Pansy gone

December 14th, 2010 at 10:51 am by David Farrar

At a 10.30 am press conference Pansy Wong announced she is resigning effective 17 January 2011. She will not take any pay from 20 December.

This means a by-election, probably in late February 2011.

Pansy, subject to leave, will make her valedictory speech to the House this afternoon.

Pansy won the seat with a 10,872 majority. Even with the traditional swing against the Government, I can’t see it swapping hands. In fact the challenge for Labour may be to come second – in 2008 their candidate got only 21% of the vote and ACT’s Kenneth Wang got 15%.

UPDATE: John Key has announced by-election dates of Sat 5 March for the ballot. Nominations will close Tue 8 Feb.

About time Wong leaves Parliament. Ministerial duties were too much for a woman of limited capacity and complete lack of judgement on how to separate private from official affairs.

    Good riddance.

Lucky she made the announcement today, as Bill English prepares to inform the country of Nationals failure to keep the deficit in check.

What will the media focus on today I wonder?

Wong was just a politician, doing what politicians felt like they were entitled to do. A bit like that Chris Carter guy. He felt he was entitled to this travel lark as much as Wong felt she was allowed to go to China and say that she worked for the NZ government (which was factually correct at the time). In regards to MP’s allowances I don’t really have a huge issue with it – these are people that run our country after-all – when in session on one of nationals many sessions under urgency they work longer hours than many of us with our 2 cents would do, and when they suggest something that us riff-raff, if you will don’t agree with, then we go out of our way to crucify them. It just has to be transparent.

I’m not much of a fan of Wong I have to admit – but that is probably more down to my prejudice against Aucklanders. To see someone, a minister no less, to lose their job over such a small amount of money is quite disappointing.

Unless there is actually more to this tale. I suspect there is, but would be as trivial as this $400 oversight was.

I am saddenned by this outcome, and disgusted by comments like those of Pollywog.

The only proven allegation against Mrs Wong is that while she and her husband were on a private visit to China (and the taxpayer subsidy for this was a part of her salary package, so totally legit.) they made a side trip costing $296 so her husband could sign a business deal.

That action was wrong, but the attacks on her were vitriolic, and way out of proportion to that sin. And the price she has paid – the end of a 14 year plus political career – is a very heavy one.

She may not have been a shining star in the political firmament, but she has tried to do good to the best of her abilities (like most MPs). I note too that the investigation reported she had usually been unusually scrupulous about her behaviour, and both she and her husband travelled less using the perk than the average MP and spouse.

Politics can be very cruel. She has my sympathy.

    DRHILL,

However, the level of indiecretion here does pale into comparison when compared to what we have seen tolerated by Labour, and at the highest levels. Feild notwithstanding, we have had Paintergate, Speedgate, The Lying in Unison debacle, the illegal election spending which was retrospectively made legal by the very party which broke the law.

Labour can cry foul all they wish to, and while in the case of Pansy Wong, they may have a point, they have no moral high ground.

No doubt He Whose Name Cannot be Spoken will pounce on things like those spelled out in the link below, especially as the economy tightens and people look for scapegoats.

The Foreign Affairs Select Committee chairman, Nat MP John Hayes, said on Radio NZ this morning to Kathryn Ryan that a recommendation for leniency to overstayers has support from all political parties in the House of Representatives. This will no doubt be to the liking of He Whose Name Cannot be Spoken.

The Ryan interview with Hayes and an immigration consultant on Radio NZ Nine to Noon is worth listening to. You’ll get entertainment value from the blow-up between the rather dogmatic and headmasterly Hayes and a feisty Ryan. She got so pissed of she virtually shut down the interview. Hayes was once a High Commissioner in Papua New Guinea and Ambassador to Pakistan and Iraq. Regardless of any diplomatic skills he may have, Hayes’ skill at handling the news media is abysmal.

Also coming up to the undoubted pleasure of He Whose Name Cannot be Spoken is an economic mess in Tonga. According to a recent report by the NZ journalist with the best knowledge of the Pacific, the Tongans think NZ will bail it out from zillions of debt to China.

Well as one of their number once said – diddums. As DPF reported only yesterday there are already 12 known candidates for the National nomination for Northland. Add to that candidates from other parties, independents etc and you’ll have around 20 people all keen to take on this work you claim is so arduous and thankless. And that’s just one electorate. Those people lining up to replace John Carter know what the terms and conditions of employment are. If they don’t like it – or figure they can always just rort a bit extra once they get in – then they can piss off.

Have just read the Herald story, my take on her exit statement:

    1. Zero contrition for abuse of taxpayer funds

    2. Tries to sickeningly twist the situation so that we should be sorry for her:

“It would not have been possible without my husband Sammy’s unrelenting support. As a consequence, his business interests were severely curtailed.”

    3. Zero contrition for abuse of taxpayer funds

    4. Seems to be saying that as her husbands business is harmed, a little dipping into the public trough to fund it should be justified

    5. Tries to play up her (negligible) political achievements as the result of personal ability, not the politically correct tokenism it really is

    6. Zero contrition for abuse of taxpayer funds

Pansy Wong, get fucked. You will not be missed.

This might be a futile effort now Wong has resigned…

    Labour launches Pansy Wong website

Labour has questioned the thoroughness of the inquiry by Hugh McPhail, calling for Prime Minister John Key to refer the case to Auditor-General Lyn Provost.

In a post on Labour’s Red Alert website yesterday, MP Trevor Mallard said the party continued to receive information that raised questions about the completeness of the McPhail report.

Mr Mallard said that information was being loaded on to a new website, which also listed a number of questions Labour said the McPhail report had not addressed adequately.

It’s a pity they can’t put this much effort into positive political pursuits, it’s all becoming very tiresome.

Goff said her resignation proves whatever he is claiming, it doesn’t prove anything other than Wong wants out. The rhetoric overkill makes it all look petty petulance.

Perhaps National should launch a website inquiring into wither Hodgson or Mallard have enough brain cells to be employed as MP’s and where the alleged brain cells may reside.

In Trev’s case we all know the answer to the last part of the question.

    Now about Pansie.
Give the matter some thought. Pansy is the first politician this term to make a clear decision, no fucking about. Why should anyone put up with the abuse and vitriol that is expounded on a daily basis both from within and without Parliament?
Irrespective of the assumed indescressions its a fail game. If any of you were in the same position after 14 years of public life you would say “well stuff this I don’t need it in my life” I out of here. Many of you do it with work or other organizations that you belong too.
So, some praise to Pansy for moving on ina clear cut manner.
The irony is that so far no other polly has had the guts nor fortitude to quit. Oh no Labours lot have either been put on fuck off leave and sit somewhere else or just like Hawkins and Anderton stay there for the money. Carter at the Nat’s isn’t any better. Stay to collect the pension.
If you are quitting then quit.

It poses a test to Key, obviously there are some of his camp followers who dislike his management.

More importantly Pansy has dished up to the Labour Party their worst nightmare. They have spent weeks trying to prevent any by elections and so the quid pro quo for their attacks on Pansy is that they now have at least one they cannot afford. They had no money for their safe seat in Mana, none for Hawkins seat and have so far managed to prevent a by election in Carter’s seat, so where are they going to get any for this by election.

Goff is now angry but he has his nasty little Vet to blame, no doubt with the help of the Labour Bully. How these Labour idiots expect to recover when they behave this way is beyond comprehension.

Frankly it shows how dense in the brain the Vet is. Did he think for one nano second that unseating Pansy would cause the seat to go to any other party? Is the seat in anyway marginal?
Now if he had attacked someone in a really marginal seat the maybe he might have achieved something. But gormless is always gormless and Hodgson is a nasty stupid little man. Comes from drinking too much sheep drench.

Fair summation V2, mostly. Generally I think MPs should serve out their contract but I can understand Pansy saying “stuff it”. I’m not particularly bothered that she’s leaving, have never been a fan of her’s, but it’s sad to see it happen like this, any level of crap to try and win (Labour), I don’t like that at all. I would only ever vote for them on their merits, and they are hard to see these days.

I don’t understand what Labour are playing at. I realise they see National losing as their only chance next year so they are trying to take them down, but their strategy here is sadly lacking. A by-election is a safe National seat is one of the most detrimental results they could have got out of this, so I presume they must have thought Wong would stay and they could keep milking this through to the election.

Goff tried to label Botany as a “National Act” seat, one of their obvious strategies is to push the supposed NACT connection buit that came across as pathetic. Act got a good vote count last election – wouldn’t it be embarrassing if they outpolled Labour in the by-election. Labour are on to a hiding to nothing in the by-election, and a costly one at that.

Viking2, from the number of overweight and even obese MPs I reckon comparing ordinary voters like me with them in laziness is illogical. On the other side there are some fitness freaks in Parliament, like Rodney Jekyll-Hide, but I don’t like gym mirrors enough to keep up with the these enthusiasts.

Viking2, How come you have your head jammed up politicians’ arses? Are you one of the PR horde in Parliament, or a party hack? Hell! You’re not one of them are you – an MP? Your posts are crass enough, but….
