Mobile Kiwiblog

August 16th, 2010 at 12:00 pm by David Farrar

Thanks to Mobify, Inspire Net and No Shortcuts Design, there is now a mobile phone version of Kiwiblog.

The URL is http://m.kiwiblog.co.nz and it is customised for better viewing on mobile phones, and to use up less bandwidth. The sidebars are gone, and the photos are smaller. If you are on the mobile site, you can click through to the full site at the top right.

At this stage we have not set it up for auto-detect, as I am assuming people are happy enough to choose the full or mobile site for themselves. But can do so, if people want it.

    YAY!!!
Mind you I have been able to read KB ok on my Nokia E63 by zooming down to 75% and choosing text only (no images).
Just testing out the mobile site now, load time is faster and it’s nice not having to zoom out or do sideways scrolling.
    Good work everyone involved!

There is also an excellent worpress plug in that displays all posts in an easy to read format (automatic that you can override and go to the full site) – http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wptouch/

Works like a charm (and free).

    I love it!

I use a Nokia N97 and, interestingly enough, last night it automatically detected your mobile site. I’ve updated my bookmark anyway.

One special request though: could you have links to the previous and next blog posts at both the top and the bottom of the page? It’s really annoying to scroll down through the comments (thank goodness Philu is history!), only to then have to go back to the top to click through to the next blog post. I thought you might want to make this change to your full site too.

Brilliant! Now I have something to do when I’m out of the office and bored. Which is almost always. Now all I need is a bumper sticker saying “Danger: driver may be absorbed in Kiwiblog”. I consider that to be fair warning to these Australians that I may be otherwise occupied in their interminable bloody traffic jams. What happens next is therefore entirely their fault…

Ditto and a button to go to the first page please.
    Thankyou.

Loads fine, but when I log in via iPhone, it loads the full site again

What I mean by that is that the mobile site loads well on my iphone, but to make a post via iPhone I have to log in (obviously), and when I have logged in, it takes me to the full version of the site (not the mobile version). If I reload the mobile version after that, I am still not logged in. So really, it’s impossible for me to log in on the mobile version.
