genetically engineered sheep/human as he did in Black Sheep?
“Baaa, Baa, ba, b, (Zzzzt, slice, spurt, spurt)”
(Now I’ve offended all the vegans as well – did I mention I did some engineering work at a meat plant? – heh)

It seems to be heavily tilted towards self promotion and trivia. The script writers for Shortland Street try to be more realistic than the “news” show script writers.

What puzzles me is why TV1 and TV3 try and compete by putting on similar type shows at the same time.
If TV3 got radical and put on a good news summary repeated (with updates) every half hour in the morning, and with some in depth interviews with some serious journos (a bit like Campbell was once upon a time) then they wouldn’t compete with the same entertainment audience that TV1 are aiming at.
But that will never happen. It’s not about left or right – it’s all about commercial revenue. Advertising aims at the sheep population that can be talked into buying things they don’t need, that demographic obviously isn’t interested in news, current affairs (apart from celebrity ones) or in-depth analysis.
It’s all based on marketing brainwashing, not socialist leanings.

This show was never going to be a goer. The personality and profile of Paul Henry meant TV3 were always going to struggle unless they could produce someone to front the programme that could act as a counter to Henry. Starting out with the appalling James Coleman was a very poor decision, and the choice of Oliver Driver, who was always obviously bored and patronising, as his replacement was the nail in the coffin.

With reply to Pete George — I have often been surprised and disappointed at how left-wing TV 3 news is. Generally the line is the same as the left wing of the Labor Party — for example — homosexuality is an excellent thing, on Easter Sunday the lead story is about abuse in the Catholic Church, the need for more government regulations as the solution to most problems — the list goes on and on. So it is the Liberal/Progressive/more government/anti-Christian viewpoint of the secular left which generally dominates TV 3 news.
Admittedly we don’t have a particularly balanced viewpoint on TV one. However to me the difference in the channels can best be expressed in the presenters that follow at 7 PM after the news bulletins. On TV 1 we have Mark Sainsbury who is a fairly balanced “every man” kind of fellow. On TV 3 we have John Campbell, who is a self-proclaimed voter for the Alliance and is often to the left of the politics of Helen Clark.
I honestly believe that a private enterprise Channel like TV 3 would be better aiming for the middle of the political spectrum, even slightly to the centre right, where most New Zealanders are. I think they would attract more viewers than the likes of John Campbell and certainly than the Oliver Driver’s of this world.

i thought it was better than tvnz’s offering to be honest. i actually don’t mind paul henry, but the content is just magazine show bollocks. there is no more vapid show (apart from the one after it)
Vote:April 8th, 2010 at 11:46 am
What do you base that on?
Why do you group “left” with secular?
To suit your preference maybe. But TV shows are not targeted at what you think is the ideal group. They are driven by advertising, and that means targeting gullible people no matter what spectrum someone paints them.
If you want TV to target your demographic create a large business that relies on TV advertising for success – crucifixion burgers, or interest free finance for the Sunday plate (if they still do that).

Herein lies the problem. Their presenters were obviously picked to target the 18-35 demographic that TV3 appears to revel in, but i’m thinking that not many in this age group are going to sit down in front of the telly at breakfast time. Or if they do they’re more likely to watch C4/Juice/MTV. And that’s ultimately why it failed.
