While I don’t disagree with Holmes sentiments I thought his “interview” of Kelly on Q&A was the worst I have seen, he missed a great opportunity due to his foaming at the mouth. Only John Barnett’s presence made the segment worth watching.

Something that is long overdue….

Big shake-up for state housing

State housing is set for its biggest shake-up in decades with the Government poised to abandon the “state house for life” policy.

With thousands stuck on waiting lists and a third of state houses occupied for more than 10 years by the same family, time-limited tenancies could be introduced as early as next year – initially for new tenants, but likely to be rolled out to all tenants except pensioners and the most vulnerable tenants over time.

Housing Minister Phil Heatley said the options were yet to go to the Cabinet so no decisions had been made, but he was considering changes including three-year, five-year and 10-year tenancy terms with a right of review after that time.

It is a significant change from the previous policy that tenants are not moved on, regardless of a change in circumstances.

The shake-up will not end there. The Government will also look at moving on singles or couples who stay in their three, four and five-bedroom state homes long after children have left home.

State housing should be a help, not a permanent handout.

Don’t say we’re actually growing up in this country and interpreting news sensibly and accuratly – rather than reverting to the “Left-good right-bad” mindsets that have characterised NZ events and politics for so long.

Their silence on the Hobbit kerfuffel has been deafening and even more amazing there has been no comment by them on the Housing Corporation shake up. I expected to see them defending the right of people to live in state provided rental accomdation for their life time.

I’ve always cringed when the media bangs on about how great Kiwis are at innovation and the No. 8 wire mentality. I think, kiwis can be held up as clever monkeys to be looked on with bemusement as they fashion crude tools to assist their daily lives.

I mean really, tell me what we have invented that changed the world? Even kiwis that did invent stuff usually did so in foreign R&D labs.

Google NZ sold $150,000,000 of advertising to NZ customers.

I wouldn’t have a clue about their overheads, but, I’d imagine they’d make a few million bucks profit from NZ operations at the very least.

So, you’d think they pay a little bit of tax.

But, according to the Stuff website, Google NZ paid just $7726 tax in the last financial year.

How many elderly hip operations could have been done if google paid the fair amount of tax? How many lives could have been saved?

What happened to Googles “do no evil?” mantra?

I’ve heard google respond that they are just doing what everyone else does. Like that makes it right.

As sad as it is that the road toll is currently at seven some good will hopefully come of it that the Police won’t be able to say a low toll is due to their rediculous 4kmh tolerance. Maybe those 7 (+?) deserve some recognition as they have hopefully done a service for New Zealand.

Having appointed Penny Hulse as his deputy mayor, Mr Brown is exercising his executive power to finalise the chairs and members of the council committees. Who gets the top jobs and therefore bigger salaries will be a test of his leadership and a pointer to what he hopes will be a “collaborative” council to deliver his vision.

The base salary for councillors is $80,000. The salaries for committee chairs have yet to be set.

The committee structure will be announced on Thursday.

Brown should give chair roles to at least two centre-right councillors. That would show unity and keep the wolves at bay for a while. That’s what my advice to him would be. My choices would be Cameron Brewer and Penny Webster.

Anyway, the countdown is on to the start of the Suuuuuuuuuuper City………….3,2,1 go!

Yes well we have discussed this many times before. All Transactions are booked to Ireland and just are like those that import oversea’s products such as music on line and pay no GST because they use a credit card or paypal etc to do the transaction.
Now I always considered GST to be a good Tax but more and more I am moving to the idea of a transaction tax.
Simple, easy to charge, no distortions, and the more we do on line the more necessary it will become. Better than GST because it captures everything and there are simply no exceptions. Can’t be manipulated like gst.

Its a good subject for solid debate.

Yep – if you want to observe how the great socialist/Marxist experiment is working out you need go no further than the state of California. How China’s taking over Africa, and why the West should be VERY worried

On June 5, 1873, in a letter to The Times, Sir Francis Galton, the cousin of Charles Darwin and a distinguished African explorer in his own right, outlined a daring (if by today’s standards utterly offensive) new method to ‘tame’ and colonise what was then known as the Dark Continent.

‘My proposal is to make the encouragement of Chinese settlements of Africa a part of our national policy, in the belief that the Chinese immigrants would not only maintain their position, but that they would multiply and their descendants supplant the inferior Negro race,’ wrote Galton.

‘I should expect that the African seaboard, now sparsely occupied by lazy, palavering savages, might in a few years be tenanted by industrious, order-loving Chinese, living either as a semidetached dependency of China, or else in perfect freedom under their own law.’

Despite an outcry in Parliament and heated debate in the august salons of the Royal Geographic Society, Galton insisted that ‘the history of the world tells the tale of the continual displacement of populations, each by a worthier successor, and humanity gains thereby’.

A controversial figure, Galton was also the pioneer of eugenics, the theory that was used by Hitler to try to fulfil his mad dreams of a German Master Race.

Eventually, Galton’s grand resettlement plans fizzled out because there were much more exciting things going on in Africa.

But that was more than 100 years ago, and with legendary explorers such as Livingstone, Speke and Burton still battling to find the source of the Nile – and new discoveries of exotic species of birds and

animals featuring regularly on newspaper front pages – vast swathes of the continent had not even been ‘discovered’.

Yet Sir Francis Galton, it now appears, was ahead of his time. His vision is coming true – if not in the way he imagined.

An astonishing invasion of Africa is now under way.

In the greatest movement of people the world has ever seen, China is secretly working to turn the entire continent into a new colony.

Reminiscent of the West’s imperial push in the 18th and 19th centuries – but on a much more dramatic, determined scale – China’s rulers believe Africa can become a ‘satellite’ state, solving its own problems of over-population and shortage of natural resources at a stroke.

With little fanfare, a staggering 750,000 Chinese have settled in Africa over the past decade. More are on the way.

The strategy has been carefully devised by officials in Beijing, where one expert has estimated that China will eventually need to send 300 million people to Africa to solve the problems of over-population and pollution.

The plans appear on track. Across Africa, the red flag of China is flying. Lucrative deals are being struck to buy its commodities – oil, platinum, gold and minerals. New embassies and air routes are opening up. The continent’s new Chinese elite can be seen everywhere, shopping at their own expensive boutiques, driving Mercedes and BMW limousines, sending their children to exclusive private schools.

The pot-holed roads are cluttered with Chinese buses, taking people to markets filled with cheap Chinese goods. More than a thousand miles of new Chinese railroads are crisscrossing the continent, carrying billions of tons of illegally-logged timber, diamonds and gold.

New horizons? Mugabe has said:’We must turn from the West and face the East’
The trains are linked to ports dotted around the coast, waiting to carry the goods back to Beijing after unloading cargoes of cheap toys made in China.

Confucius Institutes (state-funded Chinese ‘cultural centres’) have sprung up throughout Africa, as far afield as the tiny land-locked countries of Burundi and Rwanda, teaching baffled local people how to do business in Mandarin and Cantonese.

Conversely of course, Google provides hundreds of millions of dollars worth (at least) of services to New Zealanders absolutely free.

As a private user I use Google all the time to find information, to compare costs of purchases, to use its satellite and street maps, its email service etc. And I use Youtube for music, lectures and how-tos. My consumer surplus must run into the hundreds of dollars each year.
And it is equally essential as business. No IT person now functions without Google. It lets them quickly identify problems and just as quickly come up to speed on different tools etc. It has had a transforming effect and drastically increased productivity.

So in fact that’s probably billions of dollars worth of utility provided free to New Zealanders and New Zealand businesses. How many elderly hip operations could you buy for that amount of money if people had to pay? How many lives could have been saved?

I would suggest they are biding their time until the US economy truly flattens

and China can fully colonise with little resistance.

Fiji has been bribed by China over a period of time for shipping berths.

So far Fiji has resisted. I feel Liarbour strongly attacked and made a case of Fiji to take them out of the Commonwealth to force their hand towards China.

In the present economic scenario, what solution can there be.

Fatalism dictates China will bide their time with its wealth and future projections could see them transferring troops to Africa.

The Communist cause is no stranger to Africa and the red flag could win a bloodless coup supported by African govts.

Every bullet fored by a US trooper has been paid for by Bejing. If the US runs out of reserves, and owing billions to China, thier days of resistance to Chinese imperialism are over.

It seems the Obama administration is signifying its intention to submit.

What is your definition of an extremist? Do you limit it to Wikipedia’s, or is your definition broader? Do you include anyone who’s view of anything is more extreme than yours, or do you limit it to just what is considered more extreme than what the majority of people think? In other words, do you consider the word extremist to be a political label or a description of a person’s views?

The most apt definition of an extremist given where we are discussing this topic would be Redbaiter.

In Redbaiters world only he has he answers, only he has the solution, so much so that he has taken to speaking in the third person.

Redbaiter has no time for the opinions of others, he cannot and will not debate an issue as he is often unable to defend his stance, when he does it is usually in the form of cut and paste given that he very rarely has an original thought.

Often people like Redbaiter are disciples of others, they muddle along in life, not quite sure what it is that pisses them off so much, then, they stumble across a person who clarifies it all for them, in Redbaiters case it was Glenn Beck.

You see the same style or type of post from him time and time again, anybody who speaks out against him is dealt with in classic Alynski style, those that come a bit close to exposing him for the fraud (or nut job) that he undoubtedly is are subject to the most vociferous abuse.

So there you go Lucia, to me an extremist is somebody who has often had a near religious experience, so touched are they with their “awakening” that they just cannot believe that everybody else does not feel the same way, of course the real problem comes when those people obtain positions of power.

Thankfully, that will never happen in Redbaiters case.

I’ve noticed in that Wikipedia link this sentence :

The act of labeling a person, group or action as extremist is sometimes claimed to be a technique to further a political goal — especially by governments seeking to defend the status quo, or political centrists.

The Tea Party movement is a major threat to the status quo. Just imagine if something similar got off the ground here. National would be dead in the water, or needing to massively revise it’s direction. Actually become a conservative party (as many think they are) in order to survive.

The Tea party’s insistence on pushing Sarah Palin is the best example of their blinkered vision, a recent poll had Obama’s approval ratting at 46%, however, when you offered those same voters the choice between Obama and Sarah Palin his support level shot up to 53%.

The only thing the Tea party movement is a threat to is the right, in doing so they are going to see Obama serve out his two terms in office and the rest of the world just cannot afford that to happen.

The basic point about the appalling situation in the States is that while anyone can get emergency care by going to a hospital about 25% of the population cannot get elective care unless they have the money to pay for it. That includes going to a doctor. This is not leftwing propaganda Redbaiter but the facts of the matter. Writing as one with connections to the American health service. Even illegals get it from hospitals.

What in Gods name does Stephen Joyce think he’s doing?
Donating another$55 million to wasteful universities whist taking it away from trade training. Taking it from the very people who need it to give to the intelligency to waste.
Right now we need to be training young people in practical work skills like engineering, cooking, catering, and a whole host of skills that cater for the non academic young people and he stealing even those meagre funds from that sector.
Yea Gods we even need to train truck drivers with a very big serious shortage looming and a $5000 bill for a license.

We need to train broadband techies, power line techies, etc etc. Thats done in the workshop and on the job. No nerd will do these things. It will be fun to allocate 1.5 billion to super fast latest whizz broadband but have no one capable of connecting the cables.
Really, I thought Joyce had some brain power but?
