Friday Photo- 11 June

Aah, made it back to Auckland last night. Knocking back the coffees now, hoping for inspiration.
Thought we’d go with a bird theme today- it’s the most famous kakapo in NZ at the moment.

Nocturnal birds are always a bit of a technical challenge to photograph, especially when flash has been ruled out. So this photo has had some careful editing.
It’s also I guess, an interesting example of the contributions that private sector, public agencies and volunteers can make to conservation.

…how’s that then?

this soft focus picture is like porn for ornithologists, i bet you clocked up a fortune watching National Geographic on your recent trip to Australia. Sick bastard!

@stephen
Early work on kakapo was sponsored by BP, then Comalco (that’s the private sector side).
Wildlife Service & DoC goes without saying
There are also a small army of conservation volunteers involved on Codfish island

Thanks. Hopefully Comalco et al are in it for the long haul.

Chthoniid – Great photo. A rare parrot of the shagging variety – yes?
June 11th, 2010 at 10:56 am
@krazykiwi – yes, very much the shagging version.

@real independent
lol.. no, sadly, the places I stay in Australia are a little too feral to have much in the way of modern entertainment.

They’re like big green feathery puppies. They will literally trundle along after you. Hunting them must have taken some real “skill”.
They’re about has evolutionary prepared to survive in the modern environemnt as Jane Fonda in an American Legion confernce.

Great shot, Spidy.
How DID you manage it without a flash?
June 11th, 2010 at 11:51 am
Murray 11:34 am,
Please don’t use the ‘e’ word around me, it offends my sensitive predisposition – and I’m not talking about “environemnt” [sic].
June 11th, 2010 at 11:52 am
@Murray- they’re superbly adapted for a world where the only predators were avian. It’s a bit of a shame these adaptations are just so impotent now.

@Kris K – the photo is taken at a slow 1/15 sec, I’ve opened up the lens to f2.8 (which is why the background is defocused) to maximise the light coming in. And the ISO is 1600 to amplify what little light there was.

When I say environment I mean the real one, not the freak show gaia worshipping furit loops talk about.
We should teach them to use tiny M16′s. Take that you dirty rats… and Norwegan tourists! M1.6 0.05 cal
