So much for Key’s promise that we would be followers and not leaders in extracting money from the electorate for the Climate Change Swindle.

Climate Change Negotiations Minister Tim Groser has been asked to lead a key strand of the climate talks which have just begun in Cancun, Mexico.

The talks he has been asked to facilitate at Cancun relate to the issue of measurement, reporting and verification (MRV).

This must be because NIWA did such a wonderful job at MRV………………..or maybe it’s because we are the first to subjugate ourselves to the will of the UN.

Mawm,

Tim Groser was New Zealands chief agricultural negotiator in the GATT Uruguay round before being promoted to Chief Negotiator midway through negotiations. Since then Groser has served as New Zealand’s Ambassador to the World Trade Organization and as the WTO’s chairman of agricultural negotiations. He was heavily involved in the Doha round of discussions.

This is standard practice in multilateral negotations and it means we now stand a chance of exerting some influence over process by sitting in the Chair’s chair. We are now much better placed to try to limit the fallout from this latest attempt at redistributive economic sabotage.

I like your optimism, although in this case it could be unfounded.

Isn’t NZ already sabotaging its economy with the imposition of the new tax, the ETS? Aren’t we down the path of economic redistribution already?

We shouldn’t forget either that Smith and Key have already announced a future review of this dreadful tax, so the worst is yet to come. Have we ever seen a tax abolished or reduced by any government? Labour-lite is not an exception to the rule.

Agreed, Manolo. We are definitely already down the path of economic redistribution with regard to AGW.

It probably is more a case of wishful thinking (although it is still standard operating procedure), but it’s the only chance we’ve got – as long as Groser does what he needs to. He’s a real tough cookie though, unlike that wet week Smith. I’d be running for cover if Smith was ever sent in there. Then we really would have a scenario of “the worst is yet to come”. We shall see how Groser games it, but he’s not given to flights of redistributive ETS fancy like Smith and Key.

SSB, my point is Groser will not be able to do that. He must be under stern instructions from his boss Key to not rock the boat, to listen (but not upset) the majority of third world countries, which see AGW as a tool of economic redistribution.

If Labour-lite were not believers of this big con, why did they impose the ETS tax on all New Zealanders? Just read Key and Smith’s speeches on this matter before the election to realise the magnitude of their betrayal.

The husband of Maori Party MP Rahui Katene resigned as the head of the Mental Health Commission in 2008 after he was confronted over using commission money for personal spending.
Dr Selwyn Katene confirmed yesterday that he left the job in December 2008 after paying back about $1500 for personal spending such as use of taxi chits.
“There were some items of expenditure that were of a personal nature which were inadvertently not reimbursed. I paid that money back.”
Dr Katene also used office resources for non-work purposes, including photocopying – understood to be related to the Maori Party – for which he had provided the paper.

Palin beyond the fairytale.

Sarah Palin now says she thinks she can beat Obama.

Maybe she can, but 2012 is a long way off, and there is a nominating process that is intense. Several other serious political players think they can beat her and will wage full-scale political war against her if she tries.

I wrote a previous column under the headline: “Don’t underestimate Palin for 2012 run”.
If I were to title this one, it would be “Sarah, don’t overestimate your chances!”

You’re a media star and a great curiosity. You were plucked out of political obscurity because of the whim of presidential contender John McCain, who didn’t know you and made you into an overnight sensation. You performed well for three weeks in the campaign, did better than expected against Joe Biden in the debate and then you self-destructed.

You clearly weren’t ready for prime time, but neither was your running mate.

You can be a contender for the Republican nomination in 2012, but you’re a long way from being the nominee. You’re going to have to beat some very formidable candidates with way more experience and far superior knowledge on issues foreign and domestic. And to rate your chances today, I would put them at “possible” but not “probable.” It’s an all-uphill battle.

Right now, polls indicate you wouldn’t carry your home state of Alaska.

But let’s do this a step at a time – current goal is Dancing With the Stars.

Not that those suffering from PDS will care much about the history of GOP candidates in recent decades – but for others who do, the following is an interesting condensed history of what might be called The Tina Fey approach. Too Dumb To Be President.

I grew up laughing at Chevy Chase’s portrayal of Jerry Ford (SNL clips seen on NZ TV only occasionally of course) and scoffing at Reagan, but even as somebody interested in US politics I did not learn of the brutal character assassination of Barry Goldwater until the mid-1990’s. Sadly funny in light of the fact that I wanted Clinton to win in ’92 partly as pay back for what I felt had been the lousy treatment of Dukakis in the ’88 Presidential election. But compared to Goldwater’s ordeal:

Barry Goldwater, the first modern conservative to win a GOP presidential nomination in 1964, would have been lucky to be tagged as being merely too dumb to be president. He was also said to be, according to Time magazine, “psychologically unfit to be president,” “emotionally unstable,” “immature,” “cowardly,” “grossly psychotic,” “paranoid,” a “mass murderer,” “amoral and immoral,” a “chronic schizophrenic” and “dangerous lunatic.”

One psychiatrist breezily announced Goldwater had a “strong identification with the authoritarianism of Hitler, if not identification with Hitler himself.”

Actually there was a largish group of psychiatrists who were “consulted” for their opinions (sight unseen of the human in question) that led to some of these assessments. That was TIME in the 1960’s when it was still a powerful and influential force.

Suffice to say that nowadays I take no notice of any Democrat complaints about “Swiftboating” and such like.

Good to see that Visa Len’s Council is arguing with the owners of the recently demolished and formerly about to be heritage knock shop regarding removal of the corpse.

But rest easy citizens. The Auckland Heritage Protection Trust is hovering around just in case anyone makes off with any of the heritage bricks. (Stuff if you’re interested – I can’t do the linky thingy.) Why does this make me think of Monty Python?

Judging who is not Too Dumb To Be President is up to the electorate (and dollars), maybe it’s more pertinent to consider who is Too Dumb To Be A Voter.

Political character assassinations have been around for a bit longer than Palin.

She is for the religious rights version of “freedom” and “liberty”, the reality is that the religious right will remove most freedoms from the groups they oppose.

A coroner’s report:

Coroner calls for glacier restrictions

A coroner has called on Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson to restrict access to two West Coast glaciers after two brothers were crushed to death in an “unthinkable tragedy” last year.

As part of his findings into the deaths regional coroner Richard McElrea recommended Wilkinson “take steps” to create bylaws to restrict or close public access to the terminal face of the Fox Glacier.

Anyone who breached the bylaws could be instantly fined, he wrote.

And another tragedy:

‘It’s not an easy place to get out of’
Long-serving North Shore politician George Wood said a popular Takapuna swimming spot was dangerous – especially when swimmers jumped into the crater lake from the quarry cliff.

The North Shore councillor and former mayor said the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board would probably look at solutions for a “very sorry” situation.

These are both sad cases, as are many others. But we can’t impose another law whenever someone accidentally dies. It’s getting ridiculous.

I have been on the Shore for a long time, seen 4 bodies hauled out of that spring over the years. There are signs. How do you protect the terminaly stupid? There is only one person at fault and he is removed from the gene pool.
