@Gulag…. On what basis do you claim that NZ built buses are rubbish? Moreover, are you saying that we do not have the skills, the technology or the workforce here to rustle up a homegrown company to build them? I suppose too that the money to buy these bloody things will end up being borrowed from some international bank. What a sorry state we have become.

@ Dave Mann is your idea that anyone looking to buy anything should get someone’s (yours? the governments?) approval before daring to buy from someone other than a New Zealand business?

What’s so great about manufacturing? They are shit jobs, generally done better by machines. Would you rather work at the end of a lathe or in an office?

We have the skills the problem is the bodywork is built cheaply [blame accountants] however there is a good firm in the North Island building buses. The chassis, engine and steering are generally imported and NZ firms do the bodywork. Lot of imports now coming from China but they are not suitable for meat eating Kiwis, too small. Probably the better alternative would be to import them from Australia where the quality and workmanship seems superior although there may be legalities such as bigger widths to be settled.

kaya re fishing – a dying, flapping distressed fish and blood running out are also a great invitation to kingfish and larger predatory fish, if you think it’s worth the risk. And you’re lucky being able to catch fish like that – I have 2 weeks off (well timed as usual) and it’s a bit hard here thanks to the flooding, although my flatmate caught a 55cm Mangrove Jack on the weekend. We are waiting for the weather to die down a bit and might head out to the GC Seaway tomorrow (on a boat not a kayak).

Methinks the debate is on its way downhill.

I am surprised so much comment has been made about American Political corruption yet no one has mentioned the Democratic Governor of Illinois Rod Blagojevich who put President Obama’s Senate Seat on the auction block for his personal gain.
As for Sarah. Good luck to her, she has been the subject of malicious vilification ever since McCain selected her as his running mate, and none of it has been justified. She has more credentials to succeed in the role than most. I also think Hilary was pretty hard done by and would have done far better than Obama.

gazzmaniac – yes re the kingfish etc, I’m on Gt Barrier Island for a spell “working” so the fishing is relatively easy. We get a lot of sharks on the east coast so I do my best to avoid them. The kingies go best on a live bait or a popper if I spot them on the surface.

Are you in Brisbane? Good luck with everything, including the fishing.

He leaves a creature writing in agony on his spear rather than humanely dispatching it? I’d say his being subject to similar agony by a larger fish would come under the heading “karma”.

kaya – Gold Coast. The rivers are dirty at the moment, however there’s a long way till we have to worry. We are lucky here because all the rivers have small catchments and the water tends to head west then south to NSW. Hopefully will be able to fish in the Seaway (the bottom bit of Moreton Bay) tomorrow afternoon or Friday – the Brisbane River is a fair bit North of there.

Has anybody else here ever been lucky enough to hook a Kingfish?

I recently experienced this for the first time, there is not another fish in the sea quite like it, when they take the bait you would swear that the fish on the end of your line is at least three or four times bigger than it actually is.

(For the record mine was 95cm, the legal limit is 75cm but as with nearly all the fish I catch it went back in and swam away.)

The Queensland government seem to be doing everything right – just recieved the following email:

12 January 2011

Tolls waived on Gateway and Logan Motorways

Queensland Motorways is waiving all tolls on the Gateway and Logan motorways from 12 midday on Wednesday 12 January 2011 until further notice.

Acting Chief Executive Officer John Gardiner said the Gateway and Logan motorways were unaffected by flood inundation.

“I encourage all motorists to use the motorways at no cost as a reliable means of travel during this flood crisis, particularly in emergency situations,” he said.

“The Gateway Motorway is open between Nudgee and the Pacific Motorway, whilst the Logan Motorway is open between the Pacific Motorway and the Gailes/Camira exit in the west.”

With the Ipswich Motorway now closed, westbound traffic on the Logan Motorway is being detoured at the Gailes/Camira exit.

Mr Gardiner said motorists should take care in the wet conditions and follow all road signage in place.

Further information will be posted on govia.com.au as it becomes available.

I suspect it’s to ensure that people can get to the airport without going through the city – many of us (myself included) usually refuse to use the Gateway Bridge because it’s too hard to pay the toll and detour through the city to get to the airport (off peak usually takes about an extra 15 min from the Gold Coast).

bb – I caught one a few years ago off Durville Island. Awesome fish, only slightly over the limit. I also had another smaller fish (a cod from memory but it’s not important) on the other hook at the same time, and everyone else on the boat was wondering why I was taking so long to reel it in!

Debate time: is proggy misguidance on international relations the product of solely ignorance, solely naivety or a bit of both depending on the objective? I think the more (relatively) clever and ruthless ones are in the third, the thicker majority are the first two.

bb – I notice that on iTunes there’s an Inception (like the film) app you can download that encourages dreaming. It “uses augmented sound to induce dreams through the headset of your iPhone or iPod Touch. It will change your perception of reality.”

Must be a current trend or something.

On that noise thing for dreams I would have to say I can see it working. From personal experience I can recall dreams in which events occurred and woke me to find an external noise matched what I was hearing as something else in the dream. For example an alarm clock was ringing and I dreamt of watching fire engines (with the oldentimes bells ringing) racing to the fire.

Wikileaks got the blame for putting a US embassy cable regarding Zimbabwe into the public domain. They were soundly condemned for endangering Morgan Tsvangirai and democracy in Zimbabwe. As it happens, Wikileaks did not choose to release the cable into the public domain and publish it. It was the Guardian newspaper.
