I’m often bemused by the extent to which lefties on this site watch Glenn Beck and Fox – apparently under the impression that such are the sources of information for the righties here. Having dumped Sky Digital three years ago I’ve never actually watched one of his shows, even on YouTube, but of course I’ve read coverage of the big “Restoring Honour” rally in D.C yesterday.

In light of that I thought the following article of interest: What Beck Does Right. I thought there were two points he made that were pertinent. The first was about Beck himself.

There are a lot of good people – people with whom I agree on most things – who are put off by Glenn Beck. Sometimes I’m put off by Glenn Beck. There are conclusions he makes about history that I find simplistic, off-center, or just plain wrong. His on-screen persona can be over the top.

No existing model of media success would have led him to do what he is doing today: to teach history on his program, to read passages from America’s early texts, to interview obscure academics and little-known clerics, to talk like a fire-and-brimstone preacher about character.

But here he is, and Fox lets him do it. He gets the ratings with what he offers. He reaches more people in one week, with the kind of truth about our history that will only strengthen the political appeal of modern conservatism, than some more-polished legacy conservatives have reached over their entire careers.

The second was about the reaction of the right to all this – and I think there’s a message for the right-wing in NZ as well:

When we see 500,000 or more people turn out on the Mall at the end of August – in the heat and humidity, in a painful recession, after school and sports have already started in many states – are we going to insist that that’s “not conservatism,” that it’s something we need to triangulate away from and reject, because people prayed to God, got emotional, and talked about character?

And if so, what is it we’re waiting for that we think is better? From what standpoint is it better?

I urge my fellow conservatives not to despise this phenomenon or be disparaging about it. All our futures depend on the character of the people around us. Fear, defensiveness, and moral weakness in the people are the best friends of the tyrant. None of us can resist the siren-call of statist collectivization single-handedly.

I’d never seen League until I came to NZ, and I must say that I love it. It is faster, more open, more exciting than union- but is also more aggressively physical; I have wondered if there is room for a thesis on the disdain of the elite for the “working class game”.

TOM…It was certainly an incredible turnout. TV1 reported it in a disgracefully Socialist propaganda manner writing it off as a kind of minor American redneck affair.. One other indication for the support of Conservatism was that Beck had stated that the costs involved in holding the rally was $600,000. He subsequently received donations of over $5,000,000.

As Kris has been saying for ages, we in NZ also need a restoration of our Character too.
    http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/print/243918

As Sowell says of America, they had the protections of their freedoms built in to the constitution but they have let the progressives chip away at them and even circumnavigate them.
This shows their character on both sides.

It is no coincidence that those who imagine themselves so much wiser and nobler than the rest of us should be at the forefront of those who seek to erode constitutional restrictions on the arbitrary powers of government. How can our betters impose their superior wisdom and virtue on us, when the Constitution gets in the way at every turn, with all its provisions to safeguard a system based on a self-governing people?

To get their way, the elites must erode or dismantle the Constitution, bit by bit, in one way or another. What that means is that they must dismantle America. This has been going on piecemeal over the years, but now we have an administration in Washington that circumvents the Constitution wholesale, with its laws passed so fast that the public cannot know what is in them, its appointment of “czars” wielding greater power than Cabinet members’, without having to be exposed to public scrutiny by going through the confirmation process prescribed by the Constitution for Cabinet members.

Now there is leaked news of plans to change the country’s immigration laws by administrative fiat rather than congressional legislation, presumably because Congress might be unduly influenced by those pesky voters — with their constitutional rights — who have shown clearly that they do not want amnesty and open borders, despite however much our betters do. If the Obama administration gets away with this, and can add a few million illegals to the voting rolls in time for the 2012 elections, that can mean reelection, and with it a continuing and accelerating dismantling of America.

I know the AGW topic is getting a bit old now, and apart from some die hard believers few people really care.

The empirical evidence shows the models are wrong, the missing hot spot never got found, and the sea level today is the same as when they built the Tower of London.

But the climate ‘scientists’ are still trolling away in their caves trying to warm up the cold lifeless corpse that was the scare of catastrophic warming.

“GISS recently modified their pre-2000 historical data, and is now inconsistent with other temperature sets. GISS data now shows a steady warming from 1975-2010, which other data sets do not show. Had GISS not modified their historic data, they would still be consistent with other data sets and would not show warming post-1998″

Did you see the Sunday hash up report on the BBC Gaza affair,……

I suppose I should be glad that someone is willing to watch TV1 et al but frankly I think anybody who does so and critiques them from a right-wing POV is utterly wasting their time. Have they not made it clear over the years that they cannot stomach your views any more than can the denizens of Public Address? What’s the point of engaging them any further. You think they’ll start showing both sides of the ideological argument on any given issue, rather than the warmed-over National vs. Labour or Republican vs. Democrat bunfights?

I suggest hitting them where it hurts: stop watching them and watch things like PJTV. Alternative media is burying the bastards anyway – keep pushing along those lines as you’re already doing by being here instead of at The Herald. Make it clear to everybody you know that you see no point engaging with the vapid, shallow morons of the MSM and also make it clear that you’re not going to play the narrative game, i.e getting into arguments about what they want to argue.

At worst, they’ll carry on pandering to what our Left-wing citizens assure us is the “centre-left majority” in this country, but at least you will have the satisfaction of not giving or generating money (via the viewership figures needed to prove to advertisers their worth) for them (aside from the tax dollars you’re forced to supply TVNZ).

At best, it may turn out that the right is in the majority (or a significant enough minority) that the MSM is badly hurt by the loss of viewers and readers – to the extent that they either start reporting both sides of the issue or go broke. I hold little hope that it will change them, but I see no alternative, and at least you will also have the satisfaction of not legitimising them in any way.

More physical, hmm, try having the Taranaki forward pack stomp their way over you and you may change your mind on that.
League a simpler game, well yes it is and it needs to be for those taking part.

Of course when playing union we did not have young ladies end up in an ambulance when out on the ran, unlike a league team I can name.

Disdain of the elite, have not seen it in NZ, but yes it did take place in Aus for good reason when I played for Mossman.
The league types were boasting that ONE of their players had become a Doctor, it was damn dangerous getting a cut in union in Sydney with all those Surgeons in training wanting to practice in sewing one up.

Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person really died.

That reminded me of a bit from the beginning of Fletch Won, by Gregory McDonald (thought I’d better add the link, since I am excerpting it) –

“So then I assigned you to writing obituaries.”
“You know I want to write sports, Frank. That’s why I came in to see you this morning.”
“Not the toughest job in the world, writing obituaries. You answer the phone, listen politely, sometimes you have to check a few facts.”
“I’m very good at checking facts.”
Frank held up a piece of paper. His hand quivered and his eyes shook as he read the first paragraph from it. “ ‘Ruth Mulholland died peacefully today, having accomplished nothing in her fifty-six years.’ Did you write that?”
“It was a fact, Frank. I checked.”
“Fletcher, one of the points in your writing obituaries is in our being able to print them.”

“I kept asking her sister, What did she ever do? The sister kept talking. But I was listening, you see. This person, Ruth Mulholland, never graduated from anywhere, never got married, never had a baby, never held a job, never even supported herself. I mean, in fifty-six years she never accomplished a damned thing. Finally, I asked the sister, Did she ever make anybody a sweater? Cook a pan of brownies for anybody? Or even for herself? The sister kept saying, No, no, in fact Ruthie never did a damned thing in her life. I said, Well, is that what I should print? And the sister said, Well, yes, I guess that’s the truth about Ruthie. I checked the facts, Frank. Ruthie never applied for Social Security, or a driver’s license; she didn’t even support her local beauty shop!”
    “Fletcher—”
“What, there’s not supposed to be any truth in obituaries? When someone has won the Nobel Prize we print that in an obituary. When someone accomplishes exactly nothing in life, why don’t we print that?

The Department of Conservation say a Maori protest group has booby trapped roads in the Urewera National Park.

Complaints have been surfacing of 75mm nails sticking out of the Okahu Valley access road.

The group associated with Ngati Tawhaki, a hapu of Tuhoe, want a halt to 1080 poisoning in the area as it claims the land is theirs.

Area Manager John Sutton says they’re unsure how many traps have been laid but some mountain bikers have given an indication.

He says they had 10 punctures a month on a 9km stretch of road which is pretty high odds considering the width of a tyre.

John Sutton says police are the only ones who could carry out some proactive action.

The day I stopped watching Cricket

    19th March 2007
    Some of you may remember me writing this;

“The Pakistan cricket coach has died following calls for his death from typical everyday cricket fans back home in Pakistan. What a thankless task it must have been trying to manage that shower of shit, Drug cheats, sledgers, ball tamperers and all round scum bag islamists.
No doubt the filth that passes for a cricket fan in the Islamic republic/ shithole of Pakistan will be assigning credit for this tragic death to their God.

Bob Woolmer was a fine man, cricketer and cricket coach. He did a fantastic job with South Africa and Warwickshire and was probably in line to replace Norman Stanley as the England coach.
    Woolmer dead”

What can you say? Not much more than I said above really.
The ICC will do nothing of course, they never do. Shit, they let them off killing their coach, a front page open and shut case of massive cheating for cash on the front page of the News of the World is nothing compared to MURDER.

I am going to resume watching Cricket, but for one reason only.
    My Bucket list.

Have ticked most of them off, in fact there is only two left.
As I am never likely to fluke a double date with Claudia Schiffer and Elle Macpherson I shall have to settle for the five day pass I have for the Boxing Day test in Melbourne this year.

The fact that there will not be any filthy, cheating, murdering scum from Shitistan on the field will make it tolerable.

Any attempts to enter reasoned debate on this thread will be treated with the goggle eyed frothing and hate filled ranting that our older readers may fondly remember.

Isn’t it predictable. Even before Liarbore vacated access to our money, all of us were predicting widespread union activity. Well they’ve waited, haven’t they, until they, fat like leeches bloated with the blood of our money, seize what the fools consider to be the right moment. I can’t wait. I understand Gerry and Murray are in charge of the overall counter-strategy so I’m very sanguine, indeed.
