On a completely different note:

I see that, as predicted, a certain Mr. Bethune is being given star billing on TV3’s 60-minutes programme this coming Wednesday. No doubt he will be fawned-over and give absolutely his usual riveting and dramatic oratory about the martyrdom, pain and sufferinghe ‘endured’ for ‘the cause’, and, of course, pick up his (no doubt substantial) cheque as he walks out the door.

Journalistic standards, what journalistic standards?

The All Blacks are not a national team, they are a carefully manicured and protected brand.
When I couldn’t watch it on national television any more they ceased to be of any real interest.
Like Bruv said, their arrogance (and that of their religious supporters) kind of leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Not quite good enough but not for lack of trying. Most days they are capable of beating any team but the WC knockout is unforgiving of off days, better preparation by the opposition, bad luck or whatever.

The last loss in the WC was extremely unlikely, despite that they perhaps should have overcome it if they were good enough on the day.

England peaked with a very strong team and deserved Australia.

The All Blacks were a bit cocky and complacent in the UK and were simply beaten.

In South Africa they were the best team at the tournament, they got beaten by widespread illness in the team, the passion of the opposition and the occasion.

That’s sport.

Yeah, there is a lot of business in the mix these days, but that’s also sport at the higher levels. The All Black Team and the All Black brand are very successful, I don’t see anything wrong with that.

Striving to be the best is not the same as expecting to be the best, of being seen as a failure if you are not always the best.

Compared to most countries NZ is in a reasonable state albeit with obvious room for improvement. Most people don’t like and wouldn’t want major changes, hence National are prudently nudging things in the direction they want, and most people are reasonably happy with that. Also, most people don’t post on Kiwiblog.

Compared to most countries NZ is in a reasonable state albeit with obvious room for improvement.

Singapore 15% + GDP growth, Not this year but this quarter.
An island no bigger than Lake Taupo with the same population.

Buildings going up like crazy, new rail to Malaysia when Auckland can’t get there to Newmarket.

Unemployment almost nil, Don’t work, don’t eat.

And we give money not food to those that want to watch telly all day.
No weeds around, no litter, almost no crime, hardly ever see a policeman.

Full of tourist and families from India and China. Why safe place to visit.

NZ Thugs abound, unemployed given money and allowed to run riot. It just goes on and on and on.

According to Bill our debt will be around until 2015. i.e. low wages for another 5 years. that will keep the banks poor and Pavelitch whinging about house prices/ income ratio’s.

Bulk transfers of funds to the Maori, keeping taxpayers poor and restraining business.

National need a rocket up them.

I’m not sure New Zealanders would be happy with a 10% private owner-occupier housing market like Singapore. And it would be difficult to get a major shipping route past us here. Also difficult to plonk us in the middle of heavily populated countries.

We could learn some things from what Singapore succeeds at, but we are vastly different countries. We even have more than one political party running the country.

WASHINGTON: Here’s the latest twist in a bizarre tale: In May, an Islamic group announced plans to build a $100 million, 13-story Islamic center within blocks of the former World Trade Center.
The proposed Islamic center has become a flash point of controversy. The idea for Cordoba House has been planned for a number of years. It is to be built on the site of a former coat factory store on Park Place, about two blocks from Ground Zero.
The Islamic center is supported by most politicians in Manhattan and by religious leaders of many faiths. It has the support of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, now the state’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate. The Republican contender for governor, Rick Lazio, has called upon Cuomo to investigate the center’s funding in his capacity as attorney general. Some Sept. 11 families, conservative politicians, right-wing bloggers and Tea Party activists oppose the idea.
Protests have flared against what some in the opposition — led predominantly by right-wing conservatives, including some families of 9/11 victims and activists of the so-called Tea Party movements — call the “Ground Zero Mosque” project, falsely implying the Islamic center would be built on the footprint of the World Trade Center towers.
“Through misinformation and shameless fear-mongering,” the online American publication Salon recently noted, the opposition to the project has 46 percent support on the island of Manhattan, according to a Quinnipiac University poll.
The plan for Cordoba House has been the dream of Imam Feisel Abdul Rauf and his wife Daisy Khan. Khan said it would have facilities for athletics, arts, performances, lectures series, forums and weddings, as well as a prayer space – making more of an inter-faith community center than a mosque.
Abdul Rauf, an imam based in New York, told reporters that the principal aim of the center is to prevent radicalization and the recurrence of events like 9/11. He added that The Cordoba House would include a public memorial to the nearly 3,000 victims of the terrorist attack.
“My colleagues and I are the anti-terrorists,” Abdul Rauf wrote in a New York Daily News op-ed. “We are the people who want to embolden the vast majority of Muslims who hate terrorism to stand up to the radical rhetoric. Our purpose is to interweave America’s Muslim population into the mainstream society.”
“Our religion has been hijacked by the extremists,” said Daisy Khan. “This center will create this kind of counter momentum which will amplify the voices of the moderate Muslims. If we have to defeat the extremists, Muslims have to be leading that effort.”

Shame on you P.G. for having little or no aspirations for our country.

You must be deluded in thinking the status-quo is sustainable. The reform of the welfare state cannot (and should not) be delayed any longer, although according to you no “prudent” politician would even dare to undertake the task.

What you propose is the country continues on its path to mediocrity by fostering a growing underclass dependency on welfare handouts, people who would be easily manipulated every three years. Even worse, Working For Families now extends to concept even to middle class recipients.

A National government needs to deliver what is good for New Zealand. Nothing less is acceptable.

Can someone explain to me why Cameron Slater(Whale Oil) got himself into such a lather of sweat over Peter Goodfellow the National Party president. Some of the commentary seems mighty strange. Has his father John Slater any influence over his son.
Whale Oil’s choices didn’t seem to go too well and he seems to have got the “pip” with the National Party.Or is it one Auckland jaffa acting like Don Quixote whacking away at windmills.
Slater seems to whip up storms over very little.
I would love to know what goes on ?

The problem with All Black rugby as to other rugby in the world is that is has been high jacked. The rules are crap as the referees have too much influence on the out come of the game. The IRB are a bunch of wally’s who are self serving to the nothern hemisphere unions. So really I do not care in the AB’s win or loose, as it is lke politics and the way this country is run, most of the time the wrong option is taken for the benefit of one person or a certain group of people.

This excerpt from todays Herald about an inmate whose declared income for the year was $109,000 and who received a larger amount in Legal Aid partly to sue the warders tends to show why it costs $90,000 a year to keep them inside, why there is no space for more beds, and how comfortable a life-style it can be.

“The Department of Corrections has also agreed to supply its own legal support to help him – allowing the prisoner to sue his jailers using their own lawyers.

“Documents seen by the Herald on Sunday show Inland Revenue “assessed” Taylor’s income at $109,682. The assessment was done to work out how much child support Taylor should be paying – about $23,000 for two other children, aged 3 and 16 at the time. But prisoners do not have to pay child support while in custody.

A Corrections spokeswoman said the department did not inquire into the wealth of prisoners. She said Taylor was treated like “every other prisoner”.

Taylor had been assigned a room with his own computer and law books to work on the case.”

Neil, his and Fran’s issue are to do with the demonstrable lack of performance shown by the re-elected President to date, plus some in the caucus notably Brownlie and McCully, put undue pressure on the delegates to vote for this lacklustre performer, plus the caucus is not inviting indeed ignoring the need for, vigorous conference debate on sensitive issues of the day. In other words, the caucus is pretending it’s actually the Party itself, which it’s not.

Those are all things that need sunlight, IF they are happening.

Cheating by the referees is institutionalised. They constantly shout at the players and warn them if they are about to commit an infringement. In many cases, these warnings deny a team a penalty kick and certain points. This is laughable. What other sport allows such blatant cheating by the umpire/ refereee?

The referee needs to shut his mouth and blow his whistle if there is an infringement.

Yes yes yes, I know they do it for “continuity”, but if cheating by the referees is what it takes to make the game watchable then its fucked. There is no way this should be tolerated for any reason. Some referees spend the whole damn game yelling their fucking heads off at the players. Just hopeless.

I watched the Warriors/ Storm. Rugby is on a downhill slide and the slide won’t be stopped by cheating and yelling referees.

Just 250m away at the Auckland City Mission, dozens of homeless people queued up for handouts of bread and jam.

Oh those heartless Nats, how dare they confer at SkyCity. Liarbore would NEVER have done that. Oh the humanity!

The whiney bosseswho claim they should have the right to sack any employee without any consequences are people who shouldn’t be employing other human beings in the first place.

This proposed employment relationship isn’t a partnership between capital and labour but a feudal system of a lord ruling over compliant serfs.

Key claims it takes away the risks for employers. What about the risk for employees, even now? Current employees take the risk every day with their jobs. They hope their management knows what it’s doing and their owners don’t make bad business decisions that affect their pay and job security. Key is allowing bad employers to get away with shonky practices and let their employees take the rap without any comeback if things go wrong.

Key’s other proposal to let employees trade their holidays for cash is just a cynical manoeuvre to screw workers out of paid holidays to which they are entitled.

The only reason workers would trade their holidays for cash is because their wages are too low and they need the money to pay bills.

I know exactly what bad bosses will do. They will tell vulnerable workers they can’t pay them a pay rise but they will “buy” their holidays off them.

I know enough about these sorts of people in the real world that Key naively pretends doesn’t exist.

Kate Wilkinson, the Minister of Labour, states she wants to return more “control” to the employer. That’s the real agenda. It’s called class war and Key’s mask has been lifted. Now we know why he’s nicknamed the smiling assassin.

Yes Matt, our universal common experience nay knowledge, is that EVERY SINGLE employer can’t wait to pay us nothing indeed whip us till we drop, if only Key would let them. Everyone knows that.

I have aspirations for the country, I just think we are more likely to improve incrementally rather than by taking bigger unproven risks. I remember a few years ago people were saying we should be doing what Ireland was to encourage new business, but it doesn’t seem to have done them a lot of good in the long run.

Well when the geniuses assessed me for the same reason they were out by 1,000% (no, that extra zero is meant to be there). He could well be earning $10,000. Or $1,000. Since it cost me $6,000 in legal fees to sort the idiots out, I guess the taxpayer will have to foot the bill if Taylor wants to challenge his assessment… because when proved wrong IRD don’t cover your costs, they just move on to tormenting the next guy.

But if a prisoner has any income beyond the $6 or so a day it’s possible to earn in prison it must all be through passive investments… that’s quite some portfolio. Anyone know if that’s plausible? Was he the kind of person, prior to his arrest, who’d have that sort of money?

The Department of Corrections has also agreed to supply its own legal support to help him – allowing the prisoner to sue his jailers using their own lawyers.

That would be an impossible conflict of interest. And while departments usually have in-house counsel those aren’t generally the people you’re up against in court if you’re against that department… they generally bring in outside litigation specialists (Crown Law). Even in a relatively simple human rights case against the WA Department of Corrections I’m up against the Assistant State Solicitor, not a lawyer from the department itself.

Yes but nor do they assess and grant legal aid. The department is bound to give prisoners preparing their own appeals access to law books and a computer (not connected to the internet) on which type up their submissions. That’s all. And “access to” a computer doesn’t necessarily mean he gets his own… usually it’s an old clunker in the law library.

So, in typical Herald fashion, the story tells us nothing. Is he getting “Legal Aid” or is he just being aided legally? What sort of activity produces a passive income of $100,000+ PA? Etc etc.

Funny how people here rightly decry the shoddy standards of journalism in this country (as with the “greedy lunchers” story in this same thread!!) but are prepared to believe it when it reinforces their preconceptions!

Tua was beaten, Tua was out boxed, Tua was knocked over for the first time in his career yet the judges still said it was a draw.

Unfortunately, you clearly don’t understand the points scheme that governs the sport of professional boxing, and has governed for centuries.
The overall outcome of the fight is decided by the overall performance in every round, calculated in the end for a final score. Tua’s opponent did not secure enough for an outright victory – it was that simple. A bit like the British Conservatives’ at the last General Election?

REX…………I wouldn’t have a clue how much Arthur William TAYLOR has in investments. I do know that he has a several decades long career as a successful criminal probably without equal in the country. I am very familiar with the rules of boxing and how the rounds are scored, there is no way at all that Tua can lay claim to drawing that bout.
The result is all about business, one boxer had announced that this was his final fight, the other has big money behind him and the prospect of a title shot (thus proving that the heavyweight division is extremely poor at the moment save for the odd Russian and German scrapper)

I stand by my statement, the result of that fight is corrupt.

What some fail to understand re: this is that just because a Holy Book could be read to say that, it doesn’t necessarily follow that every single believer rigidly adheres to that particular precept.

It is indeed true that your average Muslim is a heck of a lot more serious about their religion than your average Christian. That doesn’t necessarily mean that there are more of them, numberically, that take this extreme interpretation, than the equivalent number of total Christians vs right-wing nutter Christians from the US Bible Belt. I would submit they’re approximately the same percentage. Who knows: 2%?

I have to disagree with you big bruv, two of the three judges presented an equal and even score, one gave the call to Barett (and only just with 115-112). It is hardly ‘corruption’ when Tua evidently secured most of the earlier rounds. In fact, most commentators argued that if it wasn’t for Tua’s fall on the last round, victory would have been secured by Tua.

Boxing is a game of points, it just so happened that Tua won as many as Barett, hardly enough for the title of one of the world’s most corrupt sporting initiatives (as you suggest).

If you heard what I heard he didn’t actually say that, he said their plans for Epsom hadn’t not been decided and fudged around, but from what wasn’t said it looked like they might give Rodney an easy ride. It doesn’t mean he gets to keep the electorate, depends on who else stands there and how much of a hit he takes for his gallivanting last year and from super city fallout.

Have almost finished The Great Depression Ahead – How to Prosper in the Debt Crisis of 2010-2012 by Harry S Dent.

A very good read and I’d encourage everyone to get a copy. Dent stands out from most economists in that he predicted the extent and timing of the global financial crisis… and was mocked at the time. There is some fascinating analysis of long-term, historical demographic trends and closely corresponding economic swings.

I have no idea. Dent appears convinced that Europe will tank, and that a global economic winter will last until ~2018. It won’t be as severe as the great depression being cushioned because of wealth creation as China and India move people out of poverty.

Dent also picks a period of devaluation which will support the USD.. while most traditional economists are predicting the USD to decline. Get a copy of the book. Well worth it. I’m giving mine to our teens and will then give it away here on KB.

I’ve now had time to look up Taylor’s background (I was dashing out when I wrote the above). Around 120 convictions, a 30 year criminal career and more than a decade in Paremoremo doesn’t give someone much scope for amassing an honestly-earned fortune.

Thus to have his annual income, while in jail, assessed at $100,000+ means:

1. IRD have no clue (possible, see my comment above)
2. IRD are assessing his child support based on how much they think he’s stolen (But that’s other people’s money, not his and thus not theirs to get their grasping hands on)
3. The Herald is full of it (also possible, see “greedy Nats” story referenced above)

I’d believe he has access to the law library, which any prisoner working on their own case has access to as of right, and that he seems to be allowed to work on a computer – either one provided by the prison, or perhaps one bought by his family. It has nothing to do with his intimidating prison management… that’s standard entitlements for a prisoner working on an appeal or some other case which a court has agreed to hear.

But if he’s really earning $100,000+ a year then there’s no way he’d get Legal Aid.

And there’s no way Corrections would assign their own lawyers to work for him if he’s suing the warders. They simply wouldn’t be allowed to, as it’s a clear conflict of interest.

I think there’s a story there – especially the $100,000+ a year of unexplained wealth (or IRD’s stupidity in assessing it at that) – but it’s not, as usual, the story the Herald has written.

The comment at the end of the article on Arthur Taylor clarifies matters, his wife stated her husband declared his income ,paid his taxes and child support although he didnt have to !!!!
So obviously he does have income while in prison and the IRD are working on information supplied by him.
Yes Arthur does have a special room with a computer supplied to him ,and yes if inteested parties want to check the true situation re help being supplied from corrections a quick trip to Judicial Deciscions on line ,go to search option and type in
Authur William Taylor and read the 2010 decisions should make it clear that assistance is indeed coming his way.
Looking at all the time he has tied up the courts over recent years and in particular with the child custody case .a simple DNA Test would put the matter to rest once and for all. However it appears that this is something Mr Taylor is strenuosly resisting.
