Carter only nomination for Te Atatu

June 23rd, 2010 at 6:05 am by David Farrar

The Dom Post reports:

Labour has confirmed that Te Atatu MP Chris Carter is the only nomination for the seat, meaning he is soon likely to be ratified as a candidate for the 2011 election.

Cheers around the Beehive can be heard welcoming this news.

As the only candidate, Mr Carter would now face a confirmation meeting run by his local electorate committee, including a question and answer session, a speech and a formal motion of confirmation.

Maybe the electorate committee will hold him to account?

Mr Carter’s long-time partner, Peter Kaiser, is the electorate chairman in Te Atatu.

Maybe not.

The question is not so much whether or not Carter believes what he says on all this. He obviously doesn’t.

The question is more whether Goff believes anything HE says – or whether Goff is just hamming it up for the cameras.

After all, if Goff was being honest here, would he really have failed to act behind the scenes to delay the Te Atatu announcement from being made?

Surely not. I find it hard to believe this is true. Is it just me, or does that seem entirely wrong?

In a small country – and particularly in small local communities – there will necessarily be conflicts of interest. However, this does seem to be the sort of conflict that would be prohibited either by party rules, or by good judgement.

I am not deeply immersed in the machinations of how electorates function …… is this sort of thing common?

National won the party vote in 2009 (11183 vs 11171) so it wouldn’t be impossible however I think it could be a bridge to far.

Perhaps Peter Kaiser will be nominated should Carter stand down. That way, the family’s standard of living wouldn’t suffer too much ;-)

Stuff was running a poll yesterday asking “Is Chris Carter’s apology for his extravagant spending sincere?”

1618 people have responded. Of these, 1443 (89.2%) have answered “No”. The people have spoken, it would seem.

Goff and Carter seem to have reached some sort of impasse. Carter stays at home, recess and school holidays are coming up, he and partner are packing for their next overseas jaunt (as a long serving MP he still gets free air flights). Goff has been openly challenged; Carter has treated him as the deputy he was to Helen and refuses to accept his authority. Goff cannot sack him (the electorate nomination looks like a jack-up – designed to send a message). Goff’s only option is to demote Carter further. And risk alenating a large section of the caucus. It is all about numbers.

The rainbow power bloc will have him moved up the party list to ensure that any punishment by the electorate is mockingly reciprocated.

Trout, they seem to be forgetting about the most important numbers (as indicated by the Stuff poll) – voters. If they carry on like this I doubt they will be ready to put up a decent challenge in 2014. Their only strategy at the moment is to try and find any obscure way they can to bring National down – at risk (reality) of keeping on pissing off the voters they need.

The impression I get is that they are not even in proper recovery mode yet, too busy trying to fight old internal battles.

I think the fact that Carter’s wife is the Electorate Chair tells you all you need to know about the dire state of Labour’s membership.

Why would anybody join a party that is not democratic in the way it runs itself? That is why Labour and ACT’s membership has severely declined, and National’s has flourished.

  21. Inventory2 (8,807) Says:

You’re right Trout; Goff has been effectively painted into a corner. He can do the right thing and cut Carter adrift, but that will alienate a significant faction within Caucus, quite possibly a majority, who still owe their places in Parliament to Helen Clark. Or he can bow to the threat posed by that faction, and relent on any further action against Carter, in which case the public will accuse him of being weak.

Perhaps that’s why David Cunliffe served up a juicy supplementary question to Bill English yesterday on the subject of TV3 polls. Perhaps Cunliffe has decided (or has been advised) that he is the “annointed one” …

Yet another example of the bad governance we suffer from in NZ In any organisation the good governance principle is that persons with a personal or family relationship do not take part in any decision concerning that person.

You either at best dont put yourself into that situation or you abstain from taking part in any discussions and decisions involving the related party,

Now in NZ we get the same old lame old excuse that there arent enough people to avoid conflicts of interest.

That is pure BULLSHIT. For all our supposed squeaky clean image just like pollution we have a dark deep secret. Sure we not up there with Nigeria etc but we do push the envelope from Parliament and Corporations downwards.

We just dont get the logic that good governance is good for the majority. Instead we have this little nudge nudge wink wink mentality when it comes to governance and this situation is a classic example

Te Atatu just became a very interesting seat in 2011. The good people of Te Atatu would be mad to want Carter to represent them after the latest series of blunders. They have, however, said on no less than 3 occasions that they don’t want Tau Henare to represent them. If the Nat’s stick with Tau and Liarbore stick with Carter, the field will be wide open for one of the large minor parties to make a successful run. If ACT or (God forbid) the Greens (or again, God Forbid, Corruption First) put up a strong, credible candidate, the seat will likely be theirs for the taking. Interesting times, as they say.
