Solutions to our alcohol problems need to come from within the community. This is a great example:

Athletic Marist Rugby Football Club’s premier team has signed an innovative contract aimed at reducing alcohol-related harm in the Waitaki district.

In a trial this season, members of the premier team have each pledged not to take part in activities which might lead to excessive alcohol consumption, such as player-of-the-day “sculling”.

They also agreed not to supply alcohol to club members under 18, not to act irresponsibly or to drink excessively at functions or gatherings after games.

The players agreed never to drive under the influence of alcohol or ride home with an impaired driver.

They also pledged to look out for their team-mates.

They would ensure their team-mates did not act irresponsibly and that they got home safely.

If they broke the contract, the players would be reprimanded by fellow team-mates.

If any of the players were convicted of drink-driving, they would give $1000 to the Waitaki District Council to be used for road safety projects.

I used to really enjoy the game, and I hated some of the booze culture that often went along with it. Athletic Marist deserve a lot of credit for this move, and I hope others will follow suit- but I expect many rugby clubs do not have the balls to do anything like this.

Why is it that every time a NZ rugby team is beaten it is always the ref’s fault?

“Right from the get-go we were on the wrong side of the referee’s decisions at the breakdown and it didn’t change for the entire 80 minutes,” Blackadder lamented.

Until the All Black go back to shouldering the full responsibility for winning and losing, the world cup is safe from Henry’s shaking hands.

It will take a long time to get rid of the culture that the Clark years brought NZ. Where is was better to play the game and whinge, than it was to win.

When World Views Collide – Sacked for teaching King Lear.

Once again, the Exclusive Brethren are under the spotlight.

NZ Herald:

“Shakespearean tragedy has become high farce, after a Christian high school sacked a teacher for using a “morally defiling” King Lear text in class.

“Suzette Martin, 40, was sacked from the private Westmount School in Kerikeri for teaching her Year 13 students from a modern version of the play.”

A good analysis by MacDoctor:

If you read further into the article, you will find that she was actually sacked for not clearing her teaching material (a modern version of King Lear) with the school board before using it. Not quite the same thing as being sacked for teaching King Lear. The newspaper prints a spark notes version of King Lear, but it is not certain which modern version Ms. Martin was using. Modern versions do tend to strip the subtleties out of Shakespearean language, making a play like Lear rather earthy, I would suspect.

This kind of clash of world-views is inevitable given the government’s insistence on school’s having qualified teachers (requiring tertiary education) and the Brethren’s insistence on discouraging tertiary education, thereby ensuring there are no qualified Brethren teachers. The only way round this issue is for Brethren school boards to maintain extreme control over teaching material and course content. Ms. Martin must have known about this requirement given that she had been working there since 2006.

Whereas the Exclusive Brethren have the perfect right to impose their world view on the teachers (it is their school, after all), the teachers have absolutely no right to attempt to impose an opposing world view. Ms. Martin had apparently been encouraging pupils to go on to university, despite her contract specifically barring that.

Anyone who deliberately sucks smoke into their lungs regularly are the numbnuts Phil, especially when it’s unfiltered.

They long term affects of smoking are well known, it’s often difficult if not impossible to separate the effects of tobacco from dope, many dopey smokers also smoke other crap anyway.

I was talking to my mother in the weekend, she wishes she had never started smoking, she managed to give up for the third and last time thirty years ago but that may have been to late. She found out last week she has the big C.

So I don’t even feel like laughing at someone who supports getting numbnutted on dope calling others that name.

ya gotta remember there was no advance pulicity on the time/date..even occurance..

..that was all done thru on-line networks..

..key knows this..

..and knows that had this march/protest been publicised al all..

..that there wd have been a shitload more marchers…

on this issue..key is ‘losing’ middle new zealand..

they are not that dumb that they cannot see that a 1% royalty for us/the govt…and a few jobs..

..and most/all(?) profits going off-shore…

..and our environment despoiled..

..and the tailings/mess left for us to clean up…

..is not that pot-of-gold-chimera this govt/the mining industry is trying to spin it as..

..and of course..the subtext here is the promises made to the mining industry..pre-election..

..as donation/campaign-solicitations..?

eh..?

prepare yrselves for a handbrake slide..and a u-turn from key…

..he really dosen’t want to be one-term-john..eh..?

..and continuing on down this mining-path..

..could well ensure that..

..and hey..!..nikki kaye is already toast in auckland central..

..how far will that contagion spread..?

hooten knows he/the miners are losing the battle..

..that is why he is so frantic/frenetic..not to mention frazzled..

i see the clegg-wave reaching here by then..and the greens doing better than currently expected..

..a large reason for that being that so many green policies are now so mainstream…sen as commonsense..with the common good as a driver..

them and labour having enough to form a govt wd be the ideal…(with greens as equal partners/ministries division..etc..

Priceless philu, what a strange screwed up world you inhabit. More then happy to suck on a joint of weed but believe a glass of milk will bring the angle of death to your door. Believe it or not I have mates that are quite parshall to a good toke on a joint. Many now freely admit ti wasn’t the wisest move they ever made. I have yet to hear anyone other then demented vegans express regret they drank milk. Perhaps you should try the odd glass, clearly your brain is a few cells short.

Anyone concerned about glaciers melting should read this: Catastrophic retreat of glaciers in Spitsbergen (Norway).

Extract:

“I’ve been given a report on glaciers and sea ice in the Arctic that I want to share with readers. There’s some compelling evidence of glacier melting and open water in the Arctic sea in this report that I haven’t seen before.

There are also worrisome reports of significant temperature increases, with anomalies of several degrees. Also in the report is the mention of ice free open sea of almost 2 million square kilometers, which is termed as “unprecendented in the history of the Arctic”.

It is shocking to read. I urge readers to have a look at some of the excerpts I’ve posted.”

So who knew about this little lot. Snuck out late at night while no one was watching.

First home subsidy tax break – Finance Minister Peter Dunne announced quietly late on Friday that KiwiSaver members who qualify for the first home subsidy will not be taxed on the subsidy.

The subsidy provides for $1000 for each year of contribution, up to a maximum of $5000 and is administered by the Housing New Zealand Corporation.

The rule change making the first home deposit subsidy a social assistance suspensory loan for tax purposes was made by Order in Council on Monday 26 April.
