Am I in a minority of one? Am I the only one who thinks the ETS (Eternal Taxation Scam)was a crock of shit?
Where are the people? Has everyone on the so-called ‘right’ of the blogosphere become a cheerleader for John Key and National? Pathetic. Like sheep. line up for increased fuel, food and goods costs on top of the ACC and rise in GST simply on the grounda that we are still releived that he is not Helen Clark? I put this rort up there with the EFA. A similar rammed process which sacrificed peoples’ rights on the altar of ‘higher political principle’ which turned out to be no such thing. In fact it turned out to be rotten to the core.

Trouble is: what’s the alternative? ACT will just see them returned. At this rate I am worried I will end up voting Winston!

A few thoughts about the ETS.

1. Key has used his majority, and left’s very successful demonisation of ACT to his advantage. He knows only the most vocal ETS objectors are likely move into the arms of the coalition partner ACT, so no net loss.

2. Every good scam has several layers of plausibility. This one has quite a few: The threat of economic isolation of we don’t. ETS credits for coalition supporters. Promoting and pinging our eco-guilt. Kudos for Key & Smith in the global UN trough. The one I want to know about is any pecuniary advantage for Key and Smith.

3. The history of the most ardent political supporters of emissions-type trading shows there’s money to be made for the smart. Key is good at making a buck. And Smith is, as of 4 weeks ago, off the hook in terms of a $14.7m defamation claim brought by a timber company. Does anyone else believe these guys want the ETS because they care about the planet? Anyone?

National have lost my vote. Perhaps more disturbingly, this episode underscores for me the complete failure of democracy in our country. When successive governments can do whatever they like, and to hell with the people who placed them in office then it’s time for a new system, or time to leave.. or time to ignore it and tune in to the lotto draw.

Colonel Masters nails it – what’s the alternative? I can’t bring myself to vote for Act. Labour, the Progressives, the Greens and NZ First all voted for Labour’s version of the ETS, which was far more punitive that National’s version. The Maori Party or Peter Dunne – ahhhhh; no!

And anyone wishing to jump ship from National should think very carefully before supporting Winston Peters. It was NZ First’s votes which enabled Labour’s ETS to pass in the days leading up to the 2008 election. Winston will doubtless want to rewrite history yet again, but this is one issue on which he must not be allowed to gain traction.

@IV2 – Hmmm, are you a victim of the left’s demonisation of ACT? Have you looked at ACT’s 20-Point Plan. Which of these actions points would be bad for NZ in your opinion? I like the thinking in here, and while ACT is far from perfect the type of country I want for my kids and grandkids is looking less and less likely under the RGB Socialists [That’s Red Green Blue Socialists!]

As for Winston, has he paid back the $158,000 he stole from us?

No apologies for posting this again. For anyone who hasn’t read this, here is the John Key I voted for:

“I want to start off with a broad-ranging discussion, if I may, around the Kyoto Protocol and the absolutely nonsensical road that this Government is taking New Zealand down. I know we have a Prime Minister who is very confident, and all the rest of it, but maybe she would like to step out of her office on the 9th floor and realise which planet she is on. She is on the same planet, she may be surprised to learn, as India, China—And Mugabe, yes—and a lot of other countries out there that have ratified the Kyoto Protocol. And why would they not, because they have absolutely no requirements on them, whatsoever. Yet here we are down in New Zealand, a very little country with about 0.2 percent of the world’s emissions, putting a self-imposed straitjacket on our businesses, and waving a huge flag that says: “Foreign investment, don’t come anywhere near us. Australia is over there—the West Island. Go over there to pour your dollars in.” To the Chinese we are saying: “Come in and buy as much coal as you like from our West Coast. We’ll sell it to you and you can burn it without a carbon charge—but, by the way, to those back here in Aotearoa New Zealand we will be slapping on a carbon charge and you won’t be able to operate.”

This is a complete and utter hoax, if I may say so. The impact of the Kyoto Protocol, even if one believes in global warming—and I am somewhat suspicious of it—is that we will see billions and billions of dollars poured into fixing something that we are not even sure is a problem.

Let us have a look at the Government’s response to the Kyoto Protocol. Our friends in Australia said they do not want a bar of it. They do not want to know anything about it; neither do our friends in America. I saw George W Bush, the President of the United States of America…….. saying that America would not be ratifying the Kyoto Protocol, because it is not good for jobs and it is not good for the American economy. I understood that. I got it. Then I saw John Howard, the Prime Minister of Australia, addressing the Australian people and saying the same thing—that it is not good for jobs and it is not good for the economy. So when I turned to New Zealand TV and found out that we not only would be ratifying the Kyoto Protocol but in fact would be the first country in the world—that is right—to be blazing a trail to put on a carbon tax, I was somewhat astounded……..

What are we doing to the consumers and businesses of New Zealand? We are putting a tax on them…..
So my prediction is that that will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. The public are sick and tired of paying additional taxes for all sorts of crazy ideas.”

Key’s astounding new take on this makes Paul of Damacus look like a skeptic.
As far as I know, no one in the media has asked and gotten an answer to a very simple question: “Mr Key, what have you read or heard that has caused such a dramatic change of heart and would you kindly tell the rest of us what it is?”

It makes me want to put my foil hat on because the only explanation that makes sense is that for some reason, an external power has us by the nuts and is directing much of our policy? This is truly baffling.

What troubles me with Act though is the depth of its party list. If David Garret is the best Act can serve up at #5, what talent lurks lower on the list? And who will be their finance spokesperson going forward, given that Sir Roger Douglas is even older than Jim Anderton, and will be almost 74 when the country goes to the polls next year? To all intents and purposes, Act is Douglas and Douglas is Act. Is there a succession plan.

I have endeavoured to understand the Government’s ETS.
I have communicated with the Minister’s Office {Hon Dr Nick Smith] asking to inform me of an official website which will explain the New Zealand Emissions trading System.
A reply said Please find the information you are looking for here:

So, regarding electricity –
I understand the trading ‘currency’ – NZUs – must be purchased from the Government.

“Who are the participants in the scheme for the energy sector?
Participants are those who import or mine coal and import or mine natural gas, plus petrol refineries and stationary energy producers who use geothermal fluid, used oil, waste oil, used tyres , waste or biofuels for electricity generation or industrial heat.”

So those who supply fuels [coal, gas, oil, and waste oil and tyres, geothermal fluid, waste or biofuels] for electricity generation purchase NZUs.
The NZUs for the period 1 July 2010 to 31 December 2010 are due by 31 May 2011 –

[“When will energy sector participants have to start surrendering NZUs?
The energy sector has obligations to surrender NZUs from 1 July 2010. The first due date they must surrender NZUs by is 31 May 2011 for the period 1 July 2010 to 31 December 2010.”]

My understanding of this, then, is that those who supply the fuels to the generators pay the NZUs.
They will therefore charge a higher price for their fuels to the generators. Who will then charge the power users – the public.

So this is a chain recovery of prices for which Mercury Energy has announced a 3.3% price increase from the day of the scheme’s inception. However, Mercury Energy is the retail arm of Mighty River Power, which generates more than 90 per cent of its power from renewable sources.
So the 3.3% increase is for the 10% of Mercury power generated from fossil fuels used since July 1 2010.

How have they calculated this increase? And does the ‘very persuasive Gerry Brownlee have the answer?

The stupid scam subsidises forestors to plant and grow trees and then taxes them to harvest them which will make the end product uneconomic especially in competition of overseas producers not burdened with such stupidity.Sheep and Cattle farmers will be uneconomic from the start and will stop producing food and instead plant wood for the subsidy which they will receive as long as they don’t harvest it.

A major challenge for Act. Having a nice 20 point plan that most people can agree with is fine when you are at best a minority part of government. Having enough candidates capable of doing the Plan justice if they actually got in to a position of major power without stuffing other things up is a pertinent question.

Our governments have always been like that. We elect 3 year dictatorships. Pray we never give them 4 years at a time.

Also a good reason not to return to FPP. MMP isn’t perfect by any stretch, but I would rather have some ameliorating factors on the government of the day than a return to a two party dictatorial system. (Incidentally I can’t see that National ETS move was a sop to the MP – we would have been on the receiving end of that thieving nonsense if they had been elected under FPP.)

As for ACT. I don’t vote for them because it is alway a potential waste. How often have they been reliant on Epsom to get any representation at all?

As for Douglas, he is the reason I might vote for ACT. Do you people not remember ’84 – ’87? Painful? Sure. But he single handedly saved our country from bankruptcy by making us grow up economically and stand on our own two feet. And a pragmatist.

I first voted ACT when I heard Roger Douglas and Richard Prebble speak at an AKL town hall meeting soon after ACT was formed. They were very convincing and seemed to me to be years ahead in their social and economic thinking. I came away thinking that ACT would be the party that would keep National from making a left turn, which they have. So from that point of view ACT have been a failure. The unionised media have destroyed Hide so whats left? Stephen Franks maybe?

That’s another issue. But if you look at some from Act’s fantasy- to jump to enough seats in one election – that is a huge risk that the electorate is unlikely to take.

I’m all for a stronger Act (and the other parties) but 5 seat increases per election seem enough – IF they can come up with a decent list and IF they can get a balance of electorate seats which seems to be beyond them at the moment.

Yesteday I followed a blog link and ended up in dinosaur media territory at an article by “Herald Business and Media” writer John Drinnan. The page was the usual left wing drivel you find at such places, that piss off left wing slanted crap posing as objective comment, and that you read and then forget instantly seeing it is about as useful today as cave painting instructions.

In fact its always so nowhere, the only time it ever manages to create an impression is when it pisses you off more than usual, as this piece did.

Here was Joe Atkinson complaining that mainstream media audiences were falling off. The media is “heading to hell in a handbasket” Joe reckons. He’s organising a lecture series aimed at this problem, but he doesn’t need any input from media companies.

“Media companies only care about the bottom-line profit … Good journalism is an externality to the market – why would we consult them?” declares Joe. He said that among the lectures would be a discussion about other options for funding journalism. “The solution to the problem is not in a market system probably – or at least not in an unregulated market system like we have at the moment.”

Now Mr. Drinnan just printed all this dross and let it stand. I don’t know if he ever thought about challenging Joe on this worthless commie shit. More likely he couldn’t see past this perspective himself.

Joe needs to explain just how FOX news is going to hell in a hand basket. Its market share increases to grow, and its so successful there’s soon going to be a Canadian version. Same business model. Because its a model that works.

The business model in NZ doesn’t work because its designed by elitist liberals/ progressives who insist on injecting their political viewpoints into every damn story article or opinion piece. At the expense of all other viewpoints, and just like John Drinnan has done in the article that is the subject of this rant.

The man in the street doesn’t need it. As you seem not to understand this Joe and John- this is your fucking market. If you constantly write stuff that pisses off the man in the street, naturally the business model will fail.

The man in the street is completely turned off by having liberal/ Progressive politics (disguised as objective reporting) continually shoved down his throat. That’s your problem, and its an analysis supported by the fact that FOX televison in the US is not suffering any kind of downturn but in fact is gathering viewers at an accelerating rate.

FOX’s success proves Joe Atkinson’s viewpoint wrong. Joe’s angle is nothing but a pathetic attempt to get government grants to continue to shove political views on people THAT THEY DO NOT WANT TO HEAR.

Your article pissed me off Mr. Drinnan. I don’t buy the Herald because almost every article pisses me off in the same way. I don’t watch TV One or TV Three for the same reason. I don’t spend a dollar advertising either, because I want you cheating bastards to go broke.

The longer you push this bullshit that you’re objective, while you continually spin every story to the left, the more people you’re going to piss off. You want to target your business model at sundry left wing academics, cronyist corrupt politicians and shiny arsed overpaid bureaucrats, then do it. Just don’t come whining to the taxpayer for support because you’re too fucking stupid and politically biased to remedy a defect that sticks out like dogs balls to everyone else.

@ Lee – why would people jump back to Goff and Labour? Labour rushed through an Emissions Trading Scheme in the last days of the last Parliament, and under urgency. Labour’s plan would have been far more punitive than the watered-down version that National passed, which I still oppose. David Parker, Charles Chauvel, Sue Moroney and Ruth Dyson spoke for the then-government in the Third Reading debate; all are still members of Labour’s caucus. Jeanette Fitzsimons and Peter Brown (NZ First) also sopke in favour. Here’s how the vote went

A party vote was called for on the question, That the Climate Change Response (Emissions Trading) Amendment Bill and the Electricity (Renewable Preference) Amendment Bill be now read a third time.
Ayes 63 New Zealand Labour 49; New Zealand First 7; Green Party 6; Progressive 1.
Noes 57 New Zealand National 47; Māori Party 4; United Future 2; ACT New Zealand 2; Independents: Copeland, Field.

IMHO Labour has no mandate to benefit from any support that National bleeds over this. This piece from Brian Fallow at the time outlines the likely increases from Labour’s scheme, but in summary they were around an 8% rise in the price of electricity and around a 6% price rise for fuel.

Fox cater successfully for a large market. That doesn’t mean they providing good news coverage. That was one of the points made in that article, the audience is moving away from good news/journalism and towards entertainment and titillation.

Fox’s business success suggests they are at least as good as at that as anyone else.

Have to agree with Redbaiter here. An “unregulated market system” here means state controlled media and state controlled messaging. It’s bad enough that the NZ MSM is full of left wing, hang wringing, ‘sack cloth and ashes’ types under the current commercial model. To have it regulated that they are only type allowed would be the end of any genuine ‘news’ at all.

A lifetime of singing Labour/Green Party songs. Would we have to dress like Kim Jong Il also?

I also, don’t know who I would vote for in an election. I have always voted National but I don’t think I can anymore. And Labour is the socialist / communist arm; so too, the Greens. Not sure I know too much about ACT, but I didn’t like the Super City.

The essence of course is that the media is controlled by left wing political agents rather than honest up front media people. If you look at the page I referenced above, almost everybody on it apart from Leighton Smith (a very rare reference indeed) is an extreme leftist- From Paul Holmes to Carol Herschfeld to John Campbell to Ian Fraser, and of course it contains the usual pejorative reference to Rupert Murdoch. Leftists are ruining the media and not only because they are politically biased but also because they have no business sense.

I watch Fox from time to time, more than any of the other international news channels. I sometimes agree with Krauthammer – he also has columns in Washington Post.

They can be good for some news coverage, often my preference.
Some of their commentators can be good – and some a bit out there.
Some of their shows are aimed at political titillation for nuts.

Fox is not just Glenn Beck . The same as TVNZ is not just Te Karare, or TV2 is not just Creflo Dollar.

He has only been there for a little over a year so has not been a key part of their success over the last 15 years. While I find him tiring and don’t think he’ll last, some of his many shots hit and he has pushed several major stories that have had national impact.

It’s not just Glenn Beck. Hannity. Some of their commenters are a bit out there. I like quite O’Reilly but he takes some things to far.

Yvette your comments at 9.41 regarding Mercury Energy sum up the situation perfectly.

The ETS is designed to increase electricity prices and to create windfall profits for all those who generate electricity from renewable sources.

Mighty River Power generates 90% of its electricity from hydro stations on the Waikato River and geothermal in the mid North Island. Its 100% owned subsidiary Mercury Energy has just increased electricity prices by 3.3%.

In its letter of notification, Mercury put its price rice down solely to the ETS and said it was based on the fact that the electricity industry ‘as a whole’ would need to account and pay for its submissions.

In effect, Mercury is saying while we will have little additional cost, our competitors will and because they will be forced to put up their prices, we will be able to do the same and make windfall profits. This is the reference to costs incurred by the industry ‘as a whole’.

While the National Party have ruled out price gouging they won’t be rulling out price increases of 5% or less. That’s exactly what the ETS is designed to provide!

Treasury have forecast that prices will rise by 5%. Don’t take any comfort from the fact that Mercury’s initial increase is only 3.3%.

The market will be set by Genesis which generates 75% of its electricity from the gas and coal-fired Huntly Power Station.

Genesis has announced it will not be increasing prices immediately, but when its 1 million tonne stockpile of coal runs out you can expect the wholesale price of electricity to rise by 1 cent per unit, and retail prices by 5%. At this stage, expect a further increase from Mercury as it moves to do what the ETS intends – make more money from renewable!

At that time, expect Meridien to increase its prices by 5%, if it hasn’t already done so.

However, the people to feel really sorry for are those living in Southland. They heat their homes with coal. It’s risen by on average 30% (Solid Energy quoted me 18-42% depending on the mine location). So all those living in Southland who heat their homes with coal can pay 30% more this winter to pay massive subsidies to the Japanese owners of Southland Forests. When I had a meeting in Gore a month ago, locals were very unimpressed. It’s lucky the Clutha Southland MP Bill English, has such a big majority. I would be concerned however for National’s party vote.

What a peculiar industry. If I manufactured widgets and increased prices, I would see sales go directly to my competitors. It would be very unusual for them to increase their prices to match mine.

Some people here are worried that if they give their vote to ACT, then they would just be helping National back in. That is probably true, but the higher the popular vote for ACT, the more seats they’d have, the better chance they’d have to leverage in some of their policies. Hell, look what the Maori Party have been able to do and they’re not even in government!

“The ETS operates by imposing a cost, or tax, on emissions of carbon dioxide given off from the burning of coal and gas to produce electricity. It will drive up the cost of producing electricity from these sources. However, because of the way our electricity market works, all generators will get the benefit of being able to charge the higher wholesale price of electricity. Generators will be able to increase their price whether they incur the carbon cost or not and will make windfall profits as a result. The government doesn’t want you to know this but I assure you it is true and that is why I am telling you.

Newspapers across the Ditch and further abroad recently reported the story of an elderly man in Sydney who is touted with having saved hundreds of lives, because of his unique and courageous actions. Don Ritchie and his wife live opposite “the Gap,” a cliff that is Sydney’s most notorious suicide spot.

For nearly fifty years, when Don has seen people stand at the edge of the cliff he has hurried over to them from his home, and invited them inside for a cup of tea and a chat. Hundreds have taken him up on the offer, and those cups of tea have been turning points for many who have paused and reconsidered their decision. They have walked away with a renewed desire to give life a chance.

Many have returned to thank the Ritchies for their generosity. One woman writes to them regularly and hanging on their wall is an artwork another woman painted and sent to them, months after they rescued her.

The council under whose jurisdiction “the Gap” falls, is currently looking into fencing options to close the cliff face off to would-be jumpers. While this may stop people from jumping at this particular spot, it is likely to move rather than solve the problem. Contrasted with this measure, the actions of Don Ritchie and his wife meet the very real need displayed almost weekly on that cliff face—the need for human connection, support and love. In 2006, Don was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for his services.

Now that Kiwibank is getting into the KiwiSaver market, he wants KiwiSaver to be compulsory, and the rate of deductions and employer contributions to go up to 10%. That’s absolute pie-in-the-sky stuff. There might just be a wee issue about conflict of interest in what he is proposing.
