Why do we never hear anything of substance out of all the Waitangi Day speeches most of us are not there to hear in person? Isn’t that what reporters are meant to be for?
All I have heard about is Hone and his unpleasant rellies and some old chap predicting an earthquake in Wellington.

I suspect Peter Williams’ uncharacteristically forthright comment on One News last night that “it would be nice to see a few more white faces [and other non-Maori citizens]” on Te Tii Marae in future raised a few eyebrows. Fair comment, but until some of the heat is taken out of the people’s reception there I can’t see it happening.

So Waitangi day for NZ is the media giving the oxygen of publicity to the Haraweras. Nothing else, as their protests become more and more violent and offensive. Perhaps we should rename the day Harawera day if the media think the Haraweras are that newsworthy.

Williams has no business making comments like that.I don’t doubt he’ll be in the hangi pit for that.

Our national broadcasters are at the fore front of pushing this indigenous version of the day on us. It woud appear most of us don’t care for it anyway.

Perhps JK should think more carefully about just whose support he wants in the New Zealand electorate.

Yes Rex, I would defend their right to protest too. But that’s no reason why Key should go out of his way (literally) to give these people a ready made platform to abuse him and our country on their own turf on NZ’s own national day. This makes our very claim to nationhood a ridiculous laughing stock.

Cultural and economic unrest do affect the general population.

You realize that as soon as you live in a place without it.

Ultimately though, I do feel confident that New Zealanders, Kiwis will win the war over minority extremism, we could almost call it terrorism.

Give them a small island for fucks sake.

They can have all the hangis and kopapas and Whanganuis they want and they won’t affect anyone else.

Key’s approach to the activists seems to be to give them enough latitude to marginalise themselves. They seem to be doing an excellent job of it. Meanwhile the more moderate see Key and National as viable partners. Commonsense in action really. Seems like a very effective strategy.

Why wouldn’t the racists partner with Key if they appear to gain in abundance for their votes in Parliament? What has the Maori Party done to show its true interest in the welfare and advancement of all New Zealanders?

Looking at history,most other tribes trust the Harawiras about as much as I trust fat barstard not to eat my lunch.
The fact that the rest of native new zealand havent forgot the way they treated them in past history ,having been en slaved,stripped of posessions and more often than not eaten.They ruled by fear and the club,later the musket ,bullies then and now.
My wives family hate them with a passion,make no mistake their hatred is real and constant,makes me proud to be associated with her IWI.

Oh I agree with you entirely, Dave. If he felt he had to go, then politely ignoring them would have been the appropriate response not (as I understand he did) holding hands like a nervous schoolboy on a first date.

As for the line between protest and Bolshevism, I think that gets drawn after they take up arms and storm Government House, not when they’re waving flags, banners or, for that matter, their bare arses.

The historical record is that the English imposed their system of governance, their rules, their people. To a revisionist this may be an inconvinient truth but the reality is the Westminster system is in essence rascist and discriminatory.
Another statistic not observed by correspondents on this page is that in New Zealand the population is overwhlemingly of English origin who enjoyed unprecendented privileges when settling in New Zealand, ie state houses, cosy govt jobs, easy access to finance. In a modern contemporary setting this would not be tolerated.
