That lovely Mel Gibson

December 18th, 2010 at 2:00 pm by David Farrar

A lot of people have wondered if ’s motivation for Passion of the Christ, was to demonise Jews. For those not sure, a story from Winona Ryder about Mel Gibson:

A Mel Gibson anecdote: “I remember, like, fifteen years ago, I was at one of those big Hollywood parties. And he was really drunk. I was with my friend, who’s gay. He made a really horrible gay joke. And somehow it came up that I was Jewish. He said something about ‘oven dodgers,’ but I didn’t get it. I’d never heard that before. It was just this weird, weird moment. I was like, ‘He’s anti-Semitic and he’s homophobic.’ No one believed me!”

I blame his father.

I blame the Pope. Mel’s a staunch left footer after all and the Catholics have never forgiven the Jew’s for the crucifixion.

(Despite the fact it has kept generations of Catholic artists in work over the centuarys.) :)

David Seltzer, regarding Winona Ryder – “She had the kind of presence I had never seen—an inner life. Whatever message was being said by her mouth was being contradicted by the eyes.”
That still works – look at the photo heading the article linked to.

I seem to remember from my Sunday school days that Pontius Pilate asked the assembled (Jews) who they wished him to crucify.

I wonder what makes people like that. Even if their upbringing included it, there is enough of the other side available to you as you grow up to be able to eschew those views as you grow into later life, but he obviously never has.

I wonder why, especially given he works in an industry where many are “progressively inclined.”

Interesting, but pointless. Another reason why no news coverage of anything a celebrity or sports stars says or does should ever be reported by anyone ever unless it is news about their latest movie or game. Who cares about their lifestyles or anything else about them? Mindless fucking pap. Crikey the masses are stupid aren’t they.

Perhaps as a young Catholic lad he was screwed by his parish priest and as an actor he was screwed in a different way by the predominantly Jewish movie moguls.

You could probably equate the Jewish leaders of the time who got the mob on their side, to the Green Party who got the anti smacking law passed.
It was the “establishment” who got the Romans to crucify him – the Jews weren’t allowed to. So, sure – the Jewish leaders – pharisees – got him crucified, but certainly not the whole Jewish race – all the first Christians were Jews. :-)

I’ve always found the anti-semite thing complex. I’ve never really learned to tell Jews from other people. Someone will say so and so, he’s a jew isn’t he and I find myself going I dunno, I guess his surname is Cohen and that’s Jewish isn’t it? The only friend I had at school that was definitely Jewish was one of my good friends, I knew because I’d been to his place. But he was Chinese, so that probably didn’t help me form stereotypes in my youth. I certainly wouldn’t have looked at Winona Ryder and said “hey, she’s Jewish.” Hot, yes, Jewish, how do you tell?

    Yeah Paul.

Of course Jews as the religion and jews as an ethnicity are quite different.

A guy I met a few years ago “looked” semitic – I guessed he was an arab, and asked him if he was from Egypt, because he looked a bit like an Egyptian bloke I knew. He just grinned, and told me he was from Israel and his name was very “jewish” (wont mention his name) We have done a lot of business over the years.

Poor old Mel has had a problem with the booze for many years – a few years ago he was drunk and yelling anti-jewish comments. When he was prosecuted, he just apologised and said it was because he says things he doesn’t mean when he’s drunk – go figure.

A very flawed genius – in his own field.

Was Mel Gibson a Jew hater before he went to Hollywood or did he grow into that there?

“… Only 22% of Americans now believe “the movie and television industries are pretty much run by Jews,” down from nearly 50% in 1964. The Anti-Defamation League, which released the poll results last month, sees in these numbers a victory against stereotyping. Actually, it just shows how dumb America has gotten. Jews totally run Hollywood. …

The Jews are so dominant, I had to scour the trades to come up with six Gentiles in high positions at entertainment companies. When I called them to talk about their incredible advancement, five of them refused to talk to me, apparently out of fear of insulting Jews. The sixth, AMC President Charlie Collier, turned out to be Jewish.

As a proud Jew, I want America to know about our accomplishment. … So I’ve taken it upon myself to re-convince America that Jews run Hollywood by launching a public relations campaign, because that’s what we do best. I’m weighing several slogans, including: “Hollywood: More Jewish than ever!”; “Hollywood: From the people who brought you the Bible”; and “Hollywood: If you enjoy TV and movies, then you probably like Jews after all.”

MyNameisJack – I think there’s a fairly good historical consensus that Jesus of Nazareth existed – the writings of Pliny and Josephus both had no trouble accepting that a man of that name was crucified around 30AD (or CE, whatever). Now of course you can question whether the historical Jesus was the same as the Jesus depicted in the gospels, but frankly there’s a lot more evidence that he existed than, say, Socrates for example.

Personally I’m a big fan of JC, although I’ve never seen Mel Gibson’s movie and have no real desire to. I prefer the South Park excerpts :-P

Also, a small point for the person who brought up the Pope – Mel belongs to an offshoot of Catholicism which rejects the Vatican II reforms of the 1960s and therefore does not recognise the current Pope as the legitimate heir of St Peter.

    Luc.

    or is it Puke? ;-)

Nah mate, I’m just another Don, a semi-retired builder in Tauranga.

When I lived in Oz a couple of decades ago, because I was such a dynamic dude then – touch footy, rugby – you know…..ooops maybe you don’t. ( some of the stuff real men do, especially when in Oz) – fronting up against any Aussie who attempted to denigrate Kiwi manhood – the Aussies blokes called me ‘Don – you know, that Kiwi’.

So the name happened to stick over ten years. Shit, back in 1998 when an Aussie bloke I got to know who lived in Mt. Maunganui went back one Christmas for a visit to his family in Newcastle, went down to a bottle shop to buy a case. He ran into a bloke he’d known for many years who asked, “Where are you now, Jonesy?” To which Jonesy replied, “I’m over in New Zealand, mate.”
The other bloke replied, ” New Zealand eh? Hey you don’t happen to know a bloke by the name of Don………., do you?”
To which Jonesy replied,” Donny………….? Yeah, I drink with him most Wednesdays down at the yacht club.” Thing is, I lived in Wollongong when I was in Oz – but I did meet the guy there, he was a sales rep for Toohey Breweries back then and I and drunk quite a portion of his product.

I won’t bore you with the rest of the anecdote. Suffice it to say, I am not Don Nicholson, I do not belong to Federated Farmers. However, my mother’s mother was a Nicholson, originally from Auckland where they emigrated to in 1846, from an illustrious family in Lancashire in England, the family traceable back to the 11th. Century.

I remain your humble servant. ;-)
