Oyster Catcher Family

I used a kayak to get in close to these birds on a beach on Waiheke. It’s a more effective way to get close, as they’re much warier about people on the beach.

Great shot, Chthoniid. I bet it was nerve wracking on the kayak with your gear.
Only time I have seen Oystercatcher chicks was a few years ago on
    Matui/Soames Island.
If mum had kept quiet I would have missed them!

Arn’t they cute little duckies! I don’t know anything about Kayaks but I would have thought adding an outrigger or two would help to build confidence … or else a catamaran set-up … I prefer bigger more stable craft myself :-)

OK I know they are not ducks :-)
