I was shocked, I looked around to see if the other guys were as taken aback as I was, I expected at least one of them to say “hang on a minute”, but no, every one of them agreed with the comment.
On other occasions I would be in the boozer to watch a super 14 game, often the Crusaders would be playing, if they were the pub would be full, during play the ball could be dropped by any of the white players and not much would be said, however, if Vunibaka dropped the ball a chorus of “you stupid black bastard” would ring out.
I repeat, while I do not doubt that the three darkie rule is not OFFICIAL policy I am equally certain that it is the unofficial policy of the Crusaders and Canterbury rugby management.

As for Canterbury, even if they did use fewer Pacific Island players than other teams, the reason would not necessarily be racist. For example, one could consider the style of rugby Canterbury plays and how players need to fit into the team. In my view, Canterbury has over the years played a very goal-oriented, solid, consistent, methodically planned and team-centric style of rugby. (By team-centric, I mean they have diminished the focus on a few outstanding star players.)
How could this potentially work against incorporating Pacific Islanders into the team? (I will note I don’t believe they have a policy against incorporating Pacific Islanders, but I digress.) It has been said for quite some time that Pacific Islanders bring a certain flair to the game. How is this flair typically expressed? Often, it is expressed in broken-play or outside the gameplan. Often it is expressed in premising the individual over the team, i.e. stepping on the outside instead of passing to the inside man who could score much more easily. It is often try-focused rather than point-focused. These facets of play seem to run against the Canterbury ethos.
They may not have the most brilliant players, and they may have some very overrated players, but the players they do have are chosen not only for their individual sparks of brilliance but also for what they bring to the balance and composition of what makes a winning team. They may not win pretty, but as the most successful and consistent of the New Zealand franchises, they do win and that is what matters most.

Christchurch has always been a real cracka of a town. I think its only got 3% polynesian population ? It does pride itself on producing and rewarding local talent in all fields of endeavour though. The Maori team is selected on the players traditional and indigenous ties to the land through ancestry/whakapapa. The mana is what they bring as individuals and representative of their iwi and add to the cultural heritage. Maori arent a ‘race’ anymore than Pasifikans are.
The allblacks are the NZ residents team, not even indigenous and not even eligible to NZers outside of NZ.

I understand your point, there’s got to be a threshold and we might all set it differently. My point is that when an issue like this gathers momentum, it can be appropriate for the PM to comment. In this case, I think the PMs comments were measured and appropriate. Haden’s a RWC ambassador, McCully’s the Minister, he should tell Haden to stop being a dork… not that I think it’s within Haden’s capacity frankly.

That’s a fair call IV2. As an aside, over the last decade or so I’ve noticed PM’s increasingly wading into commentary on all sorts of daily events that really don’t demand their attention.
Perhaps their eagerness to grace us with their glorious presences on the telly is clouding their understanding of the difference between governance vs management.

Haden and Co. are the ones who are racist on this issue, IMHO. The implied corollary to what Haden and Co. say about the Crusaders, easily the country’s most successful regional rugby team, is that it is successful because it restricts the number of non-white players. This, of course, is nonsense and is untrue. The Crusaders don’t restrict the number of non-white players. The Crusaders are good because of their strategy, their integrity, their training, and their far-sightedness. They have turned into top players non-white footballers who had been sidelined in the north.
You have to wonder whether the whole imbroglio has been sparked by players’ agents in Auckland keen to foist more northerners (that is, their clients) on the southerners.

Well a Tongan friend of mine who has been working along with the management at the Crusaders’ Academy for the last 5 years or so to scout & recruit polynesian players into the academy. A training environment where they develop polynesian players so they have a better chance to graduate into the Crusader Super 14 team.

Not for one moment am I suggesting (nor Haden it seems) that there is an official policy of three “darkies”, however, the management of the Crusaders and Canterbury know full well that a team stacked full of PI players would drive their fans away in their droves.
For my sins I lived in Crimechurch for five long years, as usual with Cantabs they define themselves through their rugby team, I guess that comes from having very little else to cheer about.
Anyway, on more than one occasion I cam across blatant racism from their fans, one particular instance has always stuck in my mind, one Saturday afternoon I popped into the local boozer for a couple of pints of God’s nectar (Guinness) while I was there I struck up a conversation with a few of the locals, all of whom are rabid Canterbury fans, as usual they started teasing me about the Hurricanes latest loss, this type of good natured banter was normal, I enjoyed it until one chap (who in ever other sense was a decent bloke) came out with this little pearler….”you know Bruv, the problem with your team (the Hurricanes) is that they have too many niggers in the side”.
I was shocked, I looked around to see if the other guys were as taken aback as I was, I expected at least one of them to say “hang on a minute”, but no, every one of them agreed with the comment.
On other occasions I would be in the boozer to watch a super 14 game, often the Crusaders would be playing, if they were the pub would be full, during play the ball could be dropped by any of the white players and not much would be said, however, if Vunibaka dropped the ball a chorus of “you stupid black bastard” would ring out.
I repeat, while I do not doubt that the three darkie rule is not OFFICIAL policy I am equally certain that it is the unofficial policy of the Crusaders and Canterbury rugby management.

What you cannot deny is that Canterbury and Crimechurch in particular have far more than any other area in NZ.

As for Canterbury, even if they did use fewer Pacific Island players than other teams, the reason would not necessarily be racist. For example, one could consider the style of rugby Canterbury plays and how players need to fit into the team. In my view, Canterbury has over the years played a very goal-oriented, solid, consistent, methodically planned and team-centric style of rugby. (By team-centric, I mean they have diminished the focus on a few outstanding star players.)
How could this potentially work against incorporating Pacific Islanders into the team? (I will note I don’t believe they have a policy against incorporating Pacific Islanders, but I digress.) It has been said for quite some time that Pacific Islanders bring a certain flair to the game. How is this flair typically expressed? Often, it is expressed in broken-play or outside the gameplan. Often it is expressed in premising the individual over the team, i.e. stepping on the outside instead of passing to the inside man who could score much more easily. It is often try-focused rather than point-focused. These facets of play seem to run against the Canterbury ethos.
They may not have the most brilliant players, and they may have some very overrated players, but the players they do have are chosen not only for their individual sparks of brilliance but also for what they bring to the balance and composition of what makes a winning team. They may not win pretty, but as the most successful and consistent of the New Zealand franchises, they do win and that is what matters most.

Hate to say it but I think John Key does have some questions to answer on the trust issue.
But the way I look at it is that Labour want to smear Key as he has been successful. It is not illegal what he has done, but maybe due process needs to be seen to be done.

The Maori team is selected on the players traditional and indigenous ties to the land through ancestry/whakapapa. The mana is what they bring as individuals and representative of their iwi and add to the cultural heritage. Maori arent a ‘race’ anymore than Pasifikans are.
The allblacks are the NZ residents team, not even indigenous and not even eligible to NZers outside of NZ.

I understand your point, there’s got to be a threshold and we might all set it differently. My point is that when an issue like this gathers momentum, it can be appropriate for the PM to comment. In this case, I think the PMs comments were measured and appropriate. Haden’s a RWC ambassador, McCully’s the Minister, he should tell Haden to stop being a dork… not that I think it’s within Haden’s capacity frankly.

What a strange mob is emerging to back Andy Haden on his claims about the Crusaders. Mad, lost, idle Philu sides with Big Bruv here on Kiwiblog. On TTVNZ1′s Close Up, Sainsbury’s stand in, today with almost bouffant hair, was joined by a sports commentator with a mild but distracting resemblance to the famous word smith Oscar Wilde in physique and in hair and skin colour. They batted for Haden’s selection.
The proportion of Pacific Islanders in the Crusaders is higher than the proportion of Pacific Islanders in the upper South Island, the home base of the Crusaders. The proportion of Pacific Island and Maori players in the Crusaders is higher than the proportion of these ethnic groups in the upper South Island population. Though with the high rate of intermarriage in the south (at least one Ngai Tahu leader is fair headed with blue eyes), differentiating Maori from Pakeha becomes increasingly difficult and meaningless.
Haden and Co. are the ones who are racist on this issue, IMHO. The implied corollary to what Haden and Co. say about the Crusaders, easily the country’s most successful regional rugby team, is that it is successful because it restricts the number of non-white players. This, of course, is nonsense and is untrue. The Crusaders don’t restrict the number of non-white players. The Crusaders are good because of their strategy, their integrity, their training, and their far-sightedness. They have turned into top players non-white footballers who had been sidelined in the north.
You have to wonder whether the whole imbroglio has been sparked by players’ agents in Auckland keen to foist more northerners (that is, their clients) on the southerners.
