Fat?

October 28th, 2010 at 4:00 pm by David Farrar

Readers may recall that Hone Harawira called Rodney various things, including fat, a week or so ago.

A reader alerted me to this video. Is this the same Rodney? I suspect Hone would struggle to bench press 110 kgs.

And here’s another – 180 kgs in a deadlift.

110 for 3 reps isnt bad going. That would calculate to a 1 rep max of about 120kg.

Its not up to Dime standard, but pretty good!

Sorry DPF, no need to get all punitive. You can play drop the soap too if you want.

It seems odd that Murray uses abusive language and gets no demerits, yet I suggest he fancies getting sweaty with Rodders and get 10. Does this mean gay jokes are out? If so, we’ll be disappointed that you won’t be posting on Carter anymore.

WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY!!!!

Why do people think that when they start going to the gym, they are automatically required to wear some of the ugliest attire ever invented! You don’t need to glow in the fucken dark when you go to the gym, most gym’s I’ve been to are surprisingly well lit – but no, some late 90′s reject just has to grace us with the floro green/yellow/pink ensemble! Gets to the point a man needs to wear Polaroids just to go to the gym!

FFS Rodney! I’m sure there were other pants in stock that you could have brought!

    Looks like 8 x 10kg plates + 2 x 5kg plates + 20kg bar (I think most weight bars are 20kg in most gyms)..

    8 x 10 = 80kg
    2 x 5kg = 10kg
That makes 90kg, add the bar and you’ve got 110….

I actually thought the larger plates were 20′s or 15′s, but that would be far more than stated.

It’s about 80 on the bar + the bar (Olympic bar) = 100kg or thereabouts. I always counted only the weight on the bar. Still 80kg in my eyes. Not bad though.

Interestingly, I can’t ever say I’ve done a 1 rep max bench but have done about 120kg for reps soooo…As Jack5 says short arms help in the bench press, so as a “long” armed individual I’m happy with it!

Actually, at the beginning of the video it states 195kg – which would be right:

8×20 kg plates, 2×5 kg plates, 2×2.5 kg plates, and the bar at 20 kg = 195 kg

That’s pretty impressive for a little guy like Rodney; must be over twice his body weight.
From memory my best one off when training regularly was about 155 kg with a body weight of round 95 kg. Admittedly I was generally aiming for the 8-10 rep range over three to four sets, rather than training specifically for power lifting’s 1-2 reps (too much stress on joints and the usually associated non-ideal form).

180kg deadlift isnt bad without straps. my grip starts to give out around there when i do high reps. hes wearing a belt though whch is a bit slack.

pretty good though. hes not a huge man.

Didn’t really notice the deadlift vid., excellent lift Rodney! I used to do 140kg for about 8-12 reps, strict. Again no one rep max. Man, deadlifts are like squats (an evil exercise which I refuse to do), they can put you on your arse & you know you’ve done a workout. Little wonder Rodders can pull those fit squash players.

“Redneck is historically a derogatory slang term to refer to poor white Southern farmers in the United States.[1] It is similar in meaning to “cracker” (especially regarding Georgia and Florida), “hillbilly” (especially regarding Appalachia)[2] and “white trash”.[3][4] The most common American usage, referring to the poor rural white Southerner, is probably derived from individuals having a red neck caused by working outdoors in the sun. A citation from 1893 provides a definition as “poorer inhabitants of the rural districts…men who work in the field, as a matter of course, generally have their skin burned red by the sun, and especially is this true of the back of their necks”.[5] In recent decades the term expanded its meaning to mean bigoted, loutish and opposed to modern ways, and has often been used to attack Southern conservatives and segregationists”

funny how a red neck is now an “assimilationist”

“15. Government retaliated by fostering racist animosity against Māori, using assimilated Māori against their own relations. Carries on to this day. NZ Race Relations Commissioner aware but unable to remedy.?

Rodneys not short, as such…he only looks up a little bit to look me in the eye and Im 6 ’2.

And what “troughing”has he engaged in…? A combined set of work/personal trips he was quite entitled to go on with Keys blessing and the cost of which hes paid back even though he didn’t have to.And he’s more than saved the taxpayer way,way more than that over the yeras by driving that smart car and stopping mad state spending like the parlimentary palace and pulling the IRD into line from their taxpayer suicide inducing highs (lows) of the 90′s.

This taxpayer is happy for Rodney Hide to have a little indulgence on my dollar…unlike many others he’s earned it.

The problem, James, is that many others didn’t make their name busting such perks. That’s where Rodney went wrong. If he’d stayed on the booze, stayed happily overweight, but witty, loud, full of fight, and perk busting, we would all have been better off.

Last year I was in the parliamentary gym and the Maori MPs from all parties swaggered in full of braggadocio. Of course, they weren’t there to train. They were arguing who was the strongest. They then had a brief shoulder press comp. It was embarassing. They were as weak as. Full of talk. I would guess Darren Hughes and Phil Goff who work out with pink dumbbells would nail them!!

My guess is Grumpy’s an ex-military guy living in Otago, happily married to a Pakeha lady. He seems to know a bit about business, and seems to have children serving in the army.
