Found this in an interesting book I’m reading. A fitting description of today’s New Zealand:
“That is another feature of the paternalistic welfare state – that the paternalists, the rulers, come to regard the electorate as children, to be seen but not heard. Hence the ever-widening gulf between a remote disconnected political establishment and a population with a growing list of concerns its leaders refuse to discuss”.
what with Chris Laidlaw on Radio Left Wing, Rod Oram and Finlay Macdonald in the Left Wing SST, my morning is usually spoilt (as if I would listen any more, or read the other two twits – other than the first lines but I know what to expect – )
Were they born miserable, or has it just grown up with them?. I would much prefer to listen to Trotter – he has some brains and sometimes has a useful contribution to make.
BUT
Well Done the All White team – a great result – made my morning
Now the UK Royal Society aims “to provide the public with a clear indication of what is known about the climate system, what we think we know about it and, just as importantly, the aspects we still do not understand very well.”
My question: So why didn’t the IPCC tell us all that in the beginning? Instead, we’ve been bombarded with propaganda, supported by dishonest scientists on their payroll, who have cooked the data to support the UN’s political agenda.
The most prestigious group of scientists in the country was forced to act after fellows complained that doubts over man made global warming were not being communicated to the public.
Does anyone else notice that those ‘STREPSILS + anaesthetic’ don’t seem to have the anaesthetic anymore? At least, not the new box I opened today (or the last few in the old box). It’s supposed to make your throat numb, but it’s not anymore.
Maybe they’ve taken that out to save money and hope that no one notices.
“Rod Oram and Finlay Macdonald in the Left Wing SST,”
You shouldn’t waste your time reading that hopeless rag. Oram was (and is) a well-known Clark’s disciple, and one of her favourite “business” advisors. He’s completely barmy when comes to left-leaning economic ideas, who pines for a socialist paradise.
Viking2, how do you dare to criticise the IPCC or any other bogus” scientific” organisation?
What would Nick Smith do without their support? How would Key justify the ETS?
This is the biggest non-story of the day, just repeating a blog post and comments from Gotcha??
Its a bit more than a “non story”, as whaleoil fights his insurer. I imagine that repeating the blog posts were easier than getting a comment from Slater.
Part of me rejoices that the bastard is sufferring, part of me feels his hurt as I too have been victim of an insurers mis treatment and am a depressive, although not on his scale.
So fuck you whaleoil for the hurt you caused others, and I hope you recover soon and beat the insurer, you poor bastard.
At shop this morning heard woman bleating about the price of dairy and how its going to go through the roof, she said it was criminal.
Give me a bloody break, the local farmers have come through the worst drought for years here, all at extra cost which the funded by going to the bank, as they should.
But to complain about income which the are at this point “indicated to recieve” is a short sighted bitching attitude that sickens me.
Where was she when the price dropped from $ 7.00 to $4 .20, didnt see her refusing to pay more for her butter, didnt hear her ringing up saying its bloodyn go to have cheap dairy ,thanks you guys.
Farmers are the ones carrying us at the moment ,and will in the future i hope they get $15.00

Mental illness – new hope?
Not often enough do we see an idea or invention that has the potential to solve contemporary problems. This might be one however given that most of the growth in invalid’s and sickness benefits is from psychological and psychiatric conditions which the health system does not seem to have the capacity to treat.
Mentally ill Australians are increasingly being diagnosed and treated online in virtual psychiatric clinics, without ever seeing a doctor.
Patients suffering from depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder are being assessed by computer and given ”e-prescriptions” for online counselling courses instead of medication or treatment sessions with a psychologist or psychiatrist. Doctors who provide e-therapy say it produces better results than face-to-face treatment but at a fraction of the cost…
I began reading with skepticism but finished with optimisim;
More than 360 doctors across Australia are also using a program developed by the University of New South Wales and St Vincent’s Hospital’s Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression in Sydney, which allows GPs and psychologists to refer patients with mental health issues for online treatment by buying a $100 pad of 20 e-prescriptions for 20 patients, each providing a six-week counselling course.
The federal government has trialled the program in New South Wales and, with funding extended until June next year, it is expected to be introduced in rural communities nationally.
The program allows people to record their emotions with electronic mood monitors that are tracked by their doctor, who can intervene if they feel extra support is needed.
It has become the hospital’s treatment of choice for people with anxiety disorders, and those behind the program are now in discussion with the United States and New Zealand governments which want to replicate it. Gavin Andrews, who heads the online research unit clinic, said more than 2000 patients had been treated and the program had been found to be 13 times more cost effective than face-to-face treatment.
”For every two people you treat, you get one fully better and they stay better for six months. When you’re treating depression with antidepressants you get one better for every five patients you treat and for cognitive behavioural therapy you treat four and you get one fully better … The results are quite staggering.”
The documents revealed a year after King was recruited as the face of pork in New Zealand, officials became nervous when the comedian left an obscene phone message for the writers of Eating Media Lunch after they lampooned his show Mike King Live.
King said, in part of the expletive-filled message: “You have f***** with the wrong person, you f****** jumped up little s*** head”.
NZ Pork chief executive Sam McIvor confirmed that “death, disability and disgrace” insurance was sought as a direct result of the adverse publicity from this incident.
The policy cost NZ Pork $29,000 a year, but insurers refused to cover obscene phone calls under the “disgrace” portion of the policy.
A representative of underwriters Marsh wrote in December 2003: “The NZ Pork industry is aware at the time of buying the insurance that Mike King is liable to make similar outbursts in the future.”
King said, in hindsight, insuring against the possibility of disgrace was a wise move by his former employers: “I was pretty out there in those days.”
So let’s get this straight. Someone is kind enough to offer someone else $0.5m+ and the recipient thinks it was a wise move for the employer to insure themselves just in case it all went a bit south.
I predict that Mike King votes for the Green Party.
big bruv May 30th, 2010 at 10:16 am – but on yesterday’s GD,
Kris
You’re not for real are you?
In 2010 nobody could be that small minded, I have long suspected that you are a left wing troll who has a huge problem with religion.
Why not leave those who want to worship in peace, IMHO they are barking mad but at least I do not see any need to abuse them (unless they start to tell me how to live my life)
Seriously Kris, the joke is wearing a little thin.
Yep, entirely for real.
And some things DON’T change, much like my view that sodomites are perverse and corrupt, no matter what the current law may say – I think many Christians and non-C share my view in this regard. I only have a problem with ‘religion’ when it steps outside of biblical New Testament teaching. I will continue to challenge those I believe to wear a veneer of Christianity, but who deny the veracity of biblical truth by their life and comments. And I agree; some are ‘barking mad’. And while I may not “tell [you] how to live [your] life”, no doubt if I challenge your sin then you will interpret it that I am. Did Christ not do the same when He said, “Go, and sin no more” ?
And I never joke about biblical truths, and the eternal destiny of those who reject the offer of salvation through Christ in this life. (rant over)

Balls!
That some farmers have been hurt by the drought (in some parts of the country) just demonstrates that they are not self sufficient and have not used serious profits of days gone to ensure they can farm in any conditions or have been silly in their investments – including their own farms.
Dairy farmers in particular take, free of charge, what belongs to us all (rain water that falls above their places and happens to flow through or near their property) and give nothing in return.
I have no problem with people making a bloody good living, earning fortunes on the way if they can but not at the expense of others who suffer because of bloody cow cocky selfishness.
Phool, You’d be the last person to be pointing the finger. Check how many of your comments over the weekend are making personal attacks on everyone who does not share your world view.

I think you actually replied to (possibly) KrazyKiwi yesterday, but it wasn’t me. My first name really is ‘Kris’. But I’ve just checked my gmail account (set up today) and have now received 2 emails from you today – so it’s all good.
On the note of my comments yesterday about Peter Ellis, does anybody know how the appeal to the Privy Council is still going? I can’t find any answers on his website, or Wikipedia. Sounds like it was first signalled years ago.
What is happening? Can he not get legal aid or something?
Viking2, automated computer based diagnostic tools have existed for over 3 decades now, but its adoption has increased over recent years.
The first automated computer medical expert system developed was from Stanford University in the early 1970s, called Mycin. In tests, the Mycin software outperformed members of the Stanford medical school faculty, ie, the software’s recommendations for correct treatments scored higher. The software never went commercial because some observers raised ethical and legal issues related to the use of computers in medicine — if a program gives the wrong diagnosis or recommends the wrong therapy, who should be held responsible?
Automated CDSS (clinical decision support system) will become pervasive in medicine in the near future, because the researches in this domain is accelerating and they’re available from various computing journals, but the Artificial Intelligence in Medicine journal is the dominant one. We should anticipate that in the near future, HAL 9000 type CDSS will be there in our clinics, hospitals to help human doctors and take off some of the workload by doing the diagnosis & giving prescriptions to patients. It is a bit scary but it will definitely happen.
Does anyone else notice that those ‘STREPSILS + anaesthetic’ don’t seem to have the anaesthetic anymore
..that because fucktard p-addicts like philwhore melt them down and cook with ‘em eh Phil ya drop kick. They took out all the good stuff…ya better to just suck on a lemon and honey drink now.

Heh. Even better – I can put you onto someone who has zero charges, and has a free direct hotline available 24-7. He helps with mental health and all other issues which life may present to us.
sorry that the left-wingers didn’t engage with you at the Bloggers night philu man, but it may have been because they were worried that you would rob them man .. heyyyyyyyyyyy
Is it just me – or does Whaleoil increasingly sound like Howard Beale from “Network”? Judging by the recent tone of his blog, there is no doubting that he is “as mad as hell” – but in this instance I am the one choosing not to take it any more.
Those of you who know Whaleoil personally (I do not) – yet still encourage him on – seem no better than the “mates” who repeatedly let their friend drive home drunk. Whilst he is responsibile for his actions in choosing to drink and drive – so are you for yours for choosing to let him drive without censure.
I believe strongly in freedom of expression and personal responsibility. But I also believe that reponsibility extends to how we choose to encourage or censure those around us. Continuing to encourage Whaleoil’s downward spiral is a great spectator sport – and morbidly fascinating. However, I for one choose to no longer join in the spectacle. I am surprised to find that there are limits to my stomach for this sort of voyeurism. I will get my kicks elsewhere.
I used to love his blog under the old site, when it was just him.
Don’t know what it is though but lately he has been posting less and less of the political analysis, which he is outsanding at, and just going more for shock value, which IMO isn’t as good reading.
Plus he shares his blog with a couple of fucktards.
But anyway Cam, whatever is going on, hope you get better soon.
what the All Whites (blacks) did (winning) was give them credibility to the Soccer world and make their pool opponents take them a little more seriously. The belief they would taken from the game will help them mentally plus the game time will make them even better. I don’t expect them to win a game during the cup BUT, I would not be surprised if the do.
The ETS fraudsters messrs Key and Smith need to get with the programme. The scientific world is pulling back from heady, unchecked ‘science’ of CAGW alarmists, and global citizens are increasingly pissed at having their eco-conscience’s raped in the name of a subversive political agenda.
Blame economic worries, another freezing winter, or the cascade of scandals emerging from the world’s leading climate-research body, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). But concern over global warming has cooled down dramatically.
:
This is no dispute between objective scientists and crazed flat-earthers. The lines cut through the profession itself. Very few scientists dispute a link between man-made CO2 and global warming. Where it gets fuzzy is the extent and time frame of the effect. One crucial point of contention is climate “sensitivity”—the mathematical formula that translates changes in CO2 production to changes in temperature. In addition, scientists are not sure how to explain a slowdown in the rise of global temperatures that began about a decade ago.
The backlash against climate science is also about the way in which leading scientists allied themselves with politicians and activists to promote their cause. Some of the IPCC’s most-quoted data and recommendations were taken straight out of unchecked activist brochures, newspaper articles, and corporate reports—including claims of plummeting crop yields in Africa and the rising costs of warming-related natural disasters, both of which have been refuted by academic studies.
Just as damaging, many climate scientists have responded to critiques by questioning the integrity of their critics, rather than by supplying data and reasoned arguments. When other researchers aired doubt about the IPCC’s prediction that Himalayan glaciers will melt by 2035, the IPCC’s powerful chief, Rajendra Pachauri, trashed their work as “voodoo science.” Even today, after dozens of IPCC exaggerations have surfaced, leading climate officials like U.N. Environment Program chief Achim Steiner and Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research head Joachim Schellnhuber continue to tar-brush critics as “anti-Enlightenment” and engaging in “witch hunts.”
Stunning? It was a game with nothing hingeing on the result – wait until the real game starts before gloating.
LRO – You little ray of sunshine. Who’s gloating? Our lads beat the world’s #15 ranked football team. None of the players on either side turned up for a picnic.
Are you ever happy about anything, or did Marx direct such misery in perpetuity?
After much talk about the UK election that being first the Conservatives had the moral high ground to form a government.
Contrast this with the latest election in the Czech Republic where the opposition Social Democrats won more seats that any other party. However they conceded the election to the parties that came 2nd, 3rd and 5th.
It seems some countries understand the difference between winning the most seats and having a majority more than others
@Inky the Red: The failure to make that distinction frustrated me immensely. The people in the UK did not vote for any single party to have power. They voted for coalition government.
I more think of myself as a messenger of what God says about sin, and the consequences of that sin, in His word. Perhaps if you feel challenged then it is the Holy Spirit convicting you. My motives in sharing are actually with your best interests at heart. It is your prerogative, of course, to ignore my comments.
I actually think much of what we see around us; whether it’s things (moral decline, etc) in our society, our politics, or ‘natural’ events in the world, are a result of either us casting off our Judeo-Christian heritage, or else God trying to get our attention. Much of what I comment about on this blog is generally slanted in one of the above ways. And whether someone shares my faith or not, often the things that concern most of us here are, generally, pretty similar.
And Nick, no offence taken. More often than not my religious comments are in response to being challenged by others (eg Big Bruv above), or, as I just said, commenting on the moral decline, bad laws, bad policies, etc within our society/world.
the part of McCarten’s diatribe that I liked most was “then ensure there’s a huge dollop of money GIVEN BACK to our richer citizens” (I added the capitals) .. Does Mad Matt realise what he wrote???????? 2 aspects:
1/ given BACK suggests it was theirs all along and was therefore taken.
2/ it reality, it wasn’t (or isn’t going to be) given back, it means it won’t be taken in the 1st place.
Kris, there’s no argument the Bible calls homosexuality an abomination but as you can see, it also lists lots of other things likewise, such as Egyptians and Hebrews eating bread together.
reid, Kris is a new testament xian, so ignores the OT, UNLESS there is something there to confirm his prejuudices. He doesn’t care about Africans and Hebrews eating together, just men have congress together.
Is it true that you were the Republican Party candidate for Christchurch Central at the last election? If so, you only received five votes (or four if we assume you voted for yourself). I’m wondering if that bodes well for your mayoral campaign…
Sorry to disappoint you Nomestradamus, but I have never put myself forward to be elected by any political party. Go back and do some knitting you nosey parker idiot. Gawd people have odd fixations on this blog. Get a life and stop fucking worrying about me.
I distinctly recall visiting the Republican Party website (since taken down – but perhaps an expert Google cache search will locate it) and seeing them mention you as the Christchurch Central candidate. Surely there can’t be two of you in Christchurch?
Heh, Nigel Latta suggests locking kids in their bedroom and Sue Bradford says it could cause psychological damage:
“Locking children up when you are angry, frustrated or just sad could really damage the children psychologically and cause all sorts of problems later,” Bradford said. http://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/3755124/Lock-up-your-naughty-kids-expert
I don’t know that Latte deserves the label of ‘expert’, and I also doubt the wisdom of taking advice about mental health from Bradford. We’ve got to stop letting the lunatics run the asylum.
As I read this email from One Law for all in the UK I couldn’t help wondering whether there would be any ploughshares for all people amongst them?
One Law for All and Iran Solidarity call on people everywhere to join the 20 June protest in London or to organise rallies or acts of solidarity in various cities across the globe to mark the day when 27-year-old Neda Agha-Soltan was shot dead by the Islamic regime of Iran’s security forces at a protest in Tehran. Her demand for freedom in the face of all-out repression has made her a symbol of people everywhere.
2. In Iran over 130 offences are punishable with death under Sharia law including: Sex crimes like adultery and homosexuality; crimes against the state and religion like enmity against God, corruption on earth, apostasy, heresy and blasphemy and acts prohibited under Sharia law such as a third conviction of drinking alcohol, morality crimes like distribution of obscene/pornographic audio-visual materials, public order crimes, and drug-related offences, including for possession. Support the ‘I would be Executed in Iran if I did this…’ Facebook page by clicking that you like it here: http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?topic=12&uid=107261949318147#!/pages/I-would-be-executed-in-Iran-if-I-did-this/107261949318147?ref=ts
Actually I suggest you fuck off. I distinctly remember seeing your name on the Republican Party website (as I checked at the time) and their policies on various issues were rather similar to your own. Hoist by your own petard, me thinks
@RightNow: This is a bizarre article. I have a number of problems with it.
1) Sue Bradford’s interpretation: Looking at the initial advice from Latta, it did not suggest a particular state of mind for the parent. In his further comment on it, he suggested the parent may get stressed out if they don’t follow the advice. Bradford inferred from this that when implementing such advice the parent is necessarily “angry, frustrated or just sad”, or was she making a completely unrelated comment? (I would suggest she’s just trying to contribute to hysteria.) Furthermore, time-out is known as a valid technique in disciplining one’s children. What would the architect of the anti-smacking legislation have parents do? Not discipline their children at all?
2) Gardam’s interpretation: The article then has comments from a Barrister, Gardam, who mentions children being locked in small spaces being a form of cruelty and mental violence. Latta suggested putting the children “in their rooms”. The small spaces comment is unwarranted and a distortion. If children’s rooms are small enough spaces to be a form of cruelty and mental violence when locked then they are too small, period.
I don’t know if Latta qualifies as an expert either, but the reactions and reportage of this qualify as fairly ridiculous.
I’m gonna give Matt McMoron credit: he’s a twat, but he makes me consistently angry whenever I expose myself to his muck. I’m not even as angry about Barky anymore. Good job.
“I don’t know that Latte deserves the label of ‘expert’”
He’s on the way to becoming one. His background is counselling children who commit sex crimes. He’s obviously moved into others areas now but that’s where he comes from.
So he’s got knowledge of how to deal with some of most extreme cases and I guess that helps when he’s dealing with normal people or normies as we like to call ourselves.
I was pretty impressed with what Sophie Elliot’s mother had to say about him on a doco I saw. He’d worked with her for two years and she couldn’t say enough about him.
Now it looks like I’ll have to head back up there and cull out all the black ones to fit in with Aunties racist theories as discussed on the next post.
Kris, there’s no argument the Bible calls homosexuality an abomination but as you can see, it also lists lots of other things likewise, such as Egyptians and Hebrews eating bread together.
How about condemning them, sometime.
LeftRightOut 3:30 pm,
reid, Kris is a new testament xian, so ignores the OT, UNLESS there is something there to confirm his prejuudices. He doesn’t care about Africans and Hebrews eating together, just men have congress together.
Actually, Reid, LRO os closer to the truth than you might think.
Homosexuality is condemned in both the Old and New Testaments, whereas “Egyptians and Hebrews eating bread together”, as mentioned in Genesis, is actually speaking from the Egyptian perspective, not the Hebrew, and in no way, shape, or form translates to a NT requirement:
Gen 43:32 And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.
Of course eating pork was also condemned in the OT for the Jews, and God also required the Jews to sacrifice animals for their sins – neither of these two Jewish OT requirements are restipulated in the NT for Christians under the new covenant.
But, in general, I do try to be an ‘equal opportunity’ condemner of those things which carry over into NT teaching – Paul is ‘the man’ in that respect – most liberal Christians really hate Paul.
And I agree with you in one sense, Reid, it is extremely important to “rightly divide” God’s word. Many people wrongly apply OT Jewish requirements to NT Christians (eg Jewish dietry laws, for example), and end up getting themselves in a power of trouble. But as a general rule, unless something from the OT is restipulated in the NT then it isn’t for Christians who are under the new (better) covenant – Grace versus Law; Internal Change versus External Requirements.
Congratulations to the All White’s, it may have been a friendly but still a great achievement to beat the 15th ranked team.
Talking about football, hasn’t big money made a total horses arse of the beautiful game? From Gillett and Hicks at my club, Liverpool FC to the Glazers at Utd they have come close to wrecking the clubs. Good to see a bit of groundswell from the fans to take back control.
PRIME 5.30 NEWS has just suggested food prices in supermarkets may increase by 2% due to power ETS increases but had a credibility hiccup saying GST would rise by 1.5%.
However if the suggestion regarding the pass-on of increases may be 2% is roughly correct, that, plus the GST, will see basics up 4.5% which must about eliminate the tax breaks.
Depends on your disposable income Yvette. People struggling will still struggle no matter how you design the finite variables. What needs to happen IMO is for those people who are struggling to have an explanation in precise, easy steps tailored to their situation, as to what they need to do to work themselves into comfortable middle-class.
Unfortunately, it would mean ditching all the appalling and self-perpetuating envy-bullshit which the left pours petrol on to create itself a market, so it’s not going to happen in a hurry.
Condemn the sin if you wish, but given the belief in God-given free will don’t condemn the legalisation or failure to make illegal that which you believe to be immoral but which does not harm those other than those engaging in the practice/s?
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone, Kris.
Surely you’re not suggesting we should ignore sin in society?!
I mean seriously, if I said that it is wrong to murder am I being judgemental? Or, for that matter, that adultery is wrong, or to lust, or to covet, or to lie, or bear false witness … ?
Or that homosexuality is wrong?
No one is ‘casting stones’, but remember what Christ’s reply was to the woman caught in adultery, and who was about to be stoned by the crowd:
Joh 8:5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
…
Joh 8:7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
…
Joh 8:10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
Joh 8:11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
Notice the “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more” – while Christ didn’t condemn her either, He certainly made it clear that she should not continue in her sin. Do you understand the difference? Do you see what Christ is saying?
Surely the job of the Christian is to, as did Christ, tell people to “go, and sin no more”.
I’m really struggling to see whether you’re serious, or whether you’re playing devil’s advocate – I mean this is pretty fundamental stuff for those in Christ, Reid.
@reid
“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”
The passage in the bible where that quote comes from is not in all manuscripts. It’s a point of contention as to whether it should be included or not. Lol!
Looks like the US Federal Reserve might get audited yet, even after Senator Ron Paul’s original proposal was watered down so much it became meaningless. This will be a set of books worth looking at.
Condemn the sin if you wish, but given the belief in God-given free will don’t condemn the legalisation or failure to make illegal that which you believe to be immoral but which does not harm those other than those engaging in the practice/s?
“Harm” is such a relative term, Jive.
And so called “God-given free will” has definite boundaries which God has made abundantly clear. Our laws used to pretty much acknowledge this fact – but not any more, sadly, and at the cost of an increasingly degrading and morally corrupt society.
Kris, my issue with people who insist on condemning homosexuality based on the Bible is that the argument’s logic hinges on the proposition that sexuality is a choice. Correct me if I’m wrong but the summarised version is:
The Bible has several passages that condemn homosexuality.
Given that, I the faithful believer condemn it as sin.
G-d instructs us to love others and forgive their sins.
Therefore I condemn the sin but forgive the sinner.
A sin by definition is not something involuntary. The sinner has a choice. If they don’t have a choice it’s not a sin because they can’t prevent it even if they wanted to.
That’s about it, isn’t it.
So I submit to you that sexuality is not a free choice that can be influenced by will power.
Continually, Johnboy.
How can one not despair when the evidence of sin confronts us on a daily basis? – those murdered, raped, sexually abused, tortured, hated, … those wretches driven to suicide, those that drink themselves to death, those that try to find oblivion through drugs, those driven to prostitution, those that try to find gratification through a hedonistic lifestyle but who only end up more unhappy and more unfulfilled …
… and ultimately I despair for those that will go into a Christless eternity.
Sometimes I even despair for you, Johnboy – just as I know God does.
Don’t despair Kris! Embrace universalism! My friend did. She couldn’t reconcile an omnibenevolent, omnipotent and omniscient god to the concept of Hell. Is Hell mentioned in the New Testament? Haven’t read the Bible in a while.
Kris, my issue with people who insist on condemning homosexuality based on the Bible is that the argument’s logic hinges on the proposition that sexuality is a choice.
…
So I submit to you that sexuality is not a free choice that can be influenced by will power.
Sexuality is not a choice IMO – we are either male or female; heterosexual. But even if that were not the case, any sexual expression is condemned outside of biblical marriage – whether you be heterosexual or otherwise. Remember, God condemns fornication just as strongly as homsexual acts.
God never condemns us for something outside of our control. The fact that He condemns homosexuality, and fornication for that matter, in both the Old and New Testaments reveals that participating in homosexual sex is very much a choice the individual makes – just as is the choice to commit fornication. And in both cases these are “free choice[s]“, and an expression of the individual’s “will power”.
God will judge each of us for rejecting His will, and imposing our own – and each will be without excuse – especially those who have heard the gospe messagel.
And as an after thought; you could use your rationale to justify the pedophile’s choice to participate in underage sex – a very slippery slope indeed!
“reconcile an omnibenevolent, omnipotent and omniscient god to the concept of Hell”
It’s quite easy. All you have to understand is that life is a battle between us and them. It always has been and will continue that way until it doesn’t anymore. That’s all you have to know.
Kris sorry mate but I don’t buy your suggested connexion between the fact G-d condemns it and the conclusion that therefore it is in fact a choice.
See what worries me Kris is that you appear to be suggesting that not only gay people should stop making love but also that all fornication should cease forthwith.
Don’t despair Kris! Embrace universalism! My friend did. She couldn’t reconcile an omnibenevolent, omnipotent and omniscient god to the concept of Hell. Is Hell mentioned in the New Testament? Haven’t read the Bible in a while.
[Yes, hell (the Lake of Fire) is in the NT]
Of course the reason why Christ came and died for our sins was so that we might not have to spend an eternity suffering for our sins ourself. God’s perfect love is contained in Christ’s death on the cross on our behalf. The other side of the coin, though, is that God has given us free will – the ability to choose to either accept or reject His payment for our sin.
Similarly, we cannot love God unless we choose to do so. This was God’s dilemma; He gave us the ability to choose to love Him, but as a consequence we can ALSO choose to not love Him; to reject both His love and His offer of salvation. Sadly, many choose to reject Him, and as a consequence ‘choose’ to spend eternity separated from God. The only place where God’s presence is not is in hell (the Lake of Fire), and therefore this is the only place where Christ rejectors CAN spend eternity.
The choice really is our own.
[I'm off for the evening - so I'll bid you all goodnight]
@Reid: Yes, I thought the English version had used Hell as a catch-all for a few phrases. I do wonder how apologists are able to discern what is meant to be metaphor in the Bible. As far as I can tell, it’s pick what fits with one’s own prejudices and consider the rest metaphor.
See what worries me Kris is that you appear to be suggesting that not only gay people should stop making love but also that all fornication should cease forthwith.
It’s not MY suggestion, but rather God’s command to abstain from ALL sex outside of (biblical) marriage.
Once we start to rationalise God’s word, and start to rely on our own opinions, where does it all stop? – anything can be justified; and isn’t that exactly what society has been doing? Is it not the job of Christians to stand against this tide of Godlessness overtaking our society? And if not us, then who?
“Once we start to rationalise God’s word, and start to rely on our own opinions, where does it all stop?”
So hope you’re getting the appropriate anti-leprosy treatments, Kris and certainly hoping your wife and daughters adhere to the recommended procedure during menstruation.
” As far as I can tell, it’s pick what fits with one’s own prejudices and consider the rest metaphor.”
How many times have you read it from cover-to-cover, JiveKitty?
Each time you do, other layers of the onion unfold. Sure you can, as most do, read themes, and I recommend that as well. But reading it from cover to cover from Genesis 1:1 to Revelations 21:22 gives you a context for those themes bar none.
It’s the best book in the world.
Someone said once if they had to be marooned with two books, they’d choose the Bible and Shakespeare, because there’s more going on in those two than any person is ever going to uncover in their lifetime.
Reid if you have read the Bible cover to cover then you should know that the legal requirements you just mentioned are laws pertaining to the Old Covenant (the Jewish one) and not to the New Covenant (the Christian one), so Kris has no need to follow them.
Shit, is that wanker really gone? the dog botherer one? Fucking General Debate and all you get is masterbate self centered god bible bullshit.
Get a fuckin chatroom or forum, stick it where the global warming sun dont shine
And now for something different, some satire/fun comment. Was on the steam wireless my Mum said, but I got it by email, amazing.
Dear Mum,
Our Scoutmaster told us to write to our parents in case you saw the flood on TV and got worried. We are okay. Only one of our tents and 2 sleeping bags got washed away. Luckily, none of us got drowned because we were all up on the mountain looking for Adam when it happened.
Oh yes, please call Adam’s mother and tell her he is okay. He can’t write because of the cast. I got to ride in one of the search and rescue Jeeps. It was great. We never would have found Adam in the dark if it hadn’t been for the lightning.
Scoutmaster Ted got mad at Adam for going on a hike alone without telling anyone. Adam said he did tell him, but it was during the fire so he probably didn’t hear him. Did you know that if you put gas on a fire, the gas will blow up?
The wet wood didn’t burn, but one of the tents did and also some of our clothes.
Matthew is going to look weird until his hair grows back.
We will be home on Saturday if Scoutmaster Ted gets the bus fixed. It wasn’t his fault about the crash. The brakes worked okay when we left. Scoutmaster Ted said that with a bus that old, you have to expect something to break down; that’s probably why he can’t get insurance.
We think it’s a super bus. He doesn’t care if we get it dirty, and if it’s hot, sometimes he lets us ride on the bumpers. It gets pretty hot with 45 people in a bus made for 24. He let us take turns riding in the trailer until the policeman stopped and talked to us.
Scoutmaster Ted is a neat guy. Don’t worry, he is a good driver. In fact, he is teaching Horace how to drive on the mountain roads where there aren’t any cops. All we ever see up there are huge logging trucks.
This morning all of the guys were diving off the rocks and swimming out to the rapids. Scoutmaster Ted wouldn’t let me because I can’t swim, and Adam was afraid he would sink because of his cast (it’s concrete because we didn’t have any plaster), so he let us take the canoe out. It was great. You can still see some of the trees under the water from the flood.
Scoutmaster Ted isn’t crabby like some scoutmasters. He didn’t even get mad about the life jackets. He has to spend a lot of time working on the bus so we are trying not to cause him any trouble.
Guess what? We have all passed our first aid merit badges. When Andrew dived into the lake and cut his arm, we all got to see how a tourniquet works.
Steve and I threw up, but Scoutmaster Ted said it was probably just food poisoning from the left-over chicken. He said they got sick that way with food they ate in prison. I’m so glad he got out and became our scoutmaster. He said he sure figured out how to get things done better while he was doing his time. By the way, what is a pedal-file?
I have to go now. We are going to town to post our letters and buy some more beer and ammo. Don’t worry about anything. We are fine and tonight it’s my turn to sleep in the Scoutmaster’s tent.
“Reid if you have read the Bible cover to cover then you should know that the legal requirements you just mentioned are laws pertaining to the Old Covenant (the Jewish one) and not to the New Covenant (the Christian one), so Kris has no need to follow them.”
Hagues, if you and/or Kris and/or anyone else want to discuss biblical interpretation re: this matter, can I suggest we do it off-line?
So far I’ve kept it general but if you and/or Kris thinks the nub of the issue lies in specific verses etc then I suggest that’s not of great interest to the wider audience.
It’s also a subject that requires thought and time to consider the various positions – which is not what we have on GD.
reid “Hagues, if you and/or Kris and/or anyone else want to discuss biblical interpretation re: this matter, can I suggest we do it off-line?”
Sweet maybe we should get all those interested together over a pint or two and have a good chin wag. Not in June though I’m extremely busy next month, but after that all good.
It’s alright Reid. I’ve got the wonder, marvel, love and joy that comes with increasing my knowledge and appreciation of the universe. I do wonder though, why the “Lord” and not some other god? How does one know they are right if others from other religions are experiencing pretty much the same things?
By claiming £40,000 in expenses for a room in his boyfriend’s home, David Laws has landed the coalition government with its first crisis
With his neatly parted hair and razor-sharp mind, David Laws swiftly became one of the stars of the coalition government.
The Liberal Democrat chief secretary to the Treasury, charged with identifying where the public sector cuts should fall, relished his new role. His assured performance in the Commons last week won him plaudits on all sides of the house. He fended off criticism from Alistair Darling, the former Labour chancellor, with ease.
Here was glittering proof that the Lib Dems, so long the also-rans of national politics, were fit for government.
Yesterday, however, the reputation that Laws had so carefully nurtured over 16 years in politics was in tatters after it emerged that he had claimed more than £40,000 in parliamentary expenses for renting rooms in properties owned by his secret lover, James Lundie, a political lobbyist.
A desperate apology from Laws followed by a pledge to pay back the money and refer himself to the parliamentary standards committee were not enough to save his job.
It’s certainly one that intrigues me. I think there is more to it than the cultural aspect, i.e. where a person is brought up in a culture with a dominant religion and thus is more likely to adhere to the dominant religion, although I think that is part of the reason in many cases.
@Philu: I have indeed, although that too was a long time ago, so I’ll probably end up viewing that before I deal with reading the Bible again (primarily because of time constraints). Good movie.
big bruv, have you experienced leprosy, imprisonment, a mortgagee sale, bankruptcy, a mad wife or an incurable disease.?Life is about experience, why give someone a hard time when maybe you have not been there or do not want to be there.
have you devil-swervers seen ‘the life of brian’…? that’s where i got all my biblical knowledge from..
Perhaps that’s why you are where you are, phil.
Don’t get me wrong. Life of Brian is great. I’m talking about your selective analysis. Myself, I prefer to keep an open mind. free to consider even radical, fundamental variations.
“have you devil-servers seen the life of brian”? Philly you confuse yourself, your own argument is shot to shit, if, according to your good self, why do you call us devil-servers, this implies there is a God.
Sorry Philly none of the above, the wife is great, well she was the other night………!. How are you taking the news from Fonterra………………? I see we might get a wage rise, not before time either,us poor farmers have to retire debt., shit you can’t make a lot of money if it doesn’t rain.
“hows your life’ I guess Reid would say it’s what you would make of it. If your spend your life hoping or wishing things will get better you probably spend your life like 50% Kiwis, as much as might hurt, you have to try. No one is going to knock on your door and offer you nirvana. Nothing in life is easy and I doubt it’s suppose to be.
Vegan=good
Humanist=vague
Pacifist=naive, impractical and potentially dangerous if/when shit happens
War-mongering=agreed – worst people in the world. National security is however top priority necessary, without compromise.
Hating=never come across it. Societies don’t hate. They’re manipulated into opinions and the worst ones in that respect are the commies, from track record. Does that say anything?
Homophobic=invented. The left can’t stand that conservatives are also human and shock horror, they have families, some of whom turn out to be gay. Proportionate variation of gay people between population segments=undetermined but anecdotal life experience would indicate no variance expected therefore no political bias influence.
Religious/bible-bigots=see above.
You simply set the parameters and perform accordingly.
The questions of who sets and judges them are entirely up to you and in this context I really like the Buddha story where he refuses to accept the insults someone is throwing at him, because it’s his choice as to whether or not he accepts them.
Reid 11.13 , parameters, totally agree. But I do not believe it is possible to set our own parameters, to think otherwise is crazy this is why the world has always had problems and always will have. I don’t think one can honestly set their own parameters and hope to succeed, there has to be something else, yes I’m sorry I’m talking about some sort of moral code. I have also seen some fail not because they had an unreal level, they simply did not believe they could get to any level.
Philip’s [that's philu] always been a joke of a human being. I feel sorry for his kids.

In spite of all his bluster, the guy’s a coward. I feel sorry for his daughter.
Isn’t it nice to see that a pimply immature student cares so much for the young? I’m impressed. Keep up the good work, sonny. And try a little harder, maybe, to stay on topic. I give you a D for the above. By the way, you are the one who turned down an invitation to a public debate between you and I on this issue. Just who is the coward?
From (the aptly named) krazykiwi:
Why does Luc always disappear when he is fisked on account of worship at the climate change altar?
@Luc – Now… we were discussing the veracity of the IPCC’s AR4 report, arguably the gold standard in climate science. A few questions for you:-
1. Do you think it’s acceptable for the IPCC Chair to lie about the contents of that report?
2. Do you think it’s acceptable for the IPCC Chair to personally profit from countries implementing the recommendations in that report?
3. Do you think it’s acceptable for AR4 to contain factual errors?
4. Do you think it’s acceptable for AR4 to cite blog posts, Greenpeace press releases, newspaper stories and the like?
5. Do you think it’s acceptable for the IPCC to alter/adjust scientific content after it had been peer reviewed?
6. Do you think it’s acceptable for the countries of the world to base billions of dollars of spending decisions on a report so rife with errors, omissions while the process of compiling it has been a catalog of conflicts of interest, outright fraud and bare-faced lies?
Umm, KK, in reply to the first, I have a life outside of informing you neanderthals of current trends in thinking circles…I work different hours to most, and my most beautiful toddler keeps me on my toes while my wife is at work. So yes, I am irregular these days, but my email address is always available on request, if you miss me that much.
Now to your repetitive climate change denial delusions…so tiresome, but, hey, I’m watching F1 right now so I need something to fill in the time!
So replying to your points:
1. That’s just a bit harsh. He definitely had an attack of hubris, but he obviously still retains the confidence of the governments who agreed to his appointment. it would only take a nod from a major power for him to be removed. You are overplaying your hand.
2. The IPCC does not make policy recommendations. Read the reports. They publish a “Summary for Policymakers” which merely lays out the science and allows governments to draw their own conclusions.
3. No, but since these reports are compiled by humans, we must expect inevitable human error. No identified error impacts on the overarching scientific message of the reports – that climate change is here, now, and will only accelerate.
4. it doesn’t, except by third person and that was a mistake – see my reply to your point 3.
5. It doesn’t.
6. That’s just all in your fantasies, poor bugger. What billions of spending are you talking about? it’s true China is spending billions, as the only command economy in the top polluters index, but they are doing it in a way that generates an economic benefit for them. It’s a perfect example of how to turn adversity into advantage.
Say, how about you hunt down all those Australian wheat farmers who have lost their land due to the expansion of the Hadley Cells…a permanent change in their climate, ie no rain, that has destroyed their livelihood?

wtf? I wasn’t posting about fund strategies. Although I did pick up that Holroyd’s singularity in philosophy is that they can’t predict the future. Fair enough, for the demented reef fish world he inhabits. I was interested in his views on wider issues eg the future of alternative energy sources without even including climate change considerations. So keep your 101 lectures to yourself and engage in the more serious issues, OK?
And to those of you who don’t know the joke, Fala’s handle is a white supremacist play on Polynesian names – fella full of feaces…think about it.
True to the last word!

When it was established in 1988, the original role of the IPCC was to assess what we know about the climate system.
Short answer: “Not enough to predict what is likely to happen in the future.”
http://www.nzcpr.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=135&p=30368#p30368
Now the UK Royal Society aims “to provide the public with a clear indication of what is known about the climate system, what we think we know about it and, just as importantly, the aspects we still do not understand very well.”
My question: So why didn’t the IPCC tell us all that in the beginning? Instead, we’ve been bombarded with propaganda, supported by dishonest scientists on their payroll, who have cooked the data to support the UN’s political agenda.
Bob.

I began reading with skepticism but finished with optimisim;
When you’re treating depression with antidepressants you get one better for every five patients you treat and for cognitive behavioural therapy you treat four and you get one fully better … The results are quite staggering.”

big bruv May 30th, 2010 at 10:16 am – but on yesterday’s GD,
Yep, entirely for real.

On the note of my comments yesterday about Peter Ellis, does anybody know how the appeal to the Privy Council is still going? I can’t find any answers on his website, or Wikipedia. Sounds like it was first signalled years ago.
What is happening? Can he not get legal aid or something?
Vote:May 30th, 2010 at 12:15 pm

Reid 3:25 pm,
LeftRightOut 3:30 pm,
Actually, Reid, LRO os closer to the truth than you might think.

Notice the “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more” – while Christ didn’t condemn her either, He certainly made it clear that she should not continue in her sin. Do you understand the difference? Do you see what Christ is saying?
Surely the job of the Christian is to, as did Christ, tell people to “go, and sin no more”.
I’m really struggling to see whether you’re serious, or whether you’re playing devil’s advocate – I mean this is pretty fundamental stuff for those in Christ, Reid.

The passage in the bible where that quote comes from is not in all manuscripts. It’s a point of contention as to whether it should be included or not. Lol!

Reid 6:13 pm,
Sexuality is not a choice IMO – we are either male or female; heterosexual.

“Is Hell mentioned in the New Testament?”
Forget about Revelations, did we?
“reconcile an omnibenevolent, omnipotent and omniscient god to the concept of Hell”
It’s quite easy. All you have to understand is that life is a battle between us and them. It always has been and will continue that way until it doesn’t anymore. That’s all you have to know.
Told you it was easy.
Vote:May 30th, 2010 at 6:53 pm
Kris sorry mate but I don’t buy your suggested connexion between the fact G-d condemns it and the conclusion that therefore it is in fact a choice.

Vote:May 30th, 2010 at 7:03 pm
JiveKitty 6:39 pm,
[Yes, hell (the Lake of Fire) is in the NT]

Vote:May 30th, 2010 at 7:12 pm
Reid 6:57 pm,
It’s not MY suggestion, but rather God’s command to abstain from ALL sex outside of (biblical) marriage.
Once we start to rationalise God’s word, and start to rely on our own opinions, where does it all stop? – anything can be justified; and isn’t that exactly what society has been doing? Is it not the job of Christians to stand against this tide of Godlessness overtaking our society? And if not us, then who?

Each time you do, other layers of the onion unfold. Sure you can, as most do, read themes, and I recommend that as well. But reading it from cover to cover from Genesis 1:1 to Revelations 21:22 gives you a context for those themes bar none.
