Wrong headline
December 9th, 2010 at 12:00 pm by David FarrarI groaned when I saw this headline in the Dom Post:
Paquin to become aunt
And the first sentence was:
Green Party co-leader Russel Norman and his partner are to make Oscar-winning actress Anna Paquin an aunt.
You know, I really don’t think Dr Norman and Katya Paquin are having a baby just so Anna can be an aunt.
Yes Anna is a famous actress (and I am a huge fan of her acting ability) and it is to be expected that there might be some mention in the story that she is Katya’s sister and hence aunt to be.
But making the headline and lead sentence all about the sister is rather inappropriate in my opinion.
Anyway congratulations to Russel and Katya on their baby to be. I’m informed your lives will never quite be the same again – in a good way!

Surely Russell has enough recognition of his own that the media don’t have make these tenious links to dum things down for the sound byte reality TV generation?
This is another example of how poorly served New Zealanders are by their media. I’d be more than a smidge abnnoyed if I was one of the parents to be as well. How many other aunts and uncles to be are there who don’t rate mention because of their chosen professions?

“Yes Anna is a famous actress ”
Really?…that is stretching things a bit DPF.
She is a C list actress who is best know for having bad teeth.
[DPF: I disagree. She gets $3m/year for her TV work alone. I think she is a great actress - especially her ability to do accents. And I like the fact she hasn't had plastic surgery etc to change her looks]

‘Population control is something that happens to other people but not the Co-leader of the Greens party’
Isn’t one of the NZ Green party’s (un-publicised) platforms the destruction and removal of HUMANS becaue they cause offence to their diety ‘Giaia’?
And don’t Green’s also support abortion?
If that is the case, then once again we have another example of the rabid hypocracy of the leadership.
Perhaps ‘Toad’ will be able to justify the leader’s ‘actions’ for us – since after all he does just about everything else in their defence?
Toad, Toad, please step forwards and help us ‘understand’.

They were probably looking for an angle — trouble was, it was the wrong angle.
The headline and story are also inaccurate: Miss Paquin Minor is already an aunt. She became an aunt when Miss Paquin Major conceived.
Since the baby’s birth is due in February, and the baby is most likely treating its mother to its kicking prowess, I doubt if the child is a to-be one.
So, in short, Dr Norman is already a father, Katya is already a mother, and Anna is already an aunt.

Can’t believe I’m supporting them but…
They are a commercial organisation that have done their homework about what it takes to get people to read their bullshit. Quite obviously their reader base is more interested in an actress than a politician.
The problem lies not with the marketer, but the market.

The impression I get of Paquin is of a silly little girl who got sucked into Hollywood and doesn’t really know what she’s doing. She’s getting married to her co-star (sounds like the usual infatuation of those you work with) and has said she is bisexual during a gay rights campaign, which sounds like a case of “me too”.
Just my impression that she hasn’t really grown up yet.

Ryan
Thanks for your reply concerning Green attitudes towards abortion:
You might care to read this little ‘charmer’ issued last year (and found after your reply) – especially the FOURTH paragraph.
We will of course expect Kamarade Norman to abide by the PARTY LINE . . .
“The Green Party today released a further policy on how New Zealand can make a goal of a 40% reduction in carbon emissions by 2020 and 80% by 2050.
“We realised our previous policy of de-stocking dairy herds was not going to be enough. Yes Cows fart and belch more methane than humans, but they don’t travel in cars and use heaters” said the Green Party.
New Zealanders emit 7.4 metric tons of carbon emissions per capita. The more New Zealanders we have, the more emissions we have. Hence the solution is to have less New Zealanders”
We have decided abortion is the best way to reduce the number of New Zealanders, as this is preferable to euthanasia. In 2007 the abortion rate was only 22.2% of pregnancies. If we can triple that to 67%, that will mean 37,000 less New Zealanders every year.
Over 10 years until 2020, that is a massive 370,000 fewer New Zealanders. That will reduce annual emissions by 2.8 million tons of carbon emissions. And by 2050 that will see annual emissions down by 14 million tons.
The Greens wish to make it clear they are not proposing that abortion be compulsory for all New Zealanders.
“We propose a lottery, like the US green card for immigrant visas. Every month all pregnant women will be entered into the lottery, and only two out of three of them will have to abort their pregnancy. One in three women will be allowed to keep their pregnancy viable. Of course they may miscarry, which will be great for the environment, but that is just an added bonus.
We wish to make it very clear, in case our opponents scare-monger, that a woman who has to have an abortion for the sake of reducing our carbon emissions is allowed to get pregnant again. So really it is just a small delay in having children for most women.
Some parties may decry this policy as extreme, but they should remember that unless carbon emissions in New Zealand are reduced to 40% of 1990 levels by 2020, the world is doomed and we will all end up aborted. So this is about saving the planet for the one in three who are allowed to be born.

Komata,
You’re quoting a satirical piece written by David Farrar.

Hopefully intentionally.

Oh come on Komata you’re shitting us. Even the melons aren’t that mental. I see Ted Turner is calling for a one child policy for every couple, fuck not only a complete and total moron but a raging hypocrite to boot, the fucktard liberal has five children, so he’s going to have to knock four of them off to have any credibility.
Perhaps the writer of the article in the Dom post has applied for a job at the Women’s Weekly, their sort of headline.

redeye is right, they are just trying to attract their target market, expect more, like:
Paris Hilton has never been to Northland where they have a drought
Lindsay Lohan has been to jail, Assange might go too
David Beckham’s coach not sin binned like Herbert
Robyn Malcolm nominated as New Zealander of the Year
Like newspapers TV news often leads with nonsense too, you often have to go to the end of an item to get half pie accuracy.

Good heavens. Is there a new channel PG?
Vote:December 9th, 2010 at 5:11 pm
I do believe that sometimes at least, if you wait until after the promos, the greetings, the headlines, the intros, and most of the item they will tell you what you read on the internet a day or two ago. But by then I’m usually on the internet reading their next day’s “news” with a lot more breadth and depth. But they’re good for pictures sometimes, if you can see past the talking body.

Yes, I WAS quoting the satirical peice that our host (DPF) wrote, but having now got your attention, I would respectfully direct you to the (non-satirical) peice ‘Contraception to Stop Climate Change’ posted by DPF on September 16 2009
It is only half a shade removed from what the satirical-article proposes (perhaps not even that much since Abortion and Contraception are only degrees of the same thing -prevention of life – after all), and again reinforces my original posit, that as usual the Greens Leadership shows its rampant hypocrisy – another case of do as I say, not as I do. Greens good, ‘the rest’ (that’s us) bad.
No doubt his dedicated followers will not even make the connection . . .
And it will only take the stroke of a pen to change the law – something to think about really.

You forgot abstinence.
How about you quote the relevant section of the non-satirical piece, now that you’ve either wittingly tried to pawn off satire as Greens policy or unwittingly believed satire was Greens policy.
