REO SUPPORT SHOWS CHANGING TIMES

A Maori academic says the widespread support among women, young people and those from non-Pakeha ethnic groups for compulsory Maori in schools should be heeded.

Rawiri Taonui, the head of Maori and indigenous studies at Canterbury University, says the Research New Zealand poll showing 38 percent overall support for reo lessons was a valuable contribution to the debate.

He says older Pakeha males may struggle with the idea, but other groups are changing.

“Seventy percent of Pasifika people believe that Maori language should be a compulsory subject in our schooling system and that’s more than double the number of Pakeha in favour of that,” Mr Taonui says.

He says 20 years ago there was minimal support for compulsory reo in schools, but initiatives like Maori Language Week have changed perceptions.

One thing that you have to credit the Aussies with … their patience. In NZ, a string of defeats such as the Wallabies have suffered would result in a coach’s head on a platter after ritual media disembowelling. Neither the SMH, nor the Courier mail seem to have any criticism of Deans, and they put the blame right where it belongs … the guys who took to the field.

Brian – the reason why there is no ritual disembowelment of Robbie Deans is because nobody cares about Rugby Union in Australia. They care about AFL in most of the country and about Rugby League in Queensland and NSW.
When the Wallabies win against New Zealand it’s nice to know that they can beat little brother at his game. When they lose, they switch channels and it’s not even on the news. Bit like Soccer in NZ really.

Gazzmaniac, yes I know the relative importance of union in Australia which was why I looked to those two papers … no point in even looking in the Age for any comment. However, there are vociferous rugby commentators in Sydney and Brisbane, and while they have plenty to say (“Wasteful Wallabies” and “High Veldt Hoodoo” and “Wallabies Blow Big Lead”) they really do not seem to regard the coach as the target of their scorn.
Here, a single loss by the ABs tends to stir up the “fire Henry” brigade.

Brian – the reason why the “fire Henry” brigage come out every time there is a loss is that IMHO they never should have hired him to start with. John Mitchell was the best performing coach of the All Blacks in the modern era, and they ditched him for a school teacher.

The chemical makers are paid as much as $100,000 or more for every ton they destroy of a potent greenhouse gas, HFC-23. The price for destroying it is based on its being 11,700 times more powerful as a climate-warming gas than carbon dioxide.

But that gas is a byproduct of an ozone-friendly refrigerant, HCFC-22, which those chemical makers also are paid to produce under the U.N.’s ozone treaty. Environmentalists say there is so much money in getting rid of HFC-23 that the chemical makers are overproducing HCFC-22 to have more of the byproduct to destroy.

NDONESIA has issued a red alert after the Sinabung volcano on the island of Sumatra erupted, spewing smoke and ash 1,500 metres into the air.

Thousands of people have fled their homes and a thick blanket of acrid black smoke is shrouding the area, disaster officials said, although no casualties have yet been reported.

“Initially we thought the ash and smoke were triggered by rain but now we know the driving pressure was from magma,” said Surono, head of the nation’s volcano disaster alert centre.

“It’s clearly dangerous so we’ve raised the warning to the highest level, or red level,” he added. “From the crater, it shot smoke and volcanic ash 1,500 metres into the sky.”

A huge event took place today in Washington called “Restoring Honor”, with an estimated 300,000 people marching on Washington organized by Fox anchor Glen Beck. It was not political at all, not organized by any political group, but was a conservative rally aimed at restoring America’s traditional values.

And how did TVNZ report it? With huge bias and criticism, using old sound bites by Glen Beck that made him sound racist, and criticizing him by playing Martin Luther King’s historic speech that took place in the same location, suggesting the messages were at odds. But King’s niece Alveda was at the event (something TVNZ’s report omitted entirely) and she supported it, saying –

“I am attending this rally to help reclaim America,” she told “Good Morning America’s” Ron Claiborne today from Capitol Hill. “I’m joining Glenn to talk about faith, hope, charity, honor. Those are things that America needs to reclaim. Our children need to remember to love each other how to honor each other, their parents, God and their neighbors. I agree with Glenn on all of those principles. So that’s why I’m here. For me it’s principles over politics.”

So, shame on you TVNZ for your biased reporting.

No real mention of what the issues were, just the evil Glen Beck and his hatred of the anointed one. Clarence B. Jones, who served as King’s personal attorney and his speechwriter, said he believes King would not be offended by Beck’s rally but “pleased and honored” that a diverse group of people would come together, almost five decades later, to discuss the future of America.

I wonder what their idea of Utopia looks like. I’ve always wanted to ask Helen Clark that question: if she could have taken her little agenda even further – as far as she wanted to – what her idea of Utopia would be like, and whether that socialist/communist paradise would really even function. Somehow, I doubt it. It’s an experiment with a dead-end.
