The Glenn Beck/Sarah Palin Restoring Honor “non-political” rally to be held at the Lincoln Memorial on the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s famous speech there (but has nothing to do with King except Dr. Alveda King will speak at it) – is sponsored and promoted by the National Rifleman’s Association.

The mission of the rally is to recognize our First Amendment rights and honor the service members who fight to protect those freedoms.

Hard to fathom what the real aim of this is, what they hope to achieve. Testing the crowd pulling power of Beck and Palin?

I don’t usually take any notice of Australian elections or politics – but today promises to be a doozy with all the storylines at play:

Will Gillard go down in history as a backstabbing loser or a saviour of the nation blazing new trails.

Will Abbot triumph and have the story told of someone who overcame the odds at every step of the way – or will he be seen as the guy who set the scene for someone else in his party to win government.

Best of all – hung parliament with Labour at the mercy of the Greens with years of insane policies to come.

Popcorn time!

The Aussie election campaign seems to have been the culmination of sideshows driven by the media, it’s ended up being a bizarre sort of a freak show. Never mind, it’s only a country’s governance at stake.

Inane political campaigns – maybe one thing we won’t have any trouble catching up with them on.

In the meantime, the flooding crisis continues in Pakistan, in an area the size of the South Island double the population of NZ is in dire need of assistance. Whether ~~to bomb Iran~~ a rally in Washington pulls a crowd or not doesn’t seem such a priority. Does it?

Nomestradamus – You missed nothing, as you may have worked out by now Red is full of it. He never stumped with the money and all ‘we’ heard was more bluster and bullshit about how I was a commie etc etc ( you know the rave ).

That means, of course, that Red is MY BITCH for ever more, and he knows it.

He is either on a benefit or works in a govt department as anyone who can post that much inane crap 60 times a day either has no life or a life paid by us, the taxpayer.

He was reluctant to give me the details I required to confirm his identity and employment status which is a shame as I had the new site ready to go. 🙂

PwC warns of ‘slowth’ decade for house prices

UK house prices will not recover to their 2007 peak for another decade, once the effects of inflation are included, the world’s largest accounting firm has warned.

PricewaterhouseCoopers’ prediction places it alongside other forecasters, Capital Economics and the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR), which have a less than optimistic outlook for the UK housing market.

PwC estimates that prices have already fallen 17pc in real terms, after adjusting for inflation. Although it believes prices will rise at 2pc a year for the next decade, they will not recover the ground lost until 2020.

NIESR is more pessimistic, forecasting that house prices will fall 8pc in the next five years once inflation is taken into account. Capital Economics has been gloomier still, predicting a crash of over 20pc in the next two years as house prices re-establish their traditional link with earnings.

Average house prices roughly tripled under Labour from £77,531 in 1997 to £212,453 in the first quarter of this year – having peaked at £220,000, according to the Department of Communities and Local Government, delivering huge returns for some homeowners even after the recent crash.

What about NZ? I wonder …

It saddens me, Mike, when those on the right, especially when they’re Christians (like Coulter and Beck), are prepared to compromise on their values, and go against clear biblical teaching. This erosion of conservative values by the right will be its eventual downfall and move into irrelevancy if not arrested.

Good on Joseph Farah for making a principled stand – even if it is at the expense of friendship. We need more people who are not prepared to compromise, no matter what the cost. Is this not what we are called to? Are we not here primarily to change hearts and minds, and not foster friendships with those who hold to worldy views and values?

Iran broadcasts missile launch on state television

Iran has test fired a surface-to-surface missile, according to the country’s defence minister

Ahmad Vahidi’s announcement comes a day before Iran is scheduled to launch its Russian-built first nuclear power plant in the southern port city of Bushehr. Television images showed the sand coloured Qiam (Rising) blasting into the air from a desert terrain, amid chants of “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest).

The words “Ya Mahdi” were written on the side of the missile, referring to Imam Mahdi, one of the 12 imams of Shiite Islam, who disappeared as a boy and whom the faithful believe will return one day to bring redemption to mankind.

Mr Vahidi, who was speaking during Friday prayers in Tehran, did not say when the launch took place nor did he disclose the precise range of the missile. “The missile has new technical aspects and has a unique tactical capacity,” he said on state television, adding that the device was of a “new class.” “Since the surface-to-surface missile has no wings, it has lot of tactical power, which also reduces the chances of it being intercepted,” he said.

I wonder how much symbolism there is in the timing – A new missile with “a unique tactical capability” tested one day, and new reactor online the next.

Who here really believes Iran has peaceful intentions?

Doesn’t surprise me, seems like most politicians with ambitions in the US think they have to be seen to be sufficiently Christian. I wonder if that helps them be guided by the Jewish lobby? But are they misguided?

The results from a new Pew make you want to shake your head about, well, the entire media landscape of the 21st century. Per the survey, only 34% believe — correctly — that President Obama is a Christian (down 17 points since 2008); 18% think he’s a Muslim (up six points since ’08); and 43% say they don’t know his religion (up 11 points).

Does this mean it doesn’t really matter? Or are the doubt sowers succeeding? More “don’t know” now than before, moving from those who thought he was a Christian. Is that why he is trying to be more visibly a Christian? Getting tied up in knots, trying to twist in every direction he thinks there could be a voter.

How can people “know” he was a Christian, and now “don’t know”? The US attracts many of the best and brightest from around the world. Maybe they need them to balance what is already there.

If you go back a few years you find opinion polls where a reasonable % of the US population believed that Bush was behind the 9/11 attacks. Little mention of that nuttiness in the now-sullied halls of the NYT and co.

Then there is the perennial question about UFO’s.

Moreover, this sort of stuff is gleefully pounced on by Kiwi’s to push the Stupid Yanks meme so beloved here on both the left and right wings. Rather amusing given the numbers of people here who go for homeopathy and watch Sensing Murder.

Some of this is the simple fact of opinion surveys: what questions you ask, how you ask them, and perhaps what questions are not asked. In the above example I’d have to wonder how many people used that question to simply deliver a poke in the eye to a guy who’s quite happy to feed the Teabaggers slur: message to Obama – Up Yours Pal!

I think the stupid yanks thing is a spiritual malaise as it is almost religious in it’s intensity both with left and right I’ve noticed.
Many of the educated people I know evidence it and it is not reasonable which I find interesting as they get very het up very quickly.

But as a solid supporter of market capitalism, democracy, and secular civil institutions (requiring the separation of church and state naturally) the world over I certainly want Iranian society to get those key pillars.

As I’m sure do all others who regularly claim to support such things. 😉

I support market driven Hayeckian capitalism and I do think Iran is harsh in areas where it shouldn’t be. I also think Iran is widely and often deliberately mis-interpreted by those who should know better and consequently equally widely is mis-understood amongst the general population.

It’s an interesting psyop war they have going using the MSM as the vehicle, is my current thought re: Iran.

Workers are taking to the streets this weekend in a multi-union display of solidarity over new employment laws.

‘Fairness at Work’ rallies are being held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch this afternoon, and Dunedin tomorrow.

The Council of Trade Unions has organised the protest marches, in opposition to the changes introduced to Parliament on Thursday.

President Helen Kelly says the CTU is unhappy with changes like the 90-day trial period, and the requirement to produce a doctor’s certificate after one day’s sick leave.

Like you, Mike, I think true Christianity is always prepared to bear the cost – to name Christ and Him alone; to stand on biblical principle and teaching even when to do so is unpopular, or worse, may possibly cost your life.

This is why I struggle with those who profess themselves to be Christian but are, for example, alright with liberalising cannibas laws (BlairM), or the destruction of private property (Bryla). And don’t get me started on those who think homosexuality is just a lifestyle choice.

I think a lot of people like to wear the label ‘Christian’ (eg would enter that on the census), but are likely to hear the words “Depart from me … I never knew you” when they stand before the One they so casually profess.

Hurf for all we know Iran could already have a nuke courtesy of the black market of the 90’s.

Even if it doesn’t, it’s got some powerful Russian hardware with serious pointy ends, some of which is capable of nuclear delivery.

It probably launches lots of missiles all the time. Even if it was a provocation, which it probably was, so what? Big deal.

Talking about cartoonists, I’m sick and tired of the Dom Post’s duo of Tom Scott and Broomhead, both unabashed left-wingers (probably their only credential why they find employment at that gasthly newspaper.)

For all his perceived notoriety, Scott is nothing but a boom-box for Labour’s propaganda. Broomhead cannot even draw.

The police protecting their own. The constable convicted of wilfully attempting to pervert the court of justice said she was instructed from above – but later admitted what had happened.

The police will be aware that most young guys will shut up and take a bum rap when up against the police. The tenacity of supporters saw this one through to a belatedly just conclusion.

I don’t very limited experience but have been involved personally in the 70s in a trivial incident. They picked two randomly out of a group of six and blatantly lied in court. It only half worked for them, one defended and got off the charge. I was the other one.

Southern District operations manager Inspector Lane Todd said he was disappointed the two officers had been found guilty of perjury-related charges.

An internal code-of-conduct investigation would be held and both remained suspended on full pay until the investigation was completed.

the Potters never gave up trying to clear Mr Cribb’s name, spending more than $17,000 to fund his defence.

Justice if you have the money, all the while the perpetrators are on full pay.
Doesn’t seem right to me.

Maybe Newtie could persuade Rupert Murdoch to have his partners build some synagogues and churches and end all this unpleasantness.
The stridency with which Fox News personalities attack the downtown Islamic center — red meat for the millions who tune in each night — is an example of the often uneasy relationship and occasionally diverging interests between many of News Corp.’s properties, in this case Fox News and its parent corporation.
For example, News Corp.’s second-largest shareholder, after the Murdoch family, is Prince Alwaleed bin Talal (pictured above ), the nephew of Saudi Arabian King Abdullah, and one of the world’s richest men.

Saudi Arabia, which is ruled by Alwaleed’s uncle King Abdullah, is, of course, an authoritarian petro-monarchy that actually is governed by Sharia law and is known as one of the top global sponsors of terrorism. A spokesperson for the Saudi embassy in Washington says that while Alwaleed is part of the royal family, he isn’t a member of the government, but rather a private citizen.
I doubt all those Fox news patriots know that the same News Corp that’s owned by a Wahhabist Saudi prince just donated a million dollars to the Republican party. Of course they’ll never find out because the only network they watch is the same terrorist funded network that’s doing it.
But if they were to hear about it, considering that they all seem to be so worried about the terrorists coming to kill them in their beds, I would imagine they’d be uncomfortable about getting all their news from a network that’s partially owned by one of “them.” And I’d be very surprised if they were sanguine about a scary Muslim donating to their patriotic political party. Why next thing you know they’ll be trying to build community centers near Ground Zero.
At the very least, this whole thing is very insensitive, don’t you think? After all, some people really hate Muslims and it’s very unpleasant for them to have to watch news networks that are owned by them and be asked vote for a Party that’s funded by them. I’m not saying that Murdoch should be forced to stop donating millions to Republicans or partnering with Saudi princes who believe in Sharia law. I just think it’s common sense that he wouldn’t do it in the first place.

I think it’s fair to say that Murdoch has been outed as a terrorist financier and he should be sent to Gitmo (too late in the night to spell it in full! But for some strange reason it’s in Cuba ) immediately.

It’s up 4 points, reid, and so it should be, but if Labour hangs on it will be thanks to the Green vote and they don’t deserve it. They sold the farm on climate change even as Australia suffers what is looking like a permanent drought.

Anything else is mental thinking.

What the hell do you think is going to happen to Australia’s drought even if all factory emissions stopped throughout the land, tomorrow? Nothing, is the answer I’d expect to hear. So why do it even a little bit?

Your are right reid. It shouldn’t be up 4 pts. It should be 50!

If all emissions in the world stopped tomorrow, Australia could return to normal in a hundred years or so. But they won’t, so it won’t.

Why we should all do our bit is because this oncoming train is not a steam engine, it’s a bullet! And we should all care about what we leave for our kids and grandkids, shouldn’t we?

I’m picking a plus-three degrees temperature rise this century, and the drought will be the least of Australia’s worries.

All i’ve ever heard about McCully (including from noted left winger DPF) since i’ve followed politics in the past several years is encapsulated in that one speech bubble. Ramirez is not quite so neat.
