Luc, we agree on some matters and disagree on others. She’s a spirited debater though .. and if she decides to pursue the Law side of her double degree then I hope never to be on the wrong side of the court. That said, she and I are pretty much aligned on the climate change matter. She had brought into the whole global warming package, having been force-fed this through school, but my ‘conversion’ about 3 years ago piqued her interest and she’s done her own research and changed her views. She’s unlikely to comment here at KB… but I’ll ask her.

Good for you KK – it’s interesting that young people these days, in my experience, tend to find the whole scenario a bit overwhelming, but one thing is for sure, when the shit does hit the fan, we will get the blame!

Now I have just spotted your post on Israel’s stats. Israel has always been an impressive nation, but the time is overdue for it to enter the mainstream. Let’s face facts: a bunch of European socialists colonised Palestine (the area known as Palestine for over 2000 years, but not a nation state), caused the majority of the population to flee, then, in total defiance of international law and the specific order of the United Nations, refused to allow them to return.

Eventually, this wrong will be righted. I don’t understand the problem people have with this. Just look at history. Unless swamped or slaughtered, indigenous peoples always regain control, eventually. So the sooner Israel reaches an accommodation with the Palestinians, the better it will be for all.

Then Israelis and Palestinians can set about making the country even more successful. A major dispute will be over the name of the new nation. New Palestine? The Land of Abraham?

observations further undermine the claim of a large positive feedback from water. In
fact, observations suggest that the feedback is close to zero and may even be negative.
That is, water vapor and clouds may actually diminish the relatively small direct warming
expected from CO2, not amplify it.

CHICAGO – A new “Little Ice Age” could begin in just four years, predicted Habibullo Abdussamatov, the head of space research at St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia.

Abdussamatov was speaking yesterday at the Heartland Institute’s Fourth International Conference on Climate Change in Chicago, which began Sunday and ends today.

The Little Ice Age, which occurred after an era known in scientific circles as the Medieval Warm Period, is typically defined as a period of about 200 years, beginning around 1650 and extending through 1850.

I suppose that Abdussamatov is just a denier and is plainly wrong.

Wat, yep climate sensitivity and feedback parameter is what at disputes. I brought up the subject at RealClimate in a debate there in 2007. I put forward in my argument there that the feedback parameter is not a constant but time-dependent. This same issue has been brought up by Roy Spencer, Schwartz’ s , Lindzen and others, even pro-AGW scientist Dr. Judith Curry.

I give a simple example here to demonstrate what I mean.

Let’s have a simple linear relationship as shown below. ‘Y’ is the dependent variable and ‘X’ is the independent variable and ‘a’ is just a proportional constant.

Y = a*X

Let’s assign a value for ‘a’ to make the example much easier to grasp, we can say that ‘a=2’, then the above equation is rewritten as:

Y = 2*X

The parameter ‘a’ is a constant and it will stay constant at 2 (i.e., a=2) for all time until the second coming of Jesus Christ. It will never change.

If ‘a’ is not a constant anymore, i.e., its value will be different at different time instants (time-independent), so it is not constant anymore. Our original equation is NOT:

Y = 2*X

BUT

Y = a(t)*X;

a(t) is a quantity that is time-dependent, i.e., function of time. In other words, its value will be different at various time instants, such as t=t0, t1, t2, t3, t4, t5, …

When such time-dependent parameter is not known in advance, then some numerical methods are then used to estimate it. Popular ones is the Monte Carlo. In other words it is still guess work. The hardest thing for AGW believers to swallow is the possibility that feedback parameter may be indeed time-dependent. Once this parameter is accepted as time-dependent, i.e., not constant, the GCM will collapse, no ifs no buts. The computer model uses a constant and not a time-dependent function.

Anyway my example above just uses linear relationship between X and Y, but climate models are similar but they’re expressed in differential calculus form, which are much more complex.

How about observation? Well, when this parameter has a negative value, then the temperature dip in the 1950s to 1970s is explained (i.e., model fits the data). GCM does not explain the dip in the 1950s to 1970s, because the model uses only a positive feedback (and not negative). This is more likely to be the case, i.e., the feedback parameter changes its values at different time, meaning it is time-dependent and not a constant.

That said, the time is ripe to revisit some basic climate science.

The Associated Press’s Seth Borenstein filed a story soon after the reports’ release Wednesday …

… noting that they “come after a winter in which mainstream climate science took a beating” because of controversial e-mails hacked from the University of East Anglia that stirred up the “Climategate” furor …

… and minor errors found in the last report from the International Panel on Climate Change that poured fuel on the fire.

We also recently saw the much anticipated climate summit in Copenhagen come to nothing, after world leaders failed to agree to new restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions.

Add to the mix recent poll numbers showing that Americans’ concern about global warming is on the slide …

… and you have a pretty powerful case that now is about as good a time as ever to dive into the Academies’ reports.

At first blush, some of the contents might sound familiar, but this latest scientific salvo is different from previous ones in key respects.

Some conspiracy minded climate change deniers have gotten a lot of mileage out of the fact that so much of the scientific basis for climate change has been organized and presented by a body that is affiliated with, of all the unholy un-American organizations on the planet …

… the United Nations.

Yet “the three NRC panels also feature a set of players rather different from those who compromised IPCC,” Science reported.

“Economist Gary Yohe of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, an IPCC veteran, recalls how the inaugural meeting of the panel on adapting to the impacts of climate change was his first such gathering in a decade in which three-quarters of his fellow panel members were unfamiliar to him.”

So it can hardly be said that I am out of date.

What does race have to do with it ? What I said was “cultural, political, economic, and religious”. Do you propose that those attributes are genetically coded? I’m sure arabs are fine citizens once they abandon their religion and most of their culture.
How can the Israelis be “stealing” their own land. The ARE the ancient people who the land belongs to. The question is should they allow the arab interlopers back in as guests? On evidence of the way arabs run countries where they are the majority, the answer is pretty obvious. If you don’t agree, what is your example of an arab country that has worked out well, that you hope the palestinians would be able to emulate? What positive contribution do they bring to the table of a hypothetical new state?
And how cavalier of you to say that it’s “irrelevent” what these people are like, before letting millions of them into the middle east’s only really functioning democracy, with a working economy, free press, rights for women etc etc etc. You would throw away the region’s only truly “impressive” ( your word) country without a thought?

If you read Shlomo Sand, The Invention of the Jewish People, your historical misconceptions will be corrected. This book was on the best seller lists in Israel for some 19 weeks, and he is still alive and free and teaching in Israel. Why? Because they all know it’s true!

Did you catch the Israeli joke (not so funny for Palestinians) I posted a little while ago? It goes: 75% of us are atheist or agnostic, but 100% of us believe God gave us this land.

No it is not Irrelevant, it is the root cause of conflict that has been going on in the area since man first threw a rock at another man and the principle that has been set by wave after wave of conquerer and conquered. We cannot reasonably expect motivated and resourceful cultures to forgo their history and heritage.

A two state solution would probably be the best chance for peace in light of everything but both sides see it as unacceptable so they revert to the tried and true method, to claim one side has more moral legitimacy over the other is absurd.

You mention one person – thousands have an opposing view AND many have had peer reviewed articles published in that prestigious journal, or others like Science and Nature. I have just finished reading the reprinted David and Goliath by Karam, and am now starting the McNeish book.

Any thoughs on his guilt or innocence?

..and to make even more profits for the ‘sirs’ of the alcohol-pushing industry…

(and i repeat…labour are as much ‘owned’ by those booze/drug-pushers…as national..)

..they can push their ‘the only way you are a man..is if you love getting bladdered/pissed…to teenagers..

to get them hooked…

Luc,

Just to confirm, you are coming back to us aren’t you, detailing the thorough investigation that the NAS undertook prior to its press release?

I mean, if it turned out that they didn’t perform such an investigation, and that in fact only a tiny subset of the NAS membership agreed to this position, then you’d look a bit foolish, wouldn’t you.

So, please do provide details of the NAS investigation of all the evidence which led up to this press release, and let us know what proportion of the NAS membership agreed to it.

… and signed by 255 members of the National Academy of Sciences…

.. in protest of the “recent assaults on climate science and, more disturbingly, on climate scientists by climate change deniers.”

The letter was almost uniformly ignored by major media outlets…”

Yea that seems like the conclusion the book is drawing DPF, about half way through.

Karam’s book seemed to highlight a huge amount of forensics and evidence gathering the police fucked up, but didn’t seem to conclusively rebut the more compelling evidence (what if the dog transferred blood etc, and other implausbile possiblities).

Bain should still be in jail in my opinion, I would love to have been a fly on the wall in the jury room…

Philu There is no drinking age,If you are under 18 you can not drink on licenced premises or purchase alcohol from an on licence, In my experience in the hospitality business there is a percentage of people that cannot handle the liquor.age has nothing to do with it.

Sure there has been a bit of invective thrown around but the quality of debate thrown round (belief systems to the side for a mo) between Luc vs the rest has been fantastic. Have read this thread this morning (sans philu – thanks RIP) and enjoyed every minute.

Question for Luc: How would you feel if the government legislated on what you are allowed to say on this website? Would you feel aggrieved?
