Incredible
June 29th, 2010 at 1:32 pm by David FarrarI almost choked on my food when I read an op ed in the Dominion Post this morning. It was from Ross Meurant and on the need for higher ethical standards in Parliament and the NZ Police.
I can only assume that the next op ed will be by Mark Hotchin on the need for better financial markets regulation. And then after that a special op ed by Madonna on why you should abstain from pre-marital sex.

You shouldn’t be surprised in the slightest.
The DomPost is an ordinary and parochial paper, devoting a lot of ink and footprint to worthless columnists such as Boniface, Watkins, Bennett, James and Trotter.
Vote:The honourable exception to this dreadful line-up is the frank curmudgeon Karl du Fresne, whose articles always hit the target. A pity his column is only published fornightly.

I don’t really have any time for Ross Meurant. But I do have to acknowledge that he has fairly consistently said that his actions while a police officer, and that of felow officers, were wrong. With Meurant it’s hard to tell if there’s genuine contrition but the fact that he’s been saying this consistently for some time suggests to me he might genuinely believe it, in which case I can only commend him for his belated self-awareness and honesty.
I’ve seen at least one lengthy article by him some years ago which demonstrated a genuine understanding of the issues involved and talked intelligently about how to improve the accountability of policing.
Just as criminals can genuinely reform and, if they do, become some of the most effective anti-crime advocates, so too can policemen.
The trouble with Meurant is that he can’t seem to see wrong without first doing it, as his more recent career as Winston’s bag man illustrates. That comes, I think, from a degree of arrogance seldom found even in our most dedicated troughers. When he visited the NZF offices one got the impression that he was upset we mere staffers hadn’t sounded the trumpets and bowed from the waist as he passed by
